One day, during break, his best friend, Jim, with a curious look in his eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year ” Jim asked, sensing Sam’s sadness.

On the day of Sam’s birthday, he went to school and found his classroom in total darkness. A wave of confusion washed over him as he stepped hesitantly into the room, his heart pounding. He reached for the light switch, but before his hand could find it, a chorus of voices broke the silence. “Surprise!”, his classmates, led by Jim, jumped out from all sorts of hiding places. As the room flooded with light, Sam’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The classroom was decorated with balloons and streamers, a beautiful cake sat on the teacher’s desk, and in the corner, a pile of presents waited to be unwrapped.
Tears sprang from Sam’s eyes and his face broke into a radiant smile. He turned towards Jim, who was grinning from ear to ear. “We knew you couldn’t have a party this year, so we decided to bring the party to you,” Jim said, his eyes twinkling with mischief. The cloud of confusion lifted from Sam’s mind as he realized that his friends hadn’t been distancing themselves from him, they were planning this surprise all along. The sadness that had been looming over his birthday disappeared, replaced with joy and gratitude. As he cut the cake and opened his presents, Sam realized that this was indeed a grand birthday party, just like the ones he used to have.

In the town of Greenfield, a group of three adventurous spirits—Jack, Simon, and Lucas—had discovered an ancient map in Jack’s grandfather’s house. The map, yellowed with age, described a mysterious island that had the legendary(传说的) Silver Falcon, a statue that was said to award its finder enormous wisdom and fortune.
As typical eighth graders with the excitement of discovery and dreams of greatness, they decided they would be the ones to discover this hidden treasure. They agreed to start this search during the up-and-coming spring break, keeping their plans a secret from the adults who would undoubtedly discourage such a dangerous adventure.
The days that followed were filled with preparation. They read books on survival, learned about the stars for navigation, and tested their courage in smaller woods. The boys were united by their unshakable resolve and the promise of an adventure that could change their lives forever.
As spring break began, they set out just as the sun painted the sky with colors of orange and gold. They felt a
mixture of excitement and slight nervousness. They carried backpacks filled with supplies and the ancient map that they hoped would lead them to glory.
The beginning of their journey was full of laughter and songs around the campfire, but as days passed, the trip's reality set in. The path grew more dangerous, and the maps guided them through thick woods and muddy wetlands. They learned to work together as their friendship was tested by constant challenges. Slowly, the island drew nearer.
A conflict arose when they reached the foot of Mount Veritas, the final barrier before reaching the island. Lucas twisted his ankle, and the slightest movement sent sharp pains shooting through his leg. With time running out, Jack and Simon had to make a choice: should they push on and risk Lucas’ well-being or turn back after coming so far

【答案】范文
At crossroads, Jack and Simon exchanged knowing glances. They realized they couldn’t leave Lucas behind and that the statue could wait, but their friendship could not. With great determination and strengthened bonds, they constructed a makeshift stretcher and carried Lucas through the last leg of their journey. As they reached the top of the last hill, the island revealed itself in all its glory. It was more impressive than they could have ever imagined. The Silver Falcon stood in the center, its wings shining in the sunlight.
When reaching the Silver Falcon, the three boys found no fortune there at all. At that time, they realized the true treasure of their journey. It wasn't about the wisdom or fortune the Silver Falcon could bring—it was about the memories they had created together and the lessons they learned along the way. In an unexpected turn, the Silver
Falcon seemed to acknowledge their growth. As they stood before it, its eyes shone brightly, and the forest around them came alive with the songs of birds and rustling leaves. A soft voice filled the clearing, congratulating them on their bravery and unity.

It was Lauren’s birthday and she told everyone in our class that there would be a magician. I really didn’t want to go because I always felt very nervous and scared if I had to go anywhere there would be lots of people (like basically everywhere). Also because the day before my dad had told me that sometimes magicians cut people in half.
I cried a lot when we got there so Mum said I could stay next to her.
But when the magician got there we all had to go and sit down on the floor to watch the magic. He said “Hello, boys and girls! I’m Magic Andy!” in the loudest voice ever. Then he made everyone shout “Hello, Magic Andy! ”at him again and again, louder and louder, only I couldn’t open my mouth to say anything so I couldn’t join in.
Then Magic Andy said, “Now, who would like to be my special magical assistant ” And straight away I thought, Not Me. I don't like standing up in front of people, I don't like anyone looking at me, and I had decided by then that I didn't like magicians very much either. So everyone put their hands up apart from me. And it was a bit like being in An Actual Nightmare (噩梦) because Magic Andy did something I thought was against the law - he picked me to be his volunteer. The only person without a raised hand who really did not want to be his volunteer.
Everyone turned and stared, and I felt like they were playing a trick on me or something, because I had accidentally volunteered myself by Definitely Not Volunteering. I felt hot and dizzy and I couldn't move my head to see if Mum was behind me. I was frozen to the spot but someone helped me up to the front and everyone was clapping.

As I stood on stage, I felt extremely nervous. My heart pounded against my chest like a wild drum. Magic Andy gave me a magician’s hat and told me I would help him with his disappearing act. I was so nervous that I almost dropped the hat, but managed to put it on my head. I held my breath and closed my eyes tightly, afraid of what was to come. When I opened my eyes again, I was relieved to see that I had not disappeared- just the top hat had disappeared! A sense of excitement rushed through me.
Magic Andy continued with more tricks and I slowly began to relax. I found myself laughing and clapping along with the audience, enjoying the show. When it was over, Magic Andy approached me, saying that I was a great assistant and that I should try doing magic tricks of my own. I couldn’t help but feel proud. As we left, I felt a newfound confidence in myself. I was no longer the shy and nervous person I had been before. Magic Andy had not only put on a fantastic show but had also helped me to overcome my fears.

Every time I think of the card attached with a picture, it reminds me that success is important, but why not sometimes just admit the journey, regardless of success or failure, and show our approval Our approval may bring us another story, while for others, another chapter of life.
One month ago, I was temporarily appointed to be in charge of a class, when they just finished an important exam. A boy walking out of the classroom with his friends greeted me happily. The sunny smile on his face showed his confidence in the exam. He was Mark, a top A student. During the following days, Mark impressed me with his optimism in class and after class.
One Monday morning, as I rushed towards my office, I encountered Mark. We greeted each other, but his “good morning” face wasn’t as bright as usual. “Maybe he doesn’t like Monday as much as I do.” I thought jokingly.
At the office, Mark’s less-than-enthusiastic look reminded me of his sunny smile. Recalling the first time we met, I drew a boy with a broad smile and sparkling eyes. As a new teacher, pupils like Mark were my favourite. Personally, they learned by heart, and always met our expectations. Moreover, they were easily satisfied. Even a simple “Well done!” could brighten their day. To encourage students, I had my own award system, including empty cards, where I would write three or four sentences of encouragement based on students’ individual situations.
As I enjoyed the pleasure of getting a new idea, I heard a knock at the door. It was Mark, dragging his feet with his head down, “Madam, I’m upset.” His words amazed me. What could make such an excellent student so down I asked if he had problems with his friends, but he shook his head. Concerned, I inquired if he was being bullied, but received the same response.
“Do your parents put pressure on you ” I wondered. As for this question, Mark’s voice began to tremble and he lowered his head again, whispering, “They trust me and expect me to get better and better. I had been doing my best but I got the third place in the exam.”

【答案】
Hearing his words, I was lost in thought. This little boy got depressed just because he thought he didn’t live up to his parents’ expectations by getting better grades than being the third. Seeing his sad face, I wrote something on a card. Then I sighed and said gently, “Mark, you should know that you’re always an excellent student. Success shouldn’t be measured by grades. What matters most is the journey you take.” “But how should I do ” Mark said. “Here is the card I write specially for you. Have a look!” I said and handed him the card.
With my encouragement, Mark opened the card. It read, “Remember, you must admit your effort put in your daily work regardless of success or failure. If you do this, you’ll find you are taking a more meaningful journey.” His little face seemed to light up when he read the words. He said, “Madam, thank you a lot! Your words make me feel better. And I will pay more attention to the daily effort rather than the grade in the exam.” Hearing what he said, I felt relieved. The next morning, I met him at the school gate, and he greeted me again with his usual “good morning” face.

I faced a tight budget when I was nine. On November Ist, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before Christmas I didn’t have enough to buy presents for the family.
I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year’s pocket money, so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening, I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine. Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具). Normally, I would have passed right over the ads, but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.
The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products
were of high quality. With my parents’ help, I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.
My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur’s shoebox it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder (活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.
Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

【答案】
Wasting no time, I set off and knocked on doors in my neighborhood. Gathering my courage, I introduced myself as the young representative of the well-known greeting-card company. The initial responses were mixed — some were hesitant, while others were fascinated by the idea of a child engaged in such a venture. As I showcased the high-quality cards and shared the story behind each design, the doubt began to fade away, replaced by genuine interest. Surprisingly, my shy character transformed into enthusiasm, and I found myself engaging in conversations that extended beyond the purpose of sales.
Eventually, I earned over $20, a large sum of money for a 9-year-old kid in 1954. The community’s response exceeded my expectations, and the support I received went beyond mere financial transactions. Neighbors were not just buying cards; they were encouraging a young entrepreneur. This unexpected journey into sales not only alleviated my financial concerns for Christmas but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. It broadened my horizons and laid the foundation for a newfound belief in the possibilities that determination and courage could unfold, regardless of age.

Sam’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled his heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and he had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by his friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and his parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on him, forcing Sam to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event he enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, his best friend, Jim, with a curious look in his eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year ” Jim asked, sensing Sam’s sadness.
“No,” Sam sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”
He smiled weakly, trying to conceal his immense disappointment and stress, but Jim saw through his pretence (假装) easily. Jim nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sam saw his talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sam went over to them, but as soon as Jim saw him, he quickly walked away. Sam was startled by Jim’s strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
“What did he say ” Sam asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged and walked away with Jim, leaving Sam standing there. feeling left out and anxious.
What is happening San wondered anxiously. Are they keeping something from me
As Sam’s birthday drew nearer, Jim was often found chatting softly with his other classmates. Whenever Sam went over to them, they would just walk away or tell him that they were talking about a secret which Sam was not allowed to know. Jim has never kept secrets from me before, Sam thought. His heart fell. Even his friends were distancing themselves from him! He swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening.
They felt a mixture of excitement and slight nervousness.
