It was a perfect summer morning on the beach in Rio De Janeiro. A man set up his umbrellas and chair near the water and was ready to read his book. Just then, when he looked toward the sea, he noticed a small shape that came out of the water. It slowly made its way out onto the sand and began to flap its wings. It was obviously feeble and tired.
When the creature was just a few feet away, the man couldn't believe his eyes. A penguin Penguins don't belong to Rio. The mans was amazed. He looked around to see if there was anyone else this strange sight.
A jogger soon appeared, followed by another. They stopped and stared. It was clear that the penguin was having trouble breathing. The first jogger looked at the sea and said, “Poor fellow, so far away form home.”
The penguin fell to its side. It had swum 2, 000 miles, trying to find the tiny fish that penguins like to eat. Why did the penguin need to travel so far Perhaps it was confused by moving ocean currents and temperatures—common effects of global warming. The penguin needed help. It would not survive on the hot sand.
One of the joggers phone for help, and soon some firemen arrived. The man was relieved that the penguin would soon be safe, although he felt a little sad, too.
The event on the beach at Rio happened some time ago. It was only the beginning of penguin migration to Brazil. Since that time, hundreds of penguins have appeared on the coasts of Brazil. They come all the way from Patagonia and the Straits of Magellan, southern parts of South America. They land on the sands very tired and starving, and many of them die. Some are shipped or flown back to colder waters farther south.
Perhaps the experience of the penguins will help us better understand the serious effect of human activity on climate change and on the condition of our planet.

Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none — that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas (画布) — the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed — All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙) and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance (自由职业的) drawing, was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand — he is also an excellent cook and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto (座右铭) is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.
8. What do we know about Denevan
A. He used to be a cook.
B. He has a gift for creating sand art.
C. He puts his work on show regularly.
D. He showed artistic talents at a very young age.
9. What can we learn from the text
A. Denevan walks a lot to complete his work.
B. It is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand.
C. It takes a long time for the storm to destroy Denevan’s work.
D. Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools.
10. What does Denevan enjoy about his work according to the text
A. Walking a long distance. B. Waiting for the storm to come.
C. Looking for a suitable canvas. D. Watching nature destroy his work.
11. Which of the following can best describe Denevan
A. Generous. B. Open-minded.
C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.
D
Contrary to the long-held belief that plants in the natural world are always in competition, new research has found that in severe environments adult plants help smaller ones and grow well as a result.
The research, led by Dr Rocio, studied adult and seedling (幼苗)plants in the ecological desert in the south-east of Spain. Dr Rocio said, “If you're a seedling in a poor land — the top of a mountain or a sand hill, for example-and you’re lucky enough to end up underneath a big plant, your chances of survival are certainly better than if you landed somewhere on your own. What we have found, which was surprising, is an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling; it also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large size growing on their own.”
Other benefits of nurse-seedling partnerships include that more variety of plants growing together can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, vegetation areas with nurse plants with more flowers might be able to attract higher numbers of pollinators(传粉者)in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil life and even provide a greater range of different fruit types for birds and other animals.
“The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity(生物多样性),” Dr Rocio said. “The more biodiverse an area, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, mammals and birds, and the better the chances of long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems. ” This system is win-win for adult and seedling plants in unfavorable environments.
The research is of value to those who manage and protect plants in tough environments. Most home gardeners and farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for plant growth, but the findings might be of value to those who garden in bare places.
12. What is a common understanding of plants
A. They can help each other. B. They can survive ill conditions.
C. They compete with each other. D. They grow well on their own.
13. What will happen to seedling plants if they grow under adult plants
A They will produce more flowers. B. They will die owing to competition.
C. They will make adult plants larger. D. They will get support from adult plants.
14. What is the effect of the nurse-seedling partnership
A. It leads to unfavorable environments.
B. It produces long-term healthy chances.
C It attracts higher and larger pollinators.
D. It provides a more variety of plant types.
15. Who will benefit from the new research
A. People studying organic farming.
B. People protecting plants on sand hills.
C. People wanting to change biodiversity.
D. People keeping more animals on the farm.

第二节(满分20分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

11 Which of the following can best describe Denevan
A. Generous. B. Open-minded.
C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.

A. They will produce more flowers. B. They will die owing to competition.
C. They will make adult plants larger. D. They will get support from adult plants.
14. What is the effect of the nurse-seedling partnership
A. It leads to unfavorable environments.
B. It produces long-term healthy chances.
C. It attracts higher and larger pollinators.
D. It provides a more variety of plant types.
15. Who will benefit from the new research
A. People studying organic farming.
B. People protecting plants on sand hills.
C. People wanting to change biodiversity.
D. People keeping more animals on the farm.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. B

第二节(满分20分)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and take out the money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. “Yes, those children need help and need the money more.” I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you. ” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now. ” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness.
