I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey
piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of
my schedule, and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot
chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the
details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears
comprising a wonderful world distinct from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest
Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through
the reference books related to my academic fields for better grades. After I started graduate school,
extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research
papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So
I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for
the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results
including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.

What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical
fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well
as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build
sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the
diversity of issues in the scientific field and could serve it, heart and soul.
24. What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety
A. He drowned it in chocolate. B. He conducted an experiment.
C. He slept on the sofa leisurely. D. He escaped into a fantasy world.
25. What does the author mean by the underlined part in paragraph 2
A. Reading a good book was time well spent.
B. He was too busy to take good care of his books.
C. Reading novels was a waste of time for him then.
D. The Harry Potter book wasn’t as good as expected.
26. How did the New Year’s resolution benefit the author
A. More sympathy went out to him.
B. His moral values were strengthened.
C. He learned much about religious diversity.
D. He gained new insight into his academic fields.
27. What’s the best title of the text
A. Reading: A Lifelong Hobby B. The Power of Research Papers
C. Novels: Love at Second Sight D. The Benefits of History Reading

17-year-old Tibetan girl Cigla is a freshman at Nagqu No. 2 Senior High School in Lhasa, which sit
3,650 meters above sea level. She now plays point guard for the school’s 12-member female basketball
team.
“Practice makes perfect. You get used to the altitude(海拔 ) when you love the sport and train hard
enough,” said the potential basketball star, who has been crazy about the sport since taking it up three years
ago.
With outstanding speed and skillful passes, she never fails to shine on the basketball court, even when
she competes against the boys. Though she is a freshman in high school, Cigla already has a clear picture of
her future--entering a sports college to study basketball. In the eyes of Cila, who comes from a poor
herder’s (牧民的 ) family in northern Tibet, studying in Lhasa, the most developed city in this area, has
made it much easier for her to realize her basketball dream.
With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters. Nagqu is among the most uninhabitable places in Tibet.
Low-oxygen environments and extreme weather have long influenced the health of Nagqu students,
hampering the development of primary education in the area.
Like Cigla, many students at the school are from poor farmers’ and herders’ families. Dawa Droma, a
senior student also on the school’s female basketball team, recalled, “I had never touched a basketball
before that game but joined the class team anyway. When I scored and heard my classmates cheer for me, I
couldn’t feel more proud. That’s how I fell in love with basketball and why I never looked back.”
Reflecting on the influence of basketball on her life, Dawa Droma said the sport had helped her get fit and
build up confidence over the years. “Meeting players from different schools has certainly made me a more

outgoing person,” she said.
28. What do we know about Cigla from the text
A. She loves playing basketball but dislikes training hard.
B. She is in Grade One at a senior high school at a high altitude.
C. She’s got used to the altitude because she has lived there for years.
D. She’s been crazy about playing basketball since she was 12 years old.
29. In Cigla’s opinion, what can help her realize her basketball dream
A. Her school’s location. B. Her clear plans.
C. Her family background. D. Her entering a sports college.
30. What does the underlined word “hampering” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. promoting. B. maintaining. C. interpreting. D. preventing.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Dawa Droma barely feels proud when scoring.
B. Dawa Droma has been affected by basketball greatly.
C. Playing basketball improves Dawa Droma’s sense of touch.
D. Players from different schools have become Dawa Droma’s friends.

In 2009, when Qatar( 卡 塔 尔 ) bid to host the 2022 Football World Cup, it promised a
carbon-neutral( 碳 中 和 ) event. Even back then, the prospect of neutralizing the carbon-dioxide
emissions(排放 ) generated by hosting hundreds of thousands of fans in newly constructed stadiums, in a
desert state, seemed fanciful. So it is proving. In their greenhouse-gas accounting report, published last year,
FIFA(国际足联) and the Qatari organizers estimated that the World Cup would generate 3.6 million tons of
CO2 emissions. Estimating emissions for big sporting events is a relatively new practice and methods can
vary, but that figure is higher than any recent World Cup or Olympics.
It is also likely to be a significant underestimate. A report in May 2022 by Carbon Market Watch
(CMW), a climate watchdog(监督者), found that the official forecast failed to account accurately for the
emissions generated from stadiums. FIFA, which insists its method is “best in practice”, reckons that the
majority of the emissions (52%) will come from fans and players travelling to Qatar, while less than 25%
are from stadium construction. That is because organizers expect these stadiums to be used for years after
the World Cup, spreading their carbon footprint way into the future.
CMW believes such an excuse is far from reasonable. Before the World Cup, Qataris were able to get
by with only one stadium, it points out. Consequently, it estimates that the emissions from stadium
construction for the World Cup are undercounted by a factor of eight. It puts the real figure at 5 million tons.
Though it amounts to less than 0.02% of the world’s annual emissions, sports teams and organizations
should have set a positive example in this.
To remove the doubt from outside, Qatar has established the Global Carbon Council (GCC), a
dedicated environmental agency. Beyond adjusting for World Cup emissions, the GCC will promote a path
to “a low-carbon future”, a great step for a country with the world’s highest emissions per person. Yet the
agency is still at its early stage. Only six projects, saving less than 600,000 tons, have been approved so far.
32. What is the main problem Qatar and FIFA are faced with at present
A. The 2022 World Cup isn’t as successful as it should be.
B. They may fail to keep the promise to hold a green event.
第 5 页 共 9 页
C. The figure they published is higher than that of other events
D. They are unfamiliar with the new practice of the World Cup.
33. How does Qatar and FIFA cut down the carbon footprint of the World Cup
A. By insisting on its way of environmental protection.
B. By promising to use the new stadiums for more years.
C. By blaming the greenhouse-gas emissions on travelers.
D. By cooperating with Carbon Market Watch for instructions.
34. Why does the CMW refuse to accept the explanation given by Qatar and FIFA
A. 5 million tons accounts for a little of the annual emissions.
B. The stadium construction for the World Cup sets a bad example.
C. The method they employed in estimating the emissions is unscientific.
D. There will be more stadiums than Qatar actually needs after the World Cup.
35. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. The GCC is an agency specially established for the World Cup
B. The Qataris attach great importance to environmental protection.
C. The Qataris need to make more efforts to hold a carbon-neutral event.
D. The GCC has achieved a lot in cutting down greenhouse-gas emissions.

Tips for online learning
Online learning has the same basic elements as face-to-face learning. The major difference is that
instruction is delivered online. Many of the strategies for effective face-to-face learning also apply to online
learning. 36 Here are some strategies we recommend:
Create space to learn. Invest some time to understand your needs and preferences as a learner, and
what an effective study environment looks like for you. For example, you might need a quiet place to study,
or you might need to listen to classical music. Consider what equipment you might need. Wherever you
study, try to minimize distractions. 37
Manage your time effectively. Spend some time getting familiar with your online courses,
understanding what is expected of you, mapping out key deadlines, and planning study time. 38
Research shows that learners gain more information if they spread their study over multiple days or
sessions. Make sure your routine works with your other commitments so you’re more likely to stick to it.
39 Just as with face-to-face learning, mental energy matters: take time to reflect on whether you
have understood the materials, try to remember and sort the information you have learned to aid memory,
test your understanding, mix different concepts and skills into the same study session to build connections
and fluency, ask questions, participate in class discussions, and try teaching concepts to others.
Ask for assistance! In an online learning environment, you may need to ask lots of questions and take
ownership over shaping the learning experience so that it meets your needs. 40
Finally, if you’re facing specific challenges such as illness, mental health, accessibility, balancing
childcare responsibilities, etc., it’s important for you to reach out to your instructors or the relevant student
support services for discussion and creative problem-solving.

Jennifer, a 39-year-old single mother, began the day by sending her child, Hill, to school. Having no
idea what would happen, Jennifer was filled with anxiety. After all, it was the first day of a new school year
for Hill, a fresh start! On the way to school, she repeatedly reminded Hill to solve problems positively and
fit in. Though worried, Jennifer had to wave goodbye to her daughter, watching her towards the school
gate.
The whole day was packed with housework. Jennifer tidied the house, washed clothes, and prepared
for the evening meal. As the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Jennifer picked Hill up from
school. On seeing Jennifer, Hill couldn’t wait to hug her, sharing the school experiences.Chatting and
laughing accompanied them all the way. Hill's innocent laughter was like Jennifer's ray of sunshine.
Approaching home, they encountered Mrs. Smith, a most kind and thoughtful housewife living in their
neighborhood for many years. Mrs. Smith often invited Jennifer and Hill to her home and shared her
homemade desserts and cookies. The two families developed a close relationship and Hill liked to stay with
Mrs. Smith, who always brightened her days with willingness and timely help. After exchanging greetings,
they went back to their own homes.
On arriving home, Jennifer set out to prepare dinner. As the sun began to set, the house was full of a
pleasant smell of cooking food. Jennifer and Hill sat at the kitchen table when Jennifer suddenly had a chest
pain. She was sitting in a chair, looking up at the ceiling and experiencing abnormal breathing. She then fell
out of the chair onto her left side, her hands balled into fists, and her body was shaking violently. Her eyes
were open, and Hill kept calling “Mommy, Mommy”, but she fainted and could not respond.
