When the leaves begin to change their colors and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change. On September 7 comes White Dew(白露), the 15th solar term(节气) of the year. It indicates the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass at night.
For writers and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, there’s mist(薄雾) and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner.
American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast (《流动的盛宴》), “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. ”
But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colorful leaves and cooler nights. French writer Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring, “when every leaf is a flower.” This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, To Autumn by John Keats. In that poem, Keats says that autumn has its own songs, just like spring.
Another theme of this season is wisdom. The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature(成熟的).
The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats used this idea in his poem The Wild Swans at Coole(《库尔的野天鹅》), writing about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age.

A project in Britain is trying to deal with the loneliness of the old by asking young people to work as volunteers to help the old.
Lorna Burnett was paired with 15-year-old Ailsa, a schoolgirl, through the Reading Friends project. Lorna used to read two to three books every week when she was a librarian. In her 40s, she developed a serious eye disease and her vision became worse and worse. Finally, she was unable to read or watch television for any length of time without her eyes hurting.
Not only have Lorna’s reading periods with Ailsa helped to reconnect her with her love for literature, they have also built a strong inter-generational friendship. “I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,” Lorna said.
Since the Reading Agency started the program in 2017, they have introduced tens of Reading Friends periods across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.
According to the organization's website, “Loneliness is an important health and well-being problem for older people. Research shows that reading together can help older people to build social networks and connect with others. Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions(认知能力) and well-being and can reduce the risk of dementia (痴呆).”
Ruth Sheppard from Bannock bum High School is responsible for connecting schoolchildren like Ailsa with the program and she says that it has had an amazing influence on the young people. “We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,” Sheppard said. “It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.”

I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain’s literary heritage(文学遗产). Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels not only because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories and interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean. Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiance ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.
9. Why are some novels called “classic”
A. They stand the test of time. B. They are taught at universities.
C. They are written by famous authors. D. They are translated into many languages.
10. Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To introduce the university lessons. B. To remind people of the poverty in London.
C. To let people know about what family life was like.D. To prove classic novels help people know the past.
11. What can we know about the character Miss Havisham
A. She is selfish and mean. B. She lives an unhappy life.
C. She loves wedding dresses most. D. She becomes rich with others’ support.
12. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Why I like classic novels B. Why some novels are classic
C. How to read classic novels D. How to teach classic novels

根据文章第一段中的“On September 7 comes White Dew(白露), the 15th solar term(节气) of the year. It indicates the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night.(9月7日是白露,这是一年中的第15个节气。它预示着凉爽秋天的开始。随着气温下降,晚上的草地和树上经常会看到露珠。)”可知,白露是气温开始下降的时候。故选D项。
2. 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. (你在秋天自会感伤。每年当树叶从树上掉下来,它们的枝条裸露在寒风和寒冷的阳光下时,你的某些部分也随之死去。)”可推断,提到海明威的《流动的盛宴》是为了呈现秋天的悲伤部分,故选C项。
3. 短语猜测题。根据划线词后文“he’s reminded that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age(他想起,即使我们变老了,我们的心永远保持不变的年龄。)” 故选A项。

根据文章第三段内容“‘I chose a book and she would come along and read it to me,’ Lorna said.(“我选一本书,她会过来读给我听,”Lorna说。)” 故选A项。

Fact also shows that reading has a good influence on cognitive functions and wellbeing and can reduce the risk of dementia.(孤独对老年人来说是一个重要的健康和幸福问题。
根据文章末尾段Sheppard的话“‘We have wonderful young people at our school and we want to get them into the community,’ Sheppard said. (Sheppard说:“我们学校有很多优秀的年轻人,我们想让他们融入社区。”)”可知,她提出想让更多的优秀年轻人融入社区,并在后文“It has been fantastic to see them become more confident as well as improving their reading ability and social skills. They are meeting community members like Lorna that they are making friendships with, and all the library workers also help them.(看到他们变得更加自信,阅读能力和社交技巧也有所提高,真是太棒了。他们会见了像Lorna这样的社区成员,并与他们建立了友谊,所有的图书馆工作人员也会帮助他们。)”讲到了该项目带给年轻人的好处,从而进一步暗示了希望更多的人加入这个项目。因此,通过她的话可推测,这个项目需要更多像Ailsa这样的年轻人的加入。故选B项。
