Hem an Bekele is not your typical high school student.Rather than spending his free time playing video games or staring at his phone, this 14 year-old from Fairfax, Virginia was calling professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to make it affordable for everyone who needs it.His work won him the grand prize in this year’s 3M Young Scientist’s Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems.
Growing up in Ethiopia, Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to end up getting skin cancer.Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40,000.Those shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing experiments and working on different things, and that turned into his bar of soap as a project.
A lot of his research and development started in his family’s kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final of the competition, he realized that he did need to do a little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and structure his ideas during the finalist competition.Bekele said that he definitely couldn’t have done that all by himself.
Bekele’s award-winning soap is a compound based bar of soap and it’s charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂).It does have a strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin.It can activate the body’s immune cells to defend cancer.
Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said, “I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research, so this money will definitely help me achieve it.”
4.Why did Heman Bekele start working on creating the soap
A.Because he thought it was a fun project.
B.Because he wanted to win a science competition.
C.Because he found skin cancer treatment unaffordable.

5.What can we learn from Bekele’s preparations for the final
A.Well begun is half done. B.Learn humbly, ask willingly.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
6.What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about
A.What features the soap has. B.How the soap is used.
C.What chemicals the soap contains. D.How the soap is produced.
7.Which words can be used to describe Bekele according to the passage

If you’ve ever waded into the ocean for a swim and suddenly realized that the shore is getting farther away, not closer, you may have encountered a rip current (离岸流). Common at beaches worldwide, these powerful currents flow from the shore toward the sea at speeds up to several feet per second.
It’s important to know what rip currents are and how to look for them, because they are a leading cause of drownings in the surf zone near shore. Rip currents can form in several ways. One type of rip current, known as a channel rip current, forms when there are gaps between breaking waves. As waves break, they push water toward the beach and raise the level of the water slightly. If waves break on a sandbar (沙洲), but not in a deeper channel that cuts through the sandbar, the extra water that the waves have pushed toward the beacon escapes back to the ocean through the channel. The darker corridor of the escaping water acts like a conveyor belt, moving water, unsuspecting swimmers and small marine organisms offshore.
Another type, known as a transient or flash rip current, forms when surf is choppy The edges of breaking waves push on the water and make it spin, like a fast ice skater crashing into someone.
Think of a rip current as a swift river cutting through the surf away from the shore. Swimming against the current is going to tire you out and put you at risk of drowning. Instead, swim parallel to the beach—think of heading for the “river banks”—until you are out of the rip current’s pull. Once you’re no longer fighting it, you can swim back to shore.
Rip currents aren’t just a safety issue. Scientists are beginning to better understand the crucial ecological role they play in the ocean. Many marine organisms, including oysters, barnacles, fish and coral, rely on ocean currents to find suitable habitats. These organisms swim up or down or attach to floating or sinking material and are transported by multiple ocean processes. Rip currents are a key mechanism for carrying larvae (幼体) to deeper waters or recalculating them in shallow waters. The type and behavior of the rip current may affect the movement of marine organisms.
8.What can we learn about channel rip currents according to the text
A.They cause a bit huger waves than common currents.
B.They form around deeper channels in the ocean’s bottom.
C.They present visually as darker areas between breaking waves.
D.They are generated when two waves meet close to the shore.
9.What does the underlined word “transient” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Dangerous. B.Powerful. C.Slow-flowing. D.Short-lived.
10.What suggestion does the author give on escaping from a rip current
A.Swimming with the current.
B.Avoiding swimming against the current.
C.Swimming under the current.
D.Avoiding floating with the current.
11.Why are rip currents important to the ocean ecology
A.They redistribute small marine organisms.
B.They provide habitats for marine organisms.
C.They change the structure of marine ecosystems.
D.They bring nutrients from the ocean’s bottom to the surface.

A new international organization, ReShark, including partners from 15 countries and 44 aquariums, is challenging the shark statistics. According to National Geographic, ReShark’s goal is to release 500 endangered zebra sharks in Indonesian waters to increase a wild population that is on the edge of extinction. This is the first-ever attempt to reintroduce captive sharks into the wild.
Marine reintroductions present significant challenges due to the complexity and shortage of ocean life, as well as the difficulty in managing threats, according to National Geographic. Team ReShark understands that the reintroduction may go up in smoke. Unlike land animals that have been successfully reintroduced in the past, such as giant pandas in China, young sharks are more likely to suffer from diseases and be killed by other animals, and they struggle to find food on their own.
Sharks have a remarkable history as one of the oldest vertebrate species, surviving five mass extinctions over a period of 420 million years. They play an important role in marine ecosystems by influencing the ocean’s food chains. However, they are now facing the second-highest rate of disappearance. Research shows that more than 37 percent of the shark species are at risk of extinction due to overfishing, both legal and illegal. Sharks are hunted for their meat. Nearly 100 million sharks are killed by human hands each year, according to the organization Sentient Media.
Despite the alarming decline in shark populations globally, top shark scientists are hopeful that ReShark’s efforts will succeed. Given these challenges, Simon Fraser University ecologist Dulvy initially had some doubts about ReShark’s plans. However, after asking some questions, he was surprised by what the initiative could produce. “This initiative is different,” Dulvy explained. Similarly, Rima Jabado, Dulvy’s successor, recognized ReShark as a unique project that could provide a lifeline for endangered shark species. “It may provide an opportunity for species not to go extinct,” she said.
12.What’s the ReShark’s intention of releasing sharks
A.To conduct shark data collection.
B.To study the living habits of sharks.
C.To save the endangered shark species.
D.To test new ways of keeping sharks.
13.What does the underlined part “go up in smoke” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Disappear. B.Fail. C.Work. D.Influence.
14.How does the Paragraph 3 develop
A.By giving examples. B.By giving descriptions.
C.By making comparison. D.By making classifications.
15.What does Rima Jabado think of ReShark’s project
A.Special and promising. B.Hopeful and effortless.
C.Risky and costly. D.Doubtful and immature.

根据第二段第一句“Marine reintroductions present significant challenges due to the complexity and shortage of ocean life, as well as the difficulty in managing threats, according to National Geographic.”(据《国家地理》报道,由于海洋生物的复杂性和短缺,以及管理威胁的难度,海洋生物重新引入面临重大挑战。)及第三句“Unlike land animals that have been successfully reintroduced in the past, such as giant pandas in China, young sharks are more likely to suffer from diseases and be killed by other animals, and they struggle to find food on their own.”(与过去成功重新引入的陆地动物,如中国的大熊猫不同,年轻的鲨鱼更容易患上疾病,更容易被其他动物杀死,而且它们很难自己寻找食物。)
根据第三段“Sharks have a remarkable history as one of the oldest vertebrate species, surviving five mass extinctions over a period of 420 million years. They play an important role in marine ecosystems by influencing the ocean’s food chains. However, they are now facing the second-highest rate of disappearance. 【答案】
36.located 37.was built 38.parts 39.to flow 40.to 41.and 42.making 43.practical 44.where 45.significance
“(locate) in the Min River Valley, Sichuan Province, China.”
故填was built。
allow sb./sth. to do... 故填to flow。
distribute...to... 故填to。
分析句子可知,has been able to和is considered是并列谓语动词,用连词and连接。故填and。
“(make) the region one of the most fertile croplands in China.”
故填where。

10.What suggestion does the author give on escaping from a rip current
A.Swimming with the current.
B.Avoiding swimming against the current.

I was helping my mother in the kitchen when I heard a terrible noise struck from above. I rushed to the upper floor to check out. There was nothing but a wet footprint on the floor.
“What’s happening ” my mother asked.
“Nothing, just the sound of lightning.” I knew something strange had happened, but I ignored it as my mother was suffering a cardiac (心脏的) disease. “We’d better close the windows. Maybe rain will pour down,” I showed a relaxing expression but thought back about that footprint. It was so familiar, but I could not remember where I had seen it.
“David, can you help me take the cooking pot in the attic (阁楼) ” my mother requested. “Oh, please! I am afraid of the dark,” I answered.
My mother said that I was like my father. Oh, you want to know what happened to my father He was an engineer. Last month, he went to the oil platform in the middle of the sea at Jerteh, Terengganu. He said he went there for only 4 days. But 2 weeks had passed, and he still didn’t come back. My mother called the management office in Jerteh but was told they hadn’t seen him since they last saw him on his way to the seashore from the oil platform.
Speaking of my father, my mother looked sad. “Today was our Anniversary Day, but he was missing.”
But back to the main point. I investigated the footprint in my room. And when I looked up, the window was opened. I walked towards it and looked out. Nothing. I closed the window and lay down on my bed. “Ouch! What is this ” I asked myself.
There was a small box on my bed. I wondered what was inside it. I opened the brown box. There was a necklace, made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room
Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on.
