Some Christmas traditions are pretty standard in mainstream(主流)American culture: put up the tree string up the lights, visit grandma, and so on.
Then there’s the one my Colombian family does every year: the Novena de Aguinaldos. We pray(祈祷)for nine days without a stop, and this Novena counts down the nine days before Christmas. Most Americans have never heard of it, but in Colombia, it’s a big deal.
Like all good traditions, especially around the holidays, this tradition is about community and getting together with friends and family. My family immigrated(移民)from Colombia when I was just two months old. Every year, we gather with a group of Colombian friends for as many of the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos——Spanish Christmas carols(颂歌)come.
I’ve lived my whole life in the US. There’s not a lot of Colombian culture that we still hang onto. Why do we still carry on with the tradition of celebrating the Novenas, then
When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere—not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Novenas were nothing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Colombia, the Novenas became the heart of our community.
But our Novenas are starting to feel a little more breakable. It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.
4. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The process of celebrating the Novena.
B. The development of a Colombian tradition.
C. The background of the Colombian family.
D. The differences between the Novena and Christmas.
5. Why does the Colombian family celebrate the Novena
A. To remember their dead friends. B. To find a sense of belonging.
C. To show their respect for Americans. D. To understand the local culture.
6. What makes celebrating the Novena difficult for the Colombian family
A. Lack of money. B. Their separate busy life.
C. American laws. D. Friends’ complaints.
7. What’s the best title for the text
A. Growing Up B. Colorful Culture
C. Exploring American Christmas Traditions D. Colombian Family’s Novena in the US

Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ on sticky summer days Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many choices managing to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those eager to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely creative approach. They designed a special textile(纺织物) that can absorb body heat and re-emit(重发出) its energy into space. This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known as radiative cooling, Science Magazine reveals. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular shirt, you are actually wearing a device that works like a mirror.
Up until now, the available solutions to heat through clothes were limited to suggestions on wearing light colors since these don’t absorb sunlight like dark colors do, and choosing breathable cloth like cotton and linen. But even when these tips can actually help you chill, they are simply not enough in the hottest seasons, and in places with extreme temperatures.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming are now looking out for textile manufacturers(制造商) and clothing brands that are interested in using their cloth. They estimate that the new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. “We can make it with mass production, which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old ones,” Yaoguang said.
8. What is the purpose of the new invention
A. To warm up people’s body.
B. To cool people off in hot weather.
C. To measure the wearers’ temperature.
D. To protect clothes from becoming wet.
9. How does the special product work
A. By sending out absorbed heat.
B. By turning sunlight into energy.
C. By keeping heat out completely.
D. By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
10. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Relax. B. Heat. C. Cool. D. Freeze.
11. What can we learn about the new T-shirt according to the passage
A. It needs to be tested further.
B. It had been designed by a clothing brand.
C. It has been produced by a textile manufacturer.
D. It won’t cost much more money than a regular one.
D
We all have an idea about the common types of environmental problems. However, light pollution may be a new term to many of us. But, the fact is that it does affect mankind, other living forms and the environment as a whole.
What is light pollution It presents all forms of misused man-made light. The obvious cause of light pollution is the use of outdoor lighting products improperly. It can be office lighting, car headlights, station lights, streetlights and many more.
Light pollution is harmful to both animals and plants. Upon studies, it is found that obvious effects are observed in the behaviour of animals that are active at night. Needless to mention, bright light at night makes it difficult for these animals to hunt, wander and perform their regular activities. Light pollution is directly or indirectly responsible for causing several diseases. Its effects are related to disturbance in the physical rhythm (节奏). It contributes to risks of developing cancerous cells. So, it’s nothing less than a threat to human health.
You have already seen the negative effects of light pollution on animals and human health. Apart from this, the actual cost of misused light is about millions of dollars every year. It also leads to the release of greenhouse gases and global warming. After all, coal or gas is used for producing electricity.
While outdoor lighting and using man-made lighting products are part of our modern lifestyle, some simple ways will surely help in reducing light pollution. For example, while installing (安装) outdoor lighting, make sure that they are pointed downwards. Also, use only the required lighting equipment for both home and offices. Believe it or not, many people living in the urban areas cannot view clear sky and stars at night. Let’s contribute our part in reducing the pollution.
12. What can we learn about light pollution
A. It has little effect on plants.
B. It contributes to most cancers.
C. It is a negative fruit of light technology.
D. It affects animals’ behavior during the day.
13. Why does light pollution affect the climate
A. It increases the temperature at night.
B. It creates clouds in parts of the Earth.
C. It stops the release of greenhouse gases.
D. It is related to the burning of coal and gas.
14. How can we contribute our part in reducing light pollution
A. Forbid the use of outdoor lighting.
B. Use clean energy to produce electricity.
C. Avoid unnecessary lights at home and offices.
D. Reduce money spent on light in urban areas.
15 What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Citizens should be banned to install outdoor lighting.
B. Only simple ways can help reduce light pollution.
C. There is no clear sky or stars over the urban areas.
D. Light pollution needs to be dealt with urgently.

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Some Christmas traditions are pretty standard in mainstream(主流)American culture: put up the tree, string up the lights, visit grandma, and so on.
Colombian Family’s Novena in the US
A 5. B 6. B 7. D

根据第四段“There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos——Spanish Christmas carols(颂歌)come.”(九日敬礼有三个部分。 故选A项。
根据第六段“When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere—not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did.”( 前几天我问我的父母,答案是移民不属于任何地方——不属于你在哪里,也不属于你从哪里来。
根据最后一段“It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.”( 每年大家聚在一起越来越难了。

A Relax. B. Heat. C. Cool. D. Freeze.
11. What can we learn about the new T-shirt according to the passage
A. It needs to be tested further.
B. It had been designed by a clothing brand.
C. It has been produced by a textile manufacturer.
D. It won’t cost much more money than a regular one.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据第一段中的“While there are many choices managing to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those eager to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.(虽然有很多选择可以让身体保持温暖,但这项令人惊叹的发明旨在为那些渴望在极端炎热的日子里在户外感到舒适和新鲜的人提供真正的解脱。)”
根据第二段中的“They designed a special textile(纺织物) that can absorb body heat and re-emit(重发出) its energy into space.(他们设计了一种特殊的纺织品,可以吸收身体热量并将其能量重新释放到太空中。)” 故选A。
画线词所在句中的“these tips”指代的是前面的内容,根据前面的“Up until now, the available solutions to heat through clothes were limited to suggestions on wearing light colors since these don’t absorb sunlight like dark colors do, and choosing breathable cloth like cotton and linen.(到目前为止,通过衣服来解决热量的可用方法仅限于建议穿浅色衣服,因为浅色衣服不像深色衣服那样吸收阳光,和选择棉和亚麻等透气布。)”
根据最后一段中的“They estimate that the new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent.(他们估计,这种新材料只会使服装制造成本增加10%。)”

15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Citizens should be banned to install outdoor lighting.
B. Only simple ways can help reduce light pollution.
C. There is no clear sky or stars over the urban areas.
D. Light pollution needs to be dealt with urgently.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect.
