As a child Darrin, who was born and raised in Cameroon, was fascinated by Chinese martial arts. He dreamed about learning the discipline and visiting China one day.
In 2016, Darrin, who was a university student majoring in material science in Cameroon, started to learn Chinese at the Confucius Institute(孔子学院). Aside from martial arts, he got to know about the country through photos and videos. After a year of learning Chinese, Darin arrived in Kaifeng, as a language student at Henan University.
“When I saw the kung fu masters practice, it was like a dream come true. I was told that martial arts is more than the powerful movements. Like self-defense, it is about a way of life, which is full of Chinese philosophy,” says Darrin.
Since 2017, Darrin has entered many martial arts competitions, especially for tai chi, and won a number of awards. He says that tai chi helps him become strong and healthy, stay in good shape and develop excellent concentration, “Tai chi helps me gain my balance, physically and mentally,” says. “It changed me.”
Besides tai chi, Darrin also learned to perform Yuju Opera, which is known for its melodic singing, amazing martial arts movements and stories. In 2017, Darrin watched a Yuju Opera performance, Hua Mulan, for the first time after arriving in Kaifeng. “The story is full of drama. The singing of the performers and the live band were full of energy,” recalls Darrin, who later studied Yuju Opera with artist Li Shujian, “Since Yuju Opera is performed in the Henan dialect, he had to learn the dialect first. He learned and practiced very hard,” says Li.
In 2019, Dari performed Yuju Opera on the popular TV show, Li Yuan Chun, produced and broadcast by Henan TV. Under his Chinese name, Liu Banjing, Darrin won second place in one of the TV shows. Darrin notes that Kaifeng was formerly known as Bianjing in ancient China.
“I have made lots of rinds here and I am considering living and working in China after graduation,” says Darrin.
4. How did Darrin know about China besides Chinese martial arts

In this digital age, people measure their popularity by the number of “likes” and followers they get on social media. But as it turns out, people are happier when their friends are of high quality rather than huge quantity.
Scientists from the University of Leeds in the UK studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1,500 people. Those who took the survey gave details about their age, social interactions, and how satisfied they were with their social lives. The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally tended to be happier than those who had a large number of superficial (关系浅表的) friends.
“Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Bruine de Bruin, one of the researchers.
He found that older people tended to have smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles tended to be closer to them. He also found that younger people tended to have larger social circles that were made up of “peripheral(次要的) others”— people who are not their true friends, but just the ones they know. These people had no influence on their happiness.
The results of the study show that the opinion society has about old people being sad and lonely might not be accurate.
“The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks don’t decrease their social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults tend to report a better sense of well-being than younger adults,” said Bruine de Bruin.
8. According to the study, people tend to be happier when they ______.
A. have friends of huge quantity B. have a small circle of close friends
C. have a lot of followers on social media D. make friends with older people
9. What do we know from paragraph 4
A. Older people’s friends seem to be of higher quality.
B. Younger people don’t need to make peripheral friends.
C. Older people’s happiness has nothing to do with their friends.
D. Both older and younger people find it hard to make close friends.
10. Which word might Bruine de Bruin use to describe older adults
A. Sad. B. Happy. C. Lonely. D. Concerned
11. What is the focus of this article
A. Different types of friends in one’s life.
B. Changes in people’s happiness levels.
C. Interactions between older and younger people.
D. The relationship between happiness and the quality and quantity of friends.
D
Earthquakes are common natural disasters. No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary.
Some experts believe that when you feel the ground is shaking, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. Most earthquake injuries are the result of being hit by something falling on you. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines. Many people think that in case of an earthquake, they should “get under something” like a doorway or desk, in order to avoid being hurt by falling objects. Rescue experts now say this is the wrong thing to do. For example, in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, they found hundreds of children in schools, crushed by their desks. However, they could have survived by lying in the aisle (通道,走道) next to their desks.
So find a nice piece of furniture, a chair, a sofa, and lie down, or curl up next to it. A falling roof may compact (压实) the furniture, but will still leave a space for you to survive next to it. This also holds true if you are in a hotel room, especially at night. Get off the bed, and lie down next to it.
In San Francisco’s 1989 earthquake, the upper freeway fell on the lower one. People who drove along were crushed in their cars. But they had time to get out and lie down next to their cars. Yes, their cars were crushed, but there was space from top to bottom next to the vehicles for people to survive and wait a rescue.
Doorways and stairways are very unsafe. Stay away from those.
What can we do to keep ourselves safe Staying calm is the first and most important rule when facing accidents
12. Which word can replace the underlined word “crushed” in Paragraph 2
A. hidden B. protected C. caught D. killed
13. How can we probably get a narrow escape from an earthquake
A. Lie down under a table or desk.
B. Shout out loudly and ask for help.
C. Run out of the house and stay under a big tree.
D. Lie down next to a strong piece of furniture or a car.
14. What should you do first when accidents happen according to this passage
A. Keep calm. B. Drop down.
C. Get under buildings. D. Stay near trees.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. Right Earthquake Survival Tips B. The New Idea of the Rescue Experts
C. Great Damages Caused by Earthquake D. A Common Natural Disaster-earthquake

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs... How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.

B 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第二段第三句提到“The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally tended to be happier than those who had a large number of superficial(关系浅表的)friends.(研究人员发现,那些有少数亲密朋友的人通常比那些有着大量肤浅朋友的人更快乐。)”
根据第四段“He found that older people tended to have smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles tended to be closer to them. He also found that younger people tended to have larger social circles that were made up of “peripheral(次要的) others”— people who are not their true friends, but just the ones they know. These people had no influence on their happiness.(他发现,老年人的社交圈往往比年轻人小,但社交圈里的人往往与他们更亲近。他还发现,年轻人往往有更大的社交圈,这些社交圈由“外围人”组成——这些人不是他们真正的朋友,只是他们认识的人。这些人对他们的幸福没有影响。)可知,研究发现,尽管较年长的人的社交圈比年轻人小,但圈子里的人往往和他们之间的关系更亲密。由此可知,较年长的人的朋友质量更高。故选A项 。
根据最后一段Bruine de Bruin的话中的“In fact, older adults tend to report a better sense of well-being than younger adults(事实上,老年人往往比年轻人更幸福。)”
根据第一段中“But as it turns out, people are happiest when their friends are high quality - not high quantity.(但事实证明,人们最快乐的时候是他们的朋友质量高,而不是数量多)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项关于人的幸福感与其朋友数量和质量的关系的研究。

What can we do to keep ourselves safe Staying calm is the first and most important rule when facing accidents.
12. Which word can replace the underlined word “crushed” in Paragraph 2
A. hidden B. protected C. caught D. killed
13. How can we probably get a narrow escape from an earthquake
A. Lie down under a table or desk.
B. Shout out loudly and ask for help.
C. Run out of the house and stay under a big tree.
D. Lie down next to a strong piece of furniture or a car.
14. What should you do first when accidents happen according to this passage
A. Keep calm. B. Drop down.
C. Get under buildings. D. Stay near trees.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. Right Earthquake Survival Tips B. The New Idea of the Rescue Experts
C. Great Damages Caused by Earthquake D. A Common Natural Disaster-earthquake
D 13. D 14. A 15. A

根据划线词所在句子及下一句“ For example, in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, they found hundreds of children in schools, crushed by their desks. However, they could have survived by lying in the aisle (通道,走道) next to their desks.(例如,在1985年墨西哥城地震中,他们发现学校里有数百名儿童被桌子crushed。然而,如果他们躺在桌子旁边的过道里,就有可能活下来)”可知,那些躲在课桌下的孩子被压死了,因此crushed意为“killed”,故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“So find a nice piece of furniture, a chair, a sofa, and lie down, or curl up next to it. A falling roof may compact the furniture, but will still leave a space for you to survive next to it(所以找一件漂亮的家具,一把椅子,一个沙发,躺下来,或者蜷缩在它旁边。倒塌的屋顶可能会压紧家具,但仍会为你在它旁边留下生存的空间)”和倒数第三段的“Yes, their cars were crashed but there was space from top to bottom next to the vehicles for people to survive and await a rescue(是的,他们的车被撞坏了,但在车的旁边有从上到下的空间供人们生存和等待救援)”可知,在一件结实的家具或一辆汽车旁边躺下可以使我们从地震中死里逃生,故选D。
根据最后一段的“Staying calm is the first and most important rule when facing accidents.(当面对事故时,镇定是首要也是最重要的规则)”可知,当事故发生时,你应该首先保持冷静,故选A。
根据第一段“Earthquakes are common natural disasters. No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary.(地震是常见的自然灾害。无论你在哪里,知道如何在地震中保护自己和家人是必要的)”结合文章主要讲的是如何在地震中保护自己和家人。可知,A选项“正确的地震求生技巧”最符合文章标题。故选A。

Second-hand shopping also applies to many other categories of consumer goods such as furniture, cars and children’s toys.(你知道生产一件普通T恤需要700多加仑的水吗?

“Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.

Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!” Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. In the woods, they worked hard to find a straight tree and set to work. After cutting the tree down, they took the bark (树皮) off with a knife. After an hour, a hand-made cane was finally made, which was smooth and was just of the right size. The two brothers were sure that their grandpa would love it!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. The moment grandpa took the cane with shaking hands, he cried with joy, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack shouted, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods!” Grandpa smiled at the boys and seized the cane in his right hand, trying to stand up. To their amazement, he did it! Everyone was excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed grandfather’s eyes were wet. What a wonderful gift he had ever got!
