The Making of a Believer
It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl, who is chubby and cute, fond of sitting in her one-and-only spot near the nearth (壁炉). AS I got ready, I could hear icy rain pouring down. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.
That summer, my sweet cat had disappeared from my parents’ house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D.C. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.
My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family’s resident “realistic”, which mean the spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her” he said. I rolled my eyes. Dad always supported me, but he was so skepticat. He could do with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see her Baby-Girl again. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after T returned to D.C. without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
How, home again for the holidays, I was de tem mined to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then persuaded Dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she’d been found.
“Sharon, you have to be realistic,” my dad said as we headed to the garage. “She’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find her.”
“Well, I just have a feeling,” I said
Dad raised an eyebrow a she climbed into the driver’s seat to take me to the shelter.

Shortly after, my shocked Dad drove us back home.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
We were led to the room where the abandoned cat lived. I tiptoed into the room with a strong feeling of anticipation. Out of nowhere, I heard a familiar meow, which absorbed my prompt attention suddenly. My eyes zeroed in on a little cat caged in the corner. She was skinnier than I remember, but it was my Baby-Girl all right! Overwhelmed with extreme excitement and delight, I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close, with my eye swelling up tears, as my Dad looked on, with his jaw dropping wide with shock.
Soon after, my shocked Dad drove us back home. The instant we dropped Baby-Girl off, freeing her from the carrier, she immediately dashed to the hearth, seeking her favourite spot. On seeing this scene, we all roared with laughter, signaling that my Dad’s doubts were removed as well. Against all odds, my cat was home again, right before Christmas. It was such a miracle that my heart was filled with gratitude, feeling blessed with Baby-Girl’s long-awaited companion. As for my dear father who always support me, it turned out that Baby-Girl’s return made him a man of a believer.

My political career in the Student Union(SU)began by throwing frisbees (飞盘) on the campus lawn. I would throw a frisbee to someone I didn’t know and they would throw it to someone they didn’t know. Before long, we had built a community of people who met every day at lunch to throw frisbees.
Besides frisbees, the group decided to climb the mountain near our campus. When we reached the peak, it felt like we were at summer camp. We laughed, danced and told jokes. It was totally fun. While playing like little children in the cool mountain air, we all decided to do it again the following week. Our motto (座右铭) was “Bring a Friend” . We started out with a small group of hikers. But as the word spread, the number of participants increased. We made it a rule to climb the mountain every weekend. All of us were passionate about the fantastic experience, which we were looking forward to.
One day on campus, I decided to throw my frisbee to some strangers, run over and invite them to climb the mountain. Much to my surprise, a girl sitting in a wheelchair got hold of it. Her name was Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t. Holding the wheelchair tightly, she hung down her head in awkward silence. Then she told me that she had suffered from lung disease when she was young and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day. So, it was impossible for her to move without help. Fortunately, things got better.
With continuous efforts and treatment, she managed to live on her own with the assistance of the wheelchair: I told her that my friends and I would carry her if she were up for it. On hearing what I said, she refused without hesitation, adding that it would be a bother to carry her. But I tried my best to persuade her to come along with us by talking about the interesting experiences.

Having thought for a while, Grace still refused my offer. Looking at her depressed and embarrassed expression, I didn’t want to quit persuading her. I showed her some pictures that were taken during our trip. She smiled, with her eyes sparkling with excitement. Ultimately, I made it. On that appointed day, I, together with several friends, offered continuous assistance to her. With our joint efforts, we made it to the top of the mountain and admired the fantastic scenery. A sense of excitement took hold of her, with tears rolling down her cheeks like broken pearls. She was so grateful to us and we became close friends.
On the downhill path, Grace asked me why not run for the SU election. However, I didn’t have enough courage to run for it. Knowing I was in a dilemma, Grace had a sincere communication with me. “So kind and friendly are you that you helped me to enjoy the beautiful scenery and plan the weekend activity carefully. I am firmly convinced that you are capable of the work in the SU,” she said in a gentle voice. Inspired by her encouragement, I made a resolution to have a try. Having made full preparations, I was chosen chairman of the SU, which was beyond my expectations. Indeed, it is the mutual trust and help between friends that do make a great difference to us.

Kevin woke to the blaring beep of his alarm clock. “Can’t wait for that camping trip,” Kevin thought, filled with excitement. As he was leaving home, his dad grabbed him by the hand and said, “Before you go, just tell me the directions on where you and your friends are going to stay.”
“But dad!” Kevin complained.
“No buts!” Kevin’s dad added.
“Fine.” Kevin told him the directions and left.
The three friends, Kevin, Jay and Nathan, had been planning this adventure for weeks, packing their stuff-tents, snacks, and a map-preparing for a 3-day outdoor exploration. Excitement ran through Kevin as they departed for their campsite. “This trip is going to be awesome, ” Nathan excitedly yelled as they set off. But little did they know that nature had a surprise in store for them.
The first day at the campsite was going great, setting up tents, collecting firewood, and sharing stories. “Man, we nailed these tents, ” Kevin said. “I know it was easy really,” Nathan replied. The friends were happy.
Yet towards night, as the dark clouds gathered overhead, the atmosphere shifted, and a sudden storm erupted with unforgiving anger. Rain poured down from the heavens like a relentless waterfall, transforming the peaceful campsite into a muddy battleground. Worse still, a huge tree was uprooted and crashed down with a deafening crack on their only means of escape - their car. Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage beneath the fallen giant. “Our car!” he screamed over the howling wind, his voice a mix of disbelief and despair. “We’re stuck here,” he declared, his words barely audible against the backdrop of thunder and raindrops. They realized that their plans had been violently spoiled by forces beyond their control. The once quiet campsite now stood as a deserted battlefield, the fallen tree serving as a painful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the world around them.

Paragraph 2: On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next day, they found themselves facing the immediate problem of finding water. The search for water soon drained their energy. They were about to give up when they heard a small sound, a splash of some sort. They ran as fast as they could and found a small stream-a lifeline in all the challenges. However, with time passing by, more challenges emerged -limited food, frightful night filled with wilderness sounds, and the uncertainty of survival in the wild. Their nerves were near the edge of breaking down after long hours of uncertainty in the wilderness.
On the third night, a distant engine sound broke the terrible stillness. Relief washed over the weary faces as they witnessed the approach of a rugged vehicle. Kevin’s dad stepped out to meet the group. The emotions that played across their faces-disbelief, gratitude, and overwhelming joy- mirrored the shared trouble that had forged a deep bond among them. Back home, Kevin’s dad said, “Good thing you told me those directions,” teaching them the importance of informing someone about plans. The experience turned into tales of courage and resilience, embedded in their memories as lessons for a lifetime.

Kevin’s eyes widened in horror as he spotted the damaged wreckage
beneath the fallen giant.
