Edward O. Wilson, known as “ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination(着迷)with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his Ph. D. from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson’s early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: how ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later, in 1990, Wilson and German biologist Bert Holldobler published their Pulitzer-winning The Ants. It detailed the insects’ social structure that was both valued by scholars and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson’s major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Biogeography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson’s most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic roots of animal behavior and argued that genes shaped human behavior.
Wilson faced accusations(谴责)for these ideas but his work finally largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas on the role biology plays in human culture peaked in On Human Nature, which won him a Pulitzer in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. These accomplishments offered him a type of superstar status, but friends and colleagues say the polite Southerner remained down to earth. “Professor Wilson really listened and engaged with whomever he was interacting with,” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson’s final advisees.
4. What contributed to Wilson’s passion for ants
A. His accidental disability. B. The discovery he made about ants.
C. The school education he received. D. His boyhood time spent in nature.
5. What is Wilson’s first Pulitzer-winning book about
A. The social structure of ants.
B. The distribution of different species.
C. The links between biology and human culture.
D. The role of chemical signals in communication.
6. According to the last paragraph, which word best describes Wilson
A. Productive. B. Modest.
C. Open-minded. D. Independent.
7. What is the best title of this text
A. The Pioneering “Ant Man”
B. Discoveries in Evolutionary Biology
C. A Leading Figure in Popular Science
D. The Adventure of a Pulitzer Prize Winner
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

The work explored the genetic roots of animal behavior and argued that genes shaped human behavior(许多人认为威尔逊对进化生物学最重要的贡献来自于他1975年出版的《社会生物学:新的综合》。该著作探讨了动物行为的遗传根源,并指出基因塑造了人类行为)”以及最后一段“Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. These accomplishments offered him a type of superstar status, but friends and colleagues say the polite Southerner remained down to earth.(威尔逊发表了超过400篇科学论文和20本书。
C
Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts (手工艺品) we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage, but conflicts, climate change, globalization and tourism are all exacting a heavy price. Technology is now the most essential weapon in the battle. Here’s how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.
As you can imagine, creating the replicas (复制品) via crowd sourced 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms (算法) are being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods.
Virtual reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are extremely fragile. Human interaction with these locations is doing a great deal of harm. Wastes accumulate everywhere, causing enormous problems. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We’ll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at (and touch!) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.
8. What does the underlined word “exacting” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Paying. B. Cutting. C. Receiving. D. Demanding.
9 What is the advantage of AI in preserving cultural heritage
A. It generates 2D images. B. It makes restoration easier.
C. It makes preservation safer. D. It creates replicas in seconds.
10. How does VR help to preserve cultural heritage
A. By recycling huge amounts of waste. B. By reducing human impact on the site.
C. By forbidding visitors from touching artifacts. D. By educating people about the sites’ importance.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards technology application in preserving the cultural heritage
A. Ignoring. B. Compromising. C. Approving. D. Disagreeing.
A 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage(但今天,文化受到前所未有的攻击。时间的破坏不仅威胁着我们的文化遗产)”可知,后文应该讲的是冲突、气候变化、全球化和旅游业都在要求付出沉重的代价。可以猜测exacting为“要求付出”。故选A项。
根据第二段“AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods. (人工智能还将使现有文化遗产恢复和保护变得更加容易,并且大大优于以前的方法)”可知,人工智能使现有文化遗产的恢复变得更容易。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“ As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at (and touch!) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes. (随着越来越多的文化遗址和文物被数字地图和记录,虚拟现实技术将越来越成为人们体验它们的方式。我们最终都将能够在不同的地方穿行,观看(和触摸!)手工艺品和艺术品却不用真正看到它们)”可知,VR技术可以模拟出这些文化遗产让我们感受而不用去现场,从而减少人类对文化遗址的影响以及破坏。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.(最后,我们的文化遗产将通过技术来保护。在研究、创新、数据共享和项目工作方面的努力将有助于促进和保护世界各国的文化遗产)”可推知,作者对科技在保护文化遗产方面的应用持支持态度。故选C。
D
I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here Lettuce or hope
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a cup, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
12. Why did the author soak the stub in water
A. To decorate the nice cup. B. To hope that it would grow.
C To make a video in person. D. To remove kitchen rubbish.
13. What can we infer from paragraph two
A. This lettuce showed no sign of recovery.
B. This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C. Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup.
D. The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves.
14. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed.
15. What can we learn from Monty
A. Never being afraid to restart yourself. B. Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C. Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D. Giving freedom to the heart in a way.
B 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据第一段“I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window. 【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. (在一个下雪的早晨,我注意到了第一个迹象。第一片小叶子从它的芯里伸出来。希望的小绿旗。被打败了,但没有被打败。这莴苣没有放弃生存!几天之内,我就无法看到我切除叶子的伤口了)”可知,这棵莴苣没有放弃生长,真的长出了小叶子,很快就迅速覆盖住原先的伤口。由此可知,这棵莴苣还在挣扎求生。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. (如果我是一棵处于类似状况的莴苣,我会先怀疑地评估一下自己的状况,然后再开始全面生长)”可知,如果作者处于莴苣的状况之下,他会犹豫不决,在评估好环境后才努力生长。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave. (我和他有同样的选择:要么放弃,要么重新开始。重新开始的前景令人沮丧。但是我的莴苣朋友Monty在前面带路。我只希望能像他一样勇敢)”可知,作者认识到自己应该像莴苣朋友Monty一样勇敢,不畏惧重新开始可能遇到的令人沮丧的状况。由此可知,我们应该向Monty学习永远不要害怕重新开始。故选A项。

It is a great honour for me to share my ideas about attending the school’s fantastic speech contest themed “Tang Poetry and Song Ci in My Eyes” last week.
Generally speaking, all the participants were passionate. But there is also room for improvement. First, most participants didn’t quite understand the real meaning of what they were delivering. Besides, many Chinese characters were wrongly pronounced, which made the lines sound a little bit funny.

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
“Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend ” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday !
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. Having learned about the details, Tom volunteered to clean the floor. It took him more than two hours to clean every corner in the house. For the first time, Tom realized how hard it had been for his mother and sister to keep the house clean. While Tom was working, Jane washed the dirty clothes and decorated the room with colorful balloons. When the cake arrived, everything was ready for the big moment.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Seeing the beautifully decorated room and the big cake on the table, their mother seemed to be very confused and surprised. After Tom and Jane told her what had happened, she could hardly hide her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” said their mother, who then took out her smartphone and made a video. “We should share this surprise with your father!”

B. The distribution of different species.
C. The links between biology and human culture.
D. The role of chemical signals in communication.

A. Productive. B. Modest.
C. Open-minded. D. Independent.

C. To make a video in person.

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
