Nickenson Chery began at Florida National University(FNU)in 2008 as a radiology major. Midway through his career, Nickenson switched to Health Services Administration after realizing he’d prefer the medical field. But the career change came with stress, “I spent entire nights awake studying and doing homework. I’d consistently go to bed at 2 or 3 a. m., only to wake up early the next day and start over.” The hard work eventually paid off as Nickenson graduated from FNU with his Bachelor’s Degree in 2015.
When asked about his experience and impression of his time at FNU, he said, “I truly loved FNU. It was a great experience. I always felt at home and part of a family. If you need any help, professors and staff are always available. They give you all the tools necessary to get your work done and succeed. If it wasn’t for FNU, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ll always recommend FNU to anyone looking for a great education, regardless of what they want to study.”
Nickenson’s journey was just beginning, taking a long road that led him across the country searching for the perfect career. It started here in South Florida, serving as an intern(实习医生)at Aventura Hospital. When that didn’t lead to a long-term option, he moved to Las Vegas for a short amount of time, only to leave there as well and end up in his current home, Boston. Nickenson Chery now works at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, proving that whatever the struggles one faces perseverance and hard work will lead you to success.
Nickenson left these words to current students at FNU, “You have to know where you’re going. Don’t take anything for granted. If it wasn’t for FNU that taught me a lot of stuff in and out of the classroom, I would’ve never gotten this position. I have a degree from FNU; nothing can stop me.”
24. What’s Nickenson’s impression of FNU
A. Joyful and peaceful. B. Supportive and loving.
C. Rewarding but uncomfortable. D. Creative but disappointing.
25. What happened to Nickenson after his graduation
A. He changed jobs until finding a suitable one.
B. He faced criticism while working at FNU.
C. He returned to FNU for further studies.

B. He advises students at FNU be careful when making choices.
C. He wishes students at FNU to work hard and support themselves.
D. He recommends students at FNU have clear goals and be grateful.
27. What can we learn from Nickenson’s story
A. It’s never too late to learn. B. It pays to put theory into practice.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.

As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of the cultivated(培育的)meat from Aleph Farms and others are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes(替代品), none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, an Israel i food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. And the end product is very healthy. The company also says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remil k was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure(粪肥)and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.
28. What does the underlined word soaring in Para. 1 mean
A. Recovering. B. Disappearing. C. Declining. D. Increasing.
29. What is Wolff’s attitude to Remilk
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Opposed. D. Unconcerned.
30. How does the writer explain the advantage of Remilk in the last paragraph
A. By giving a definition. B. By presenting the process.
C. By making comparison. D. By giving examples.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Healthier Milk, Rising Popularity B. Saving Endangered Animals
C. Fresher Milk, Better Taste D. Making Milk Without Cows
D
Artificial intelligence(AI)is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法)that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声)in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network and Seismology Research(TexNet).“It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70%accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what move science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32. How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
B. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
C. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
D. By identifying data from the satellites.
33. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
B. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
C. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
34. What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
D. Conducting tests in different locations.
35. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Pioneering and promising. B. Potential and economical.
C. Stable but outdated. D. Effective but costly.

When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch very obvious scar on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not notice it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”
It never occurred to me that something like this would happen to my son years later. Sending a child off to college can certainly be stressful for concerned parents. It was 2018 that my son went off to college. He rarely contacted us. I couldn’t help asking about other aspects, which sometimes made him complain that I didn’t treat him as an adult.
To be honest, my son is excellent. Some of my friends always tell me that they admire my son’s characters and they hope their sons could have some of them.
Unexpectedly, it was 4 o’clock in the morning in 2020, when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just brought in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for an aircraft and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was serious.
The doctor described the reason, which caused the burns. At 6 am, my son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they lit the charcoal, it burst into flames because they had sprayed(喷洒)too much gasoline. The flames caught my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
Fortunately, one of the boys who was quick-minded grasped my son and rolled him on the grass. While it saved his life, it failed to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars.
After he recovered from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery for 6 months because it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking(起皱)and wrinkling.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily(暂时地).So I told him about Nancy’s childhood.

M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. (Text 10)
Hello, everybody. Today, I’d like to talk about running. We all know that it’s free, and requires no equipment and the scenery on the road can be attractive—it’s no wonder that running is among the world’s most popular sports. The number of runners in Australia has doubled from 2006 to 2014. Now more than 1.35million Australians run for fun and exercise. Research has found running helps to reduce the risk of being overweight, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. However, you don’t have to run fast or far to get the benefits. We found that running just for about 50 minutes a week is OK. This is good news for those who don’t have much time on their hands for exercise. But it shouldn’t discourage those who enjoy running longer and more often. We found that running every two days or four hours a week is also beneficial to health. But running too fast is not necessarily more beneficial. We found the best benefits for running at any speed between 8 and 13 km/h. It might be that running at your own “most comfortable speed” is the best for your health.

由文章第三段“Nickenson’s journey was just beginning, taking a long road that led him across the country searching for the perfect career. It started here in South Florida, serving as an intern(实习医生)at Aventura Hospital. When that didn’t lead to a long-term option, he moved to Las Vegas for a short amount of time, only to leave there as well and end up in his current home, Boston. Nickenson Chery now works at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, proving that whatever the struggles one faces perseverance and hard work will lead you to success.(Nickenson的旅程才刚刚开始,他走过了一条漫长的道路,在全国各地寻找完美的职业。从南佛罗里达开始,他在阿文图拉医院实习。当他没有长期的(工作)选择时,他搬到拉斯维加斯住了很短的一段时间,结果也离开了那里,最终住在了他现在的家,波士顿。Nickenson Chery现在在波士顿儿童医院信托基金会工作,他证明了一个人无论面临什么样的困难,坚持不懈和努力工作都会使你成功。)”可知,毕业后他换了很多工作,直到找到合适的工作。故选A。
由文章第四段“Nickenson left these words to current students at FNU, ‘You have to know where you’re going. Don’t take anything for granted. If it wasn’t for FNU that taught me a lot of stuff in and out of the classroom, I would ‘ve never gotten this position. I have a degree from FNU; nothing can stop me.’(Nickenson 对 FNU 现在的学生说:’你必须知道你要去哪里。不要认为任何事情都是理所当然的。如果不是FNU在课堂内外教会了我很多东西,我永远不会得到这个职位。我有佛罗里达州立大学的学位;没有什么能阻止我。’)”可知,Nickenson建议FNU 的在校学生有明确的目标并心存感激。故选D。

C
【参考答案】28—31 DACD
28. D 词义猜测题。根据上文“As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time(随着人们对食物的来源及其对地球的影响越来越有社会意识,他们正在选择非动物的植物性食品。无牛肉已经存在了很长一段时间)”可推断,下文意思是Aleph Farms等公司的人造肉的受欢迎程度正在增加。故推测出soaring和increasing意思相近,故选D。
29. A 推理判断题。根据第二段“‘Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,’ said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk.’ But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.’(首席执行官Aviv Wolff说:‘Remilk成立的使命是停止使用动物来生产我们的食物,因为作为乳制品爱好者,我们意识到放弃牛奶是不可能的。但现在牛奶的标价不合理。乳制品行业对我们的星球、我们的健康和我们的动物都是毁灭性的,而且再也不能持续下去了。’)”可知,Wolff对于Remilk的做法是支持和赞成的,故选A。
30. C 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.(乳品养殖场的环境成本太高了。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single co w or the planet.(现在,以色列一家食品科技初创公司Remilk制造出了真正不伤害一头奶牛或地球的乳制品。)”

根据“Make connections with others. It would be possible for people to know what you needed.” Socialize with others to make complaints accessible.

Be Wise Internet Users
It goes without saying that the Internet plays an increasingly important role in our lives. However, to make the best use of the Internet, we must be wise Internet users.
In the first place, we must use the Internet for the right purposes. Besides having online classes, we can search for some useful information on the Internet instead of playing computer games. What’s more, we need to limit our time on the Internet. It’s common knowledge that long screen time does great harm to our mental health as well as eyes. Never should we enjoy the convenience of technology at the cost of our health.
Let’s use the Internet wisely and improve our studies effectively!

The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily(暂时地). Although there were going to be storms in life, my heart ached when picturing a handsome and sunny boy returning to his classmates with scars. Tears in eyes, I really didn’t know how to comfort him. After all, the scars were on him. Not all of us were able to turn that particular page successfully. It was at this time that I remembered what my mother said to my sister. It was those words that enabled her to overcome her psychological barriers and lead a smooth life.
So I told him about Nancy’s childhood. I passed the wisdom on to my son. Realizing my complex feelings, he smiled and comforted me instead. He took heart from my advice and returned to school with his head held high. By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not matter. So determined, he gave up any plastic surgery. We all have “scars” that we believe will keep people away from us. Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value within yourself, and your beauty will shine through.
