When 19-year-old Emily Bhatnagar from Maryland, USA, found out her father had stage four thyroid (甲状腺) cancer, her response was a little different than you might expect. To honour her father, who she also describes as her best friend, she decided to start a book drive called For Love and Buttercup, collecting books for kids with cancer.
“It was very much an overnight idea,” she explains. “I posted a message on an app called Nextdoor asking my neighbours for used book donations. I was only expecting a few here and there, but the response was truly incredible, and it was just the push I needed to co-exist with my grief rather than letting it consume me.
“It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch my dad go through cancer and see him lose a little bit of himself each day, but the book drive allowed me to develop a newfound sense of purpose combined with an even greater sense of compassion (同情) to help others in any shape or form. I wanted to help kids. They’ve always held a soft spot in my heart.”
Using tips she earns from working at her parents’ bread shop, Emily has bought many books out of her own pocket. In addition, she receives donations through her Amazon wish list, which can be found in the bio of the book drive’s Instagram account.
Emily and her older brother spent a whole summer driving around town, loading boxes of books into their car. “It was such an honour knowing people have carried these books all their lives through generations, and they wanted to gift it to my cause.”
The project has seen huge success, with For Love and Buttercup donating over 15,000 books and being recognized by The Washington Post, Forbes, The President’s Volunteer Service Award and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.

Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for you Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items and drinks have acted as substitutes for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right
Wrong. Sugar-free isn’t better for you. In fact, sugar-free is worse.
Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The problem:these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm than good.
Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong and that’s because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives still contain sugar and the ones that don’t contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not know how to process.
Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).
Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!
8. What can be learned about sugar-free products
A. They don’t taste sweet. B. They are more nutritious.
C. They contain artificial sweeteners. D. They contain natural sweeteners.
9. Why are sugar-free alternatives described as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”
A. They won’t lead to weight gain. B. They are greener and healthier.
C. They are much to everyone’s taste. D. Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are used.
10. What do we know about artificial sweeteners
A. They present a bigger health risk. B. They can be easily broken down.
C. They are as sweet as sugar. D. They improve our ability to metabolize.
11. What is the author’s final conclusion
A. Real sugar is a better choice. B. Stay away from sugary products.
C. Sugar-free products are healthier. D. Choose sugar from natural sources.

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an important role in the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and Asian Para Games. AI usually refers to the advanced technologies, such as the naked-eye 3D, VR, AR and so on. These terms might sound familiar, but how smart are they when applied to the 56 Asian Games venues (场地)
Their smartness can be found in running the venues with less human labor forces and with more connections between man and machines. At the Huanglong Sports Center, a system called Smart Stadium Brain is built. The Brain, a 25-square-meter high-definition (高清晰度) screen in the venue’s information center, displays the entire venue in 3D visualization to keep an eye on the temperature, the lighting, the energy consumption, and the equipment to guarantee a friendly environment for the athletes and audiences. For the benefit of audiences, a small screen on each seat is designed to be at the audience’s service. By finger touching, the audience can control it from three parts — angle, speed, and size to watch and keep in contact with the event. What’s more, supported by the 5G technology, a 360° playback function is fixed.
AI also means further protection on environment. At the Fuyang sports Center, although it has been raining for days, the roof of the venue still remains dry. And the secret lies in its attractive sky garden. The garden, covering the roof, is not only eye-catching but also useful. It allows the greening rate of the entire stadium to reach as high as 45%, being energy-saving. Under the cobblestones (鹅卵石) of the sky garden, a recovery system is filtering (过滤) and collecting rainwater for the venue’s water system, fountain, and irrigation water.
12. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “guarantee” in Para2
A. Adapt to. B. Make sure of. C. Get used to. D. Take advantage of.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. The 360° playback function is always available.
B. The audience can’t see the whole venue on the large screen.
C. The audience can control small screens on their seats easily.
D. The stadium is environmentally friendly and advanced but expensive.
14 How does the roof of the venue keep dry while it’s raining
A. By saving a lot of energy. B. By collecting rainwater system of sky garden.
C. By recycling rainwater. D. By greatly improving the greening rate.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. More Connections with Smart Devices.
B. Asian Games with Artificial Intelligence.
C. A Sports Center with Smart Stadium Brain.
D. Smart Asian Games with High-tech Venues.

But I won’t be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Eric didn’t hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked at Eric with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine ” Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance. “You’ll be alright, Riley.” he cried. “Don’t worry, Daddy is here. We’ll get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for his daughter’s operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her operation, but they would be left with nothing, “It’s okay,” he told himself. I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”

C
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。如今市场上充斥着各种“无糖食品”和“无糖饮料”,它们对我们的健康究竟有着怎样的影响呢?
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar.(无糖是指使用人工甜味剂代替真正的糖)”可知,所谓的“无糖产品”,其实是用人工甜味剂来代替真正的糖。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as‘low-calorie’or‘no-calorie’.(大多数人造甜味剂比糖甜得多,所以只需要少量。这就是为什么他们可以以‘低卡路里’或‘无卡路里’来推销无糖替代品)”可知,由于人工甜味剂甜度非常高,所以其用量非常小,因此商家将其“无糖产品”标榜为“低卡路里”或“零卡路里”。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中“In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).(反过来,无糖替代品会导致体重增加和2型糖尿病)”以及倒数第二段中“Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts everything you eat.(人工甜味剂还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,从而影响你吃的所有东西)”可知,这些所谓的“无糖产品”中含有的人工甜味剂会导致肥胖和糖尿病,还会损害肠道分解糖的能力,因此是更大的健康隐患。故选A。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar.(一个很好的经验法则:远离人造甜味剂,寻找无糖的天然甜味剂,如甜菊糖或枣糖)”可知,作者认为,无论糖还是人工甜味剂都不是好的选择,后者危害更大;喜欢甜食者最好的选择是摄取自然的糖分——比如来自水果的糖。故选D。

14. How does the roof of the venue keep dry while it’s raining
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

He approached him, and found out that the boy, Jack, wanted to buy medicine for his sick mother, but had no money. Jack cried out, “If I don’t bring home medicine, my mom will die.
By the time Eric made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ll soon have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

He opened it with curiosity and was surprised to find a check inside and a note that read: “You’d saved a boy’s mother years before. Thank you so much for the three packs of medicine, and two portions of food.” Immediately, the memory that he once extended a helping hand to the desperate boy in a long time ago occurred to him. He was touched and hurriedly rushed to the nurse station to confirm his assumption.
In the nurse’s station, he was told doctor Jack had entered the hospital room just now. Without hesitation, he ran to the doctor’s office and gathered Jack in his arms. “Thank you, son,” Eric cried. “It’s I who should say thanks. That day, you saved my mother’s life.” The doctor uttered in a thrilled tone. “Since then, I promised myself that I would study hard to become a doctor to help more people. Now I have achieved the dream.” “I am proud of you,” Eric said with happiness. The doctor smiled and promised to arrange the operation for Riley soon and take care of her during her hospitalization.
