It was Jennifer Williams’s mother who made her interested in books lifelong. As a librarian (图书管理员), she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to preschool” Williams told , a local news site. “Until we went to college.”
When Williams, now 54, became a teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to develop reading habits.
“It’s very easy for teachers of young children to find out which kids read and who do not,” she said. “It’s clear at the end of the first day of school.” To Williams, the way to solve the problem was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of a civil (市政的) event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
“Anybody could do that,” she said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to go with my faith (信仰), my work rules, my everything.”
In order to realize her dream, she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bedrooms if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.”
So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started leaving boxes of books at her front door. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools—free of charge—and also gave away books to little free libraries around her city of 41000 just over the North Carolina border (边界). She also hosts a book club for people in the local jail (监狱).
In the four years, she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78, 000 books—only 922, 000 more to reach her goal. And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few choices.
“Reading can take you anywhere,” she told a reporter. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read,
you can learn almost anything.”

Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).
In one video, for example, Boris shared how he had learned the Chinese word dongxi. He translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced one theory (说法) about how dongxi came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say qu mai dongxi. you’d be saying, “I’m going to buy things.”
Some other videos show his reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional costume, which are quite welcome among his 40, 000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Boris said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture
and the country.”
Like many foreigners, Boris once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship (奖学金) to study in China in 2019, his view changed. “China has entered a new period, but many people’s impressions of China are still stuck in the1970s,” Boris said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Boris has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example.
“I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Boris said. “But to touch readers, I need to use proper feelings while reading.” So he needed to look for much background information and make his feelings suit each part of the poem.
Though shooting these vlogs takes lots of time, the young man feels proud that his vlogs have inspired many people. Boris said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. “This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no efforts to do my part.”

How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park In my community, there’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course(高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea.
First, a park is meant to be for the whole community(社区). Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn’t fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.
Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设施)will have to be moved or knocked down. It’s a waste of time and money, it’s also a waste of good equipment. The swings, for example, will probably just end up as litter.
Third, what about giving young people something to do Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won’t have anywhere to go and they won’t have anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park
Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining(维护)it costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course What about those people who can’t afford to join a golf club That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.
41.Some people want to change the park into a ________.
A.golf club B.golf course C.parking place D.skating place
42.According to Paragraph 4, having nowhere to go will make some children ________.
A.go to get some exercise B.fall in love with golf
C.play video games at home D.go to the street and make friends
43.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage
A.To help carry out further plans. B.To make the park more beautiful.
C.To encourage children to go skating. D.To stop the golf course from being built.
44.How many reasons does the writer give to show his idea
A.1 B.2 C.3 D.4
45.Which of the following shows the structure(s) of the passage
A. B. C. D.
