Spring ViewOn war-torn land streams flow and mountains stand; In spring town grass and weeds are overgrown. Sad over the years, flowers make us shed tears; Hating to part, hearing birds breaks our heart. The beacon fire has gone higher and higher; Words from home are worth their weight in gold. I cannot bear to scratch my grey hair; It grows too thin to hold a light hairpin.
Poet Du Fu (712—770) wrote this poem in springtime, when he caught by An Lushan’s rebel army (叛军) and locked up in Chang’an, the capital city at that time. The poem shows his love for his motherland and how he missed his family. The poet used imagery of flowers and birds to express his feelings, which is seen as classic. The spring flowers and birds were joyful,① ____▲____, in the eyes of the sad poet, they reminded him of the past and made him cry. Flowers came to life again in spring, however, the broken country could not be easily restored (恢复). This shows his care for his country and his people.
②The birds were singing freely, while the poet lost his freedom. He was alone without any relatives or friends. Thus the birds’ singing frightened him. This shows that he missed his family. His depressed (绝望的) feeling got even deeper in the next lines. As the war was going on, it was hard to receive letters from family members. The letters were as valuable as gold.

(2024·甘肃金昌·一模)How Fast Can Animals Shake
When we get wet, we need a towel (毛巾) to get ourselves dry. When a dog gets wet, all it needs is to shake its body. A study shows that a wet dog can shake off half the water on its body in less than a second. In fact, this common act of a dog works better than a washing machine.
The study found that animal shaking begins with the head and ends with the tail. During a shake, the animal’s head and skin all move. Smaller animals must shake faster than bigger animals to get water off. For example, in one second, a rat can shake 18 times, a dog 6 times, and a bear 4 times. Bigger animals can get their body with fewer shakes.
For animals, shaking is not just about getting themselves dry. It is also about saving their lives. Being wet makes animals heavier, and that makes them harder to run. In the animal world, how fast an animal can run often decides whether it will live or not. Maybe that is why the “wet-dog shake” has become a common habit of many animals.

Kids Care About: Sea Turtles

Sea turtles live all over the world. They live near coasts and in open waters. Six species live in United States waters. All of them are at risk.
Ashleigh Bandimere works for the Oceanic Society. She says fishing is the biggest threat(威胁) to sea turtles. The turtles get caught in nets. Climate change is a danger, too. Sea levels are rising. There are more storms. These destroy turtles’ nesting places.

Lights from buildings and roads confuse the hatchlings(刚孵化的海龟). ①They follow the light _____ _____ going to the ocean. “Very few sea turtle hatchlings will make it to adulthood,” Bandimere says. “So each adult turtle is extremely special.”
Many people are trying to help sea turtles. Leigh Henry works at the World Wildlife Fund. The group helps fisheries “switch to more turtle-friendly fishing hooks and nets,” she says. For example, lights can be put inside of nets. The animals can swim around them.
Can we save the sea turtles Bandimere says yes. “We know what threats they face,” she says. “And we know what’s needed to eliminate these threats. It’s just a matter of making it happen.”
You Can Help, Too! Here are five ways you can help sea turtles. Avoid single-use plastic. Pick up trash on the beach. Flatten old sand castles. Fill in holes in the sand. The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of (短缺) water. Why Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only use the 3% of the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted.

Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next
