Holland is a country where much of the land lies below sea level. Only great walls called dikes keep the North Sea from rushing in and flooding the land. For centuries the people of Holland have worked to keep the walls strong so that their country will be safe and dry. Even the little children know the dikes must be watched every moment, and that a hole no longer than your finger can be a very dangerous thing.
There lived a boy named Peter, Peter’s father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes. One afternoon in the early fall, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter,” she said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. If you go quickly, and do not stop to play, you will be home again before dark.”
The little boy was glad to go on such a job, and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him about his walk along the dike and about the sun and the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother’s wish that he should return before dark and, saying goodbye to his friend, he set out for home.
A she walked along he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road. Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling (流淌) water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do.

Doubts clouded my mind as I into that new world, Parsons School of Design. But fate had a plan, introducing me to Kathleen, who would become my guiding light.
I remember feeling out of place on my first day at Parsons, questioning everything from my outfit to my abilities. As I walked in and scanned the classroom, my vision sharply stopped on one person. Wow. She looked cool. I plopped myself down next to her and introduced myself as Dorri, thrilled when she smiled and said, “Hi. I’m Kathleen.” That was all it took.
What a difference Kathleen made in my school life! Her confidence, discipline, and responsibility were worlds away from my shaky, wild, and lazy nature. We became inseparable, signing up for the same classes, and I was always trying to earn her approval.
One day the homework assignment was to create an exciting illustration based on a pair of shoes. Bursting with ideas, I pulled out my favorite pair of antique thrift shop “old-lady shoes” and poured my heart into the project. Proud of my work, I rushed to Kathleen’s apartment to show her my creation, holding up my paper with glowing confidence. But Kathleen’s reaction was unexpected, crushing my pride with a single question: “Is that the only drawing you did ”
“Well, yes,” I responded sheepishly, “Why ”
“Come on,” she said. “Let’s go to Washington Square Park and really do some drawings.” I was puzzled, but when she led, I willingly followed, with my pad tucked under my arm.
As we made our way to the park, Kathleen enthusiastically talked about form, content, and composition and stressed the significance of observing subjects closely. She described the shoes in my drawing as the kind worn by elderly women who frequent the park to feed pigeons. That moment, she taught me to look closely and recreate diligently.

In the town of Willowbrook, young Sarah was in a state of great excitement. Her school was putting on its annual play, and she had been offered a principal role. The school hall had been abuzz for weeks with rehearsals, prop (道具) preparations, and the students practicing their lines. Sarah had spent countless hours rehearsing, wanting to get every word and movement absolutely right.
However, underlying her anticipation was a growing sadness. Sarah’s dad, Mr Thompson, worked as an engineer in a big city, and his job often kept him away from home for a long time, which meant he frequently missed out on most of the special moments in Sarah’s life. This play seemed to be another addition to that growing list. He had a vital business meeting on the same day, and Sarah, although understanding, couldn’t help feeling disappointed. Her classmates talked excitedly about their families coming to watch, increasing her sense of loss.
It was bright and sunny on the day of the play. The school’s hall was noisy with students. Students in costumes rushed about, teachers gave last-minute instructions, and the air was thick with anticipation. Sarah peeped out from behind the curtains and saw the hall filling up with eager parents, siblings, and friends. Every seat was taken, except one — her dad’s.
The play started on time with Sarah and her classmates’ performance being the first. The actors delivered their lines with passion and the audience responded with laughter and applause at all the right moments. Sarah played her part with a mix of excitement and longing, wishing her dad could see her shine.
Halfway through, the host called for a surprise guest to enter. He described him as a “mysterious stranger” whose brief appearance would provide a turning point in the plot. As the lights dimmed slightly and suspenseful music played, a tall figure stepped onto the stage.

American football can be pretty competitive. From old opponents to fan drama, it’s just another part of the game. There have even been all-out violent fights in the name of defending your team. However, one high school football player Mario Hoefer showed that his love for the sport didn’t take priority over helping a person in need.
One afternoon in September, Charles City High School football team Mario was on faced nearby New Hampton in a Friday football game. Mario was captain of his team and Carter the quarterback of the opposing team.
It was really foggy and awfully hot. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer. Every player was we win sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough one and a test or the mind and body of both teams.
Soon the game began and for the first three quarters, each team seemed to have a chance to win and they took the lead by turns. So exhausted was Mario running back and forth that he cramped (抽筋) up twice. Each time he got a cramp near the New Hampton sideline, his teammates came to his assistance and stretched his leg to ease the cramp. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario soldiered on as Charles City protected a slim lead and New Hampton attempted a late comeback.
In the fourth quarter, Mario saw his teammates across the field break up a crucial pass intended for Carter. Mario was about to cross over to the other side of the field to high five his teammates when he noticed that beside him, Carter fell onto the ground, screaming in pain, his eyes wide open and a look of panic on his face. Carter grabbed his left calf (小腿肚), trying to move his leg in different positions. Judging from Carter’s desperate expression, Mario realized Carter was possibly experiencing an unbearable cramp just as he himself had gone through minutes before. But the New Hampton players were farther away from the quarterback.

My husband, Robert Stone and I were enjoying a peaceful afternoon together in Barbados — our vacation destination. It was sunny and warm, and we decided it was the perfect time to go for an ocean dip.
When we were floating around, I said, “What a nice holiday! Let’s swim out, not that far but enough to be out of our depth.” But we hadn’t considered just how strong the current was on that particular day. Although we had visited Barbados several times, we didn’t realize the specific area we floated to was known for its strong current.
Noticing that we were floating in the direction of the neighboring beach, I decided to swim toward the beach we came from, against the current. I soon realized that my husband was falling behind and was suddenly too far away to even hear me. I attempted to swim to the shore to get help but struggled to push past the current. I just couldn’t get anywhere and began to scream out for a lifeguard. But no one came after a few minutes.
Just then I saw two teenage girls boogie-boarding near the shore. “Help! Help!” I screamed. Hearing my cries for help, the girls swam toward me and helped pull me onto the boogie board. One girl told me to hold on tight and tied the boogie board tether (拴绳) to her wrist. The other girl was by her side for support. They managed to swim to the shore and brought me to safety.
Grateful but still scared, I repeated that my husband was stuck farther out in the ocean. I asked for a lifeguard. The girls told me there wasn’t a lifeguard around, and they would go get him. “You can’t do that!” I told them, “Strong current!” The girls reassured me that they were in Barbados as part of a swimming camp and insisted that they were both experienced in the water.

Two-Man Ironman
On Sept. 17, 2022, Jeff and his son, Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition in Cambridge, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming, bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Johnny was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and could barely walk a few steps with the help of a rolling walker. But his dream of being a runner never stopped.
Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 am, so Jeff could run while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, they drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition. At first, Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son. Gradually, Johnny could even run a few miles using a rolling walker.
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River. Jeff helped Johnny into a kayak (独木舟). With one end of a rope tied to a harness around his back and the other end to the kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person was tough enough—Jeff also had to struggle with jellyfish. “I occupied my mind by counting the number of times I got stung (蛰),” he said.
The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and it was on to the next leg: a 112-mile bicycle ride. Their custom-built bike has an extra-strong frame and an additional seat in the back for Johnny that faces backward, the better to cheer on other competitors.
After completing the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race—a 26.2-mile marathon with Jeff pushing Johnny in the racing chair. They’d been competing for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time.

We had moved to a new town for my husband’s work. After living here for just a couple of weeks, I was more than ready to pick up my luggage and move back home. I was lonely for a friend. My boy Samuel was lonely. My husband, Lonny, adapted just fine, but he was occupied with work most of the time.
I missed our old neighborhood. It had been like a closely knitted community where neighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate brownies (巧克力蛋糕) and carrot bread. It had been easy to find friends there.
Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the Mississippi River that flowed past this tiny river town. Breaking in was tough.
“I’m so alone here,” I said to Lonny one evening. Lonny is a good listener, and a problem solver. “What have you done to meet people ” he asked. “I go to the park every day. I even dropped by a book salon (读书沙龙) at the library the other day and came across a nice lady with a boy.”
“Sounds not bad,” he said. “Did you talk to her ” The answer was no. It wasn’t that people here were unkind. I just didn’t feel like initiating conversations, and I preferred minding my own business in a new environment.
A few more months passed and winter settled in. It was harder than ever to meet people. I began to feel bitter. I was tired of trying to fit in a place where we didn’t belong.
Lonny noticed my low spirits. “Amy, you look unapproachable, with your arms crossed and everything,” he whispered in my ear one afternoon. He and I were sitting in the yard. Samuel, our five-year-old was playing baseball next to us.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to have friends here.” Just then Samuel looked up. He must’ve heard our whispers. “Mom’s right, Dad. We’ll never ever have friends here. And we just want to go back to our old home.” I sat there and looked at my tiny innocent son. His words mirrored my attitude. And I didn’t like the disturbing reflection.

A Regret
As I sat on the couch, my heart was filled with guilt. I recalled how terrible my mistake was, regretting my every move.
It was finally the start of the school holidays. As soon as I reached home, I jumped into my bed. “Freedom!” I shouted with joy.
“Tim, stop relaxing. Didn’t you say that you wanted to learn how to skate Your father bought you a new skateboard. He will start teaching you tomorrow!” my mother said with delight. Immediately, I jumped out of my bed and sped downstairs. Lying on the dining table was a wonderful skateboard with my name carved on it. The colours, shape and size of each pattern were incredible.
“Can I start now ” I questioned impatiently. My mum shook her head and firmly said that it was too dangerous. A frown (皱眉) filled my face. Disappointed, I took my new skateboard up to my room.
As I stared at the window, I realized how perfect the weather was. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. There were not many people as well. “No one will know that I stole out secretly and it will not be dangerous. There aren’t many people anyway!” Without hesitation, I tiptoed out of the house. “I can’t wait any longer! I can’t wait!” I spoke to myself in a whisper.
At a nearby park, I placed the skateboard on the ground. Despite being clueless on how to skate, I found a creative way to do so. One of my favourite moves was sitting on the skateboard, with two hands on it, using my legs to move forward.
Not long after, I crowned myself “Master of Skating”. I finally got the hang of it and was skating all around. “My method is amazing!” I announced. At that moment, I saw a long and steep slope (陡坡). My face lit up and I quickly headed towards it. I was filled with confidence to the edge. I flew down the slope with excitement and joy.

In a big city lived a girl named Amy. She was a clever and lively child, but her heart was often clouded by dissatisfaction. Whenever she saw other children playing with new dolls or dressed in fancy outfits, Amy’s eyes would sparkle with envy and she wished she had them too.
So she always asked her mother, “Mom, can I have this ” or “Mom, can I have that ” If her mom didn’t satisfy her need, Amy would respond with endless complaints or tears. She didn’t understand why she couldn’t possess what she desired.
Her mother, a wise and loving woman, tried to reason with Amy. She explained that Amy already had so many toys and clothes. She said, “Amy, you’re lucky to have so much. Learn to be happy with what you have.” But Amy’s ears were deaf to her mother’s words. She could only see what she lacked, and her heart remained heavy with dissatisfaction.
Amy’s discontentment affected her social life at high school. Her bad temper and constant complaints about what she lacked made it difficult for her to make friends. When Amy saw her desk mate Lily using new stationery (文具), she immediately said, “I have better ones.” Once, hearing some girls talking about their new dresses, she interrupted rudely, “My mom will buy me the same one, even nicer.” Other kids couldn’t bear her attitude and kept away from her gradually, which made Amy feel more lonely and unhappy.
When Amy told her mother the “unfair treatment” she faced at school, her mother was deeply concerned about her. She knew that Amy’s constant dissatisfaction was not appropriate and would eventually ruin her happiness completely. “Something must be done.” she thought. After deep consideration, she decided to take a different approach. One day, she invited Amy to join her in volunteering at a local charity that helped the children there in need. Initially, Amy refused, but her mother’s determined attitude persuaded her successfully.

I was eight years old when my family moved from Towoomba to England in 1950. My mother was suffering from a rare disease and had to take treatment in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father sent his five-year-old red heeler (Australian cattle dog), Spider, who was loved by us all, to his friend Sandy, as Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas. We didn’t know how long my mother’s treatment would take or how long we would be away.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face as he read this news. My mother and I tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was.
Sandy had advertised constantly on the media. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seemed Spider just kept running and searching for us. My father worried he would be shot or dead from starvation. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and my father immediately began his own search for Spider. He repeated calls to the people who had said they had seen his dog, but it turned out to be clueless.
One cold winter’s Saturday morning, eight months after our return, my father had a call from Gin Gin, 375 kilometers from Toowoomba. An elderly lady living on her own was putting food out “for a very old yellow dog”. This had been going on for a few weeks. Immediately we set off.
Five and a half hours later, we found the old house beside the bush (灌木丛). Sadly, the lady told my father that the dog hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had an upset look in his eyes. He put two fingers to his mouth and did his special whistle for Spider.

My parents were always against me owning my own pet, afraid of the mess it would make or that I would quickly lose interest in taking care of it, but we made a compromise: I could volunteer at a local pet shelter on the weekends to test my sense of responsibility and dedication. That was how I first came to volunteer at the Avondale pet shelter and—more importantly—where I met my future best friend, Chocolate.
One hot August afternoon, my boss Charlie told me that they were bringing in a young black Labrador Retriever and that I’d be its primary caretaker. An hour after our conversation and in came Chocolate—a beautiful dog with shining brown fur and amazing blue eyes. At about 3 months old, I expected him to be a lot more energetic and playful, but he immediately backed and lay down at the back of his pen (围栏).
I asked Charlie what was the matter with him. He replied that Chocolate had a genetic problem which caused him to be born with a short tail, leading potential owners to think there was something wrong with him; so the breeder felt that they had no choice but to give up the puppy to the shelter.
He was overlooked and underappreciated. I felt very angry at the thought that an otherwise healthy dog could be thrown away so easily. At the same time, I felt a deep sympathy for this dog who had been cheated out of the love and attention he deserved. It was at this moment that I resolved to give Chocolate as much love and attention as I could while working as a volunteer.
Although Chocolate was reluctant and shy at first. eventually through enough treats and play he slowly came around and warmed up to me. Soon enough, whenever I came around his pen to let him out for his turn of walks and play, Chocolate was always excited and jumping with joy.

For many, an act of kindness is its own reward. But Eva Hachey found her selflessness answered in ways she could never have imagined.
For weeks, Eva Hachey had imagined adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its forehead. And there he was, at her local SPCA in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The dog had been abused by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then come back to me,” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in my lap. He started giving me kisses. He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.
Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 35-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five months. Then, on the evening of September 26, 2016, Hachey, 52 at the time, returned home as usual at 8 p. m. from her job as a chiropractic assistant and office manager. And as usual, she ate supper in front of the TV in the living room. Around 10:30, a friend called, just as Bruno went into Hutchinson’s room to go to sleep for the night. Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and as Hachey hung up, she noticed the time was 11:08.
“The next thing I remember was a male voice saying, ‘Eva, Eva, wake up.’ It was an emergency doctor,” said Hachey. “I looked around, and the room was just full of people. And I said, ‘What are you doing in my house ’”
What they were doing was saving her life. By the time Hachey had hung up with her friend, Hutchinson was fast asleep in her bedroom and Bruno was in his usual spot next to her under the blankets. Hachey believed Bruno heard something odd then and possibly went to the living room to investigate.

Little free libraries have been dotting communities around the globe since the first one was set up in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009. During the pandemic (疫情), many people turned these libraries into little free stores to help neighbors in need. The stores were filled with canned food, peanut butter, and toilet paper. In Australia, a mother and her daughter decided to open a free plant stand to share flowers and joy with her community.
Because of the pandemic, people were enclosed and lonely. This was certainly true of Vicky Robinson and her daughter Rachel, who live in Redan, a suburb of Ballarat in Victoria.
The pair watched people walking by who looked sad and decided to come up with a way to cheer them up. “So we thought, ‘what can we create through our home education that can put a smile on people’s faces ’” the mother and daughter said.
Vicky looked at her front grassland and flowering rose bushes and suddenly had a bright idea. Understanding that gardening was a natural treatment that helped her relax, she came up with the idea for a plant exhibition stand that was like a little free plant library.
Her husband is a cupboard maker so he built a two-storied stand on their property line and filled it with young plants and succulents (多肉植物) reproduced from their own plants. In bold letters, there is a sign that reads, “Need a plant Take a plant. Have a plant Leave a plant.”
Despite having lived in Redan for 30 years, Vicky said that she never felt connected with her community before. There is little cost involved in setting up the little free plant library. “It’s all worth it just to see their smiles. We have developed trust with the community,” she said. “It leaves a legacy. It creates a bond in a circle, from generation to generation.”

After little Julie lost her parents, she lived with Aunt Clara, who worked day and night to support her and her own daughter Mira. As the school prom (舞会) approached, both Julie and Mira dreamed of buying beautiful dresses for the occasion. However, Clara’s limited budget posed a challenge, as she could only afford one dress.
To determine who would receive the dress, Clara suggested the girls draw lots (抽签). Unfortunately, luck was not on Julie’s side, but she remained optimistic. “Don’t worry about me,” Julie smiled. “I’ll figure something out.”
Julie reached under her bed and pulled out a box containing money from Grandma. Grandma loved Julie and Mira very much. Every year, Grandma would send cash gifts to both of them. Julie had carefully saved her money and now had enough to buy a prom dress. With excitement and anticipation, she purchased a beautiful black dress, imagining being the prom queen at the prom.
The following Sunday morning, Aunt Clara left for work early. When Julie woke up, she was shocked that the dress she had hung over the nearby chair was gone! She looked out of the window and froze in horror at the sight of the family dog tearing it to pieces.
She screamed as she ran toward the dog. “What have you done to my dress ” Mira soon learned of the situation and rushed to help Julie to remove her dress caught between the dog’s teeth. However, it was already completely ruined and unable to be repaired. Julie felt heartbroken at the thought of not being able to afford another dress.
Lost and unsure of what to do, Julie went to her grandma’s house with the remains of her dress, seeking comfort and advice. When Grandma answered the door, Julie cried and said what had happened. Grandma comforted her and offered a glimmer of hope. “I can help you with your dress,” she smiled. “Follow me."
Grandma, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病),walked slowly and led Julie into the dining room. There, she removed the cover from her old sewing machine and instructed Julie to open the top drawer of the dresser, where an abundance of colorful cloth was stored. Paragraph 1:
Julie said, “But I’m afraid that you couldn’t sew anymore. You know, your hands.”

Special#2,Please
My flight arrived in San Diego around midnight, and by the time I drove home and got into bed it was nearly 2:00 a. m. I was tired and jet-lagged when I dragged myself out of the bed. Nevertheless,I had to be up bright and early that morning: I was the opening keynoter(主旨发言人) at a national conference.
In short, I needed to recover quickly. A hearty breakfast in the early morning sun was what I needed. I headed for Carlos & Annie’s, a popular restaurant located in the heart of the seaside town.
“I’d like steak and eggs, please,” I said to the waitress after I had finally found a table in the restaurant. “Oh, I'm sorry,” she apologized. “We're out of Special#2. We've served the last of our steaks. How about Special#14 ” “Oh, no steak and eggs ” I couldn't seem to accept it.
I'm not sure if it was my heartfelt sigh that caught Carlos, the owner's attention. His warm, caring brown eyes seemed determined to pinpoint the best solution. He then said, “You know, I think I did see one final steak back
there.”
Pressing my luck,I quickly declared, “Wow,that would be great. But you know, I’m not sure if I want a breakfast stenk at all. What I really want is a steak—one that’s two inches thick, tender and juicy, served medium rare.” “Not to worry,” Carlos assured meand left. The young waitress gave me a wink(眨眼) and said with a knowing smile, “Carlosis being Carlos again!” I did not give her words much thought.
Then, I noticed Carlos as he left the restaurant through the side door and walked into a neighborhood grocery store across the street. Carlos exchanged morning greetings with everyone he knew and even helped the owner of the bookstore next door by holding the items that filled her arms. Then he reentered the restaurant with a bag in his hand.

参考答案:
1. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and put his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! This went all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. “Come here; come here,” he called. But no one heard him. Peter tried to whistle, but his teeth chattered with the cold. He thought of his beloved ones. “I must not let them be drowned,” he thought. “I must stay here until someone comes, even if I have to stay all night.”
It was long after sunset, and the anxious mother decided to go out and look for Peter. Finally, Peter was found crouching on a stone on the side of the dike. He was not asleep, for every now and then he rubbed the hand that was holding back the angry sea. As soon a she saw his mother, Peter yelled, “I’m keeping the water back! Tell them to come quickly!” The alarm was spread. People came running with shovels and the hole was soon mended. To this day, people have never forgotten the brave little hero of Holland.

2.One possible version :
At the park, Kathleen pointed to a bench with a napping old woman and said, “Here, draw her shoes repeatedly.” Eagerly, I settled onto a nearby bench, my sketchpad resting on my lap and pencil poised to capture the old woman’s shoes. With every pencil stroke, I focused on every detail I would have overlooked before — the worn leather, the frayed laces and the faded color. As I sketched, it felt like I was uncovering stories of a life well - lived, the rest of the world fading into the background. Kathleen, watching over my shoulder, offered tips and new angles to consider. The afternoon sun began to set, casting golden light over my paper, as Kathleen and I shared thoughts about our creations, our laughter mingling with the soft rustle of leaves.
The next day was the class feedback session. As I presented my drawings, anticipation curled in my stomach. Initially, a hush fell over the room, everyone’s attention, every pair of eyes fixed on the work I had poured my heart into. The teacher, surprised, nodded approvingly after studying my pieces. Soon the air buzzed with my classmates’ discussion, describing my work as “sensitive,” “accurate,” and “beautifully stylized”. Each word warmed my heart. Glancing over at Kathleen,I caught her eye, and she offered me a win k and a loving smile. At that moment, I knew I had drawn an illustration to be proud of, one that touched something universally human and one reflecting the journey Kathleen and I shared — a journey of art, friendship, and mutual appreciation. One possible version :
At the park, Kathleen pointed to a bench with a napping old woman and said,“Here, draw her shoes repeatedly.” Initially, I was taken aback by her suggestion. Drawing sleeping strangers felt invasive. However, Kathleen assured me that observing people in public places was common practice for artists and vital for capturing authenticity. Reluctantly, I began sketching, focusing on every crease and detail of the woman’s worn-out shoes. With Kathleen’s gentle guidance, I soon lost myself in the process, realizing the value of this exercise in honing my observational skills.
The next day was the class feedback session. Nervously, I presented my revised illustration, now featuring meticulously drawn shoes inspired by the elderly woman in the park. As my classmates and teacher praised the depth and realism of my work, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for Kathleen’s guidance. Her unconventional approach had pushed me out of my comfort zone, transforming my perspective on art and instilling in me a newfound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life. From that day forward, Kathleen’s lessons became more than just artistic guidance; they were a testament to the transformative power of friendship and mentorship.

Before I could say anything further, they swam off with the boogie board. Heart in my mouth, I stood helplessly on the shore, praying for their safety. Fortunately, the girls reached Robert quickly and helped pull him onto the boogie board timely. As they swam in, the strong current kept pulling them back, but they kept going and going. I waited for a few minutes; that seemed so many hours to me. Finally, the girls together made a really good team, and pulled him to shore.
Relief washed over me as the girls and Robert reached the shore. “Thank Goodness! You’re safe,” I said in a trembling voice. With tears in my eyes, I hugged Robert, who was exhausted and still in panic. We approached the girls and expressed our sincere gratitude, “We’re forever grateful to you! We would never come back without you!” But the girls insisted that it’s just what they should do. “We are so glad that you are both okay.” Seeing them leaving, Robert said, “They really were like a couple of angels on the beach!”

But at Mile 19, Jeff began to panic, convinced they were going too slow. Somehow he found the energy to pick up the pace, puffing and panting. Spotting sweat trickling down from his father’s wrinkled forehead, Johnny offered to run on his own with his rolling walker. Jeff stopped to help Johnny out of his racing chair, handing the rolling walker to his son. After years of painstaking work, Johnny increased his step counts and was determined to finish his races by himself. Johnny saw the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn’t make the cutoff. “Not because I wouldn’t get my moment,” he said, “but because Dad had worked so hard.”
After 16 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds, father and son crossed the finish line together. As the crowd engulfed and cheered on an overwhelmed Johnny, a weary Jeff kept a low profile. “My father didn’t want his finish line moment,” said Johnny, tears in eyes. “He wanted it to be mine. What he taught me is that it’s much easier to take on life one step at a time than it is to think about the huge task ahead of you.” Small steps lead to bigger steps. To Johnny, the final mile represents what his whole life with cerebral palsy has been about hard work, dedication, optimism, and determination.

That’s when I knew that I needed an adjustment. I didn’t want my boy to grow into a bitter kid. Over the next few weeks, I worked very hard to fit in. I greeted everyone with a friendly nod, arms uncrossed with a genuine smile. I struck up conversations with acquaintances at the park. I even baked chocolate brownies and offered them as a nice gesture to our neighbors. Most importantly, I stopped talking about moving back home and drew my son’s attention to the upsides of our new community. To my delight, Samuel also started to feel a bit more at home and included.
One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library. I gathered my courage and walked closer. “Hi, I’m Amy. This is Samuel. Can we join you guys ” I made sure that I looked approachable. The woman readily pulled up two chairs for us. It turned out we had a whole lot in common. Following that encounter, we visited each other’s home a million times. Before long, my family gradually found our way to be part of this river town. Suddenly a six-year-old boy rushed into my path because his ball had rolled away. As he saw me speeding towards him, his face turned white, and he stood rooted to the ground. Within a few seconds, both of us ran against each other and flew into the air. The boy landed on the ground with a loud bang. His left arm was cut by some small rocks and began to bleed heavily. I was too scared to say a word. The boy was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he received treatment. I was slightly injured as well.
Fortunately, his injuries were minor and not infected but I got severely lectured by my parents. I was banned from any dangerous sports. After that incident, I felt nothing but guilt and regret. Every time I recalled it, tears co
