In the 1970s, a new supermarket selling LPs arrived in my hometown and I began devoting my pocket money to acquiring records. I swiftly developed an affection for Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, harboring dreams of performing that music myself. Despite the absence of a piano at home, there was one at my grandmother’s care home, where I learned to play Beethoven by ear, with pigeons cooing and farmers working in the fields. It was truly magical.
Entering the Royal Academy of Arts at 16 marked the beginning of my artistic journey. In my 30s, I took another significant step in life — marriage. My wife worked at Elephants World, a reserve dedicated to the care of rescued domestic elephants. These elephants have worked for humans all their life and many are blind or disabled from being treated badly, so I wanted to make the effort to carry something heavy myself. For my 50th birthday, my wife successfully persuaded the manager to allow us to bring a piano into the reserve, bringing music to the elephants’ lives.
Initially, when I started playing, it was hard to hear the piano above the sounds of nature and the elephants chewing grass. However, everything changed when a blind elephant ceased eating and tuned into my playing. It struck me that this elephant, trapped in a world of darkness, had a profound love for music. From that moment on, there was no longer any concern about disturbing their peace. We occasionally film these performances, and now, we proudly have nearly 700,000 YouTube subscribers.
I continue to play for these elephants that run freely in the reserve, despite the constant potential danger. Surprisingly, it’s the moody male elephants who show the most fascination with the music. I firmly believe it has a calming effect. These elephants’ breathing actually slows down when I play, which tells me they are relaxed and happy. I’ve even witnessed elephants seemingly dancing to Beethoven’s tunes. With their exceptional hearing and the ability to sense vibrations (震动) through their feet, I am convinced that elephants grasp the language of human expression. This serves as a powerful illustration that music serves as a universal language, connecting us all.

A new device known as Shark Guard is being trialed which gives off a pulse to protect sharks and rays from fishing hooks (鱼钩). The data so far suggests that it has been very effective in reducing the number of sharks and stingrays caught by commercial fishing equipment.
Commercial fishing is known to threaten sharks and rays worldwide. Research has found that 24 per cent of the average monthly space used by sharks around the world falls under the footprint of distant long line fisheries. This is when hooks hang near the surface to catch fish like tuna and swordfish. A quarter of shark habitats are within active fishing zones.
It is estimated that over 20,000,000 sharks are caught as bycatch every year. Stingrays are also frequently caught as bycatch. “Bycatch” refers to unwanted fish and marine creatures caught by commercial fishing equipment, and is typically discarded (丢弃) overboard either dead or dying.
Shark Guard was designed by marine scientists to protect sharks and rays from fishing equipment. It is a small battery-powered device that can be fastened on the line next to a baited hook and gives off a short pulse every two seconds.
Study found that the device reduced the number of blue sharks caught in a French long line tuna fishery in the Mediterranean by 91 per cent, and stingrays by 71 per cent. These are promising numbers, although Dr. Phil Doherty, lead author of the study, said that Shark Guard should “be designed on a case-by-case basis to ensure it’s fit for purpose.”
28. What is the new device used to do
A. Stop sharks being caught. B. Reduce the number of sharks.
C. Confirm a scientific guess. D. Prevent commercial hunting.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The places fishing hooks hang. B. The range of commercial fishing.
C. The benefits of protecting sharks. D. The harm of commercial fishing.
30. What does Phil Doherty think of the device
A. It needs improving. B. It is ineffective.
C. It is promising. D. It is perfectly designed.
31. What is the text
A. A diary entry. B. A news report. C. A fantasy story. D. A book review.

Education today really isn’t that much different from what it was a hundred years ago. It’s still classrooms full of students all learning the same thing at the same pace from teachers who spend thirty years teaching more or less the same thing.
However, the world that the next generation will grow up in will be different from anything we have seen. It will be a world filled with artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, automation, virtual reality, personalized medicine, self-driving cars, and people on Mars; a world where people might not even have jobs and where society itself may be arranged in fundamentally different ways. How are we supposed to know how to prepare them to succeed in a world that we cannot predict
It starts by rethinking what a school is. The role of school should no longer be to fill heads with information, rather it should be a place that inspires students to be curious about the world they live in. Don’t hold back that curiosity by making them spend their childhoods preparing for one test after another.
The ability to adapt and learn something new should be valued above all else. Gone are the days when you pick a profession and just do that one thing for the rest of your life. People will need to know how to learn something new multiple times over in their lives because our knowledge of the world and who we are is progressing incredibly quickly. If the last time you learned anything new was when you were in school then you will be missing out on the new ways of understanding the world.
In addition, education should give people an understanding that the world is not divided up into different subjects. All fields of knowledge bleed into each other and none can be fully understood in isolation (孤立).
Much of this may seem idealistic or unrealistic, but change is needed if we are going to figure out how to live in the future.
32. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To present the complexity of education.
B. To stress the importance of education.
C. To describe what education used to be like.
D. To suggest education is far behind the times.
33. What should be the role of school
A To inspire students’ curiosity.
B. To guarantee happy childhood.
C. To provide sufficient information.
D. To prepare students for a lifelong profession.
34 What will the author agree
A. One should learn as much as he can at school.
B. Schools should teach new ways to change the world.
C. Students’ ability to adapt should be the priority of education.
D. School subjects reflect how the world is divided into different fields.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Standards Tests Remove Students’ Curiosity
B. Gone Are the Days of Traditional School Education
C. It’s Time to Change How We Educate Our Children
D. Change in Education Is Too Idealistic and Unrealistic

Animals and plants can teach humans a lot about design and engineering. As a result, many engineers, scientists, and designers spend time studying them. When they have a problem, nature often has the answer. This science 56 (call) biomimetics. Bio means“living things”and mimetics means “copying”. It involves 57 (draw) inspiration from nature's designs and processes 58 (solve) human problems or improve technology.
For example, engineers in Canada are studying whale flippers (鳍) because they move so effectively through water. The engineers believe the shape can improve the movement of wind turbines (涡轮机). Similarly, engineers at Mercedes Benz in Germany are using the shape of the boxfish 59 one of their new cars because it makes the car 60 (fast) and more fuel efficient.
Velcro (粘扣) is 61 (probable) the most famous example of biomimetics. Most people have some Velcro on 62 item of clothing. It was invented by the Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1948.He was walking in the countryside 63 he pulled a burr (毛刺)off his trousers. He noticed how well the burr stuck to his clothes so he studied its design. The result was Velcro, which became an 64 (afford) alternative to the traditional zipper.
In conclusion, biomimetics not only has helped to design our world but promises many more 65 (possibility).Unfortunately, they might take a long time to develop. This isn't really surprising : it took nature millions of years to design its animals and plants.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was driving on the road on a hot day, feeling my back sweating as my air conditioner of the car was broken. A boy, looking exhausted ran quickly towards me, eager to sell his coconuts. He looked like he was only about 12 years old and his skin was dark. Judging from his appearance, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. “Coconut, 20 naira each.” He said in a low voice. I felt so thirty, so I didn’t bargain with him and bought one. I gave him 50 naira. He didn’t have the change, so I asked him not to worry. He said thanks and passed me another, smiling and showing a row of perfect teeth.
Another couple of weeks later, I met him again at the same place. I had learned more about the poor community where it was not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the hot sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantages we had been afforded and the responsibilities it brought to us.
I stopped and rolled down the window. He had a couple of coconuts, which were so heavy to carry that he had to sit in the corner. “What’s wrong Why not go to school ” I said. “I... I haven’t got enough money to get a textbook.” I took out two new 500-naira bills from my pocket. “Is that going to work ” I said. He glanced nervously about before he accepted them. A thousand naira is a great deal for a boy whose family is likely to earn five thousand naira or less every year. “Thank you very much sir,” he said, with tears rolling down his cheeks. “Many thanks!”
When I was on my way home, I was thinking about whether or not my little friend was really using that money for school books. What if I was taken in Then I thought about why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better It occurred to me afterwards that I did not know his name or the least bit about him, and it never occurred to me to ask him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One afternoon in September, I went to the poor community again.
