Be smart online learners
Good morning, everyone, it’s a great honor for me to stand here and address/ deliver my speech titled “Be smart online learners”. Online learning is increasingly important recently. However, it has both advantages and disadvantages.
Obviously, online learning allows us to learn at any time wherever we are. Besides, we can absorb all kinds of resources to learn efficiently. But it does have shortcomings. Staring at the screen long is harmful to our eyes. Worse still, we don’t have many opportunities to interact with our teachers and classmates. The worst part is that sometimes we lack self-discipline. (自律)
Then how to be smart online learners First, be brave to discuss our problems with others. Second, take a short break wisely when necessary. Finally, making a schedule is a must.
In conclusion, only by being smart online learners can we truly enjoy the benefits of modem technology.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
I am LiHua, from Yucai Middle School. It is a great honor for me, on behalf of our school, to deliver a speech about the changes of our city to you.
Our city used to be very dirty and the people led a poor life. However, great changes have taken place since 1978 when the reform and opening-up policy was carried out. Now it is taking on a new look. Piles of tall buildings stand beside the clean streets and the people here enjoy a comfortable and peaceful life. In the past, many people did not have enough money to feed their family, let alone went to school. But now, not only can we study in the clear and clean classrooms, but receive free compulsory education. (免费义务教育)
Thanks to the Chinese Communist Party, without whom, our life won't become better and better.
May our country and hometown be more prosperous and stronger.
Music has helped me
Hello, guys. I'm greatly honored to share with you my experience of how music has helped me get through tough days.
Have you ever faced a time when things looked dark and you had no hope at all Last term, I failed the final math examination. I was at a loss and couldn't concentrate my attention on my study. I even cried desperately when I was alone, feeling so depressed. Fortunately, my friends recommended that I should listen to some positive music, which finally helped me recover.
As an old saying goes, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” It is absolutely true! Music helps me not only to face the failure, but also to overcome depression and discouragement. Music, like a friend, helps me to gain the joy of rebirth and encourages me to relax my body and soul, which is like sunshine always warming my heart. Undoubtedly, it helps me back on the right track.
Hopefully, music can be your companion too. Thank you for your attention

Dear Chris,
How is everything going With heartfelt delight, I’m writing to share my sincere feeling about the China-Ireland Cultural Festival with you.
Although a week has passed since you returned home, I can still recall the enjoyable time we spent together. From Chinese calligraphy to Irish paintings, we got a glimpse of (窥见) various works of art. And the festival also unfolded/ showed the two countries’ profound history. From this experience, I truly understand that geographical separation does not necessarily bring about cultural conflicts and that we can absorb the other’s merits(merit 价值;优点)contrarily. (contrary-contrarily 反之;相反地)
At last, I hope our friendship will last forever. Looking forward to your early reply.
Dear Chris,
I’m so glad to hear from you. In your last letter, I’ve learned that you’re very interested in the coming-of-age ceremony held in our school. The following is a brief introduction to the ceremony.
The ceremony was scheduled to be held on June 8, during which we reviewed the past events. We are all deeply moved by the ceremony, from which we realize that the sense of responsibility always accompanies the process of our growth. We are determined to follow the examples of our excellent schoolmates and make ourselves useful to the whole society. Such is my understanding about growing up. What about yours
Looking forward to your reply.

Dear Jackson,
It’s amazing to know that you show great preference for Chinese Kungfu and have a strong desire to learn it soon.
I can’t wait to recommend something about Kungfu to you. Kungfu, dating back to ancient China as early as 2,500 years ago, is the cultural treasure of the Chinese nation. It is one of the traditional sports in our country, which can not only make the body healthy and strong, but also increase the willpower. As far as I know, among the many forms, Taiji Quan may enjoy the highest popularity while Shaolin Quan is the most well-known form in a long history. As a Chinese cultural heritage, Kungfu has gained recognition all over the world. I am sure you will benefit a lot from it. Looking forward to your coming.

Dear Sir / Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an outgoing Chinese boy, who is studying in London now. Having heard that a Chinese painting exhibition will be held in the city, I am writing to apply to be a volunteer of your team.
I have some advantages for the job. First of all, having lived in China for sixteen years and having learnt English since I was a child, I have a good command of (精通) English and Chinese, which is beneficial for introducing Chinese paintings. Besides, having a good knowledge of(精通;掌握master)Chinese paintings and being familiar with Chinese painting culture, I can get foreigners and the locals to know more about it. Last but not least, through my introduction and efforts, I believe I can strengthen the friendship between China and England.
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Dear Sir / Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a senior high school student. Hearing that you are recruiting (recruit征募;招新) some volunteers to welcome the coming foreign students, I’m gladly writing to apply for this job.
I’m quite sure that I can be equal to the job. Firstly, I have a good command of oral English, which enables me to communicate with foreign students with great ease (轻而易举的). Besides, my similar experience as a volunteer may help me settle the potential problems in the process. I’m fully convinced that through this voluntary work I can learn more about their lifestyle and convey the beautiful Chinese culture to them. (I’m fully convinced that我充分相信)
If chosen, I will devote my energy and time to the job. Looking forward to your early reply.
Dear Sir / Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a member of the summer camp. I’m glad to learn that the camp will start a variety of optional courses, of which I’m interested in giving first aid. I’m writing to sign up for it .
I choose to attend the course due to the fact that first aid is of great importance to people. If a person gets injured and needs medical care before a doctor can be called in, every second counts/matters in saving life, in which case the knowledge of first aid can make a big difference. Besides, personally, I plan to study medicine and devote my life to medical research. Hopefully, the course will help me to learn about how to deal with medical emergencies.( medical emergency急诊;医疗应急)
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Dear Terry,
Hi! My name is Li Hua, a Chinese Senior Three student. I learned from your post that you wanted to find a Chinese tutor and you can teach English in return. I am quite interested in it.
I think I’m fit for it. Firstly, Chinese is my mother tongue, and speaking it is a must for me to communicate with others in my daily life. Secondly, I tutored foreigners to learn Chinese last year. So I’m quite confident that I can help you to master the language.
In your post, you said that you are willing to teach English in return. It is just what I eagerly want. We can contact each other by video chat every night for half an hour in English and half an hour in Chinese. In this way, we can improve ourselves together.
I’m looking forward to your reply.

Firstly, writing a 5-minute self-introduction is a must-do preparation, in which your strengths and competence (ability; talent) setting you apart from others should be highlighted. Secondly, wearing a broad and sincere smile will definitely help you leave a favorable impression on the interviewers. Last but not least, make sure you have some of your own questions to ask as well as preparing for the interviewers’ questions.
Chances favor a prepared mind. Only if you make every effort will you bring out the best in you and outshine the rest of the applicants. Look forward to good news about you.

Dear David,
Welcome to China. I’m delighted to hear you’re coming to learn Chinese kung fu during the summer holiday. I’d like to offer you some advice.
Chinese kung fu has been popular all over the world. No one can master it without constantly practicing. It is necessary for you to be well prepared in advance. Firstly, I suggest you watch some videos on the Internet to make good preparations. Also, you should buy special shoes and clothes made in Chinese style. They are comfortable to wear when you are learning kung fu. Moreover, it’s a good idea to learn how to use chopsticks, which can help you to enjoy tasty Chinese food.
Hopefully, your kung fu study will go well/smoothly.
Hi, Sara,
As a student of your age, I understand your situation. The problem you’re facing is common among us teenagers. It is believed that we get pretty good at finding excuses to give up trying when there are obstacles(障碍) in the way. The reason is that we’re creatures of routine and habit. Here are some tips on how to get moving.
First and foremost, once you’ve set a goal and decided how you’re going about it, you might as well divide it into smaller ones, so it’s easier to handle and less overwhelming. Besides, it is advisable to keep track of your progress and post motivating pictures or slogans within your sight, which in turn inspire you to keep pushing ahead. More importantly, keep it up until it is a habit to you.
I really hope that you can find my suggestions useful.

Dear Alex,
Hearing that you will return to your country soon, I feel a bit upset. But meanwhile, I want to send my sincere gratitude for your kind help with my English learning.
I still remember what you have devoted to improving my oral/spoken English and English writing. Besides, you also frankly shared your learning experience with me. Additionally, without your help, I would not have been a top student in English and would not have won the recent English Speech Contest. All in all, words fail to express my thankfulness to you.
I do hope that you will have a bright future and that our friendship will last forever!
Dear Luke,

I’m writing to express my sincere apology to you for not going to the bookstore with you at the appointed time. I’m sorry for the inconvenience it may cause you.

If it’s convenient for you, shall we meet at 8:00 am next Saturday If not, please keep me informed in advance of what time suits you best.

Dear Mark,
I hate to say sorry, but there is a change in my school arrangements. So I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep my appointment to discuss Chinese paintings with you. I sincerely apologize to you for any inconvenience caused by the unexpected change. I suggest we put it off until 3 pm next Thursday. Will that be fine with you Good news is that an exhibition of Chinese paintings is to be held this weekend. Works by some nationwide famous painters will be exhibited. Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
June 8th was officially named by the UN in 2009 as World Oceans Day. It aims to raise people’s awareness of protecting oceans.
It goes without saying that oceans play a critical role in the world. For one thing, they provide abundant resources and food for us; for the other, they are crucial/important/significant for the global climate development. Additionally, oceans are “the lungs of our planet”, providing most of the oxygen we breathe.
As high school students, it’s our responsibility to protect them. First of all, do what we can to make a difference. For example, stop throwing garbage into oceans. In addition, call on people around us to take action, too. I believe we will have cleaner oceans.
It goes without saying that… 不言而喻
Learning English Beyond the Classroom
There are many things we can do to learn English well. In order to find out the approaches/methods to learning English beyond the classroom, we conducted a survey among students.
First, 18% of the students enjoy reading English books. Next, listening to English songs is the most popular way, accounting for 65%. After that, half of the students prefer watching English movies to practice English. What’s more, 12% of the students choose to visit English-learning websites when enhancing their English skills.
In my opinion, reading books and visiting websites can enhance students’ writing skills while listening to songs and watching movies are beneficial to improving their spoken English. My suggestion is that students should try multiple ways when learning English so that they can find the way which fits them most.

Dear fellow students,
Plogging(跑步捡垃圾) is a new fitness trend which combines jogging with picking up litter. Since it was created, it has swept across the world.
It has been acknowledged that plogging has lots of advantages. Firstly, more calories will be consumed in order to pick up rubbish while jogging, thus improving exercise efficiency. Secondly, no matter what age you are, you can easily adopt this sports style. It doesn’t require special training or extra costs -- a pair of gloves and a garbage bag are already enough for you to make a difference. Most importantly, our environment can benefit from such a sport, which can make our world a better and more beautiful place to live in.
In short, plogging not only benefits our health but also does good to our environment. Let’s spare no effort to take action!
Dear students,
With the development of technology, more and more students tend to use electric products for taking notes, rather than writing on the paper. As a consequence/result, our handwriting is not as good as it used to be. To solve this problem, we should do as follows:
First, we should use less electric products while learning so that we can have more chances to improve our handwriting. Also it is necessary that we form the habit of practicing calligraphy and keeping a diary every day. What’s more, it is also a good way to write letters to our relatives and friends by hand.
Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial to us students. So let’s take action right now! I’m sure our efforts will eventually pay off!

A Cross - Country Running Race
Last Sunday witnessed an extraordinary cross-country running race, which drew the attention of every student and teacher of our school. Many students selected from every class took part in the competition.
The route measures five kilometers, from our school gate to the foot of Nanshan Mountain. Runners tried their best to finish the competition, with their classmates along the way giving them necessary help as well as encouragement. At last, all the runners managed to arrive at the finish line, receiving cheers from all the directions.
The activity was highly spoken/thought of, because not only did it provide a chance for us to exercise, but also made us more united.

Last Thursday, all the students and teachers of our school gathered in the school hall at 3 pm to enjoy a special activity - an English speech contest with the theme of “Telling Chinese Stories in English”.
The activity had three parts. First, every contestant delivered his or her own speech and then each of them was asked to make a impromptu (即兴) speech on the basis of the given questions by the judges. The last part was giving marks according to the performances of contestants and presenting awards to winners.
This contest gave us a good opportunity to practice speaking English in public. More importantly, we get to know it is our responsibility to spread the splendid Chinese culture to the world.

Our school held the annual “Science & Technology Day” yesterday and I found it a hugely rewarding experience. Activities included technological knowledge quizzes, students’ research exhibitions and advanced technologies lectures. My classmates and I really enjoyed it all and deeply appreciated the efforts of the organizers.
I took part in the “create your own robot” competition, which was a great learning opportunity. The hand-on experience really helped me to better understand the theory behind robotics. (机器人技术).
Thanks to the festival, I have a much clearer understanding of technology and its applications than before. It has motivated me to focus on science as a career, and hopefully make a meaningful contribution to our society. I can’t wait for the next festival.

Nowadays, social practice has been brought to great concern among students increasingly. Our school is planning on some social practice activities next term. We are encouraged to participate in them.
Among these activities, I’d like to be a volunteering teacher in special education school. There is no doubt that I can benefit a lot from it. First, it can provide me with more chances to be with children and learn more about them. Second, it is a good chance for me to apply my theoretical knowledge to practice and improve my ability. Third, I can enjoy the happiness of work and realize my value.
I’m looking forward to joining this activity.
I’m more than delighted to inform you of a meaningful activity in a nursing home held on March 5th, which is called “to carry forward the Spirit of Lei Feng”.
A variety of significant activities were arranged as follows: when we got there, we visited the elderly in their rooms in groups, presenting them with flowers and self-made cards to show our sincere love and respect, after which we did some cleaning and washing for them. Besides, we chatted with them about their old days, and anything they are interested in. Some vivid performances such as singing and dancing were also given to them, making them full of delight.
It was through this activity that we fully realized that the awareness of respecting the elderly should be raised. I hope we can have more activities of this kind!

太空探索是否值得
Recently, students in our class have had a discussion on whether space is worth exploring.
30% of the students think space exploration is not worthwhile. They think space is too far away from us and our daily life. And the money spent on space exploration can be used to solve the earth’s problems such as starvation and pollution.
On the other hand, 70% think space is worth exploring because we have benefited a lot from it, such as using satellites for communication and weather forecast. What’s more, with further space research, we may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day. Also, space research will enable us to find new sources to solve the problem of energy shortages on the earth.
From where I stand, I firmly think it necessary to explore space for the benefits of all humans.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad that you are caring about the development of my hometown. Now let me tell you something about it.
Great changes have taken place since the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The targeted poverty reduction has reached its ideal aims. Many poor families have got effective help from local government and have improved their life greatly. Many old houses are replaced by new tall buildings which are surrounded with green trees and colorful flowers. The rivers that were polluted seriously before are getting clearer and clearer. Besides, all kinds of fishes return to the rivers. Under the blue sky and white clouds, people live a harmonious and peaceful life. Please come to visit my hometown in the near future.
