When you hear the word “birthmark” you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s different — I have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips ” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.
In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before their personality.
My birthmarks are caused by a genetic(基因的) condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.
My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.
Inspired by my cousin I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.
24. How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks
A. She felt excited to show her difference.
B. She felt annoyed to give others an answer.
C. She was scared to be made fun of by people.
D. She was bored to be faced with the question.
25. Who has the similar birthmarks like the author
A. Her mother. B. Her grandmother.
C. Her cousin. D. Her uncle.
26. What can be inferred about the author’s cousin
A. She dislikes talking about her birthmark.
B. She never judges others by their looks.
C. She is more confident than the author.
D. She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.
27. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Brilliant. B. Apparent.
C. Harmful. D. Impressive.

Parrots are prey animals, which means that other predators (捕食者) in the wild, such as hawks or snakes, are looking to make them into a meal. This one factor influences parrots’ behavior in your house more than any other.
Parrots are most easily hurt when feeding on the ground. Membership in a group plays an important function in ensuring their safety and improving their chances of survival from attacks by predators. The most common predators of parrots include hawks, snakes, cats, monkeys, and bats. Some predators make attacks only during the day while others hunt in the night.
As prey animals, parrots are constantly watching out for danger and they instinctively (本能地) react to risks. Their first choice is to take flight. However, if this is not possible, they will fight with their powerful beaks to defend themselves.
Because their biggest enemy is the hawk, parrots are especially reactive to quick movements from above and behind. For this reason, it is wise to avoid quick, sudden movements near your bird. This is a built-in reaction not subject to logic or reason. Simple and relatively harmless household objects can draw extreme fear responses from a bird. For example, a balloon may represent a hawk or a vacuum hose (吸尘器软管) may be the same as a snake in your bird’s mind.
As prey animals, parrots are often frightened by exposure to new household items or strangers. It is important to expose your bird to safe experiences and changes starting at a very young age to build flexibility and improve their adaptability. Variety in diet and toys, travel, and exposure to new people and places all help to make your bird more flexible and adaptable to change.
28. What is important for parrots to better survive from attacks in the wild
A. Living in a group. B. Growing beautiful feathers.
C. Feeding on the ground. D. Avoiding coming out at night.
29. What is parrots’ first response to an immediate risk
A. To attack back. B. To get away.
C. To protect the young. D. To play dead.
30. Why would a balloon frighten a parrot
A. It may explode suddenly. B. It may be in a strange shape.
C. It may have a strong color. D. It may move around quickly.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To explain wild parrots’ behavior. B. To give advice on raising a parrot.
C. To call for action to protect animals. D. To introduce a study on bird ecology.
D
Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disease which leads to shaky hands and slow movement, and there is no cure. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art that combines (结合) slow, gentle movements with deep breathing and relaxation, may be an effective means of reducing the suffering. Recently, the researchers say that those who practised the martial art twice a week had fewer complications (并发症) and better quality of life than those who didn’t. Experts say the findings back up previous studies on the benefits of exercise for those with Parkinson’s.
The study, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, monitored the health of hundreds of Parkinson’s patients for up to five years. One group of 147 people practised regular Tai Chi while another group of 187 did not. The researchers found that the disease progressed more slowly in the Tai Chi group on measurements of symptoms (症状), movement and balance. This group also saw fewer falls, less back pain and dizziness, with memory and concentration problems also lower than in the other group. At the same time, sleep and quality of life continuously improved.
Prof. Alastair Noyce, professor in neurology and neuroepidemiology at Queen Mary University of London, called it “an important study”—the positive effects on aspects of motor (运动的) and non-motor functions are impressive — but said there were limitations in its design, and more tests were needed.
“We already recommend Tai Chi, as well as other forms of exercise, but understanding which forms of exercise are most beneficial is an important goal to improve the long-term management of patients,” he said.
32. Why was the study conducted
A. To find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
B. To improve the sleep quality of Parkinson’s patients.
C. To remove the misunderstanding of the previous studies.
D. To research the benefits of Tai Chi for those with Parkinson’s.
33. Which of the following is not the researchers’ finding
A. Concentration problem was lower in the Tai Chi group.
B. The disease progressed more slowly in the Tai Chi group.
C. Patients in the non-Tai Chi group continuously fell down.
D. Back pain and dizziness were relieved in the Tai Chi group.
34. What can we learn from Prof. Alastair Noyce’s words
A. Tai Chi should be given more preference.
B. Finding the most beneficial exercise is of importance.
C. It is unnecessary to do more related studies.
D. Improve the long-term management of patients is impossible.
35. What is Prof. Alastair Noyce’s attitude towards the study
A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Worried.

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ” “Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it ” asked the man kindly. “Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me ” On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

根据第二段中的“In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing(噘起) my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them”(在照片中,我常常撅起嘴巴来掩饰我的胎记。
根据第一段中的“For me, it’s different-I have them on my lips and inside my mouth”(对于我而言,这是不同的-我嘴唇上和嘴巴里面都有胎记。)
依据第四段中的“My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance”(我表姐也面临同样的挑战。
根据画线词后面的“suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often...she wouldn’t be such a person as she is”(建议她应该多穿长袖......
C

A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Worried.
D 33. C 34. B 35. C

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she pushed the door open and entered the house, she found her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sunk down into the sofa. “ Where could my mother be ” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me ” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, fatigued but relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’ arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude.
