Qomolangma—the Most
Dangerous Mountain in the World
One of the world's most dangerous sports is mountain climbing, and one of the most popular places for this is the Himalayas. The Himalayas run along the southwestern part of China. Of all the mountains, Qomolangma rises the highest and is the most famous. It is 8,848.86 meters high and so is very dangerous to climb. Thick clouds cover the top and snow can fall very hard. Even more serious difficulties include freezing weather conditions and heavy storms. It is also very hard to take in air as you get near the top.

Junko was born in 1939 and grew up in a small town in Japan. During her childhood, she was thin and weak. At the age of 10, Junko went on a school trip. The students climbed two mountains, and Junko loved it. She could climb in her own time and ability.
After Junko graduated from university in 1962, she joined several climbing clubs. But they had mostly men members. Some even refused(拒绝) to climb with a woman. They thought women should stay at home only. In 1965, Junko married a
well-known Japanese climber. Over the years, they
climbed all the highest mountains of Japan.

love for climbing
At the same time Junko started a woman's climbing club. By 1972, she was chosen to lead a team of women to climb Qomolangma. It took three years for the 15 women to train and raise money for their climb. Finally in 1975, the team went to climb the mountain. They found nine guides(向导) to help them climb up the mountain. Everything went well until the morning of May 4. Suddenly a huge amount(大量) of snow and ice fell on them. Junko and some others were buried(被埋) in the snow. One guide saved Junko. She rushed to help others. Everyone was alive but they all hurt badly, including Junko. However, the team decided to continue their climb. About two weeks later, on May 16, Junko reached the top of Qomolangma. She was the first woman to stand on top of the highest mountain in the world.
