By reusing through events like Stop ‘N’ Swap, NYC residents can take part in saving over 40 million pounds of material from landfill every year. I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her.
So when I moved to New York and got depressed, I did the only thing I could think of. I wrote those same kinds of letters like my mother for strangers, and tucked them all over the city: in cafes, in libraries, and even in the subway. I blogged about those letters and promised if asked for a hand-written letter, I would write one.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters.
Today I run a global organization fueled by those trips to the mailbox. It is a miracle. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people brought up in a paperless world where some best conversations happen on a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly in twitter.
Therefore, I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.” And a man, who had decided to take his life, slept safely with a stack of letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.
These stories convince me that letter-writing will never need to be about efficiency, because it is an art now, all of it: the signing, the scripting, the mailing.
24.Why did the author share her experience in college
A.To show her care for her family. B.To convey her love for writing letters.
C.To express her feelings attached to letters. D.To prove her consistency in writing letters.
25.What caused the author to launch the act
A.She advocated the paperless lifestyle. B.She intended to provide professional aid.
C.She tried to improve her communication skills. D.She aimed to give emotional support with letters.
26.Why does the author call the mail crate “a magical icebreaker”
A.It cures people of mental diseases. B.It serves as a conversation starter.
C.It has magic power to melt ice. D.It empowers people to be brave.
27.What is the best title for the passage
A.Family Letters Are Priceless B.Love for Writing Never Declines
C.World Needs More Love Letters D.Hand-written Letters Improve Efficiency
C
Since the last ice age, humans have cleared nearly half of the earth’s forests and grasslands for agriculture. With the world population expanding, there’s ever-increasing pressure on farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it’s created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.
A recent study from the University of California, however, shows how farmers may soon harvest crops and energy together. One researcher, Majdi Abou Najm, explains that visible light spectrum (光谱) can be separated into blue and red light waves, and their photons (光子) have different properties. Blue ones have higher energy than red ones. While that gives blue light what is needed to generate power, it also results in higher temperatures. “From a plant angle, red photons are the efficient ones,” says Abou Najm. “They don’t make the plant feel hot.”
A goal of the study is to create a new generation of solar panels. He sees potential in the organic solar cells, which come from carbon-based materials. Thin and transparent, the cells are applied like a film onto various surfaces. This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below. These panels could also provide shade for heat-sensitive fruits during the hottest part of the day.
By 2050, we’ll have two billion more people, and we’ll need more food and more energy. By maximizing the solar spectrum, “we’re making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,” says Abou Najm. “If a technology kicks in that can develop these panels, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.”
28.What problem does the first paragraph focus on
A.Losing cropland to solar panels.
B.Distribution of the world population.
C.Reduction in forests and grasslands.
D.Competing for land between farmers.
29.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Generation of solar power.
B.Hot weather increasing efficiency.
C.Blue photons having higher energy.
D.Separation of visible light spectrum.
30.What do we know about the organic solar cells
A.They make fruits heat-sensitive.
B.They can cool down in hot days,
C.They allow red light to pass through.
D.They can store carbon-based materials.
31.What does Abou Najm think of the future of the new solar panels
A.Limited. B.Promising.
C.Uncertain. D.Challenging.

The news industry has had a rough decade. Print readership is steadily declining, newspapers are closing, and journalists with decades of experience are being laid off. In response, major newspapers have made significant changes. They’re attempting to combat declining reader interest by shortening stories, creating clickbait (诱饵性标题), and most especially, using social media to their advantage.
With the rise of social media sites, many people have claimed that we are entering a new age in which news must be delivered in 140 characters or fewer. People’s ability to focus on long-form content and engage in deep reading has also been declining due to the endless distractions and excessive information in today’s world. This change in reading habits has led to a preference for short, easily understood news pieces that can be quickly consumed. To interest a more specific and generally younger readership, newspapers have revised content, prioritizing articles that are visually appealing instead of having depth.
But, in reality, there is still a demand for in-depth reporting. In this era of misinformation and clickbait, readers are seeking reliable sources of news that provide context, analysis, and accountability. Depth reporting explores the fundamental causes, involves multiple perspectives, and uncovers the hidden truths that shape our world, helping readers get a more comprehensive understanding of complicated matters.
While social media have changed the way we consume news, the quality of news remains essential for the public. It’s crucial for the news industry to achieve a balance between catering to changing reader preferences while also maintaining the integrity (完整性) of news. This means providing both quick updates and in-depth analysis, and using social media to promote their content, but not at the expense of accuracy or integrity. By doing so, news
organizations can ensure that they remain relevant and trusted sources of information in a rapidly changing media environment.
32.What problem does traditional news industry face
A.The decline of readership. B.The lack of long-form stories.
C.The spread of unreliable information. D.The shortage of experienced journalists.
33.What does the underlined word “prioritizing” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Checking out. B.Cutting down.
C.Paying no attention to. D.Attaching importance to.
34.What do we know from paragraph 3
A.People’s need for in-depth reporting is decreasing.
B.Social media has played a key role in promoting hidden facts.
C.Clickbait greatly increases readers’ interests in exploring truths.
D.In-depth reporting can improve readers’ comprehension of complex issues.
35.According to the passage, the news industry should achieve a balance between ______.
A.providing quick updates and focusing on popular topics
B.stating matters in multiple perspectives and shortening articles
C.satisfying readers’ preferences and ensuring the quality of news
D.widening news sources and maintaining the accuracy of contents

【答案】11.B 12.A 13.C
M: In the future, many of our current jobs will be done by robots.
W: The future is closer than you think. Several of my friends were fired in a car factory, because robots are now replacing them.
M: Robots do offer better output (产量) for less cost. They can operate all day and night.
W: This is true, but my friends are no longer earning any money.
M: Hopefully they will be able to find other jobs.
W: It is getting harder to find a job that will not be replaced in a few years’ time.
M: This is true. I read a report that said in this decade, 3% of jobs were at risk from machines.
W: I read the same report. That number would jump to 33% during the next decade.
M: Yes, but they also pointed out that robots and artificial intelligence could boost the global economy by $15 trillion.
W: Do you think they will replace lawyers like us
M: Not anytime soon.
W: We have to work long hours, but at least we have job security.

根据第一段“I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her.(我是大学里唯一一个有理由去邮箱的孩子,因为我母亲从来不相信电子邮件、
和第二段第一句“So when I moved to New York and got depressed, I did the only thing I could think of.(所以当我搬到纽约感到沮丧时,我做了我唯一能想到的事。)”
根据第三段“Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters.(一夜之间,我的收件箱变成了心碎的港湾——萨克拉门托的单身母亲,堪萨斯被欺负的女孩,一个22岁的移民,都让我给他们写信,给他们一个在邮箱旁等待的理由。这就是我发起“世界需要更多爱的信件”行动的原因。)”可知,作者发起这项行动是为了通过写信给予情感上的支持。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据第五段第二句“So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.”(于是我开始给陌生人讲述一个女人的故事,她的丈夫在战争中受到了创伤,她如何在家里到处留下情书,说:“回到我身边来。”)”

He sees potential in the organic solar cells,
which come from carbon-based materials.
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.C 31.B

With the world population expanding, there’s ever-increasing pressure on
farmland to produce not only more food but also clean energy. In places such as Yakima County, Washington, it’s created competition for space as land-hungry solar panels (板) consume available fields. Last month, the state approved plans to cover 1,700 acres of agricultural land with solar panels, fueling concerns over the long-term impacts of losing cropland.(随着世界人口的增长,农田不仅要生产更多的粮食,还要生产清洁能源,农田的压力越来越大。 故选A。
根据画线词前一句“Blue ones have higher energy than red ones.(蓝色的光子比红色的光子能量高。)”
根据第三段中的“This new technology could be used to develop special solar panels that block blue light to generate power, while passing the red light on to crops planted directly below.(这项新技术可以用于开发特殊的太阳能电池板,该电池板可以阻挡蓝光发电,同时让红光传给正下方种植的作物。)”
根据最后一段中的“By maximizing the solar spectrum, ‘we’re making full use of an endlessly sustainable resource,’ says Abou Najm. ‘If a technology kicks in that can develop these panels, then the sky is the limit on how efficient we can be.’(Abou Najm说,通过最大限度地利用太阳能光谱,‘我们正在充分利用无尽的可持续资源。’‘如能够开发出这些面板的果一项技术生效,那么我们的效率就是无限的。’)”可知,Abou Najm认为有机太阳能电池板能够最大限度地利用无尽的太阳能资源,让人类的效率变得无限,由此可推测出,他认为有机太阳能电池板非常有前景。故选B。

This change in reading habits has led to a preference for short, easily understood news pieces that can be quickly
consumed.
By doing so, news organizations can ensure that they remain relevant and trusted sources of information in a rapidly changing media environment.
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.D 35.C
根据第一段“The news industry has had a rough decade. Print readership is steadily declining, newspapers are closing, and journalists with decades of experience are being laid off.(新闻行业经历了艰难的十年。纸质报纸的读者数量正在稳步下降,报纸正在关闭,拥有数十年经验的记者正在被解雇)”可知,传统新闻业面临的问题是读者群体数量下降。故选A项。
根据画线词上文“People’s ability to focus on long-form content and engage in deep reading has also been declining due to the endless distractions and excessive information in today’s world. This change in reading habits has led to a preference for short, easily understood news pieces that can be quickly consumed.(由于当今世界无休止的干扰和过多的信息,人们专注于长篇内容和深度阅读的能力也在下降。
根据第三段中的“Depth reporting explores the fundamental causes, involves multiple perspectives, and uncovers the hidden truths that shape our world, helping readers get a more comprehensive understanding of complicated matters.(深度报道探究根本原因,涉及多个角度,揭示塑造我们世界的隐藏真相,帮助读者更全面地了解复杂的事物)”可知,深度报道可以提高读者对复杂问题的理解。故选D项。
根据最后一段“While social media have changed the way we consume news, the quality of news remains essential for the public. It’s crucial for the news industry to achieve a balance between catering to changing reader preferences while also maintaining the integrity (完整性) of news. This means providing both quick updates and in-depth analysis, and using social media to promote their content, but not at the expense of accuracy or integrity. By doing so, news organizations can ensure that they remain relevant and trusted sources of information in a rapidly changing media environment.(虽然社交媒体改变了我们读新闻的方式,但新闻的质量对公众来说仍然至关重要。对于新闻行业来说,在迎合不断变化的读者偏好和保持新闻的完整性之间取得平衡至关重要。这意味着提供快速更新和深入分析,并利用社交媒体推广他们的内容,但不以准确性或完整性为代价。通过这样做,新闻机构可以确保它们在迅速变化的媒体环境中保持相关性和可信赖的信息来源)”可知,作者建议新闻业应该在满足读者偏好的同时,确保新闻的质量。故选C项。

To make your presentation memorable, you can try using “sticky stories” in your speeches — honest, vivid anecdotes (逸闻) with details that engage the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. People remember stories and images.
Practice in front of people
Practicing your speech can ease feelings of nervousness and help you adjust your presentation. Ask a friend or a family member to listen to you as you practice. You can also take a voice memo with your phone and play it back to yourself. 39
Slow down and start again
If something unexpected happens in the moment — say you stumble (结巴) or lose your place — pause or slow down. Take a deep breath and go back to the beginning of a sentence or restate the word you stumbled on. And don’t worry, people don’t notice those pauses as much as you think they do. 40 The point is to set yourself up for success, not perfection.
A.Use vivid imagery and storytelling.
B.These problems will drive you mad.
C.Avoid big words and long sentences.
D.Even if someone does notice, that’s OK, too.
