Paul Hemington, 57, is the Assistant Operations Manager at Cheddar Gorge(切达峡谷) and Caves cheddar gorge.co.uk.
I moved to Somerset mainly for my family. My daughter was getting married and I didn’t want to live six hours away, so we made the move. Once we moved, we were made unneeded and it was a mad race to get work. I ended up a there at Cheddar Gorge and Caves.
Cheddar Gorge is like nothing else in the UK. It’s a unique phenomenon, because although there are other caves in the country, you don’t have the gorge elsewhere. This is a major geological feature. It’s three miles long and there’s just this natural, raw beauty. I can sit at my desk in guest services and lookout at part of the gorge. It’s amazing.
The Cheddar Gorge spirit is strong. You know, not having worked here or heard about the area, you come here and it gets under your skin in the right way. You become part of it, it becomes part of you. I’m very passionate about it. And there’s the amazing wildlife, the geology, the prehistory—Cheddar Man is still one of the greatest finds in the UK.
Every day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves is different. You’ve got the rock sports side of things, the climbing, the caving. We take people through the caves on tours and we have prehistory, which we do with the museum, whereby we have schools come in and do demonstrations with them. We will dress up as genuinely as we can to reproduce the time period of the Cheddar Man, which is the Mesolithic period, so 10, 000 years ago. We do fire lighting, for example, and hopefully it’s inspiring to the young people! It’s really cool to be in the museum garden and have part of the gorge as the background while you’re doing it so you can really submerge yourself in that moment.
My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge or across to the reservoir. The view is amazing. Yes, you can see pictures of it, but honestly you have to be there to fully appreciate it. You might hear some buzzards or see some sheep or goats while you’re up there, just to enhance the experience!

To study the behavior of wild animals, scientists routinely tag them with solar-powered GPS location trackers. But such devices’ battery capacity limits how long they operate, often bringing a nearly end to vital conservation work. Solar-powered trackers break easily, making them a poor choice for devices fastened to larger mammals and they don’t work for night creatures.
So biologist Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller of the University of Copenhagen and his colleagues turned to another abundant power source: kinetic energy generated by an animal’s movements. It is also lighter and cheaper to make than its battery-powered counterparts(对应的事物). “The design is creative and exciting,” says Mark Hebblewhite, a habitat ecologist at the University of Montana. The proof-of-concept kinetic tracker works by means of a magnetic pendulum(摆钟) that swings around a copper coil, generating electricity as it moves.
Their kinetic tracker, which Havmoller’s team recently tested on domestic dogs, a wild pony and a European bison, could theoretically survive for the entire lifespan of an active animal. The dogs and the bison in the study were active enough to create the energy to transmit one location signal per day for 14 days and 17 days, respectively. However, one of the less active wild pony’s trackers lasted at least 146 days but didn’t produce enough power for daily transmissions, the researchers reported in PLOS ONE. The limited power generated by the animals’ movements means the technology isn’t ready for primetime just yet, says ecologist Emily Studd of British Columbia’s Thompson Rivers University, who wasn’t involved in the study.
When researchers want to keep close tabs on animals, they often need GPS fixes more than once a day. But Studd says that “with a bit more development, this could be a game changer for wildlife animal research and monitoring.”
Rasmus and his colleagues hope conservation workers can one day use this technology to track species such as tigers, leopards and wolves, which can easily destroy solar-powered trackers and which hunt and travel at night. 28. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The capacity of solar-powered GPS location trackers.
B. The limitations of solar-powered GPS location trackers.
C. The importance of conservation efforts for wild animals.
D. The challenges faced by scientists in tagging wild animals.
29. What is the power source of the new tracker
A. The sun. B. The battery. C. The animal. D. The pendulum.
30. What can we learn from the research
A. The dogs had a low level of activity.
B. The kinetic tracker often functions improperly.
C. The research needs more scientists to get involved.
D. High levels of activity may lead to consistent transmissions.
31. What can be a suitable title for this passage
A. Trackers and Animals Can Coexist
B. New Wildlife Trackers Run on Animal Power
C. Kinetic Trackers Outperform Solar-powered Trackers
D. Technology Progress Contributes to Wildlife Conservation

When we think about lives filled with meaning, we often focus on people whose grand contributions benefited humanity. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela surely felt they had a worthwhile life. But how about us ordinary people, struggling in atypical existence
There is an important element to consider. Think about the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or imagine the scenery at the top of a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may enhance how they view their life. This element is defined as EA (experiential appreciation) by Joshua Hicks, a psychological professor at Texas A&M University.
Recently, he and his research team set out to figure out whether EA was related to a person’s sense of meaning in a series of studies that involved more than 3, 000 participants. At an initial test, researchers had participants rate their agreement of different coping strategies to relieve their stress. They found people who managed stress by focusing on their appreciation for life’s beauty also reported experiencing life as highly meaningful.
Researchers then conducted a series of experiments, in which they gave participants specific tasks and, once more, asked them to report how strongly they identified with statements linked to purpose, etc. In one case, participants who watched an awe-inspiring video reported having a greater sense of EA and meaning in life, compared with those who watched more neutral videos. After reflecting on the results collected from the participants, researchers confirmed their original theory.
But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented lifestyles fill the day with targets and goals. We are on the go, and we attempt to maximize output both at work and at leisure.
This focus on future outcomes makes it all too easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slowdown, let life surprise us and embrace the significance in the everyday life.
32. Why are the butterfly and the scenery on a hill mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To introduce a concept. B. To attract readers’ interest.
C. To demonstrate the beauty of nature. D. To show the necessity of protecting nature.
33. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. By designing different strategies to reduce stress.
B. By studying previous research data.
C. By shooting videos starring the participants.
D. By analyzing the response from the participants.
34. Who tends to find life more meaningful according to the text
A. A person who always gets her life well-organized.
B. A person who often hears motivating speeches.
C. A person who leads a fast-paced life.
D. A person who always expects future results.
35. What life philosophy does the author show in the last paragraph
A. No pains, no gains.
B. Those who believe in their ability can do anything
C. Live your life one day at a time.
D. Always prepare for a rainy day.

The stress weighed heavily on me as I carefully sought every possible opportunity to save pennies, ensuring that I could afford both groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-olds on didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He had his heart set on a particular brand of yogurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yogurt decorated with a cartoon child skateboarding on its packaging, containing a mere two spoonfuls per cup. Such products, designed to attract children with their flashy marketing, only served to make me hate advertising.
However, a bunch of parental guilt seized me as his innocent eyes met mine, silently questioning, “Why is yogurt such a big deal ” Determined to sweep his disappointment, I made a sacrifice typical of single mothers. I returned an item needed to the shelf, ensuring that he could enjoy his favorite yogurt.
On the journey back from the grocery store, a sight caught my attention—a homeless man holding a sign by the roadside. My heartache d, and I turned around, observing passers-by purposefully steer(绕开) clear of him, avoiding any meaningful interaction. Even my son didn’t seem to care much, either. Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised, He stared at me with curious eyes, trying to piece together why we could afford to help someone else when we ourselves were in a tight spot. I took the moment to explain that even when life feels overwhelming, we can always find something to offer to others. “Sometimes, it’s not just about having enough, but about sharing what we do have,” I said, hoping to instill a sense of compassion and generosity in him. My words seemed to resonate with him a she nodded thoughtfully, as park of understanding lighting up his face.
Then, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. Just before we were about to leave the homeless man, he impulsively took out the newly bought yogurt from the grocery bag and ran back to the man. Handing it over, he said, “I think you might be hungry.” The man’s eyes softened, his face breaking into a grateful smile a she accepted the yogurt. Watching this, l felt a surge of pride for my son’s unexpected gesture of kindness. It was a poignant renin der that true generosity comes from a wiling heart, not from the abundance of what we have.
