三、阅读理解
What do you know about William Shakespeare? Have you ever read any of
his works? Do you think teenagers should spend time trying to understand
Shakespeare’s works? Why or why not?
Yes! —Linda
Shakespeare is regarded as one of the best writers in history. He produced
many great works. While we enjoy these stories, we can learn many things.
First, Shakespeare teaches us history. Of course, this was not the writer’s
intention. However, Shakespeare liked to talk about his own society in his plays.
Through the reading of his works, we can find out what was going on when he
was alive.
▲ . According to the Oxford English Dictionary, words like “rival”
and “hostile” all first appeared in Shakespeare’s plays. We can get a better
understanding of the English language through these works.
Moreover, few writers in history have been able to describe the human
condition as well as Shakespeare had. By exploring different human conditions,
we can learn how to relate to one another better.
In conclusion, I think schools should teach Shakespeare.
No! —Louis
I don’t think schools should teach Shakespeare. The biggest reason is that it is
not useful. Let’s be honest: When do you need to use Shakespeare outside of
school?
Many of my classmates consider studying Shakespeare to be a waste of time. If
we didn’t study Shakespeare, we could spend more time learning things that are
more useful.
In addition, Shakespeare is too boring. The stories don’t deal with modern
problems. The language is old. It is difficult for students to understand it. Some
young people will lose interest in literature all together if they are required to study
Shakespeare.
( B )1. Which of the following sentences can be put in the “ ▲ ” in
paragraph 4?
A. Shakespeare also teaches us the ways of learning English
B. Shakespeare also helped create thousands of English words
C. And the words in Shakespeare’s works are easy to understand
D. And Shakespeare teaches us how to express ourselves in English
B
( A )2. Louis thinks schools shouldn’t teach Shakespeare mainly
because .
A. Shakespeare is seldom used outside of school
B. some stories in Shakespeare’s works are not real
C. stories in Shakespeare’s works don’t deal with modern problems
D. the language in Shakespeare’s works is difficult for students to understand
A
( D )3. According to the article, Linda and Louis are mainly talking
about .
A. why Shakespeare’s works are great
B. what Shakespeare’s works are about
C. how Shakespeare’s works influence people’s life

三、阅读理解
On June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died at the age of 58. The next day,
people read in The New York Times: “Death of the Great Novelist... Mourned
(哀悼) by the People of Two Continents(大洲).”
The newspaper was not overstating the fame of Dickens. Even today, this
British novelist is still loved by readers all over the world. Dickens created some of
the greatest works in English literature(文学). You must have heard of or even
read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two
Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897,
there have been more than 300 film and television adaptations of Dickens’s novels.
A Christmas Carol alone has had nearly 50.
Natalie McKnight is an American literature expert who studies Dickens and his
novels. She explains why Dickens has been so popular. One important reason, she
says, is that Dickens wrote from his heart. Few of writers worked as hard as
Dickens. He tried hard to produce emotional effects(情感效果) among his
readers. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader
think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy
his works that make them laugh out loud, cry and think.
Dickens wrote lots of novels that still interest people today. He used his pen to
fight social unfairness and gave voice to the poor. In his works, he paid special
attention to the “little man” at the bottom of society in the UK. Readers always
enjoy seeing poor people rise(起义) and succeed.
This June marked the 153rd year of Dickens’s death. It’s another chance to
remember this great writer. Will you read (or re read) some of his most famous
works?

第1—3题。
A. What’s a quick way to understand the characters?
B. How can I express my ideas and feelings in a lively way?
C. What’s the first thing I have to do if I want to write a play?
D. What should I do if I can’t find a proper word to describe something?
Holly King Mand is the nation’s favourite English teacher. Thousands of students
join her free online lessons. She enjoys both reading Shakespeare’s plays and
helping her students to learn how to write. Now she is answering her students’
questions and offering them some advice.
From David: 1
Tip 1 Use clever names
Well, quite often Shakespeare gives information about what a character is
like through their names. For example, lovestruck Romeo’s name means a
person being romantic and kind. Benvolio can be nice and friendly. Now think
what you can call a character who is angry all the time?
A
From Sarah: 2
Tip 2 Try metaphors(暗喻)
Shakespeare was a fan of metaphors. A metaphor is a way of comparing one
thing with something else to show ideas, feelings, places and more. In the play
As You Like It, he writes, “All the world is a stage(舞台) and all the men
and women only players.” What do you think he means by comparing the world
to a stage?
B
From Steven: 3
Tip 3 Make up words
Eyeball. Lonely. Unreal. All these words were made up by Shakespeare. If
you have an idea that you can’t think of a word for, be like Shakespeare and
invent your own. If you want to create words that mean something and may stand
the test of time, try creating words like this: breakfast+lunch=brunch. And
you can start with making up words for everyday things in your home.
Do you want to write like Shakespeare? Put your question here, or write to
Holly at hollysclass@.
D
