Skai Nzeuton,16,is a high schooler in New York.He started the Food Security Club in 2022 after seeing the bad influence of the COVID-19.Nzeuton noticed the number of meals left behind in the school dining hall and decided not to let these foods get wasted.
“I saw some people asking for food in the street every day,and I felt really bad not being able to help them,not having money because I am a student.At the same time,I saw tons of food waste with perfectly good food being thrown away at school,”said Nzeuton during an interview.
Nzeuton first got the idea from a history teacher who advised him to work with community fridges,a public space that houses many kinds of“take what you need”foods,such as bread,milk and vegetables.
Nzeuton's club began its first donation(捐赠)at the Loisaida Community Fridge,and since then,has increased up to 50 student members traveling across the city handing out up to3,000 pounds of food from Stuyvesant High School.
“It's about giving away these fresh foods because poor families usually can't afford these foods,so we're not only feeding the families but promoting(提倡)a healthy life,”said 18-year-old Stuyvesant student named Ben Pan.These Stuyvesant students wish to lead by example,encouraging other people to do the same.
