“Have you checked the oil in the car ” my father used to say to me, his way of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with a question about the oil and end with a question about the oil, with not a lot in between.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often offered by means of practical advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about my car. “How’s the car running ” “Did you get it serviced ” My car — an old green Toyota Corona bought for $500 — was where my father showed his love.
Why can’t we fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you” The point is: that’s exactly what we are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “I love you” can be heard in the slightly longer “I could come around Saturday and repair your chair.” The words “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be hardly heard, but the main meaning is there in the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves down from the roof.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip — a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold morning to say goodbye. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and buggy. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would sing “horse-and-buggy” every time I tried to overtake some other speeding cars.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so carelessly laughed at was simply Dad’s attempt at love.
24. Why did the author’s father often ask about the car
A To show his love for the car. B. To see if there is enough oil.
C. To express his care to his son. D. To check the condition of the car.
25. Which of the following sentences is an example of Fatherlish
A. I love you deeply. B. It’s great to see you.
C. You made my life better. D. I can check the oil for you.
26. What does the underlined word “overtaking” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Outrunning. B. Approaching.
C. Crashing into. D. Knocking over.
27. What can be inferred about the author in the last paragraph
A. He wanted to own a dictionary. B. He regrets his childish behavior.
C. He is sad about his father’s death. D. He realized his father’s love then.

The number of places on Earth with the right natural climate and geography for the Olympic Winter Games is already naturally limited. Yet a new study finds as global temperatures rise from the burning of fossil fuels, the list is narrowing further.
Concerns over how climate change will affect the biggest of all sporting events have been mounting each time the Olympics are held every two years. But the Summer Olympics are more adaptable than their winter counterpart because the former can be held in a much wider range of places and can be put off to the somewhat cooler “shoulder season.” Though refrigeration (冷冻) technology has helped make it easier to hold some winter events indoors, in a wider range of places, outdoor sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, are more depending on the climate.
While previous studies have examined how global warming will affect the snowfall and temperature of Winter Olympic sites, they have not included the more specific needs of competitive athletes, says the new study’s co-author Daniel Scott. He and his team conducted an online survey of 339 athletes in 20 countries to find out what conditions they considered unfair or unsafe for their sport. Based on the survey results, they created four indicators (评价指标) that contribute to these conditions: lack of snow coverage, wet snow, rain, and temperatures that are too high or low. The researchers combined these indicators with local weather station data and computer models to evaluate the future possibility of the 21 current and previous host cities.
The conclusion shows if greenhouse gas emissions (排放) continue to grow at the same rate, only four locations—Lake Placid, Sapporo, and Lillehammer and Oslo—will be reliable by mid-century. And by the end of the century, only Sapporo will remain in the reliable category in that case. However, there is still a silver lining. “If countries can control the emissions in line with the goals of the Paris climate agreement, nine locations will still be reliable places by mid-century,” Scott says.
28. What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A. The Summer Olympics could be moved to the spring.
B. Changing the host city is one way to fight climate change.
C. The Summer Olympics will not be affected by climate change.
D. Technology can’t remove the climatic impact on the Winter Olympics.
29. Where is the new research different from the former ones
A. It contains some different indicators. B. It takes athletes’ needs into account.
C. It examines the snowfall and temperature. D. It is a survey of athletes around the world.
30. Which of the following best describes the research conclusion
A. Hopeless. B. Confusing. C. Disturbing. D. Pleasing.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Winter Olympic Sites Are Melting Away
B. Warmer Winter Olympics Seem Unavoidable
C. Where Will the Next Winter Olympics Be Held
D. Previous Winter Olympics Host Cities Will Disappear
D
A recent analysis from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the benefits of replacing animal products with plant-based foods. This analysis, which amplifies a previous study by the same committee, further emphasizes the significant impact of plant-based diets on weight loss, cholesterol (胆固醇) and fat intake in overweight adults.
The most significant finding is that both healthy and unhealthy plant-based foods contribute to weight loss when they replace animal products in the diet. This conclusion is significant because it underlines the potential of a plant-based diet, regardless of the specific type of plant-based foods consumed, in managing weight and improving overall health.
This analysis is a secondary examination of a prior study that involved 244 overweight adults. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group followed a low-fat vegan (素食的) diet, and the second made no changes to their diet. Obviously, the study set no restrictions on calorie intake, and the researchers did not give participants specific instructions on diet quality.
The study authors used two different indexes (指标) to assess: the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The hPDI emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, while the uPDI includes more refined grains and fruit juices. Higher scores on the indexes correlate with greater consumption of plant-based foods and reduced consumption of animal products.
The results revealed that after 16 weeks, participants on the vegan diet showed increased scores in both indexes. This increase significantly correlated with participants losing an average of about 13 pounds, mainly from reduced fat mass. The second group showed no change in their index scores.
Overall, the analysis provides strong evidence that eating plant-based foods is effective for weight management and health improvement.
32. What does the underlined word “amplifies” mean in paragraph 1
A. Abuse. B. Expand. C. Launch. D. Classify.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The causes of putting on weights. B. The key insight on plant-based foods.
C. The significance of managing weights. D. The specific types of plant-based foods.
34. How is the study conducted
A. By improving participants’ diet quality.
B. By following participants’ daily routines.
C. By monitoring participants’ calorie intake.
D. By comparing participants’ indexes scores.
35. What can we know from the study
A. Being on diet is the key to losing weight.
B. All plant products are beneficial to health.
C. Plant-based foods show promising results.
D. Animal products have no effect on weight.

On a Sunday morning,Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing,Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern,“Mom,are you OK?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦)for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed. ”
Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help?First,he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly,so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do?Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry(待洗的衣物). Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times,so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally,he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in,and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!.
Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
But as far as he could remember, there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from?"Tony wondered, reaching into the washer to take out more clothes. Then much to his astonishment,he pulled out two T-shirts,both in light pink. Realizing there was something wrong,Tony stood frozen, his heart sinking. While racking his brain for reasons,he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for it. With no means of handling the situation,Tony was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. "That isn't a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally,he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Paragraph 2:
Tony nervously knocked at his mom's bedroom door again, with the pink dress in her arms. After what seemed like ages,he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son's unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. "Sorry mom,I shouldn't have ruined your favorite dress. ” Tony apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made,he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what was going on,mom smiled understandingly at Tony,"Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help. ” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone,"You know what?I think it looks nice. " At this Tony beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.
