Story Time
The day came. Grandma was moving out of her big house. I was sad. I had a lot of memories in that house.
I asked where Grandma was moving to. My dad said, “Somewhere near us. Don’t worry.”
But I was worried. I spent a lot of time with Grandma. In fact, I wanted to see her more. I thought no one wanted to tell me because they knew I would be sad. “It must be far away,” I said to myself.
We put all of Grandma’s things in the truck. I sat beside her in the car. On the way, we talked a lot.
After a while, we arrived. I saw her new house.
It was our house! Grandma was coming to live with us.

Southern white rhinos (犀牛) mainly live in Africa. They are very large in size, about 4 metres long, 1.75 metres high, and over two tons in weight. There are two horns (角) on the nose. The front horn is over half a metre long, while the other one is smaller. Southern white rhinos are not really white. They are grey in color. “White” may come from the Afrikaans word for “wide”. It has some connection with their wide mouths.
Southern white rhinos live on grass, leaves, fruit and so on. They have very poor eyesight. However, they have good hearing and an excellent sense of smell. Their skin (皮肤) is nearly 5 cm thick but is very sensitive. During the day, they try to find a cool place to avoid sunburn. Southern white rhinos lie in mud (泥浆) when they can, as it sticks to their skin and protects them from the bright African sun.
Some humans kill rhinos for their horns. They sell horns to those who believe horns have magic powers or can treat sickness. It puts southern white rhinos in danger.
Now many actions are taken to protect southern white rhinos. The international trade in rhino horn has been stopped in the world. Besides, many protected areas have been built, especially in South Africa. Up to 2020, more than 20 countries have made rules to protect southern white rhinos. Today the number of southern white rhinos has increased to over 20,000 in the wild.

Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you something about a famous scientist named Qian Xuesen. He was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in December 1911. After he graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1934, he got a chance to study in the USA. After he graduated, he became a teacher as well as a researcher that studies rockets and missile (导弹) theories (理论).
When he was 44, he returned to our country and the country’s space research was almost a blank (空白). In 1956, he set up the first research institute (研究所) of rockets and missiles. He made such important contributions to the missile and space programs that he was honored as “The Father of China’s Missiles”. The Chinese people are proud of him.
He passed away in October, 2009, but all the Chinese will remember him forever. His devotion to our country was expressed in his saying, “My career (事业) is in China, my success is in China
and my destination (终点) is in China!” When someone said he could make much more money if he stayed in the United States, he laughed and said, “My family name is Qian, but I don’t like qian.” His spirit encourages us to love our country and devote ourselves to science.

Have you seen the clay soldiers (士兵) in Xi’an’s terracotta museum Do you know the true colors of them
More than 2,000 years ago, Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, ordered people to build the Terracotta Army. He hoped that the army would guard him after he died.
In 1974, some farmers found several clay soldiers by accident in Xi’an. After that, about 8,000 more were found by archeologists (考古学家). Today, the clay soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are light brown. But they weren’t always this color. When they were made, they had the colors of white, green, blue, red, purple and yellow. Sadly, most of the colors disappeared today.
An area with more than a hundred clay soldiers was discovered by archeologists a few years ago. Many of them still had black hair, pink faces and black or brown eyes when they were found. If they
were not protected well, their colors would disappear, too. After a clay soldier was found, archeologists used two steps to keep its color. First, they sprayed (喷) a special “water” on it. Then, they covered it in plastic.
Archeologists are facing a new challenge now. They are going to find a way to put the colors onto the clay soldiers again. If they succeed in doing it, people will be able to see what the clay soldiers originally (最初) looked like. It must be very amazing.

Wearing in Britain and the US
These days, most people in Britain and the US do not wear very formally. But sometimes it is important to wear the right thing.
Many British people don’t think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas, and concerts you can put on what you like from beautiful suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy.
But in Britain, as well as in the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people wear formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and wear tidy clothes.
In many ways, Americans are less formal than British people, but they are careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look nice. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes.
It is difficult to say exactly what people wear in Britain and the US, because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. You will feel more comfortable if you don’t look too different from everyone else.

Green Energy for Today and Tomorrow
Did you know that most of the energy we use comes from the sun For example, the sun helps plants to grow. Plants that grew millions of years ago turned into coal, oil, and natural gas (天然气). We call these fossil fuels (化石燃料).
However, fossil fuels make pollution. This is bad for the earth. Fossil fuels are also nonrenewable. Some day they will be gone. So, scientists want people to use green energy. Why is green energy important First, it is clean. It doesn’t hurt the earth. Next, it is renewable. It won’t run out. Green energy gives us almost 25% of the electricity we use today.
What are the main sources (来源) of green energy
Water Power
Water power uses moving water in rivers and dams (堤坝). Moving water has energy. Water power makes 16.6% of the electricity we use.
Wind Power
Is wind power new No, it isn’t. People used wind power many years ago. Wind power makes 4% of the electricity we use.
Solar Power
Solar power comes from sunlight. The sun shines on solar panels (太阳能板), and electricity is made. Solar power is now as cheap as some fossil fuels. It makes 15% of the electricity we use.
Biomass (生物质能)
Biomass is energy that we get from plants around us. For example, deadwood or grass is burned in power stations. This makes electricity. Biomass is green energy because we plant new trees or crops (庄稼) after we use it. Biomass makes 2% of the electricity we use.
New Green Energy
Ocean rises and falls each day. This moving water can make electricity. We call it tide power. There is also heat under the earth’s surface. Scientists can use this heat for energy, which is called heat power. We may find other sources of green energy in the future.
Someday, green energy could make 100% of the electricity we use. That’s good news for the Earth!

The sun was shining brightly over our heads and sweat (汗水) was pouring down our backs and faces. We stood still without making any noise, all hot and tired. But everyone kept standing as straight as trees.
It was something most junior high schools give to new Junior One students-military (军事的) training. We spent four days in a
closed environment. Although we couldn’t go home at night and the training was strict and difficult, our humorous young sergeant (教官) was a real pleasure of our days. We laughed at his jokes, sat in rows singing different songs and listened to him telling true stories about his life. He gave us the feeling that sunlight and sweat were not the only things that military training offered.
After this journey, we were stronger than we had imagined and we were much braver than we had expected. Students who looked pale rested for a little while, then right away came back to the team.
Students who were late rushed to the playground at once and began to run. Sweat poured down our faces, but we didn’t care about it at all.
Military training taught us to be brave and strong and never give up. On the last day of our training, the confidence could be seen on our faces. We shouted so loud that our voices could be heard across the sky. With eyes like burning fire, we walked into the future. Now the sun is smiling at all of us.

Cyclocross is cross-country bicycle racing. Racers spend only part of a race on their bikes because only part of the two-mile race is smooth. Other parts of the race have the challenge of obstacles (障碍). When racers reach them, they can ride over them, or pick up their bikes and run.
To be a top racer, you must dismount without slowing down at all. To do this, swing your right leg over the bike seat. At the same time, move the bike away from your body. This makes room for your right foot to hit the ground next to your left foot. As your right foot nears the ground, take your left foot away from the bike. Put both feet on the ground and start running!
As soon as you are running, you have to decide what to do with your bike. You may shoulder it or lift it. It’s important to practice both skills. Sometimes you need to run fast and jump over some
obstacles. As your feet hit the ground, you reach down and catch the bottom of your bike. Lift up carefully and keep the bike on your right shoulder while you run. Sometimes you may lift your bike. You catch the top of your bike. Then you lift the bike high enough to get over the obstacles and carefully put the bike on the ground.
After you have carried your bike across an obstacle, you will need to remount. As soon as your bike is on the ground, push off with your left leg, swing your right leg over the bike seat, and move into riding position. Remounting can be the hardest skill of cyclocross. You can learn by watching someone who remounts well.
Cyclocross is a great way to stay active and have fun. However, it can be dangerous. Make sure that you are well prepared. Then, you will just need to go!

“Do you know Macao was never my real name I have been away from you for too long, mother...”
Song of the Seven Sons—Macao, written by Wen Yiduo in 1925, is still in the hearts of Macao’s teenagers today. The Basic Law of Macao Special Administrative Region (《中华人民共和国澳门特别行政区基本法》) came out in 1993 and started to work on Dec. 20, 1999, as Macao returned to China. From then on, it has become much
easier for young people to build a closer relationship with their motherland.
Chan U, an 18-year-old, is studying at the University of Macao. She said, “Traveling to the Chinese mainland (大陆) has become easier. Visits to Zhuhai have become a part of the daily life of some people.” Kun Lot U, 25, studies at the South China University of Technology. She said, “Many local people go to Zhuhai to buy vegetables as they are fresher and cheaper than those in local markets. Young people often go to Zhuhai to play jubensha, a role-playing game.”
The number of trips out of Macao in January was 2. 23 million, and most of them went to the Chinese mainland. Cities like Chongqing, Changsha and Hangzhou are popular places for young people, according to Chan. Guangdong is also a good choice since the language and food are similar.
“Young people in Macao care a lot about what’s happening on the mainland,” said Kun. Like the young people on the Chinese mainland, they also use apps from the Chinese mainland to know the hot issues (话题). They have learned many Chinese mainland Internet
catchphrases (流行语). “I know about the most popular ones such as ‘yyds’,” said Kun. “They make us understand more about people and life on the Chinese mainland.”
More than half of the people in Macao use online shopping apps from the Chinese mainland. Kun said that it’s because they can find almost everything they need at good prices on the apps. The products are first shipped to a collection station in Macao. It usually takes about three to seven days for local people to get the products. “The connection between Macao and the motherland is getting stronger and stronger,” said Chan.

Times change! The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I was sad. The bookstore had been in the neighborhood for 50 years, and it was a great place where people could connect through their love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he told me it was difficult to run (运营) a traditional bookstore. Most young people preferred reading e-books and more people bought books online.
Childhood memories came back to me so clearly. A group of us kids often went to the store. We looked at the new books, or just talked with Tim. We spent hours reading there. Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even
had a coffee shop selling nice food. Clearly, the Bright Bookstore was in good, creative hands.
Tim told me that there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings and even concerts and movie nights. The bookstore was turned into a place where the book lovers got together and shared ideas and experiences.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted it to offer to the community is still here,” said Tim.
No matter how times change, there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores should also change in a creative way.

One pleasant evening, I was holding Grandpa’s hand and taking a walk in the park. “Where are the peanuts Give me now!” He suddenly said. How I wished I had some with me! “Oh, my little Tom, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanuts.” I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Tom, Grandpa!” He had forgotten who I was, but he would always be my beloved grandfather.

Motuo lies in the south of the Himalayas in Tibet. It is known as the “Natural Museum of Tibet”. It is home to all kinds of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, plants and animals. Its special geographic location (地理位置) makes it a beautiful place. It was one of the hardest places to reach and was the last city in China without a highway.
The construction (施工) of the first highway to Motuo started in the 1960s. However, it was no completed until over 50 years later. In 2014, the construction of its second highway—the Paimo Highway started. In October 2022, the construction of the main body of the highway was completed.
They are great engineering projects. In this area, earthquakes and heavy rains happened very often. There could be falling rocks or even landslides (滑坡). People must build many walls and nets to protect the two highways. Another challenge was the snow. Plenty of snow
sometimes destroyed rocks and roads. As a result, the construction of the highways to Motuo was stopped several times. To solve this problem, people built a tunnel (隧道) that goes through the mountain area.
The two highways stand for the Chinese spirit of “never giving up”. They are ways to connect Motuo to the outside world and show how China cares about people in the far areas.

Do Kids Need Homework
School is a big part of life, not just for kids but for their families. There are many reports and discussions about what’s best for students. Everyone has their own opinions. And they don’t always agree.
Do kids need homework It depends. Some readers from a famous magazine, think that the extra (额外的) work reviews what they have learnt in class. And it also helps teachers find where students need more help. Others say homework adds to students’ stress and takes time away from exercise or learning something new. In order to know what kind of homework kids should do and how much kids need, the magazine interviewed several kids.
Karen, 9
Kids need homework. When they learn something new in school, reviewing it at home helps them remember it. Our homework gives our teachers valuable information. It tells them how much students are paying attention in class and who needs extra help.
Michael, 9
In my opinion, giving students homework is a bad idea. After school kids need experiences that build a healthy mind and body. Homework is not supposed to stress kids out. When there is too much homework, students do poorly in homework. In fact, doing homework poorly is worse than doing no homework. As long as students are working hard in class, it’s best not to give them extra work.
Robert, 8
Kids need homework. But that depends. Middle and high school students can do more homework. At my school, primary students get homework, but not too much. My teacher might ask us to learn spelling words at home, and each week we’ll be given a test.
Susan, 11
Kids don’t need homework. They’re learning for six hours a day at school. Adding another hour of work for kids to do at home is just having them repeat what they’ve been doing all day. Besides, homework takes time away from activities like team sports. These are just as important as schoolwork, because they keep kids active.

There were actors performing Qinqiang Opera at the Tang Paradise on February 5th, 2023. Tang Paradise, located in the south of Xi’an, is a large cultural theme park showing the lifestyle of the Tang Dynasty. Qinqiang Opera, which came from the ancient folk songs and dances of the people in Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces, is one of the longest-
live forms of opera in China. According to historical records, the local opera dates all the way back to the Qin Dynasty (221BC~207BC). Qinqiang Opera is a reflection of ancient Chinese people’s daily life and feelings.
However, the development of pop and Western music influenced Qinqiang Opera deep in the 1990s. During this difficult time, many Qinqiang Opera actors had no choice but to leave the opera stage where they performed. They then took on several jobs to make a living, including working as businessmen, running clothing shops and acting in small film roles.
Qinqiang Opera was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006. It has a great influence on the development of Qinqiang Opera. About ten years ago, the audiences were mostly old people. Now lots of young audiences pour in and Qinqiang Opera performances are warmly welcomed. Astronauts would face dangers both getting to and surviving (生存) on Mars. Let’s learn about surviving a trip to Mars.
What would it take to keep people safe and healthy on a trip to Mars Scientists are already working on it though the trip may be many years later.
Over the last 60 years, many spacecraft (航天器) have flown by, orbited (沿轨道运行) and even landed on the Red Planet. However, humans could work faster and smarter than machines. That’s why the United States, China and other countries want to send people to Mars. But surviving this trip would not be easy.
A trip to Mars would be the farthest journey in human history. Mars is about 225 million kilometers away, so it would take astronauts at least six months to reach there. However, it only takes a few days to get to the moon.
While space travel is never free of danger, it takes a lot more health risks to travel in space for a long time. For one thing, staying in space for long periods makes the human body weak. Also, it puts pressure behind the eyes and causes eye problems. But gravity (重力) machines could help.
Then there’s space radiation (辐射) to worry about. It might raise the risk of health problems, especially for astronauts who will have long journeys. Scientists are working out the problems. They have found taking certain vitamins (维生素) can help.
Astronauts will have to pack light to lift off from Earth. But they won’t be able to get things they need like astronauts on the space station do. Astronauts on the space station practice for this by growing lettuce and other food in space. Engineers are developing 3-D printing techniques which could allow future Mars astronauts to build tools as needed.

I made a long journey one fine morning. I set out to travel across to the other side of my island.
Of course, I carried my gun with me. In my pocket were two biscuits. My dog followed behind me. I went past my summer house, and toward evening came to a fine open place close by the sea. It
was a beautiful sight. The sky was clear and the air was quiet. The water stretched (延伸) away and away toward the setting sun.
I found this side of the island much more beautiful than that where my castle (城堡) was. Here were large, open fields, green with grass and sweet with flowers.
I saw many green parrots among the trees, and I thought how I would catch one and teach it to talk. After a great deal of time, I knocked a young one down with my stick. He was a good fighter, and it was no easy matter to get him. But at last I picked him up and put him in my bag.
He was not hurt, and I carried him home. It was a long time before I could make him talk. But at last, he became a great pet and would call me by my name.
Besides parrots there were many other birds in the woods. I traveled very slowly around the island, for I wished to see everything. Often I did not go more than two miles in a day.

①The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms. The Spring Equinox (春分), as the fourth term of the year starts on March 21 and ends on April 4 this year. When the Spring Equinox comes, the time of the day is the same as the time of the night. Here are things you may not know about the Spring Equinox.
②Eating spring vegetables: Eating spring vegetables during the Spring Equinox is a custom in China. “Spring vegetables” refers to seasonal vegetables that differ from place to place. The ancient teachings in the Chinese classic, Huangdi Neijing, suggests that people eat seasonal foods to help keep healthy and bring good luck.
③Swallows fly north: The ancient Chinese people divided the fifteen days of the Spring Equinox into three “hou’s,” or five-day parts. As the Chinese old saying goes, swallows fly back to the north in the first hou; thunder cracks the sky in the second hou; lightning occurs frequently in the third hou.
④Egg-standing games: Standing an egg upright is a popular game across the country during the Spring Equinox. It is an old custom that dates back to 4,000 years ago. People practice this tradition to celebrate the coming of spring. It is believed that if someone can make the egg stand, he will have good luck in the future.
⑤Flying kites: Spring Equinox is a good time to fly kites. In ancient times, people did not have good medical resources. So to pray for health, they wrote their illness on paper kite. When the kite was in the air, people would cut off the string to let the paper kite fly away. Later flying kites developed into a popular game of spring. On the Spring Equinox, people write a blessing on the kite, hoping that the gods in the sky would see it.
⑥Reward farm cattle: This practice is popular in the southern area of the Yangtze River. As the Spring Equinox comes, farm work starts and both the farmers and the cattle start to become busy. Farmers will reward cattle with rice balls to express their thankfulness.

There is a saying that “earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.” It seems sadly true. Tens of thousands of people died under bricks of the damaged (毁坏的) buildings in Turkiye and Syria during the recent earthquakes. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof buildings Engineers have some life-saving ideas.
Lift the house up
To prevent earthquake waves from going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building’s foundation (地基) above the ground. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are usually made up of steel and rubber (橡胶). During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays steady (平稳的). This can reduce the earthquake’s intensity (强度)by 13 to 15 percent according to the architecture website Rethinking the Future.
Right materials
Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to bend (弯曲) without breaking. Some of these materials include steel, wood, memory alloy (记忆合金) and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood. During earthquakes, wooden buildings bend to avoid building up stress. Modern tall buildings usually mix concrete (混凝土) with steel. Concrete makes the building strong enough while steel increases its ductility (延展性).
