Every year thousands of young people in England finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers (志愿者). Volunteers give their time to help people. You may find it easy and fun to use smartphones. But for many old people, it’s a hard thing.
Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School sees the problem. He tries to teach the old people how to use smartphones with a guidebook (指南). The 16-year-old sets up a volunteer group called Silver Hair. Its seven members spend around half a year writing a 300-page book called May I Show You How to Use Smartphones.
The group makes a survey (调查) of more than 1,000 old people and talks with many in nursing homes. They find out what the old people care most about with smart phones. “How to use WeChat” topped the list. This becomes one chapter of the book. The other nine chapters include online shopping, using online maps and more. The group prints out

Passage 2
It was in one of Australia’s worst fire seasons. Bush fires in Australia lasted from September 2019 to March 2020. They killed (致死) at least 29 people and destroyed (摧毁) about 2,500 homes. Around 1.25 billion animals died in the fires.
Like millions of others around the world, 18-year-old Rachel Ratelle from the US saw news of the fires. She felt sad as she watched a koala trying to climb a tree to safety. But unlike many people, she decided to do something about it.
She searched for organizations in Australia to find out what they needed most. Many groups were asking for hand-sewn (手工缝制的) pouches (育儿袋) for animals like koalas and kangaroos. The fires burnt their homes and killed their parents. Ratelle wanted to make these things, but there was just one problem.
“I knew nothing about it,” Ratelle said. “Giving money seemed like something too easy. I wanted to help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew. “Over the next month, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew(缝制)by watching online videos. She sewed 25 pouches of different sizes on her own and sent them to organizations in Australia.

You may find it easy and fun to use smartphones. But for many old people, it’s a hard thing.
Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School sees the problem. He tries to teach the old people how to use smartphones with a guidebook (指南). It was in one of Australia’s worst fire seasons. Bush fires in Australia lasted from September 2019 to March 2020. They killed (致死) at least 29 people and destroyed (摧毁) about 2,500 homes. Around 1.25 billion animals died in the fires.
