 Tu Youyou was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province on 30th December
1930. She is a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist. 
 In 1955, she graduated from Peking University. After graduation, she
was trained in traditional Chinese medicine for two and a half years and she has
been working in China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing. In
1972, she succeeded in discovering artemisinin, and it saved millions of lives.
For her work, Tu received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She
is the first Chinese woman to win this prize.

At the end of May, events were held in Nanjing and Taicang, to memorise
the 110th anniversary(纪念日) of the birth of physicist Chien shiung Wu.
Compared with Marie Curie, Chien shiung Wu is not a well known name,
but she was one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.
Wu was born on May 31, 1912, in Taicang. Wu Zhongyi, her father,
built a school for girls and helped girls to get the same education as boys. He had
the greatest influence(影响) on Chien shiung Wu’s life.
Wu went to the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 24. There she
met her husband Luke Chia Liu Yuan and they got married in 1942 after she
completed the doctor’s degree.
“She was always cautious in experiments, spending a great deal of time
checking instruments. She didn’t start experiments until she fully understood the
instruments,” said Samuel Chao Chung Ting, an American physicist, in a
video for the anniversary events on May 31.
In 1973, Wu finally returned to China for the first time after she left
homeland for 37 years. In the following years, she came back nine times,
visiting her home town, giving speeches and reports at universities about the
latest scientific development.
Wu lived a simple life. However, she set up a scholarship at Nanjing
University to reward students who were excellent in physics in 1986. Six years
later, she built Chien shiung Wu Library there.
On Feb. 16, 1997, Wu died in the US. The author of her biography, wrote
the epitaph(墓志铭) for her. It says, “She was an excellent world citizen,
and was forever Chinese.”

Just a few days after his 18th birthday, Beijing 2022 gold medal winner Su
Yiming received a surprise gift—a letter from the President.
In the letter, the President expressed his congratulations to Su and other
sportsmen in ice and snow sports for their great achievements at the Beijing Winter
Olympics, hoping what they had achieved would encourage young Chinese to
aim(立目标) high.
When Su first stepped onto a snowboard at the age of four, a future as a
world class sportsman seemed to be “a dream too big” for him. Little did he
know that he would not only compete for his country but also take home gold. With
the great excitement of winning an Olympic gold medal still fresh in his mind, Su
wrote a letter to the President, telling him how lucky he felt to have made his
dream come true.
Su still remembers what the President wrote in the reply, “The new era is
