A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year.
Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said, “It’s not as difficult as you might think if you start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one for the sink and the other half for the shower. It’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”
“So it’s actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually, and you’ll start noticing the difference,” Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them.
In 2017, the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market and has since developed into a website. Louise regularly writes a newsletter for her hundreds of subscribers. They also started selling eco-friendly products, ranging from non-chemical household cleaning and washing solutions for a “less toxic home” to bamboo washing-up brushes. Louise mentioned, “I started No Waste Living because I wanted to show our achievement s and lead by example.”
Although the family occasionally faces criticism, Louise remains determined. She said, “The main point of contention(争论) for people regarding new waste rules is having to drive their waste to a recycling center, which adds to their already busy lives. However, in the long run, you will create more space in your home, save money, and spend less time dealing with garbage cans.”
4. How did the couple start their waste reduction journey
A. By replacing small soaps with large ones. B. By using a small amount of bath cream.
C. By using unpackaged soap bars. D. By recycling soft plastics and batteries.
5. Why did the couple found No Waste Living
A. To bring eco-products to market. B. To inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
C. To treat recyclable waste from the neighborhood. D. To answer the call of their subscribers.
6. Why do some people dislike new waste rules
A. They mean more work to deal with garbage.
B. They increase the cost of garbage collection.
C. They establish a set time for waste management.
D. They limit the daily amount of garbage for collection.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. A business - minded couple. B. The “less poisonous home” concept.
C. The global trend in recycling. D. A planet- friendly lifestyle.

China’s TikTok, which has taken the world by storm, is working its magic in its home nation, too.
The Chinese version of TikTok, called Douyin, has amassed (累积) 400 million daily active users, parent company Byte Dance (字节跳动) revealed in its annual report this week. This is an impressive growth for the addictive video app, which had 250 million daily active users in January last year.
The report, which describes users’ behavior and trends, shows the cultural difference between China and the US, said Katherine Wu, an investor at New York-based firm Notation Capital.
Things that trend in these two countries are completely different. For example, knowledge-based content is extremely popular in China, but less so in the U.S. Also, those creators that did the most dance videos in China are users born in the 60s, while in the US, it seems that it’s mostly teenagers who are creating the dances.
Byte Dance claimed that Douyin has established itself as the largest knowledge, culture and art platform in China. 14.89 million “knowledge-based content videos” were shared on the app last year, it claimed. For example, one of the world’s most valued startups claimed that the number of users who posts videos about chemistry reached 130 million people last year. “On the art and culture front, videos related to those topics had 543.1 billion plays on Douyin last year.” it claimed.
Education has become a main use case for Byte Dance. TikTok, which is estimated to have earned more than $50 million last year, already counts educational content as one of the most consumed categories on its app across the world. The app launched an educational campaign in India last year, where it has amassed more than 200 million users.
8. The difference in trends between China and the US reflects the difference in ________.
A. culture B. education
C. knowledge D. hobby
9. What videos are mostly shared on TikTok in China
A. Music videos B. Knowledge-based videos
C. Humorous videos D. Videos about chemistry
10. The passage is written by ________.
A. analyzing reasons B. showing survey results
C. stating arguments D. providing statistics and examples
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To introduce the app --TikTok.
B. To help customers use TikTok.
C. To reveal the popularity of TikTok.
D. To recommend TikTok to customers.

As many as 300 million full-time jobs throughout the world could be automated in some way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
In a report Sunday, they predicted that 18% of work globally could be computerized, with the effects caused more deeply in advanced economies than emerging markets. That’s partly because white-collar workers are seen to be more at risk than manual laborers. Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the economists said, compared to the “little effect” seen on physically demanding or outdoor occupations, such as construction and repair work.
In the United States and Europe, about two-thirds of current jobs “are exposed to some degree of AI automation”, and up to a quarter of all work could be done by AI completely, the bank estimates.
Further use of such Al will likely contribute to job losses, the Goldman Sachs economists wrote. But they noted that technological innovation that initially displaces workers has historically also created employment growth in the long run.
While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase labor productivity — and boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
“Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than replaced by AI,” the economists added. “Most workers are employed in occupations that are partially exposed to AI automation and, following AI adoption, will likely apply at least some of their freed-up capacity toward productive activities that increase output.”
Of US workers expected to be affected, for instance, 25% to 50% of their workload “can be replaced,” the researchers added. “The combination of significant labor cost savings, new job creation, and a productivity boost for non-displaced workers raises the possibility of a labor productivity boom like those that followed the emergence of earlier general-purpose technologies like the electric motor and personal computer.”
12. Who are less likely to be affected by AI automation according to Paragraph 2
A. Repairmen. B. White-collar workers.
C. Administrative workers. D. Lawyers.
13. What can we learn about AI according to Goldman Sachs economists
A. AI may cause little impact on the labor market. B. AI has replaced most jobs and industries.
C AI may increase labor productivity. D. AI has caused huge job losses.
14. What does the underlined word “complement” in paragraph 6 mean
A. To add to something to improve. B. To destroy.
C. To introduce new things. D. To displace.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Concept of AI B. The Achievements of AI
C. The Impacts of AI D. The Development of AI

Looking over the top of the book, I glanced across at the new girl named Rochelle. She only joined our class at the beginning of the week. It must be hard starting a new school in the middle of the year.
At last, the bell went for the end of the day. I spotted Rochelle running towards a tall woman who must be her mum. Then I saw a surprising thing. Rochelle’s mum was waving her arms round and making shapes with her fingers, and Rochelle was doing the same with hers. It was like they were talking to each other with their hands. Oh, could her mother be deaf My mind was filled with questions.
The next day, I was reading this week’s words when I felt a tap (轻拍) on my shoulder. I looked up and Rochelle was standing in front of me. “Shall we test each other ” she asked, pointing to my spelling book.
“Yes, of course,” I replied. But I was still wondering how to ask the questions that had been tumbling (翻腾) around in my head since yesterday.
“So, um, that hand thing you did with your mum…”
“Signing.”
“Yeah, signing. Is it because she’s, um, deaf ”
“Yes, both my parents are deaf, so I communicate with them through sign.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. That must be really difficult.” I could tell by the frown on Rochelle’s face that I’d said something wrong, but I didn’t know what. “So, did your parents need someone to help them look after you when you were a baby ”
“Of course not,” Rochelle got annoyed. “Why would being deaf mean they can’t look after me Being deaf doesn’t mean they’re stupid,” she was almost shouting. “In fact, they’re much cleverer than most people I know.” Hearing that, I got bet all over. I didn’t say her parents were stupid. But before I could explain, the bell went and she strode (阔步行走) out of the classroom.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. D

C. AI may increase labor productivity. D. AI has caused huge job losses.
14. What does the underlined word “complement” in paragraph 6 mean
A. To add to something to improve. B. To destroy.
C. To introduce new things. D. To displace.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Concept of AI B. The Achievements of AI
C. The Impacts of AI D. The Development of AI
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. C
根据第二段中的“Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the economists said, compared to the “little effect” seen on physically demanding or outdoor occupations, such as construction and repair work.(这些经济学家们表示,与建筑和维修等对体力要求高或户外的工作表现出的“几乎没有影响”相比,行政工作者和律师预计将受到最大影响)”可知,行政工作者和律师这些白领员工受到的影响比建筑工作者和维修工作者高,所以结合选项,维修工受到的影响较小。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase labor productivity — and boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs economists.(高盛经济学家表示,虽然工作场所可能会发生变化,但广泛采用Al最终可能会提高劳动生产率,并在10年内每年将全球GDP提高7%)”可知,AI可能会提高劳动生产率。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than replaced by AI”可知,although表示让步,即尽管人工智能对劳动力市场的影响可能很大,但大多数工作和行业只是部分受到自动化的影响,因此更有可能被人工智能补充而不是取代,故划线词意思是“增加到某事物中使其改善”。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章首段“As many as 300 million full-time jobs around the world could be automated in some way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists.(高盛经济学家表示,全球多达3亿个全职工作岗位可以通过最新一波的人工智能以某种方式实现自动化,这一波人工智能已经造就了像ChatGPT这样的平台。)”

I hurried after her, but when I tried to speak to her, she kept her back to me as if I were her enemy.

【答案】范文
After school, I saw Rochelle and her mother moving their hands quickly. Up and down, their hands moved in the air with fluent changes and occasionally, her mother would gesture towards her mouth and ears. A little far though I stood from them, I could keenly sense Rochelle's agitation while her mother was wearing a tender smile. Guilty and curious, I halted my steps to spot carefully while wondering, “Are they talking about my impolite question ” Before I could find an answer, Rochelle glanced around as if seeking something. In that moment, our gazes locked.
All of a sudden, Rochelle was coming over to me, with her e yes watery and red. As she stood before me, her voice was sincere, “Mom signed to me that you meant no harm but only curiosity and concerns. I need to say sorry to you.” “Never mind, Rochelle. It's I who should apologize for my impolite assumption. And, thank you and your mother, for your kindness.” I replied while feeling a warm gaze fall on me-it was from Rochelle's mother, the tall woman, who, with her wisdom, helped unravel our misunderstanding. It was a life lesson that I should never judge others solely by their actions and appearance because prejudice is a poison that hurts the very foundations of equality and mutual respect, values that should always prevail among humanity.
