Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a businessman for a life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut (小屋) in Uganda, East Africa.
Pedley admitted that he had not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. “I had always put the pursuit (追求) of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting,” says Pedley.
But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. “I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing were thanking me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them, ”he said. Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. There he will help run an organisation that hopes to improve the quality of life for people in the village of Kigazi. He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.
Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a “camp” in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents to poverty or disease. Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.

Cows produce much methane, the world’s second worst greenhouse gas, as they breakdown the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food.
Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They added a small amount of seaweed to the cows’ food.
The consequences were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33%less methane. Over the five months, the scientists didn’t see any signs that the cows’ stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What’s more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows.
But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there’s not adequate seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there’s no chance to feed them seaweed every day.
Still, as the study shows, something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.
28. Why did the researchers carry out the study
A. To discover healthier grass for cows. B. To improve the cows’ living conditions.
C. To test the effects of the seaweed. D. To measure the amount of methane in the world.
29. What’s the third paragraph mainly about
A. The results of the study. B. The methods of the experiment.
C. The background of the subject. D. The process of the research.
30. What does the underlined word “adequate” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Lacking. B. Enough. C. Common. D. Special.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings
A Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Negative.

“It will be a rewarding experience to participate in events in the Forbidden City and other historical palaces in the capital city,” says Yang. She believes that classics will never go out of style as the popularity of sprouts increases around the world.

Ways to Save Money on Healthy Food
Contrary to what you may have heard, eating healthy doesn’t have to be really expensive. Here are expert tips on how to have a healthy diet on a budget.
Cook at home
____36____. Instead of going out to buy pre-made healthy food from stores, get the ingredients and make them by yourself. If making entire meals is not your thing, or you don’t have the time, you can make a simple salad.
____37____
Visit your local farmers’ market for fresh and in-season fruits and vegetables. Shopping for produce that is in season is a lot cheaper than buying produce that isn’t, and the best place to know what’s in season is at a farmers’ market. Farmers’ markets are budget-friendly because farmers bring their goods directly to customers without interference (介入) from shipping agents, retailers and other go-betweens. ___38___.
Prepare meals in advance
Sometimes the last thing you want to do after a long day is cook. To avoid reaching for the takeout menu in these situations, set aside one day a week to meal preparing. ___39___. To keep it simple and healthy, experts suggest having one source of protein in each meal, at least one vegetable and a whole grain. Making healthy meals in this way saves you time and money, and makes it easy to eat healthy.
Stock up (储备) on frozen produce
Buying frozen fruits and vegetables is a great way to eat healthy on a budget. Frozen produce cuts about 30%less than fresh produce. Plus, fruits and vegetables will last a lot longer and usually can be chopped (切) and ready to go, so you don’t have to spend time washing and cutting. ___40___.
A. Eat less meat and dairy
B. Shop at your local farmers’ market
C. Meal preparing doesn’t have to be difficult
D. Make sure you use your produce fully and try not to waste anything
E. One of the main ways to eat healthier and save money is to cook at home

After I helped her into the taxi, she gave me an address and asked, “Could you drive through downtown ” “It is not the shortest way,” I answered quickly. “I don’t mind,” She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I looked in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). “What route would you like me to take ” I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly and whispered a “Thank you”.
I said goodbye to her. She waved to me with a gentle smile and walked to the door of hospice. I turned around and walked into the dim morning light.
