The next generation of scientists and inventors is already finding approaches to address society’s problems. A group of high school students and their instructor report a solution to the problem of lead (铅) pollution in drinking water — an inexpensive faucet (水龙头) attachment that removes this poisonous metal. Unlike conventional filters currently on the market, theirs includes a container made of eco-friendly plastic and indicates when it’s “used up” by turning the tap water yellow.
“A few years ago, I saw a video of a woman in Michigan turn on her tap water, and it came out brown.” says Rebecca Bushway, the project’s principal investigator. “That made me think — because there’s really no safe level of lead in drinking water, wouldn’t it be nice to have a water filter that could tell you your water is polluted, well before it turns brown because of lead ”
Bushway, as a science teacher, wondered aloud to her chemistry class if there was a little filter that they could make from inexpensive components to easily remove lead. The students were excited about the idea, and they started thinking about the project in 2020.
The students discussed designs for an attachment to screw (用螺丝固定) a filter onto a sink’s faucet. Then in the spring semester of 2021, they 3D printed the attachment and a 3-inch-tall filter housing, using eco-friendly plastic. They filled the containers with some chemical powder. Next, the students added a tiny spectrophotometer with a single-wavelength LED to the bottom of the filter container. They installed an indicator light that turns on as soon as the detector identifies the yellow color of the lead iodide (碘化铅).
The team’s goal is to make and sell their filters for less than $1 each. Because the housings use eco-friendly plastic, the cost could trend a little higher, but the material would help reduce the overall environmental impact of the filter.
The process of developing the filter has been very fulfilling. “Ultimately, this experience has shown students they can make a difference to somebody, and that there are problems they can fix with science,” said Bushway.
24. What shows that the filter is running out according to the text
A. The change of the water’s color. B. The change of the filter housing’s color.
C. The times of the filter being used. D. The flash of the indicator light.

A. Chemical powder reacts with the lead in the water.
B. A detector is fixed to identify the lead iodide.
C. The students have developed eco-friendly plastic.

27. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To advertise a product to remove lead to readers.
B. To highlight the hardships the inventors encounter.
C. To praise the young for shouldering responsibilities.
D. To stress the importance of environmental protection.

In an era dominated by texting and messaging apps, phone calls seem to become a relic (遗物) of the past among younger generations, Gen Z in particular. A recent survey shows that a quarter of 18 to 24-year-olds refuse to pick up the phone, and over half ignore calls from their parents. Why do we find phone calls so awkward, and is avoiding them damaging our relationships
The avoidance of phone calls isn’t just a preference; it’s a display of anxiety. Phone conversations can be awkward due to the lack of non-verbal clues. In face-to-face interactions, we rely heavily on gestures, facial expressions, and body language to interpret messages, which are absent in phone conversations. This can lead to misunderstandings and a feeling of disconnect. Additionally, the pressure to respond immediately without enough time to think, as afforded by messaging apps, can increase the anxiety associated with phone calls.
Despite the discomfort they may cause, phone conversations are an important skill. In the professional world, the ability to communicate effectively over the phone remains a critical skill. As I emphasize in my teachings and workshops, clear, confident, and real-life communication can significantly impact personal and professional success. Therefore, it’s crucial for younger generations, including Gen Z, to learn how to communicate well with others over the phone, not just for professional success but also for developing personal relationships.
Relying merely on messaging apps can have harmful effects on Gen Z’s well-being and relationships. The survey indicates a growing discomfort with direct voice communication can lead to a lack of deeper, empathetic (共情的) connections. This can potentially impact their ability to form meaningful relationships and deal with situations where direct communication like phone calls is momentous.
Moreover, as I advocate in my approach to public speaking, including emotional elements into communication enhances memorability (值得记忆) and impact. Phone conversations, with their immediate and personal nature, can develop a deeper emotional connection than text-based communication.
28. What can we know from paragraph 2
A. Why people are making fewer phone calls.
B. How young men respond to phone calls.
C. What impact can phone calls have.
D. How much further phone calls go.
29. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Future success is mainly based on phone talks.
B. It’s vital to acquire the art of phone conversation.
C. Learning how to communicate is the focus.
D. Much remains to be done for better personal skills.
30. What does the underlined word “momentous” mean in paragraph 4
A. Obvious. B. Important. C. Missing. D. Temporary.
31. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An interview. B. A book review. C. A lecture. D. A diary entry.
D
Individuals vary in how they react to anxiety. Some bury their heads in the sand and ignore the mounting sense of anxiety that seems to occupy the society. Others are in a watchful state and can’t get enough of the up-to-the-minute news and social media feeds.
Martin Buber once stated that we related to three things around us: nature, our fellow men, and how you view the world. When we are in a burdened (忧虑的) state, we tend to take no notice of any of these. When we become unburdened from our depressed selves, we are able to discover the delights and wonders around and experience a deep sense of gratitude.
At a time when news reports are merely a click away, people’s anxiety becomes even intenser. Because of 24/7 media, the international and the interpersonal have integrated in a way that we have never seen before. It seems that we’ve lost the capacity to maintain our inner peace — and that’s not just a matter of having opposing views about issues. It’s a matter of not having the patience to involve in delightful communication and to hear each other. Transforming the situation can’t be achieved overnight. It’s not accidental, which must be approached with strength. It comes from the efforts to attain understanding and calm.
Our age of anxiety presents us with challenges. But out of adversity comes opportunity. Never can we maintain calm and experience gratitude at a time when we are burdened, worried, and anxious. Like anything else, relaxation and calm take a bit of work. Attempt to limit your exposure to updates on the news and take a couple of moments to count your blessings — including the people in your life and the fortune from which you’ve benefited. As you may be aware, it is taking things for granted that robs you of the fruits of your labor. Praying for goodness and planting seeds of gratitude may be our only way out.
32. What might happen to a relaxed person
A. Spotting the beauty in the surroundings. B. Paying no attention to the state of mind.
C. Getting on well with nature and fellows. D. Grasping the latest news items with care.
33. What makes people anxiety-stricken
A. The lack of peaceful talks. B. The information overload.
C. The widespread false news. D. The opposing views online.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Methods to overcome challenges and barriers.
B. Steps to robbing people of their fruits of labor.
C. Tips on limiting the exposure to news updates.
D. Ways to ease anxiety and appreciate blessings.
35. Which might be a suitable title for the text
A. Take Nothing Online for Granted
B. Watch Out for the Traps of Media
C. Be Grateful in an Age of Anxiety
D. Count Blessings Instead of Worries

I’ve always thought of my mother Lee-Ann as a superhero. Not that she can fly or shoot lasers (激光) out of her eyes, but because she never runs out of room in her heart for anyone or anything.
I could write about all of the wonderful things she has done, but I want to focus on the one project she does every year that has shaped my whole family and everyone around us: She collects the money she finds in the washer and dryer, and she puts it in a little jar that we refer to as “The Charity Jar”. Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something — a cause, an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys coffee for the next people in line at a coffee shop. Other times, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. If you ask anyone else who knows her, however, they will tell you that she has a huge heart. She manages to get our whole family involved in this movement every year.
Last year, for example, my younger brother Bob and I volunteered in a shelter for the homeless. Once, when we helped with delivering daily supplies there, he noticed the wish list on the wall: comforters, a DVD player, a coffee maker and supplies. We told Mum, and she quickly organized a family meeting to discuss how to help the shelter. We all agreed that the coffee maker would be the best thing for our family to work on together. We found a coffee maker online and decided to buy one.
Bob opened “The Charity Jar” and we counted the money Mum collected. Unfortunately, it was 50 dollars short. “Any way to make it up ” Mum asked me and Bob.

serve as sth.
本句是not only ... but (also) ... 故填but。
故填first。
63. have been shown 考查动词的时态、语态和主谓一致。 故填have been shown。
be home to为固定表达,表示“是……的发源地,是……的所在地”。故填to。
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a Chinese exchange student in your school. I’m writing to suggest including Mandarin Chinese courses in our current curriculum, given that many students here show ongoing strong interest in it.
Known as one of the most spoken languages in the world and with its growing popularity worldwide, Mandarin Chinese, has entered numerous classrooms in foreign countries. Besides, due to the rise of China’s international influence, speaking Chinese fluently has become a highly valued professional skill. Furthermore, learning Chinese helps open a unique window into one of the world’s richest and most ancient civilizations.
I hope you can take my suggestion into serious consideration. Looking forward to your reply. Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
“I’ve learned that Mr. Smith needs someone to tidy his big garden,” I told Bob. “We can do it!” cried Bob. Eager to bridge the gap in our funds, we immediately ran to Mr. Smith’s house and asked whether we could do the gardening services in exchange for the amount of money we needed. Mr. Smith was delighted with our idea, so on the following weekend we worked hard to transform his garden into a lovely and tidy space. In this way, not only did we earn the funds we needed, but we also gained a grateful friend whose garden now bloomed with newfound beauty.
Paragraph 2:
The next weekend, we went to the shelter with the new coffee maker excitedly. We also brought some coffee beans so that we could demonstrate how to use the machine, as well as enjoy coffee when chatting. The women at the shelter were overjoyed with our contribution, and my mother’s eyes sparkled. I knew she was proud of us. As we left the shelter, it was raining and was a bit cold, but all of us felt warm in heart. Not only was Mum a superhero, but she also made us a superhero team, whose delight lied in every little help we could offer to others.
Text 1
M: Good morning, is that Golden Seaside Restaurant, please
W: Yes, speaking. How may I help you, please
M: I’m calling to ask if there’s a table for four available for tonight.
Text 2
W: Henry, will you go to Mrs. Brown’s office to talk about our project tomorrow
M: No. She isn’t available the whole day tomorrow.
W: So should I change your schedule for tomorrow
M: Yes, please.
Text 3
M: Is it a good time to visit your city at this time of year
W: I don’t think so. If you go now, I’m afraid you’ll be kept indoors most of the time. The sky hardly clears up from March to May there.
Text 4
M: Shirley, what do you usually do at the weekend
W: Every weekend, instead of hanging out with my friends, I pass out food and safety supplies to nearly 800 homeless people with volunteers’ help.
M: Wow, you’re really doing something great!
Text 5
W: Tom, what do you love doing most after school
M: Playing basketball.
W: Why
M: I love meeting other kids and being active. Also, I love competing. It’s awesome when my team works great together to win a game worth winning.
Text 6
W: I can’t believe that we’re actually on our first road trip. California, here we come!
M: I hope we’ve made the right decision to go there.
W: I’m sure we have. It’s our best option. It’s much closer to Utah than Texas. It’ll be too tiring if we drive all the way to Texas from our state. Besides, there’s really a lot to see and do in California.
M: I think you’re right. According to the map, we’re only an hour from our first stop.
W: That’s great! But what about stopping for a breather at the next roadhouse I want a rest.
M: OK.
Text 7
W: Mike, let me buy you something for your birthday.
M: That’s great! Can I ask for anything that I want
W: Sorry, Mike, but I’m not made of money. You can choose something that doesn’t cost over 100 dollars.
M: Thanks. I’ll buy something that I’ve been hoping to get for a while. I need a basketball, but my father has already promised to get me one. I need a new cellphone, but it costs hundreds of dollars. Can I get earphones
W: Certainly. You can choose a pair on this site. Sit down and have a look.
M: Oh, I love this pair. But it’s 9 dollars more than I can ask for.
W: It’s OK. You can get it if you really love it.
M: Thanks, Auntie. You’re the greatest!
Text 8
W: Andrew, it’s already 4:30 pm now. You’ve been reading the book for half an hour without even looking up. You must be reading an interesting storybook.
M: Actually I’m reading a poetry book titled A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart.
W: Who wrote it
M: It’s written by Zetta Elliott and illustrated by Noa Denmon.
W: So what is it mainly about
M: It’s mainly about one boy’s days and experiences. It is an amazing exploration of the boy’s feelings throughout a period of time, from joy to anger to pride. The poems tell about children in various situations. This book has moved me so deeply.
W: I don’t think we have such a book. Did you borrow it from your school library
M: No. I helped walk Mrs. Johnson’s dog yesterday. She wanted to give me some money, but I didn’t accept it, so she gave me the book instead.
W: Well, since the book is so great, will you recommend it to your classmates
M: Absolutely. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I cannot wait to bring it to school so my classmates will read it, too.
Text 9
W: What are you reading, Jason
M: I’m reading a news story about a music producer. He has the habit of adopting unique pets.
W: What pet did he adopt most recently
M: A dog named Toby. A shelter (收容所) picked him up while he was walking alone on the street. People at the shelter tried to find him a home, but it proved a near impossible task because he was a two-nosed dog. Toby was at risk of being put down.
W: How did the music producer get to know him
M: He read the ad about the dog. He couldn’t wait to take the dog home. Now Toby has joined Rocky, a five-legged Miniature Pinscher, and Pinky, a two-legged Chihuahua.
W: So does Toby live a normal life
M: Yes. He can play and fetch like any other dog, but thanks to his two noses, he can find anything no matter how well it is hidden.
W: I’m so happy for him.
M: Me, too.
Text 10
M: Until recently, Shade Ajayi had never gone to school. Now 50, the businesswoman is learning to read and write alongside students nearly 40 years younger than she is. Ajayi attends a school in Ilorin, in Nigeria’s western Kwara state. She wears the same uniform, or school clothing, as hundreds of girls at the school: a pink dress and head covering. As a child, Ajayi worked in her aunt’s shop instead of attending school. She now runs her own business making and selling purses and bags. But she believes her inability to read or write is holding her back. Ajayi signed up to attend school last year, but the school closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Schools reopened in January, 2021 and Ajayi finally got her chance. She sits in a class with students aged 11 to 13 and raises her hand to answer questions. Nasrat Busari, who teaches her, said she did not appear worried about the age difference with other students. Ajayi still makes bags and purses after finishing classes. A helper serves her customers during school hours. She plans to continue her education for four more years, saying it will help her business.
