Frederick Banting hated school. Having grown up on a farm near Alliston, Ontario, Fred was a good worker but felt uncomfortable and unaccepted in a town school. After graduation, he began studies to become a minister. When that did not go well, he changed his goal to medicine. World War I arrived, and the great need for field medics (救护人员) resulted in the early graduation of Fred. After the war, the young Canadian doctor returned home to set up his practice. Just then he began to focus on articles on diabetes (糖尿病), a disease that had claimed the life of a neighbour’s child.
To solve the problem of this disease, Fred approached Dr. J. J. R. Macleod at the University of Toronto and eventually convinced Dr. Macleod to support him. In 1920, Fred happily entered a poorly equipped laboratory and was given a young assistant named Charles Best. Fred and Charles worked day and night, but early results in producing the hormone (激素) preparation they called insulin (胰岛素) were discouraging. Many of the animals they treated died. Finally one animal survived for several weeks. The team appeared to be finally getting somewhere, and it was time to move on to human subjects. Before treating human patients, however, Fred and Charles tested the safety of their insulin each other. Their tests were a triumph.
The first patient to be treated was a fourteen-year-old boy named Leonard. The year was 1921. The poor boy weighed only seventy-five pounds, and he was barely alive. But the new insulin treatment administered by Fred and Charles was a great success. Leonard gained weight, and his health dramatically improved.
In 1923, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded jointly to Canadian doctors Frederick Banting and J. J. R. Macleod. Fred could have made himself a millionaire with his discovery. Instead, he sold his patent for the production of insulin to the University of Toronto-for one dollar-so that the drug could be marketed cheaply and thousands of lives could be saved and improved. Thanks to Fred, diabetics are able to live normal lives where before it was impossible.

If you grew up in a household that had its fair share of book shelves, it might say something positive about your personally now that you're all grown up.
This new study found that people who grew up in book filled homes have higher reading, math, and technological skills. The researchers analyzed data featuring 160,000 adults (ages 25 to 65) across 31 nations. All participants were asked how many books there were in their home when they were 16 years old. They chose from a series of alternatives ranging from “10 or less” to “more than 500.”
If a household held at least 80 books, then participants went on to display the average rate of literacy and numeracy (认字和计算). The rate of literacy continued to increase in parallel to the number of books a household contained until the rate didn't increase from 350 books onwards. Furthermore, young teenagers who grew up around books were shown to have the same levels of literacy and numeracy as university graduates who had only grown up around a few books.
Literacy was clarified as “the ability to read effectively to participate in society and achieve personal goals.” Participants took tests that “captured” a range of basic through advanced comprehension skills, from reading brief texts for a single piece of information to synthesizing information from complex texts. Numeracy tests measured the “ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life,” while IT-related tests “assessed the ability to, use digital. technology to communicate with others, as well as to gather, analyze, and synthesize information.”
The results suggest those books made a long-term difference. “Growing up with home libraries improves adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits from parental education or one’s own educational attainment, “the researchers report. Not surprisingly, the biggest effect was on reading ability. “The total effects of home library size on literacy are large everywhere,” the researchers report.
28. What can we learn from the new study
A. All participants need to have ten to more than 500 books at home.
B. Those reading a lot are more competent than university graduates.
C. One’s literacy and numeracy are finally shaped at the age of 16.
D. Homes filled with books do much benefit to one’s growth.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The benefit of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
B. The relation between literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
C. The measurement of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
D. The difference between literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
30. According to the text, books influence one’s_________ most.
A. parental education. B. reading ability.
C. calculating ability. D. occupational attainment.
31. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To clarify the effect of home library size on one's adult skills.
B. To describe the importance of receiving good education.
C. To explain the necessity of acquiring literacy and numeracy.
D. To introduce methods of improving one's literacy and numeracy.

We are familiar with the unpleasant results of poor sleep. We may feel tired, anxious and bad-tempered, and everything gets a bit harder to do. But sleeplessness also impairs (损害) parts of the brain that affect our social lives and abilities to relate to other people, according to research by neuroscientist Eti Ben Simon.
In the first study, Simon and his colleagues designed a task where participants would face each other, and walk toward each other. The participant would decide when someone got too close, and they would measure that distance. Consistently, when people were sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的), they preferred others to be farther away.
In a recent study, they asked participants to think about different individuals while their brain activity was being recorded in an FMRI scanner. Then they answered a questionnaire (about daily acts) that explored how likely they were to help others. They found that sleep-deprived people were significantly less likely to want to help others.
They also looked at a database of charitable donations and compared the week of daylight saving time—when people lose, on average, an hour of sleep—to other weeks of the year. In 15 years’ worth of data, they kept seeing that on that week, the amount people donate is reduced by about 10 percent.
Other researchers are looking at similar questions. A colleague published a study that found doctors prescribe (开处方) fewer painkillers during a night shift than a day shift, and that was accompanied by reduced sympathy for their patients.
They’ve found that sleep deprivation reduces activity in what’s known as the theory of mind network in the brain. These are areas that help us think about other people. The larger the impairment, the less they wanted to help other people.
It’s not always easy to restore good sleep. But once we prioritize it, we can really help shift symptoms, mood, anxiety and even the desire to be kind to other people.
32. What can be inferred from the first study
A. Distance is a key factor in social communication.
B. Participants tend to keep far away from strangers.
C. People become more talkative because of sleep loss.
D. Lack of sleep makes people less interested in social interaction.
33. Which question might be included in the questionnaire
A. How did you sleep last night
B. Will you keep the door open for others
C. Who will you turn to when in sleep trouble
D. Do you find it hard to focus after sleeplessness
34. Why does the author mention “doctors” in paragraph 5
A. To give a warning. B. To describe a phenomenon.
C. To present an opposite idea. D. To provide more evidence.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Give a Hand to Others in Need.
B. Lack of Sleep Becomes Universal.
C. Sleep-Deprived People Are Selfish.
D. A Sound Sleep Does Good to Health.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loves swimming. So when the swim season began, I cut a deal with her. She would practice three times a week and try really hard. I wouldn’t make her compete in the swim meets. Elizabeth does not like swim meets. She gets horribly nervous but not because she wants to win. She doesn’t care if she wins.
Recently, Elizabeth’s team announced a special swim night: Members 11 and older would swim a timed 50 meters relay. It wasn’t exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members. That was my view. Elizabeth argued that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.
When the day of the special swim night arrived Elizabeth was nervous. She was the youngest person and shorter by at least a foot than most of the other kids. She panicked when it was time for the T-shirt relay. The relay works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt, a pair of socks and a swim cap; swims 50 meters; and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
Then it was Elizabeth’s turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn’t wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, Elizabeth was in the lead. Suddenly, somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth's socks had fallen off and was floating (漂) in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth’s team, “or you will be disqualified.”

Achievement Expo of China Aerospace
Today’s trip to the City Museum is really a memorable experience and this will be engraved in my mind forever.
All senior 3 students visited an exhibition themed on “Achievements of China Aerospace”. First, we attended informative lectures and watched extremely exciting videos about launching rockets, which allowed us to get deeper insights into China Aerospace. Then came the highlight, experiencing thrilling and funny spacewalks in almost zero gravity.
Amazed by the outstanding achievements and touched by the spirit of China Aerospace experts, I’ll apply myself to study so that I can make contributions to our country like them one day.
六、读后续写(25*1=25):
Everybody on her team started screaming, “Elizabeth!Get the sock!” However, she couldn’t hear them.It was time for desperate measures. A girl on my daughter’s team jumped in the pool, grabbed the sock, and swam after Elizabeth. “You have to put the sock on,” the girl screamed. The girl in lane two was about to pass Elizabeth. With the sock finally on, Elizabeth swam her heart out for the last 15 meters. It was close. But Elizabeth beat the other girl to the wall for the victory.
On the ride home, she shared her moment of winning again and again. She talked about how scared she was when someone grabbed her foot and how funny it was when she came to the finish and how great the night was.She told me that if the T-shirt relay was an Olympic event—and she is quite sure it should be—her team would win the gold medal. I told her that in my professional opinion, she was absolutely right.
