1.Liu Ming did not know what to expect when he volunteered for the Special Olympic World Summer Games in Shanghai, back in October 2007. 当刘明准备为2007年10月在上海举行的夏季特奥会做志愿者时，他不知道能期待什么。
expect是动词，意为“期待，指望，预料”。常用结构：
（1）expect sth意为“期待/预料某事物”。例如：
The couple are expecting a call from their son. 那对夫妇正期待他们儿子的电话。
（2）expect （sb） to do sth意为“期待/预料/指望（某人）做某事”。例如：
We can’t expect to learn a foreign language in a few months. 我们不能指望在几个月内学会一门外语。
I was expecting her to come to my party yesterday. 我一直期待她昨天会来参加我的聚会。
2. ...give children and adults with intellectual disabilities a chance to show their skills to the world. ……给有智力缺陷的孩子和成人一个向全世界展示能力的机会。
（1）chance是可数名词，意为“机会”，近义词是opportunity。give sb a chance to do sth 意为“给某人一个做某事的机会”；have a/no chance to do sth意为“有/没有机会做某事”。例如：

（2）with intellectual disabilities属于介词短语作后置定语，修饰children and adults。在英语中，介词短语作定语一般要后置。例如：

closely此处用作副词，意为“密切地”，表示抽象性的“接近”。其形容词形式为close，意为“亲密的；临近的”，可以表示位置的“接近”，还可以表示关系的“近”。例如：

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person,” said Mason, a volunteer.
National Volunteer Week of the US started in 1974 and is held（被举办） every April. It’s a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It’s also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to
