Young boys often dream of superpower to solve their problems “If I could just lick my fingers, my homework would be done,” many have imagined. Jerry and Joe put their ideas down on paper and created the world’s most popular superhero, Superman.
In 1931, the two became fast friends at Cleveland’s Glenville High School and ended up crating comics together. Joe was the artist and drew all the time, using bits of any kind of paper he could find. He hung out at newsstands (报摊) concentrating on magazines, especially amazing stories and then took up a pencil to recreate them at home. Jerry was the storyteller and the more ambitious of the two. He described how the creation of Superman came to him in the middle of a sleepless summer night, “I spring out of bed and write this down, and then I go back and think some more for about two hours and get up again and write that down. The inspiration for Superman’s origin story start taking shape, and the next morning, I run over to Joe’s place ...”
As is often the case, when we experience something painful in life, we deal with the feel-ing through creative expression. Jerry’s father owned a shop and died during a robbery. A young child might process that experience by wishing something could have prevented it. For Jerry, out came the Man of Steel, who was invulnerable (刀枪不入的) and tended to protect innocent people. Creating storylines must have helped Jerry to deal with the pain. Superman always wins. He stops trains and bad guys and cannot be killed.
The story of Superman has inspired kids for generations. It has calmed their fears and driven their dreams. Most importantly, the Man of Steel has inspired us all to find our super-power and use it to help others.
24. What can we learn about Jerry and Joe
A. They became popular superheroes. B. They used their imagination in comics.
C. They lived in their own imaginary world. D. They stood out for their rich experience.

26. Which can best describe Superman
A. Ambitious. B. Mean. C. Unconquerable. D. Troublesome.
27. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A biography. B. A movie review. C. A science fiction. D. A history textbook.
C
Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.
Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.
The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.
When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.
Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.
28. What kind of food do energy bars belong to
A. Fairly health-friendly foods. B. Especially beneficial foods.
C. Relatively high-cost foods. D. Highly processed foods.
29. What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4
A. It does harm to people potentially. B. It can often result in death.
C. It makes people get less calories. D. It makes little difference to people’s health.
30. What is more likely to make people feel full
A. Fiber added to packaged foods.
B. Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C. Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D. Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Different Kinds of Processed Foods

D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods

Whales are threatened by a variety of human activities off the West Coast of the United States, including fishing, ship traffic, and pollution. They have bad effects on whale populations, but are rarely addressed by current whale-protection policies in California, according to a study from the University of California, Davis.
The study, published for open access this week in the journal Marine Policy, examines the main causes of death for nine whale species in the California Current Ecosystem, which stretches from British Columbia, Canada to Baja California, Mexico. The whales considered in the study include gray, blue, fin, minke, North Pacific right, and killer whales.
“We find that it is people that deem fishing causes whale death,” said co-leading author Eliza Oldach. “But a number of human activities have made the modern ocean a really tough environment for whales to survive. We’re excited about efforts that look broadly to rebuild healthy oceans.”
The report found that main contributors to whale death are currently, targeted with relevant policy responses: noise, water quality and marine (海洋) rubbish. But three other threats-nutritional stress, disease and predation (捕食) -need to also be considered to provide a more whole approach toward managing whale deaths.
“Gray whales migrate (迁徙) over 5,000 miles between their breeding grounds at either end of the California Current,” said co-leading author Helen Killeen. “Throughout their journey, they must pass through a large number of human activities, fighting with changes to their environment caused by climate change.”
The study comes as the California Ocean Protection Council (COPC) aims to develop a plan for achieving zero death for whales in the California Current Ecosystem this year. Achieving such a goal requires understanding the key drivers of whale deaths and opportunities for policy change, the report said.
32. Which activity will lead to whales’ death
A. Going fishing with your friends in a river. B. Playing with your friends beside the sea.
C. Going sailing with your family on weekends. D. Throwing rubbish in the sea as you are playing.
33. What’s meaning of the underlined word “deem” in Paragraph 3
A. Catch. B. Complain. C. Think. D. Describe.
34. What can we learn from Helen’s words
A. Gray whales are fond of travelling. B. Gray whales’ migration is full of danger.
C. Human being is the only killer of whales. D. Whales’ death is mainly caused by climate.
35. What should COPC do prevent whales’ death
A. Get rid of the present policy. B. Plant more trees along the sea.
C. Know what actually leads to it. D. Find a right place for them to live.

We ate a big breakfast at a local restaurant, like we did every Father’s Day. The present my daughter gave me was a T-shirt with the words “World’s Coolest Dad”. I put it on, feeling that was what made Father’s Day so great.
Just then my volunteer fire-department pager (呼机) went off: “Attention, Pocahontas-Old Ripley firefighters! House fire on Simpson Street. Repeat. House fire on Simpson Street.”
“Gotta go,” I said. I ran to my car and took off. I got to the firehouse in minutes. Another firefighter, Tom Smith, and the chief were waiting. “Don, Tommy, take truck 253. Roll!” he ordered. “The rest of the guys will be right behind you.” As the first on the scene, our job was to make sure everyone was out of the house, locate the nearest hydrant (消防栓), and then wait for backup.
A small crowd had gathered in front of number 907 when we got there. They watched the fire in panic. Thick black smoke could be seen pouring from the one-story house’s open front door. A large man burst through the door, red eyes streaming with tears. “Please hurry!” he called. “My boy’s still in there. I couldn’t get to him!”
There was no time to wait for backup. I left Tommy outside and rushed into the house.
“Anyone here ” I shouted. No answer. I searched every inch of the first two rooms. No child. The fire had grown so fierce by then. It seemed that the roof would collapse at any time. All at once a vision was put into my head—that father begging us to save his child. I mustn’t give up. Not today, I thought. There still might be a chance.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Suddenly I heard a weak cry from the next room.

【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块)are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.(苏打水、包装饼干、方便面和鸡块都是高度加工食品。但也包括一些看起来健康的产品,如早餐麦片、能量棒和某些种类的酸奶。)”可知,能量棒虽然看上去好像是健康的,但也属于被高度加工过的食品。故选D。

The report found that main contributors to whale death are currently, targeted with relevant policy responses: noise, water quality and marine (海洋的) rubbish.

C. Going sailing with your family on weekends. D. Throwing rubbish in the sea as you are playing.
33. What’s meaning of the underlined word “deem” in Paragraph 3

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文
Suddenly I heard a weak cry from the next room. Immediately I rushed there and found the boy lying on the floor in just about the only spot that wasn’t on fire. Without any delay, I just grabbed him and rushed out. A great cheer went up from the crowd as I carried the boy to safety. The boy’s father, with tears in his eyes, thanked me again and again. The boy was soon taken to hospital and it looked like he would be fine.
It was a special Father’s Day not only for me, but also for the boy, his father and my daughter. On that special day, I did what a father is supposed to do for a child. For this child, he was rescued from the jaws of death by a father whom he didn’t know. And for his own father, just as one of the neighbors said, I gave another dad the greatest gift anyone ever could. And in my daughter’s eyes, I became a hero, because I showed her that day what a “world’s Coolest Dad” was really like.
