Lesson 5
“Old”Friends Touring the World
班级: 姓名: 小组号:
Texan 81-year-old good friends Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip toured the world in 80 days, providing that adventure doesn’t have an age limit.
Their first stop was a location that challenges even many experienced travelers:the Antarctic. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the waters between the southern trip of South America and the Antarctic’s South Shetland Islands.“For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling, slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage and we were holding on for dear life,” Hamby said. The voyage, however, faded from their mind as they set foot on the ground of the Antarctic, fascinated by the breathtaking beauty of penguins, icebergs and glaciers.
Since that the first adventure, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents. They rode camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, danced in Nepal and observed the Northern Lights in Finland. And despite the challenges international travel presented, the good friends said they finished their trip without any argument. Though they’re both independent and stubborn, they respected each other’s feelings. And what they remember the most are the people that they met.“We just have friends now all over the world that we love dearly”, Hamby said.
The two shared a crucial piece of advice for travelers worrying about the language barrier on their own adventure. “You know, people often ask us about it”, said Hamby. “We tell them there’s one universal language, and that’s the smile. We found it worked wonders because we were often aware that English was not always spoken and that that could cover all languages.”
They also encouraged other older people not to let age hold them back. Aside from some minor changes in plans-like deciding not to ride a motorbike in Bali because of concerns about falling-their age didn’t affect their itinerary(旅程) abroad. They said they felt confident that if they were injured during their trip, their children would have been at peace knowing that they were doing what they absolutely wanted. And Hazelip described 81 as the perfect age to embark on a trip. “Getting older does give us a little bit of wisdom of making decisions”, she said.

Lesson 4
A Tribute to Maternal Devotion:
Exploring Motherhood in Chinese Culture
班级: 姓名: 小组号:
The idea of a mother’s selfless love is a repeated theme in Chinese literature, especially the ancient poems. One of the most famous one is written by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, whose representative work, “Song of the Parting Son”, is still a must on the curriculum for Chinese teenagers.
Meanwhile, there are many stories and fables of great mothers throughout the Chinese history. For instance, nearly every Chinese child has heard about Mencius’mother who moved homes three times in order to provide the best living conditions and education for her son,who grew up to become a great Chinese philosopher known by the Chinese as the “second sage”, coming after Confucius.
In recent years, there have been occasional debates over whether or not China should have its own version of Mother’s Day. Some argue that the second day of the fourth lunar month of a year, which is marked as the birthday of Mencius’ mother should be designated as the Chinese Mother’s Day.
However, there are different voices as well. Many say it is too narrow-minded as limited to reject such an exported festival like Mother’s Day. “Respect and love for parents can have various forms and ways of expression, which is far more profound than what a festival could express,” argued by opponents. It is the love that matters, not the festival itself.
