Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
When Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770) wrote this poem, he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good indeed, as it “knows” the right time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to know that it should come in time for the farmer’s busy plowing (农耕) season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night. Unlike the thunder (雷) and lightning of summer storms, the quiet spring rain makes its contributions (贡献) without being known.
In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy, showing that there will be enough rain during the night. Then the poet imagines: tomorrow morning, all of the flowers in the city will bloom (盛开) after the rain.

It was only after her death from disease on May 15, 1886 that Emily Dickinson received recognition for her poetic achievement. Some of her works appeared in 1890, but it was not until Thomas H. Johnson released all her poetry in 1995 that made her works famous. He published 1,775 of her poems in 1955 in a volume named The Poems of Emily Dickinson.
Emily was born in America in 1830. Her family was well known in the community for their contribution to politics and education. Emily lived most of her life with her grandfather who was famous for having founded and Amherst Academy in 1814 and later Amherst College in 1821.
Emily led a reclusive(隐居的)life, but her childhood was a happy one. She had the special right of being educated at some of the most outstanding women schools in her time and devoted herself to reading all kinds of books.
It was during her college years that Emily started writing. Some of her poems were published with the help of her friends. However, when she tried having her poems published for the first time, she failed and her poems were refused by a magazine. This led Emily to believe that the public would never care for her works, and then she never attempted to have any of her works published again. After the Civil War, Emily left from society and had little contact outside of Amherst.
Emily was very concerned with the subject of nature. Her writings are complex, and for many years people have searched for romantic inspiration, but have not yet understood her works. What is clear, however, is that her works don’t just simply describe something in ways of a narrative(叙事的)style.
Without doubt, Emily’s works have greatly influenced and continue to influence modern society. In her time, her writing style was unique(独一无二的)given that it included the use of dashes and capitalized nouns. None of her works rhymed, and she used unusual comparisons when referring to events and situations. This
nontraditional method of writing has made her one of the most innovative(创新的)poets of the 19th century.

In ancient times, there were no books, and people passed on their knowledge by telling stories. The earliest forms of the book were made in Egypt around 3,000 BC. These early scrolls (卷轴), made from animal skins, were used to record stories, laws and history. Later, people learned how to write and make paper. They wrote each word by hand. It took a long time to write just one book, making them rare and expensive.
In the 15th century, the invention of the printing press appeared and changed the book-making business and even the world. This made it possible to print books quickly. Even common people could buy and read books.

They are quickly changing people’s reading habits. It is easier for people to buy and sell books online and carry the whole library in their pockets. Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;

In her time, her writing style was unique(独一无二的)given that it included the use of dashes and capitalized nouns.
