To honour her father, who she also describes as her best friend, she decided to start a book drive called For Love and Buttercup, collecting books for kids with cancer.
“It was very much an overnight idea,” she explains. “I posted a message on an app called Nextdoor asking my neighbours for used book donations. 3M and Discovery Education announced Sean Jiang from Gilman School as one of the top ten finalists from across the nation for the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It’s a competition that encourages students to identify an everyday problem and submit a video showing the science behind the solution he or she came up with.
14-year-old Jiang decided to help those who can’t see. Blind people had a hard time navigationg (导航) objects that are medium to far range. So Jiang wanted to design something to give them a heads-up on obstacles (障碍) that may be incoming.
Jiang’s inspiration came from the powers of the hearing system. “I learned in school that bats and whales are able to use echolocation (回声定位) to help them navigate and just use their sense of hearing and I also saw on YouTube some very skilled blind people that use echolocation to help them walk,” said Jiang.
Jiang started with a virtual reality setting and then made it a reality. His creation uses a depth camera that can detect how close objects are, thus giving enough time to avoid the obstacles. When a blind is walking with the device, the sensor of the depth camera gathers the information regarding the obstacles’ position and distance. Then the AI system in it will turn the distance data into musical sound guidance. This could significantly increase the walking speed of a blind person as well as decrease the number of obstacles they hit.
Some other similar programs were alright at finding objects that were in close range, but Jiang still wanted the blind to experience the world even fuller so they were able to see stuff that was much further away than their circle of reach.
In October the top ten finalists will compete in person in Minneapolis for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and a $25,000 prize.
28. What’s the main purpose of the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge
A. It is to inspire students to recognize a daily problem and demonstrate the scientific principle behind the solution.
B. It is to help schools select talents.
C. It is to develop students’ teamwork and creativity.
D. It is to encourage students to find problems and build their confidence.
29. What does the underlined word “heads-up” mean in paragraph 2

When answering a question, your silence might say more than your words. A new psychology study has found pausing before replying, even for just a few seconds, can make you seem more insincere or dishonest. That perception (感知) of dishonesty might not be too inaccurate, either. Numerous studies suggest people are slower to respond when they are not being truthful, possibly because it takes more mental work to block a truthful response or fabricate (编造) an alternative.
What’s been less clear is how well our lies have been fooling people. Some studies suggest delayed answers come across as insincere to the listener. Others find no relationship between the two, and still more have found the opposite: A bit of hesitation increases our perception of sincerity. These findings are inconsistent and confusing. They are also mostly based on correlations. Even the few studies that have actually looked at causal relationships often didn’t consider confusing factors that could also give away a liar or an insincere speaker.
The new research seeks to improve some of those limitations by examining thousands of people under a variety of conditions. Together, it involves more than 7, 500 individuals in a total of 14 experiments. On the whole, the authors found an immediate response was perceived as more sincere, while a delayed response, even a delay as brief as two seconds, was seen as more insincere. “Evaluating other people’s sincerity is an important part of social interactions.” says consumer behaviour researcher Ignazio Ziano.
“It would be unfair for the responder, such as a crime suspect, if the response delay was misattributed to (错误地归因于) thought suppression (抑制) or answer fabrication when it was in fact caused by a different factor, such as simply being distracted or thoughtful.” explains Ziano.
32. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. The perception of dishonesty depends on your silence.
B. Preparing a truthful response needs more mental work.
C. The impression of dishonesty isn’t always accurate.
D. Quicker replies to questions make you seem reliable.
33. According to paragraph 3, how do researchers carry out their research
A. By studying the findings of several previous research projects.
B. By examining thousands of people in various situations.
C. By collecting data from the database from a new research.
D. By analyzing the circumstances of the responses involved.
34. Why does Ziano say it is unfair for the responder in the last paragraph
A. Listeners should ignore the pauses.
B. A real criminal could escape quietly.
C. The responder may be judged wrongly.
D. The response delay affects people’s preference.
35. Where is this text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A brochure. D. A magazine.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. D

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“The new research seeks to improve some of those limitations by examining thousands of people under a variety of conditions.(这项新研究试图通过对数千人在各种条件下进行调查来改善其中一些局限性)”可知,研究人员通过对数千人在不同情况下的调查来进行他们的研究。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“It would be unfair for the responder, such as a crime suspect, if the response delay was misattributed to thought suppression or answer fabrication when it was in fact caused by a different factor, such as simply being distracted or thoughtful.(如果反应延迟被错误地归咎于思维抑制或编造答案,而实际上是由其他因素造成的,比如单纯的分心或深思熟虑,这对应答者来说是不公平的)”可知,Ziano说这对回应者是不公平的是因为回应者可能会被错误地判断。

With best wishes,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear friends,
In order to raise students’ awareness of protecting the environment, I’m writing to call on everyone to take part in “building a greener campus”.
As we all know, climate change and pollution have seriously affected our life. Therefore, everyone of us should take the responsibility of protecting the environment. To start with, saving energy is protecting the environment. Turning off taps and lights immediately is the first step. What’s more, waste sorting is of great significance to protecting the environment. Last but not least, the key to protecting the environment is to plant trees. This is because trees can absorb carbon dioxide, helping reduce the greenhouse effect.
Only by protecting the environment in our daily life, will our planet have a bright future.
With best wishes,

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The library was typically so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. But on this Wednesday afternoon, there was a roar of laughter that spread through the halls. It was coming from a table in the back. Books were piled so high that one could barely see the source of all the noise. Brian and Josie were hiding behind the mountain of history texts, their faces bright red from laughing.
Mrs Cane, the librarian, followed the laughter and then approached the table. As she cleared her throat and looked over the piles of books, Brian and Josie looked up to meet her gaze. Mrs Cane looked at the books, then at the kids. “And what is it you two are supposed to be working on ”
Brian hesitated a moment, and then answered, “We’re working on a paper for our history class.”
“I see,” Mrs Cane said harshly. “Perhaps one of the private reading rooms would be a better place for you to concentrate and study. Quietly.”
The kids collected their books and their backpacks and followed Mrs Cane down a long hallway until they got to a dark row of doors. Mrs Cane pulled out a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked a door. She turned on the light, which shone brightly overhead. The kids placed their books on the dusty table and reluctantly (不情愿地) climbed into the chairs. Brian and Josie shrugged (耸肩) and opened their books, finally focusing on the project at hand.
Time was ticking away. After what seemed like hours, Brian and Josie decided to take a break and when Josie opened the door of the room, Brian’s eyes opened wide. The library was completely dark. Looking at his watch, he let out a gasp. “It’s 9:30! The library closed an hour ago!”
Paragraph 1:
Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone. Unfortunately, there was no cellphone inside. “I left my phone at home so we can not call anyone for help!” Brian cried out, and looked at Josie anxiously. Josie turned back, “Calm down, Brian. I remember seeing a telephone at the entrance to the library, maybe we can reach Mrs Cane on the telephone.” Then, in a hurry, Brian put the books into his backpack and left the room with Josie. It was dark outside, and the two kids tried to figure out where they should go. Slowly, they were inching towards the entrance, comforting each other.
Paragraph 2
They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing. They felt their way in the darkness toward the sound, and found a telephone on the wall. Trembling with excitement, Brian answered the phone, and heard Mrs Cane’s voice on the line: “Sorry, Brian. I forgot you and Josie were in the library. Now I’m coming to get you guys out.” Hanging up the phone, Brian breathed a sigh of relief. Just in a second, Mrs Cane arrived. Excited and overjoyed, Mrs Cane rushed forward and hugged the kids tightly, praising their calmness. It was through this accidental experience that Brian and Josie learned there is always a way out when a problem arises.

When 19-year-old Emily Bhatnagar from Maryland, USA, found out her father had stage four thyroid (甲状腺) cancer, her response was a little different than you might expect. To honour her father, who she also describes as her best friend, she decided to start a book drive called For Love and Buttercup, collecting books for kids with cancer.
“It was very much an overnight idea,” she explains. “I posted a message on an app called Nextdoor asking my neighbours for used book donations. I was only expecting a few here and there, but the response was truly incredible, and it was just the push I needed to co-exist with my grief rather than letting it consume me.
“It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch my dad go through cancer and see him lose a little bit of himself each day, but the book drive allowed me to develop a newfound sense of purpose combined with an even greater sense of compassion (同情) to help others in any shape or form. I wanted to help kids. They’ve always held a soft spot in my heart.”
Using tips she earns from working at her parents’ bread shop, Emily has bought many books out of her own pocket. In addition, she receives donations through her Amazon wish list, which can be found in the bio of the book drive’s Instagram account.

In October, the top ten finalists will compete in person in Minneapolis for the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and a $25,000 prize.
28. What’s the main purpose of the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge
A It is to inspire students to recognize a daily problem and demonstrate the scientific principle behind the solution.
B. It is to help schools select talents.
C. It is to develop students’ teamwork and creativity.
D. It is to encourage students to find problems and build their confidence.
29. What does the underlined word “heads-up” mean in paragraph 2
A. Raising head. B. Brief report. C. One-on-one match. D. Advance warning.
30 What can we learn about Jiang from the text
A. He was the champion of the 2023 3M event.
B. He invented technology to remove road obstacles.
C. He sought to assist the blind in walking smoothly.
D. He developed a new navigation app for his school.
31. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How did the device help the blind.
B. The source of inspiration for Sean Jiang’s invention.
C. The reason Jiang entered the competition.
D. Jiang’s device’s creation process.

C. A brochure. D. A magazine.
