Before leaving school, the kids in Class 4 were told they were going to have football lessons next week.
“Wow!” shouted Omar. “Real football! I bet I score ten goals!”
Back home he begged his mum to buy him a real football strip (彩条球衣), but was turned down. Their teacher Mr Hart only wanted them to have new shorts. Omar was not happy. That night he lay awake thinking. He was going to make sure his mum bought football shorts. He wanted proper white football shorts. Then he knew he could score lots of goals.
After breakfast the next day they set out to buy the new shorts. On the way they saw Matt and Ben from Class 4, who also lived in Lyon Street. They were kicking a ball about beside the road. When they noticed Omar, they invited him to join in, but Omar refused. He shouted back, “I’m off with my mum to buy new football shorts.” “We’ve got ours already,” Matt shouted back.
The market was very crowded. There were shoes and clothes for sale. One man was selling shorts. He was wearing a huge pair of animal shorts over his trousers. They had big green trees on with monkeys smiling at the top. The man stopped them, trying to persuade him to drop in and try on some shorts. Omar paid no attention to him and continued to search for a pair of real football shorts.
He pulled at his mum’s hand. They struggled through the crowds trying to find real football shorts. They found lots of shorts that were too big and a little white pair that was too small. When they did find a pair in Omar’s size they cost far too much money.
“We’ll just have to get the animal shorts,” said Mum. They went slowly back to the man selling animal shorts. They found the shorts had almost been sold out. Omar’s mum opened her purse and paid for the shorts.
Omar pulled a face. “I wish they were real football shorts,” he murmured.
“What matters in football is how to play, whatever you wear.” Omar’s mum bent down and gave him a hug, gently whispering to him.
That day, desperate Omar, in his animal shorts, was surprised to find most of his classmates wearing the same animal shorts.

Into the cave
Standing outside the cave entrance, Grandfather admired the green-carpeted hills of Guilin. “Next to heaven,” he said, “Guilin is most beautiful.”
“I would rather be anywhere else in China,” Lin thought.
Lin came here today only because of Grandfather, a stubborn and old-fashioned man, who insisted on using the guano, the waste matter of bats(蝙蝠), to fertilize(施肥) his crops. But he was too weak to do the whole job alone. Grandfather only had the ability to gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the basket, but he wanted to carry it home in the wooden cart, so he needed Lin a lot.
Lin hadn’t been in the cave since the 2-month-ago terrible day of the bats. On that day, as Lin had walked in the cave, a swarm of black bats had appeared out of nowhere, making him extremely terrified.
Grandfather took a shovel(铁铲) and flashlight(手电筒) from the cart. “Come inside with me ” he asked Lin. “Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather said. But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats.
“I dare not go in there now,” he told Grandfather.
“OK” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave with his own shovel and flashlight, he called over his shoulder to Lin, “I’ll be out in no time.”
Lin parked the cart and glanced at his shovel and flashlight inside it. He had used them back in the days when he always helped Grandfather. Now they only reminded him of his fear.
Time flew by very quickly before he came to know it. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “in no time” had turned into a long time. What happened Something had gone wrong Did he slip down and get hurt
Looking into the dark cave, he thought, “I can’t go in there”. Then he imagined Grandfather, hurt and alone.

I’m a talker—I have a habit of talking to every person I see—but that afternoon in March 2015, I sat beside my husband Andy on the 45-minute drive home from the Marcus Autism Center without saying a word. My two-and-a-half-year-old son Wesley had just been diagnosed(诊断) with autism spectrum disorder (自闭症谱系障碍).
I’d been given instructions and suggestions and told to sign up for classes, but I knew we could never afford any. Out of everything the specialists had said, the only word I could remember was socialization-key for Wesley to develop social skills. In the car, I tried hard to come up with ways to make his world more social. Then the strangest idea came to mind, so strange that I blurted (脱口而出) it out. “We need a dog!”
Andy looked at me as if I were crazy. “What are you talking about, Rachel You don’t ever really like dogs.” That was true. I had had bad experiences with dogs growing up. “And how are we going to afford a dog right now ” Yes, another big question. But somehow I couldn’t shake the idea.
A couple of weeks later, I was outside playing with Wesley, when a new neighbor walked over with a black curly-coated dog. When we were chatting, her medium-sized dog ran and jumped playfully between the boys. He was so gentle; he didn’t jump on people the way I’d seen a lot of dogs do. I watched, amazed. It was as if he knew exactly how careful to be with each of them.
“What breed (品种) is he ” I asked. “He’s an Aussiedoodle (贵宾澳牧),” She said proudly. Then she continued, “He was bred (培育) by a woman called Mary, who has three autistic (自闭症的) sons. She found that Aussiedoodles work perfectly as service dogs. I can give you her phone number if you want one.”

It was a warm spring morning. Five-year-old Mary was riding on a swing(秋千) outside the yard. When swinging, Mary was angrily thinking about her eleven-year-old brother, David. “How could he be so mean ” she asked herself, remembering how David had made a face and called her a “big baby” at the breakfast table. The swing carried her up so high that she could see for miles.
Mary’s red sweater flashed brightly in the morning sunlight. She then stopped thinking about her brother and started to sing a swinging song.
On a distant hill behind the swing, a huge bull(公牛) with long, sharp horns(角) watched the red sweater swinging back and forth in the sunlight. The bull had broken out of his ranch(牧场). It became angry and ready to attack anything that was moving. It made deep sounds. Then it lowered its big head and began running across the field toward the red sweater.
Meanwhile, David was in the yard, feeding the chickens. He looked out and saw his little sister on the swing. Then suddenly he saw the bull running across the field, heading straight for his sister. Knowing Mary was in danger, David shouted, “Look out behind you, Mary! Get off the swing! Run!” Mary didn’t hear him; she just kept singing and swinging. It wasn’t the candy he wanted. It was the skateboard (滑板). Daniel had been staring at it for weeks, every day on his way home from school, admiring it through the window of the skate shop on Market Street. It was a longboard — a serious skateboard, not meant for tricks or speed, but for long rides down hills, on busy roads, or all the way across town. This was a skateboard that could change Daniel’s life. No longer would his parents have to pick him up after school, or at the movies. The longboard would be able to take him home.
One day, he told his dad he wanted to buy the skateboard.
“Dad,” Daniel said. “It’s the world’s finest skateboard. It could change my life forever.”
“That’s great,” said Dad. “I’m all for kids having hobbies. But that’s an expensive little toy, and…”
“It’s not a toy!” Daniel felt himself about to lose his temper (脾气). But he collected himself. “It’s a whole new way of life. When you were my age, what was the thing you wanted more than anything else The thing you dreamed about ”
“A Vincent Black Shadow — the world’s finest motorcycle. A more beautiful piece of machinery has never been designed.”
“So yeah, this board is like the Vincent Black Shadow for the 21st Century. So you see why I have to have it.”
“You know what my dad told me when I asked for a Black Shadow ”
“What ”
“Nothing. I didn’t ask him, because I knew he’d think it was nothing more than an expensive toy. I went out, got a job, and started saving.”
“Man,” Daniel said, a bit disappointed. “I was afraid you’d say something like that.”
“You can do it, can’t you ”
Daniel never worked before, but now he decided to get a job to save money for the skateboard. He walked up and down Market Street looking for someplace to work. The pizzeria wasn’t hiring. The coffee shop said he was too young. The only store with a “HELP WANTED” sign was Orson’s Confectionaries. Mr Orson’s candy store.
Paragraph 1:
Daniel had heard kids talk about buying something in the candy store.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little uncomfortable, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I overslept and as a result, was a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The roads were already jammed with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.
My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact that I was late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a determined and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed an accident.
It all happened in an instant, as most accidents do. A car took a left turning without signaling and a school bus crashed into it heavily. A few cars behind the school bus hit the bus as they could not stop in time and soon it became a pile-up. The car was damaged badly while the school bus also had some damage. And the already crowded road became more jammed with vehicles, which came to a mess. We wanted to help the victims. My sister drove to a stop at the roadside not too far from the accident spot.
The scene that greeted us was terrible. I first rushed to the car. The driver, a lady, lay trapped behind the wheel, unable to move. Three schoolchildren were in the back seat, their faces white with fear. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding from the head and hands. They were conscious although too weak and frightened to realize what had happened. We called an ambulance and while waiting, we tried as much as possible to help the victims. As a result of our joint efforts, the driver and the children were moved to safety and taken care of.

Devon became the man of the house since his father passed away last year, but tonight he was a twelve-year old boy who wanted a puppy for his birthday, and his birthday was tomorrow.
“They say every boy should have a dog of his own, don’t you agree ”
I sighed, knowing what my answer would have to be. “I would love to get you a puppy, but puppies are expensive. They need food and shots and a license. We just can’t afford all that right now, honey.” I lowered my head so he wouldn’t see my tears.
He stood there for a moment. “That’s okay, Mom. I understand,” he whispered. “But some day, when things get better, can we get a puppy ” “Of course, Devon, I promise.” I forced myself to smile.
“When we get a puppy, I am going to name him Rusty.”
“Rusty That’s a fine name.”
The next morning, I gathered our recyclable bottles and cans which were worth five cents each. We drove to the nearby convenience store and sold them at a nearby store. Then we chose the two most delicious donuts with the money.
Devon grabbed the donut and took a huge bite. On the front sidewalk, he stopped so suddenly that I almost ran into him.
A puppy caught his eye. A young woman was parked just outside the door. Her face was wet with tears. The puppy curled up (蜷缩) in her lap with his nose resting on the driver’s door.
Devon rushed over to the car and giggled (咯咯笑) as he fed the rest of his donut to the puppy and was thanked with a wet puppy lick across the face.

Most mornings, the sun rose to greet the day and the bird sang its songs outside an upstairs window of the house. Inside the house Ollie and Noah would wake up. The brother and sister usually got along very well. They took turns nicely with the bathroom. They said “please” and “thank you at breakfast. They often sat together on the school bus. And after school they worked together happily on their special project — their own backyard house.
But one gray morning they didn’t get along well at all! Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was because the bird slept late. But whatever it was, they got into a big fight.
Noah opened her eyes and stretched. Then she sat up and let her legs dangle (垂悬) over the edge of her bed-right in Ollie’s face. She didn’t do it to be rude. It was just one of those things that happens with bunk beds (双层床).
But that morning Ollie was not in a very good mood.
“Noah!” he shouted. “Get your stupid feet out of my face!”
“My feet aren’t stupid, and they’re not in your face!” she shouted back
Before Ollie could answer, she skipped into the bathroom ahead of him. She took a very long time brushing her teeth, washing up, and combing her hair.
“You’d better come out of that bathroom!” shouted Ollie, banging on the door.
“Ollie,” said Mama, coming out of her bedroom, “you know better than to shout at your sister.”
“But she’s taking too long in the bathroom,” complained Ollie, “and she’s doing it on purpose!”
When Ollie raised his fist to bang on the door again, it opened and out came Noah, all dressed up.
“Good morning, Mama,” she said, as nice as you please.

Craig watched as his older sister Riley and friend Liz skated on the lake. When the game was over, Craig asked Riley what skating felt like.
“When I go really fast, I feel like I’m flying,” she said.
That’s silly, thought Craig. Flying is something birds do in the air, not something people do on ice Skates. Then he watched Riley go back out on the ice. She skated around and around the edge of the lake with increasing speed and soon she was going so fast that her arms looked like wings and her scarf like a long tail. Maybe skating really was like flying.
When Riley sat down to take her skates off, Craig said, “I wish I could fly.”
Riley didn’t say anything, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.
The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed (填塞) newspaper in them, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so that he could walk to the lake.
Riley and Liz went with him. They carried a wooden chair. When they got to the lake. Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice. Then she put his hands on the back of the chair.
“Hang on to this and you won’t fall,” said Riley. “Just push it along in front of you, OK ”
Craig smiled. “OK.” He held on to the chair and kept himself balanced. Riley and Liz cheered him on as he started to move forward. Craig tried to skate like his sister but when he let go of the chair, he just fell. So he grabbed on to the chair again and moved on little by little. This wasn’t like flying at all. It was like being a snail (蜗牛).
“How’s it going ” Riley finally asked. Craig looked upset. “What’s wrong ” Riley asked.

4.David ran across the chicken yard, rushing toward his sister. He ran faster than he had ever run before. Catching one of the ropes, David made the swing stop, pulling his sister sideways to the ground only a second before the angry bull attacked the place where Mary had been. Realizing the danger, Mary let out of a terrified yell. The bull stopped, still making deep sounds. Then it faced the siblings and lowered its head to launch another attack.
Seeing this, David immediately pulled Mary’s red sweater off. Then he threw the sweater as far away as he could. The bull followed it, instead of continuing running towards them. Daniel had heard kids talk about buying something in the candy store. The idea of being surrounded by candies all day seemed appealing. He knew that working at Orson’s Confectionaries might not directly bring him closer to his dream skateboard, but he realized that it could be a stepping stone towards achieving his goal. Daniel walked into the candy store and said politely, “Excuse me, sir, are you still looking for someone to work here ” Mr. Orson smiled warmly, “Yes, indeed! What’s your name ” “I’m Daniel, sir,” he replied. “I’ve been saving up for a skateboard, and I thought working here could be a great opportunity for me to earn some money.”
Paragraph 2:
“A lot of kids do odd jobs to get what they want,” smiled Mr Orson. “Maybe you’ll discover some other sweet surprises along the way.” Hearing this, Daniel felt a surge of excitement and eagerly started his first day at work. As time went on, Daniel found joy and began to love interacting with customers, sharing recommendations and witnessing their delight. Days turned into weeks, and Daniel’s savings jar began to fill up steadily. One sunny afternoon, with his hard-earned cash in hand, Daniel walked into the skate shop. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Then I rushed to the school bus filled with children’s cries. Inside were the frightened schoolchildren. Many of them appeared to suffer from minor cuts and bruises on their arms and bodies in the crash. The children were crying and screaming for their parents. It was really fortunate that nobody was badly hurt. By then a few adults entered the bus and together we instructed the children to come out of the bus slowly. We managed to calm them down. Soon, the doctors in an ambulance came to the scene.
After the ambulance had left, two policemen asked me about the accident. They were taking statements from eyewitnesses. My sister and I gave a full account to the police of what had happened. As a matter of fact, it could have been prevented if the drivers had been more careful. Of course I was late for school, but I knew what I should do to avoid that was set off earlier. The accident also taught us an important lesson we should always obey the traffic rules and keep safety in mind.

9.
Ollie and Noah kept on being mean to each other that day. They didn’t say “please” and “thank you” at breakfast, because they weren’t speaking to each other. And they didn’t sit together on the school bus. Noah sat in the front and Ollie in the back. That afternoon they made a line down the middle of their backyard house to show which half was whose. Later they even took back the things they usually shared. So angry were the brother and sister that they began shouting at each other even louder than before, totally forgetting they weren’t speaking.
“I’ve had quite enough of this foolish fighting,” said Mama seriously. “How on earth did you get into a fight ” inquired Mama. The kids tried to remember, but they couldn’t. Mama took them into her lap and shared, “Everybody gets into an argument once in a while — even those who love each other very much. We get angry, even call each other names and say things we really don’t mean — and after a while it’s over.” So Ollie and Noah hugged, made up, and got along just beautifully until the next time, anyway.
