It was hard to say goodbye to a pet, especially for children. Nancy Lowe. 5, from Walton-on Thames, England, experienced the loss of her beloved cat, Tintin, earlier this year. She died from heart failure and Nancy had been struggling to adjust to life without her best friend. Concerned and anxious, Nancy’s mom, Tamara, said, “Nancy and Tintin were best friends, and they had a really close bond, Whenever they saw each other, the two of them were so happy.”
Nancy desperately missed Tintin and she was worried the cat would be lonely, so she decided to write a letter to her cat up in heaven. She was warned by her mother, who told her that heaven might be too far away and that Tintin might have found a new friend, but Nancy insisted on writing the letter. When she was asked what she had written, she showed the letter to her mother generously. It read, “Dear Tintin, I miss you. Have you found a new friend in heaven ” Tamara was touched by her daughter’s sincere love and kindness. She didn’t want to disappoint her daughter so they posted the letter together.
Before they put the letter in a post box, once again Tamara tried to let her know she probably wouldn’t receive a reply, but Nancy addressed the envelope to “heaven” and mail edit off anyway.
Tamara said, “When we sent the letter I didn’t expect anything to comeback and I don’t think Nancy did, either. But it was important for her to say a proper goodbye. Getting a response was the last thing we expected.” Tamara and Nancy didn’t know a postman named Clive Edwards was on duty that day and he saw the letter addressed to heaven and wanted to help Nancy find some comfort in her loss.

【答案】
To their surprise, they received a letter from “Tintin” just a week later! Of course, it wasn’t true Tintin who had written back. Clive wrote the letter as if he were Tintin. It read, “Dear Nancy, thank you for sending me your letter. I’m OK in heaven and being looked after well by the angels. I know you are sad that I’m not there with you but please don’t be...” Nancy finished reading the comforting words, tears welling up in her eyes. Seeing the happy smile back on her daughter’s face, Tamara felt a huge burden lifted from her shoulders.
Tamara shared the story on the Internet hoping to find the sender. The heartwarming story soon went viral online, and thanks to the efforts of those sharing her post, she got in touch with Clive. Tamara conveyed sincere thanks to him for that valuable letter. “Nancy really needed one final goodbye. When she learned that Tintin was OK without her being there to look after her, she started to get over the loss,” Tamara said. Relieved and delighted,
the kind-hearted postman Clive responded that he just did what anyone else would have done.

My best friend, Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment complex in a lovely small town. Cocoa is a ten-year-old poodle(卷毛狗) and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as senior citizens.
Years ago, I promised myself that when I retired I would get a chocolate poodle to share my golden years.
From the very beginning, Cocoa has always been exceptionally well-behaved. I never have to tell him anything more than once. He is extremely neat—when taking toys from his box to play, he always puts them back when he is finished. I have been accused of being obsessively neat, and sometimes I wonder if he mimics me or if he was born that way, too.
He is a wonderful companion. When I throw a ball for him, he picks it up in his mouth and gives it back to me. He does many amusing things that make me laugh, and when that happens, he is so delighted that he just keeps it up. I enjoy his company very much.
But almost two years ago, Cocoa did something that challenged comprehension. Was it a miracle or a coincidence It is certainly a mystery.
One afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him when he started pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest. He had never done anything like this before, and I told him, “No.” Usually, one “no” is sufficient, but not that day. He stopped briefly, then suddenly ran toward me from the other side of the room, throwing his entire weight—eighteen pounds—at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I yelled in pain. It hurt more than I thought it would have.
Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿瘤). I went to the doctors, and after X-rays, tests and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.

When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself.

Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
When cancer starts, a wall of calcium(钙) builds to which the lump or cancer attaches itself. This is known as calcification. It is believed that calcium acts as a protective barrier that isolates the cancerous cells from the surrounding tissues. Cocoa’s strange behavior that day, pawing and sniffing at the right side of my chest, could have been a response to the changes happening in my body. Animals, especially dogs, have an incredible sense of smell and can detect subtle changes in our body odors. It is possible that Cocoa could sense the presence of the cancerous cells even before any physical symptoms or pain appeared.
Was Cocoa just aware of what he was doing I believe so. Cocoa’s actions that day were extraordinary. He not only detected the presence of cancer but also tried to draw my attention to it by pawing and crashing into me. His behavior was a clear gesture of concern and protection. Cocoa’s intervention ultimately led to my early detection and treatment, and this incident made me reflect on the unique bond that humans share with their pets. And I will forever be grateful for having such a caring and perceptive companion by my side.

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else. Whenever we had time, we’d sit together and talk about dogs. “You’re so silly, Jake,” Josie would say. “Bulldogs (斗牛犬) are scary.” “Hah. Golden retrievers (金毛猎犬) are scary,” I’d say. We had this ongoing argument about what our ideal dog would be. But it made no difference—any dog would do, as long as it had a tail to wag and a friendly face.
One summer night, as we sat together beside the window, Josie saw something. “What’s that ” she said, pointing to a dark shadow on our driveway. The moon was up and everything looked either black or milky. At first all I saw was darkness. Then the shadow moved and I heard the sound of metal. Then the shadow flowed out onto the silvery driveway. With a little fright, we found ourselves stepping down to the front door. There in our yard stood a dog—a big, black dog with long, shaggy (蓬松的) hair.
Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. “Here, boy!” I said. And the dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, and then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. When close enough, it had a doggy smell that always made me think of dirt and grass and piles of leaves. “Don’t say ‘Here, boy’,” said Josie. “She’s a female.” Pulling back and looking, I said, “I wonder what her name is.” I felt for her collar while she sat patiently. I found no tags, but just a chain with a small old bell on it.
“I bet she’s hungry,” said Josie. “I can feel her ribs.” I ran my hand through her fur. The dog was so skinny that you could feel every bone, and her coat was twisted and full of dirt. If she belonged to someone, they weren’t taking good care of her.

【答案】
“What can we give her ” Josie asked me. “Milk! I’ll get her some milk.” I went into the kitchen to fill one plate with milk and some raw eggs. The dog ate everything up, but instantly she finished, she ran into the shadows. “Don’t go!” Josie called loudly. But the dog was gone. “She’ll be back when hungry again,” I said. “Nobody is feeding her.” The following evening, as soon as we set the plate down, she appeared as if from nowhere. We named her ‘Shadow’ and gave her food again, but this time for some reason she wouldn’t eat it.
The dog did something completely unexpected. She grabbed the plate in her mouth and dragged it away into the bushes. When running there, we couldn’t find her. This went on for several days. However, one night, Shadow didn’t come. Josie and I tried to figure out what had happened. Another two days passed but we got no answer. We couldn’t wait to comb through the bushes until we found something unexpected. At our feet lay a litter of four puppies, squeaking and climbing around on top of each other. Our plates were there, and so was Shadow, cold and motionless. She must have saved all her food for her puppies.

Tom is a special child. Ever since he was little, dogs have been his greatest passion. He often growled (低吼) and barked and sometimes moved around the house on all fours. His parents brought in a little brown female dog named Lynn. Tom was on cloud nine. One day, this little boy, together with Lynn, was sitting quietly down by the side of the street when suddenly a giant dog walked across him. He was a little surprised and started screaming as loudly as he could! All of this frightened Lynn away immediately.
Tom’s parents tried to see what the chances were of Lynn coming home on her own. But five days later, there was still no sign of Lynn. The boy didn’t just have tears streaming down his cheeks — his parents were saddened too.
The woods behind their home stretched for over 50 miles! Together with their neighbors, they searched for over a month. But Lynn was gone. Tom’s parents wanted to choose a new puppy for him. But no dog could replace Lynn for him.
Tom was not the same boy. He locked himself in his room. He seemed to have lost his love for dogs. He could not focus his attention on his classes so he didn’t want to go to school. He would easily get angry with people
around him. Tom changed from a happy, smiling boy to an upset and annoying kid.
Tom’s parents wanted him to stay home and he had been studying at home ever since. His parents accompanied him almost every day, but staying home didn’t help much. The boy’s mother worried a lot. One rainy afternoon, she saw him staring out the window. “I miss Lynn so much. I wonder if everything is okay with her ” It had been a long time since his beloved dog ran away, but Tom’s despair was as great as the day it happened. Days later, Tom walked out the front door with his head down and sat by the side of the street.

【答案】
A huge brown dog crossed the street and stood in front of the crying boy. The animal barked twice and watched Tom, tongue rolling out. It was only after a few minutes that he looked at it more closely. The four-legged giant’s glassy eyes reminded him of hugging by the fireplace and running between the sprinklers in the backyard. He knew the dog very well. It was Lynn!!! Tom ran to his friend and wrapped his arms tightly around her neck.
Lynn licked his cheeks and then walked to the edge of the woods. Tom ran after Lynn and entered the woods. He lost sight of her for a moment, but luckily soon heard his friend barking. And he finally saw it… Lynn grew up to be an adult dog and became a mother! She had three fluffy, sweet little puppies. Tom took Lynn and her
puppies home and his parents were very happy to adopt the little dogs. Tom took good care of Lynn and her puppies. He shared his story, showing his appreciation of tiny animals. Tom made a full recovery. He happily returned to school. His classmates visit him almost every day. Of course, they want to see not only Tom, but also Lynn and her puppies.

In a small community located at a suburb of Exeter, a disheartening issue had been troubling the neighborhood for years. The once pleasant surroundings were ruined by piles of waste that seemed to multiply with each passing day. Residents were growing tired of the worsening environment, leading many to abandon their homes in search of
cleaner neighborhoods. It was in this terrible situation that two young students, Emma and Mia, decided to take matters into their own hands.
Emma and Mia were classmates and best friends from Phillips Exeter Academy, both passionate about environmental preservation and deeply concerned about the pollution crisis their community was facing. Witnessing more and more neighbors’ leaving, they knew they couldn’t stand by any longer. Determined to bring about a change, they undertook a mission that would soon catch the attention of the entire community.
Their journey began with thorough research and planning. The two girls searched carefully on the Internet for information on environmental initiatives and connected with local environmentalists. They organized meetings with residents to understand the issues at hand, collecting data on the types of waste, the sources, and the areas most affected. Armed with this knowledge, Emma and Mia worked out a comprehensive plan and announced it to ask for opinions from the residents. Surprisingly it was strongly supported.
Their strategy was twofold. First, they initiated a waste classification and recycling program. They distributed recycling bins(回收箱) to every household and educated the community about the importance of responsible waste management. Soon, the streets began to show signs of improvement as the volume of garbage inappropriately thrown away decreased gradually.
The second part of their plan was more ambitious. Emma and Mia gathered volunteers from their school and the neighborhood to take part in a massive clean-up campaign. Armed with gloves and trash(垃圾)bags, they began systematically clearing the waste from the streets, parks, and even the local bodies of water. Their firm commitment and hard work inspired others to join the cause.

【答案】
Half a year later, the changes were significant. Gradually, the neighborhood regained its charm. The air grew cleaner, many kinds of birds were increasingly making their nests here again and the sound of laughter returned as children played in the park once littered with waste. Emma and Mia’s great efforts had not only cleaned up the environment but also promoted the community spirit. News of the remarkable transformation quickly spread beyond the community. Those who had left the community in earlier years began to return.
Emma and Mia received recognition and honors for their work. The local community was full of praise for their efforts and gave them gift packs in appreciation of what they had done. Besides, awards from environmental organizations and praise from government officials poured in. But they knew that their work was far from finished. They would use their newfound prominence to advocate for sustainable practices, hosting workshops and seminars on environmental protection, inspire the community to continue their eco-friendly efforts and encourage local businesses to adopt green initiatives to make their neighborhood more enjoyable.

Jenny always admired powerful and attractive marathon runners and dreamed that one day she could also run a marathon.
To make it, one day, she began to seriously prepare. At first, she only set the small goal of running one kilometer each morning. However, she still found it tiring and soon gave up running. As days went on, her weight gradually increased. Upset about her health, she finally decided to lose weight by doing exercise. She began running again.
As usual, in the following days, her big problem with exercising was always how to stay motivated. She tried to find guidance from running experts and books. And everything she read indicated that she’d better pair up with a running partner. She followed the advice, but human exercise companions always let her down. Her last exercise companion quit with excuses like, “It’s my turn to do the dishes” at six o’clock in the morning! She hated to admit it, but she had made similar excuses to others and disappointed them in similar ways.
Then Brucie appeared in Jenny’s life, a birthday gift from her husband, John. John couldn’t work out with Jenny because he had a bad back. So that job was left to Brucie, a yellow dog. Brucie was quite energetic, which made him destined(注定的) to be a running partner.
In the beginning, Brucie and Jenny ran only fifty paces at a time, each set mixed with one hundred paces of walking. “I don’t look foolish starting this way,” thought Jenny, “because Brucie’s bones are too young to make
him run much harder.” She was right, and Brucie’s early limitations gave her time to start slowly without feeling awkward.
After about nine months, though, Brucie was old enough to run several miles a day and Jenny was fit enough to keep up. From spring to autumn, they logged the miles together every day. However, as winter approached and the weather got colder, maintaining a daily running routine required lots of dedication and determination. And Jenny started to think the dog would be like her previous human partners and that she couldn’t count on the little dog for help with motivation.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千)and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours,” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

【答案】
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. He could feel nothing but his hands shaking and heart pounding. “You will be great, Peter,” Isabel encouraged him. Just then, Peter heard his name being announced. It was time to present! Peter took a deep breath and then went on the stage. “Tubman Park needs a new kind of trash can,” Peter explained, pointing to a poster of a trash can. Then Peter explained the working principle of the trash can in detail. The judges nodded as they listened, seeming interested in the project.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Go Green had agreed to buy new trash cans for the park! Hearing the inspiring news, they both leaped into the air with joy. Peter barely had time to savor the moment before Isabel started sharing the news with Mrs. Evans and showing their gratitude to her. Learning the result, Mrs. Evans smiled through misty eyes. “I know you can do it! Tubman Park is sure to become one that is clean and green again!” Never before had Peter and Isabel been so proud of themselves.

Spotted lanternflies (斑点灯笼蝇) are an invasive species. Since 2014, they have been seen all across the eastern United States. The insects are harmful to many plants, and can disturb entire ecosystems. State officials have urged people to kill spotted lanternflies wherever they see them.
When Joy saw the pests in her school courtyard, she thought she had to do something. “I’ve always wanted to take environmental action,” she says, “and show people that no one is ever too small to make a difference.”
So she started a club called Squash (压扁). Its mission is to kill spotted lanternflies around the school. More than 20 students have joined. At first, they trapped the pests in empty water bottles and then squashed them. In a single day, the club managed to kill more than a hundred spotted lanternflies.
Joy wanted to do more. With research, she discovered a plant called milkweed. It’s nutritious for pollinators (传粉昆虫) such as monarch butterflies but poisonous to spotted lanternflies. Joy thought that using milkweed along with the traps made specifically for spotted lanternflies would be a better way to kill them. The issue was that they didn’t have enough money to buy milkweed and the traps.
The kids were hoping to raise money for their school to address the big problem. Their goal was to raise $200, the cost of the equipment needed to kill spotted lanternflies around their school. They got part of the way there, with about $75. They decided to attract more fundraisers. “We discovered that if you find your voice,” Joy says, “you can do much more.”
In May, Joy and other students from Squash gathered in Columbus Park, in New York City. They set up a table with lemonade, cookies, and origami figures for sale. The money will be used to buy milkweed and the traps.

【答案】
To attract more attention, the students divided their work into various roles. Joy took charge of organizing the lemonade stand. She wore a T-shirt with the club's logo and approached passers-by with enthusiasm. Meanwhile, other Squash members were in charge of creating eye-catching posters and signs about the spotted lantern fly invasion. They strategically placed these materials around the park to educate people about the environmental threat and the importance of supporting their cause. The team also offered educational games and quizzes, encouraging participants to learn more about the impact of invasive species on local ecosystems.
As the day progressed, the students' efforts paid off. Gradually, more and more park-goers came up to their table, eager to support the cause. Their lemonade and cookies quickly sold out in no time. What's more, donations poured in, surpassing their initial goal of $200. Joy and her fellow students were overwhelmed by the support and generosity from the strangers. They felt a sense of accomplishment, realizing that their small action had sparked a ripple effect. The funds raised would enable them to purchase milkweed and the traps, expanding their efforts to protect not only their school courtyard but also other vulnerable areas in the city.

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else. Whenever we had time, we’d sit together and talk about
dogs.

He would easily get angry with people around him.

In a small community located at a suburb of Exeter, a disheartening issue had been troubling the neighborhood for years. The once pleasant surroundings were ruined by piles of waste that seemed to multiply with each passing day. Residents were growing tired of the worsening environment, leading many to abandon their homes in search of cleaner neighborhoods.

She tried
to find guidance from running experts and books.
“I don’t look foolish starting this way,” thought Jenny, “because Brucie’s bones are too young to make him run much harder.” She was right, and Brucie’s early limitations gave her time to start slowly without feeling awkward.
