Scientists in Australia have discovered that they can use the world’s smelliest fruits to make devices that could power electric cars. A durian is a fruit that looks like a pineapple. It is a delicacy in some Asian countries, but its smell is so unpleasant that some of those countries have banned it from public places. Its smell has been compared to rotting eggs and even smelly old gym socks.
Vincent Gomes and his colleagues at the University of Sydney, in Australia, used a durian and a jackfruit — another fruit known for its terrible smell — to make energy storing devices called supercapacitors.
Supercapacitors are an alternative to batteries. They can’t store as much energy as a normal battery does, but they are much quicker to recharge. Durians and jackfruits contain some of the chemicals used in supercapacitors, which gave Gomes the idea. To make the fruit-based devices, the team heated and then freeze-dried the uneatable cores of the durian and jackfruit to make a special kind of material called an aerogel.
Aerogels are one of the world’s lightest solid materials. Often called “frozen smoke”, they are made by removing the liquid from a gel and replacing it with air. They have many scientific uses, but one of their special properties is the ability to conduct electric currents, which makes them an important part of supercapacitors. The aerogels made from durian and jackfruit both worked well when placed inside a supereapacitor, although the durian aerogel was found to be the better of the two.
The discovery is important because the materials currently used to make supercapacitors are expensive. Using natural foods like durians and jackfruits, Gomes says, could reduce environmental pollution, as well as costs.
24. What makes some countries have different attitudes toward the durian
A. Its smell. B. Its appearance.
C. Its value. D. Its popularity.
25. Which paragraph mentions Gomes’s inspiration of innovation
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
26. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to

Pioneers of the research that led to one of the first COVID-19 vaccines (疫苗) say breakthroughs obtained in their studies could point the way toward developing a potential vaccine against cancer before the end of the decade.
Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, co-founders of BioNTech said technology they had developed could aid the immune (免疫) system respond to cancer cells. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccine stimulates cells to generate spike proteins, which warn the body’s immune system about things to look out for and to attack.
It is hoped that this could be reworked using proteins found in cancer tumor (肿瘤) cells causing a similar bodily defensive action.
BioNTech was founded in 2008 specifically to work on cancer treatments. “Our focus has always been on achieving the full potential of the body’s immune system to successfully help handle cancer and infectious diseases,” says the company website.
Some of those earlier cancer vaccine developments have reached the clinical trial stage. “As scientists we are always hesitant to say we will have a cure for cancer,” said Tureci. “We have gained a mass of breakthroughs and we will continue to work on them. . . this will definitely quicken also our cancer vaccine.”
Luke O’Neill, professor of biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin, said that such a breakthrough would be “the Holy Grail” of cancer research, He added that it enabled the body to recognize a cancer tumor as a foreign element, in the same way it had done with COVID-19, and to respond accordingly, so that the immune system could be “trained” to “hunt down” the abnormal presence.
What made the potential breakthrough even more inspiring, he said, was that any treatment could be personalized to work on an individual cancer patient’s specific circumstances. “You can take someone who’s got cancer, take their own tumor and make an RNA vaccine out of that and improve their own immune system specifically against their own tumor. That’s a really awesome thing to see,” he added.
28. What has been BioNTech’s mission since its establishment
A. To develop the COVID-19 vaccine. B. To understand the immune system.
C. To explore treatments for cancer. D. To detect the tumour cells.
29. Which of the following options can best describe Ozlem Tureci
A Cautious and committed. B. Gifted and ambitious.
C. Passionate and critical. D. Brave and competitive.
30. What can be learnt about Luke O’Neill
A. He developed an effective COVID-19 vaccine.
B. He held a positive attitude to BioNTech’s study.
C. He contributed significantly to BioNTech’s research.
D. He trained the immune system to hunt the abnormal presence.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. BioNTech suceeds in developing cancer vaccines.
B. COVID-19 research brings hope for cancer treatment.
C. COVID-19 vaccines help bodies respond to cancer cells.
D. BioNTech makes breakthroughs in COVID-19 vaccines.

Have you ever forgotten items when trying to recall a shopping list Or dialled the wrong phone number when attempting to memorise one The brain mechanisms (机制) that cause us to draw a blank in such situations have now been identified.
Our working memory keeps small pieces of information that are readily accessible for planning, understanding and solving problems. But it will have “swap errors”. For example, if we are shown a red square and a blue circle, and are then asked what colour the circle was, we might say red.
To understand why we make such errors, Jeff Johnston at Columbia University and his colleagues recorded the brain activity of two monkeys because a monkey’s working memory is very similar to humans’.
The monkeys were shown two differently coloured squares, one above the other, for half a second. After a short delay, a black spot appeared in the same location as one of the squares, and then disappeared. The animals were trained to tell the colour of the square they were supposed to be remembering based on the location of the spot, by staring at the matching colour on a rotatable (可旋转的) wheel. When doing this for about 3 hours over multiple sessions, the monkeys performed the task correctly between 60 and 82 percent of the time, but occasionally made swap errors.
The research suggests that the brain responses linked to swap errors emerged before the animals decided which colour to report. They appeared to arise during “selection” when certain items stored in working memory are enhanced at the expense of others, rather than occurring as a result of them forgetting or a failure to correctly encode (编码) items in their working memory.
“Everyone assumed there were simpler explanations like failure to encode or forgetting, but this very cool study shows that working memory errors come from a previously unknown source,” says Earl Miller at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The team is planning further experiments to gain a better understanding of mechanisms behind swap errors.
32. What is the function of working memory
A. To identify the errors in understanding.
B. To reduce the occurrence of mind blanking.
C. To develop the way of distinguishing colours.
D. To store information ready for mental use.
33. What were the monkeys tasked with in the research
A. Correcting their errors over multiple sessions.
B. Playing a matching game on a rotatable wheel.
C. Reporting the colour of the square to memorize.
D. Figuring out the exact position of the black spot.
34. What does the research suggest about swap errors
A. They are unusual brain responses. B. They show a tendency for forgetfulness.
C. They have an effect on working memory. D. They are the outcome of memory selection.
35. What is Earl Miller’s attitude towards the research findings
A. Unclear. B. Appreciative. C. Objective. D. Negative.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.

C. Objective. D. Negative.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. B

The animals were trained to tell the colour of the square they were supposed to be remembering based on the location of the spot, by staring at the matching colour on a rotatable (可旋转的) wheel.
根据倒数第二段“The research suggests that the brain responses linked to swap errors emerged before the animals decided which colour to report. They appeared to arise during “selection” when certain items stored in working memory are enhanced at the expense of others, rather than occurring as a result of them forgetting or a failure to correctly encode (编码) items in their working memory.
根据最后一段““Everyone assumed there were simpler explanations like failure to encode or forgetting, but this very cool study shows that working memory errors come from a previously unknown source,” says Earl Miller at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

【答案】One Possible Version:
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word.
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged.
