Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues. Her latest projects are no different, from museums to sculptures for Presidential centers.
Lin, 62, grew up in Ohio, the daughter of college professors who were Chinese immigrants. As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national prominence when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls engraved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954-1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.
Lin went on to design the 1989 Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and dozens of other projects globally, all with social and environmental justice in mind. She told The Wall Street Journal she uses facts in her art. She said, “I am going to present you with what the story is, but I am not going to draw the conclusion for you.” Currently underway is Lin’s plan for the new Museum of Chinese in America in New York City. Lin said she wants it to be a celebration of Chinese American stories and contributions to the country.
Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. When Obama awarded Lin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, he called her work “physical acts of poetry, each reminding us that the most important element in art or architecture is human emotion.”
24.What is Maya Lin’s principle to make her creation
A.Art is to lead to reputation B.Art is a physical act of poetry.
C.Art is to create something distinguished. D.Art can be a medium to approach affairs.
25.What is conveyed in her work for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
A.US soldiers’ sacrifice in the Vietnam War.
B.The influence of the Vietnam War on America.
C.The bloody and cruel scenes of the Vietnam War.
D.Vietnamese soldiers’ fearless fight in the Vietnam War.
26.Where will the sculpture of Barack Obama’s mother be housed
A.Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
B.Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
C.Museum of Chinese in America in New York City.
D.Obama Presidential Center in Illinois.

A.Designing with talents
B.Stirring up emotions in art

Cancer-fighting genes in elephants could help tackle one of the biggest killers of people, according to research. Despite their large bodies and long lifespans, elephants are much less likely to die from cancer than humans, with death rates of less than 5 percent.
The paradox has puzzled scientists because more cells lead to greater replications (复制), which increases the possibility of the body failing to detect damaged DNA or a faulty cell that can result in tumors(肿瘤). Elephants live for almost as long as humans and weigh up to five tons.
However, a group of British and European scientists say they have taken a big step towards solving Peto’s paradox, named after the British epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto. Elephants, they say, carry a much larger more diverse group of tumor-fighting proteins.
The findings, published last week in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, raise hopes that the cancer fighting genes in elephants could be the key to tackling cancer, which kills about 167, 000 Britons yearly. Cells keep dividing throughout an organism’s life, each carrying the risk of producing a tumor. One of the body’s weapons is a gene called p53 known as the “guardian of the genome”, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. It encourages the cell to repair itself or self-destruct, keeping the cell from combining with others and producing tumors.
Humans have two versions of p53 but elephants have 40, said the researchers. Biochemical analysis and computer simulations also showed that an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, providing a much larger anti-cancer toolkit. The researchers suspect that while faulty cells might be able to skirt two p53 versions, they cannot combine with other cells as easily in the face of dozens.
The findings will open the way for research on how p53 genes of elephants are activated and on medical treatment for humans.
28. What has puzzled scientists
A. Few elephants end up dying from cancer.
B. Elephants live long and weigh enormously.
C. More cells lead to higher chances of tumors.
D. A larger body is less likely to discover faulty cells.
29. What can be learnt from Paragraph 4
A. How many Britons die each year. B. How the anti-cancer gene works.
C. How the research was carried out. D. What the findings have been applied to.
30. What does the underlined word “skirt” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. strengthen. B. detect. C. escape. D. cure.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Scientists find elephants live longer than humans.
B. P53 genes play essential role in preventing cancer.
C. Elephant genes could be key to fighting cancer.
D. Groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on the way.
D
If you’ve noticed you’re getting less while your bill almost stays the same, it’s not just you. “Shrinkflation” — reducing a product’s size or quantity while keeping its price stable — is showing up in shops around the world.
As the global economy struggles with inflation (通货膨胀), rising material costs and higher human cost, consumers are bearing the increasing production prices. “Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,” says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers “less painful”.
Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way. “Shoppers don’t have a choice. They have to adapt themselves to the changes,” adds Stiving. There are rare exceptions, but companies generally take the opportunity to get more profits.
For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable. In food industry, for example, where customers are highly sensitive to price, lifting prices might make customers jump ship to another brand. But facing the continuous inflation, the companies have to do something to maintain their profits. Introducing small reduction in the size of their goods should enable them to improve profits while keeping their prices competitive. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.
Some grocers are using stickers to remind shoppers of shrinkflation, but still, it’s a tough hit to the bottom line — especially because the price of products generally doesn’t fall as inflation does. Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.
32.Why does shrinkflation make consumers “less painful” according to Stiving
A.Shrinkflation reduces human cost.
B.Shrinkflation raises purchasing power.
C.Consumers become more aware of size.
D.Consumers experience little increase in cost.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The concerns of shoppers. B.The interests of companies.
C.The impact of shrinkflation. D.The phenomenon of inflation.
34.What is the author’s attitude to the shrinkflation in paragraph 4
A.Favorable. B.Objective.
C.Dismissive. D.Unclear.
35.What should consumers do according to the last paragraph
A.Draw a bottom line. B.Put warning stickers.
C.Choose smaller packs. D.Make a conscious decision.

How to Learn Chinese
I studied Mandarin Chinese 50 years ago. 36 , as you probably know. Below I list my tips on how to learn Chinese which you may want to apply to your language studies.
37
Start out by focusing on listening. Just get used to the sounds. You should also read aloud whatever you are listening to, so that you can get a better sense of what you are hearing. You will have to learn the characters eventually but try to get yourself a little bit familiar with the language first.
Devote Time to Memorizing Characters
We usually fail to learn Characters either because they are meaningless to us or because the connections between them are too weak. As a matter of fact, Characters must be visualized over and over again. 38 . Just remember rote-learning(死记硬背) doesn’t really help.
Recognize Patterns Rather than Rules
Focus on patterns. Don’t get caught up in complicated grammar explanations, just focus on patterns. When I was studying, I had a wonderful book by Harriet Mills. It was called Modern Chinese. 39 .
Read More than You Can Handle
Read a lot. If I learned faster than my fellow students 50 years ago, it is because I read much more than them. 40 . The mind is a muscle. It needs exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability.
A.Focus on reading
B.Be an auditory learner
C.Reading is important because it develops the mind
D.Like most of the other language skills, reading requires practice
E.Therefore, flashcards with pictures can be effective memorization tools
F.A scientific approach and persistence are essential to learning any language
G.In every single lesson she introduced patterns which were the frames around which I could build whatever I wanted to say

“Don’t bug me! Hug me!” Bumper Sticker Lee Shapiro is a retired judge. He is also one of the most genuinely loving people we know. At one point in his career, Lee realized that love is the greatest power there is. As a result, Lee became a hugger. He began offering everybody a hug. His colleagues dubbed him “the hugging judge”, which is opposed to the hanging judge. The bumper sticker on his car reads, “Don’t bug me! Hug me!”
About six years ago Lee created what he called his Hugger Kit. On the outside it reads “A heart for a hug.” The inside contains thirty little red embroidered hearts with stickers on the back. Lee will take out his Hugger Kit, go around to people and offer them a little red heart in exchange for a hug. Lee has become so well known for this that he is often invited to keynote conferences and conventions, where he shares his message of unconditional love.
At a conference in San Francisco, the local news media challenged him by saying, “It is easy to give out hugs here in the conference to people who self-selected to be here. But this would never work in the real world.” They challenged Lee to give away some hugs on the streets of San Francisco. Followed by a television crew from the local news station, Lee went out onto the street. First he approached a woman walking by. “Hi, I’m Lee Shapiro, the hugging judge. I’m giving out these hearts in exchange for a hug.” “Sure,” she replied. “Too easy,” challenged the local commentator. Lee looked around. He saw a meter maid who was being given a hard time by a traffic police, who was giving a ticket to her for illegal car parking. He marched up to her, camera crew in tow, and said, “You look like you could use a hug. I’m the hugging judge and I’m offering you one.” She delightedly accepted it. The television commentator threw down a more hug challenge to Lee.

W: Hmm...yes. Saturday mornings were always filled with endless promises, but then they would disappear in minutes!
M: Exactly. And even car journeys! If I’m in a hurry, the journey seems so long. If I’m not rushing, it seems much shorter!

My way to stay young is simple: Give full attention to the part of you that’s young and growing — your brain. Keep your mind active and your body will stay young, too. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning one new thing every day.
Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a house wife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist.
Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know I man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.

27.Which of the following best suits the topic of the passage
A.Designing with talents
B.Stirring up emotions in art
C.Becoming a great Chinese immigrant
D.Creating the most influential architecture
【答案】24.D 25.A 26.D 27.B
根据第一段中“Maya Lin, designer and sculptor, has created some of the most iconic works and spaces with the belief that art can address important issues.(林璎,设计师和雕塑家,带着艺术可以解决重要问题的理念创造了一些最具标志性的作品和空间。她最近的项目也不例外,从博物馆到总统中心的雕塑。)”可知,Maya Lin所创作的作品一直践行着艺术可以解决重要问题的理念;由此可知,林璎创作的原则是艺术可以是解决重要事情的一个方法。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a 21-year-old student at Yale University, she gained national prominence when her entry won a design competition for the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her winning design — two black granite (花岗岩) walls engraved with the names of US service members who died in the Vietnam War (1954-1975) or remain missing — is considered one of the most influential in modern architecture.(作为耶鲁大学的一名21岁的学生,她赢得了华盛顿特区新越南退伍军人纪念碑的设计比赛,从而在全国引起了关注。她的获奖设计——两面黑色花岗岩墙上刻有在越南战争(1954-1975)中阵亡或失踪的美国军人的名字——被认为是现代建筑中最具影响力的设计之一。)”可知,她的获奖设计越战退伍军人纪念碑上刻有在越南战争中阵亡或失踪的美国军人的名字;由此可知,她所设计的作品越战退伍军人纪念碑表达了美国士兵在越南战争中的牺牲。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Lin is also designing a sculpture to honor former President Barack Obama’s mother, who died in 1995, at the Obama Presidential Center in Illinois. (林还在伊利诺斯州的奥巴马总统中心设计一座雕塑,以纪念1995年去世的前总统巴拉克·奥巴马的母亲。)”可知,奥巴马母亲的雕塑将被安置在伊利诺伊州的奥巴马总统中心。故选D。
27.主旨大意题。本文主要讲述了著名设计师兼雕塑家Maya Lin的生平事迹以及她的一些作品,她通过所创作出的艺术作品表达了不同的情感。B选项“Stirring up emotions in art(在艺术中唤起情感)”最符合文章的主题,与文章结尾句中的“each reminding us that the most important element in art or architecture is human emotion(每一个都提醒我们,艺术或建筑中最重要的元素是人类的情感)”相呼应。故选B。
C
A 29. B 30. C 31. C
A. Few elephants end up dying from cancer. 根据第一段中的句子“elephants are much less likely to die from cancer than humans, with death rates of less than 5 percent”可知,科学家们困惑的是大象死于癌症的几率非常低,因此选项A是正确的。
B. How the anti-cancer gene works. 根据第四段中的句子“Humans have two versions of p53 but elephants have 40”以及“an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, providing a much larger anti-cancer toolkit”可知,第四段主要讲述了抗癌基因p53是如何工作的,所以选项B是正确的。
30.C. escape. 根据第五段中的句子“while faulty cells might be able to skirt two p53 versions, they cannot combine with other cells as easily in the face of dozens.”
31. C. Elephant genes could be key to fighting cancer.
根据第二段中“‘Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,’ says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers ‘less painful’.(Impact pricing的首席定价教育专家Mark Stiving表示:‘当尺寸减小时,消费者更有可能注意到他们的购买对他们钱包的影响,而不是产品损失的数量。’因此,企业利用缩水式通胀让消费者‘不那么痛苦’)”可知,相比于商品尺寸的减少,消费者更关注价格的波动,因此,缩水式通货膨胀来使消费者成本几乎没有增加,从而“不那么痛苦”,故选D。
33.主旨大意题。根据第三段内容,结合前两句“Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way.(然而,即使缩水式通胀伴随着通胀而来,问题也不会在通胀结束后才结束。一旦新尺码上市,它们很可能会一直保持这种状态)”可知,本段主要讲述缩水式通货膨胀的后续影响,即产品的尺寸一旦减少,后续可能很难再变回来,故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.(对许多公司来说,缩水式通胀似乎是不可避免的。
根据最后一段中“Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.(消费者在购物时可能需要理智地检查价格和尺码,并确保自己不会落入货架上超大尺码的陷阱)”可知,本段提到消费者在购物时需要明智地考虑价格和尺寸,确保自己不会陷入价格陷阱。

Dear fellow sports enthusiasts,
I am writing to you representing Students Daily. For anyone who is going to Paris for the Olympics, please remember to carry with us not only our passion for sports but also the core of being civilized and respectful spectators.
The importance of watching sports with civility cannot be overstated. It is not just about enjoying the game but about representing our culture and showcasing the grace of Chinese spectators. Our conduct reflects the respect we have for the spirit of sportsmanship.
For example, you could “Cheer Responsibly”. While it's great to show support for your favorite team, remember to cheer in a way that is encouraging and positive. Avoid any form of rude language or actions that could offend others.
Safe travels and enjoy the games!

He had never before hugged people who were severely terminally ill as Leonard. Through taking to doctors, Lee learned that Leonard, once an optimistic and happy boy, had suffered from severe leukemia two years earlier. Approaching the ward, Lee took a deep breath, leaned down and gave Leonard a hug. Surprisingly, Leonard began to smile. And some of the other patients in the room began to gather around. Lee turned to the staff for some sort of explanation only to find every doctor, nurse and orderly crying. Lee asked the doctors, “What’s going on ”
Doctors said it was the first time that they had seen Leonard smile. Upon hearing the doctor’s words, Lee could not control his emotions. Countless people as he had hugged before, this hug would surely leave the deepest memory for him. Every weekend, Lee made time to hug the boy with the television commentator recording every touching hug movement. Loved by a stranger, the boy was positive to receive treatment and he gradually picked up. If everyone can offer their own hug, the world will become more beautiful. How simple it is to make a difference to lives of others!
