One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I could do something I love for a living I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends studied art in the USA. She advised me to go to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). That was the only school I applied to ( 申请) after I graduated from high school.
Luckily, I was accepted into RISD. At first, I felt a little down. I didn’t have my own style. I tried many different things. Finally, Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me find it.
Now, I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator (插图画家) for ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I often get letters from readers. They love my style.
When I get an assignment (任务), I read it over a lot of times. I try to work out the most important message that I need to include in my work. I’m still in the early part of my career (职业). Passage C
What do you usually do in your spare time Chatting online is now a national pastime(消遣) in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generations. To some people, however,
online chats can seem like a kind of “polite conversation” . 1
Get to the Point
When sending a friend request, include your real name and many other identifying information. 2 If you want to start your conversation directly, never send “Are you there ” without any follow-up (补充的) messages. The quicker you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
3
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the person on the other end 4 For example, they may be driving a car or at a meeting. Also, never send information by voice message—it is hard to note down. What’s more, you can use emojis and GIFs in your conversation because they can help you reduce your embarrassment.
Try to Understand
5 If the person you’re talking to says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower”, that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do. It must be an excuse to stop talking to you. If someone waits for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No” . If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them as their literal meanings (such as a smile or a wave) . For the post-90s and post-00s generations, however, they could be speechless(无语的) .
A. Send the Right Things B. Remember, everybody’s time is valuable. C. You can always judge a person’s mood by his or her text messages. D. They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now. E. Yet hidden rules do exist(存在) , as long as you take the time to look for them.
