读后续写之历险脱困
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 3: 34 in the morning. I was in our apartment on the 22nd floor.
I went to bed at around 2 o’clock in the morning, but for some reason I woke up a minute or so before the quake started. I was comfortable in my bed, about to fall asleep again when suddenly the bed started moving a little. That bed used to move a lot, so I just thought it was my wife rolling over. I looked over to her and she was fast asleep. She wasn’t moving.
My first thought was: OK, it’s just another small quake. We used to get a lot of small quakes in Chile. But this one kept going and then got a bit stronger. It was enough to wake my wife up and she asked me, “Is the room shaking ” It is our way of asking: Are we experiencing a mild earthquake The noise of the perfume bottles hitting each other in the bathroom and the hanging wine glasses clanging against each other in the dining room confirmed what was happening. I thought, OK, this is just a strong quake, no reason to get out of bed.
When an earthquake starts to get stronger, we have learnt that we have to open the front door because they sometimes become stuck when the building starts to sway (摇晃). So, I went to open the front door while my wife went to see how the kids were. They were still fast asleep. However, on the way to the front door, the shaking increased considerably. When I turned around to go back to the bedroom, the full force of the earthquake started to hit. I had never felt an earthquake that was so strong. I couldn’t move forward and I had to hold onto the wall to stay up on my feet.
The earthquake gave a final strong push of intensity (强度) and then our lights went out. This is the only time in my life when I honestly thought I was going to die.

Tim and his father were sailing at sea. He tried to remember all the sailing knowledge his father taught. However, it wasn’t easy for him. He could only master the skills to tie ropes and wear a life jacket in case of emergency.
Tim pulled in the sail (帆) of the boat over his head successfully. He looked back at his father, hoping for a smile or a nod. But his dad was looking up at the sail, not at him. Tim enjoyed sailing with his father, but he also felt nervous and different from his confident father.
Suddenly, the wind was blowing angrily. He put on his life jacket nervously. By comparison, his father never wore a life jacket, for he had been swimming and sailing for his entire life .
“Tim, can you take the helm (方向盘) for a minute ” his father asked, “Just keep it going straight. I’ll run up to the back of the boat to check something.” Considering the changing weather, Tim hesitated, but he didn’t want to see the familiar disapproving look on his father’s face. “Uh, sure,” he replied and went to hold the helm tightly.
Suddenly, the wind shifted direction and the boat heeled (倾斜) so sharply that it might turn over. Tim knew he had to let some air out of the sail to help right the boat, but he would have to let go of the helm to do that.
He looked back for his father, but the sail blocked his view. “Dad!” he called, but the wind swallowed his voice. His heart was pounding in his ears. The boat began to heel more. Tim knew he had to act fast. He held the helm with one hand and used the other hand to reach for the mainsail line, trying to loosen it. After a few attempts, he managed to let the air out of the sail. The boat quickly righted itself.
Tim gave a sigh of relief. Then he looked around for his father. But there was no sign of him.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I’ve always known that I’m very quick with my hands. If someone throws something, I catch it almost before I’m aware it has been thrown. When I was young, I had no idea how useful this skill would become.
Last week, I was going to visit a friend with her newborn and was on my way to a toy store to buy a gift. I’d once lived in the neighbourhood and I decided to head back to my old cupcake shop for a coffee. Sitting alone at a table outside with my drink, I was approached by an older man, who in a calm and very matter-of-fact way told me to call 911, because there was a baby on a fire escape.
I jumped up to see where the baby was. I was so surprised to see it, wearing a little onesie (连体衣) and lying on the fire escape railings (栏杆) between the second and third storeys. I was nervous, so the baby boy became my only priority.
As I was on the phone to the emergency services, I made eye contact with the child, keeping him calm, telling him to stay there. Some people were going up the stairs to find the parents, who were apparently sleeping through the whole drama.
I just wanted the child to feel safe. I hoped he’d stay there until somebody could rescue him. Apparently he had slipped through pieces of cardboard placed next to an air-conditioning unit in the window, and without bars to protect him he’d crawled (爬) out and up the fire escape towards the next storey. He was only 16 months old. For him to even climb up and balance in that position was incredible.
Then he slipped. Instinctively (本能), he grabbed on the railing as he fell, hanging by his arms. I knew he couldn’t hold on, 25 feet above the street, for long. I sensed people had gathered behind, but my attention was purely focused on my intention to catch the baby.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In a misty morning, Robert was hiking high in the mountains with Lucky, his tiny but energetic dog. Every weekend, the two would go together on a hiking to climb nearby mountains. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After an hour, they reached the top, touched by the beautiful view there. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, Robert felt refreshed. When he looked at the loyal friend beside him, the memory of meeting Lucky for the first time flooded into his mind.
It had been about two years since Robert got Lucky. She was small and a ball of energy. “The day when my mother let me choose a dog from the doghouse, she was playfully jumping around and licking (舔) me, barking (犬吠) loudly to show how much she wanted to be my family,” thought Robert. “She looked quite small, but from the moment I threw my eyes on her, I knew she was the perfect dog for me. And, for some reasons, that active energy was something that I needed in my life,” Robert kept thinking.
Time flew, dark night drawing near. Having got enough rest, Robert decided it was time to go home. Suddenly, Robert lost his balance, rolled down a rocky hill, hit his head really hard, and finally stopped upside down.
One of his leg was in between two rocks, so he couldn’t move. But that was the least of his worries. What Robert was really scared of was that he was going to sleep with a serious head injury. He tried to cry for help, but he was so weak that he was going to become unconscious (昏迷的). “If only there had been someone else,” Robert thought, sad and hopeless. As darkness fell further, the weather turned cold and windy and he was about to lose consciousness. What’s worse, Robert noticed something like a snake approaching him before he finally fell unconscious.

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. I was working from home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible, snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home.
The route to the university takes about 30 minutes along the Trans-Canada Highway. After I finished my work, it was just past 4:30 p. m. I started heading back home.
Not soon after I left office, the snow started and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The storm was a “snownado,” or what the TV meteorologists call a Saskatchewan screamer, because it comes in fast and so windy that it screams.
The road condition was horrible, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I don’t know exactly when, I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field. The Trans-Canada Highway was in between two farms, each 500 yards away, I remember. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. They told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night, saying nobody was coming to get me until morning, at the earliest. It was now 6:30 p.m., I had to do something for help.

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the caraway!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do

Billy was a six-year-old boy. He was very excited but was a little nervous about his first camping trip with his parents.
“What if the tent falls over and kills us What if the wind blows the tent away What if a wolf comes into the tent and eats us ... ,”he kept asking his father silly questions.
“Perhaps, you have read too many stories with big bad wolves,” his father replied, laughing. “There aren’t any wolves in the city or even in the whole country, except in zoos.”
“Well, what if one escaped from a zoo ” Billy insisted.
“Zoos were careful enough not to let their animals escape,” his father comforted Billy.
Billy soon forgot about wolves as they started preparing for the camping trip. Billy helped his father load up the car. They put in the tent, a big one for the whole family. Then the sleeping bags, blankets and more. When everything was packed, his father started the car. Soon they were leaving the city behind them.
“Look at the cows!” shouted his mother excitedly when they were arriving at the campsite, which belonged to a farm and was in a big field. “They are eating the grass!”
Once the tent was set up, Billy went to explore. There were trees to climb and a stream for catching insects and fish. The day flew by and it was getting dark.
As they got inside the tent and were ready for sleep, strange noises kept coming from the distance.
“What’s that noise Is it a wolf approaching ” Billy asked his mother and moved closer to her.
“Maybe it’s just the wind,” said his mother, who patted Billy sleepily.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot day. The sun scorched (炙烤) down and everywhere you looked, you could see the heat waves blowing above the sand. John rolled over, realizing that half of his body was well and truly burnt. He had not meant to sleep in the sun but the heat and late nights studying for his examinations made him miserable. Stretching, he got to his feet, picked up his surfboard and looked around. The beach, which had earlier been crowded in the sun, was now comparatively empty. Seagulls flew down to clean up the food of people’s picnic lunches.
The ice-cream van had gone, and so were the lifeguards who were doing first aid on the beach. John looked up to where the sun was and estimated it was about five o’clock. Time to head home. It was “Mum’s Kitchen Rule” that had him moving homewards. If he did not get home in time for dinner, he would go hungry. Wandering along the water’s edge, he happened to glance out to sea. What made him look up at that particular moment, he never knew, but it was the right time for the swimmer he spotted. His hand was up, signaling distress (险情) and he was calling out something.
Quickly John glanced around the beach — no one else was close enough to help the man, and crucially, no one had noticed. Cupping his hands to his mouth, he shouted “Help” to get the attention of other people on the beach. Someone waved back to him and John pointed to the swimmer. “Get help,” he shouted. Then without hesitation, he jumped into the sea with his surfboard. John was a strong swimmer and had a good skill for distance swimming. His coach had tried hard to persuade him to go into competitions but he was not interested.

Braving the Waters
Joel Boyers and his wife Melody Among were heading home from the Nashville airport. Among had just earned her helicopter pilot’s licence when Boyers received a call from a stranger. The caller told him that her brother and his two daughters were trapped on their roof in Waverly, 60 miles from Nashville. They were surrounded by rising floodwaters caused by the heaviest rainfall that year.
Desperate, the caller begged, “Could you please, please rescue my loved ones ”
Boyers, 41, looked at the address the caller mentioned while glancing at the storm clouds. “Ma’am,” he said, “no one will fly in this weather ...” But even before he finished the sentence, Boyers knew they would go back up. “I’ve got a daughter myself,” Boyers says. “I’ll see what I can do.” He put the brother’s address into his phone and they drove back to the airport.
Before long they were in the air, unprepared for what they were about to see. It was nothing but raging water below them. There were two houses on fire. Cars in trees. Tons of debris (残骸). No one was going to be able to swim in that.
The flooding also took out cell phone service, meaning that Boyers couldn’t use his phone to pinpoint (精确定位) the house he was looking for. He flew on regardless.
As Boyers controlled the helicopter, Among began searching for people caught out on rooftops, bridges — anywhere they could land and get them on board. Suddenly, she saw a teenager trapped in a tree. The teen, soaking wet and exhausted, was barely out of the water. Since there was no place to land, Boyers lowered the helicopter until it approached to just above the water line. Among jumped out and swam to the tree, where she helped the teen into the helicopter. The teen was shaking and looking behind anxiously when she said, “Thank you so much, but my sister and uncle ... please help them ...”
Boyers dropped off the teen on a patch of land across the street. Then he and Among were back in the air.

When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog. His mom Octavia refused since raising a dog would need lots of attention and care.
The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where Octavia taught. And the mother was in charge of the club. One morning, guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a forest. During the hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye. Evan thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother. So he walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers. Unfortunately, Evan got separated from the group and got lost.
He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the group. Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan thought it might be a wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he saw its tail wagging (摇摆) gently.
“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog. “You must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh ” The dog looked at him with the most sincere expression. Evan wanted to find his way home, not only for himself but also for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began looking for Evan desperately, but in vain.
It was getting darker and colder. Evan discovered a cave. He went inside and made a fire to keep warm. He knew his mom and other schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him. “Buddy, let’s wait here and see if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the dog. And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.
At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their shelter. The dog was growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another animal growling back. Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to himself, “Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The fox moved forward, wanting to attack Evan.

参考答案:
1.
The terrible shaking eventually stopped. I could finally walk to our children’s room. My wife had been standing over them during the strongest part of the earthquake, making sure nothing fell on them. After such a big earthquake, we expected the “smaller” aftershocks to be still very strong. There was still a chance that the building could collapse. So we decided to grab some essentials, especially the flashlight, and get the kids out of the building as quickly as possible.
Once we were ready, we woke the kids up. Carrying some basic things, we began to walk nervously and carefully down the emergency stairs. Thanks to the flashlight, we went down all 22 floors of the stairs without tripping. Along the way, I prayed that the earthquake would not happen again. When we finally arrived at the ground floor, I was relieved. Many other people had already arrived, some in pajamas, some half-dressed. The good news was that everyone got out of the building safe and sound.

Fortunately, Lucky was there all the time and never stopped barking for help. First, the tiny dog tried to wake her owner up by licking his face, but it didn’t work. Then she grabbed Robert’s clothes in her mouth to drag him out of the rocks, but still in vain. When she noticed the nearby snake, she barked restlessly to stop it from attacking Robert. The dog’s barking, echoing in the mountains, was so loud that two passers-by were attracted to come near the spot. Hearing someone above, Lucky ran up the hill to lead them to his injured owner.
After seeing unconscious Robert, the two strangers managed to wake himup. Without delay, they called for help and then dragged him out of the rocks with great strength. Breathing a sigh of relief, they gave Robert water and checked his head injury. Before the medical help arrived, they kept Robert warm and told him it was his dog that saved him. Looking down into Lucky’s loving eyes, Robert knew he had made the right decision in choosing Lucky as his companion. He realized that his dog’s energy was more than something he just needed. I posted my situation onto my Facebook, hoping anyone might read it and help. The responses from a few local friends and even strangers were overwhelming, all of whom were deeply concerned about my safety and offering assistance. One friend in particular, who lived a few miles away, said he would try to reach out to nearby farmers. My phone’s battery was running low, so I used it sparingly, updating those who were trying to coordinate a rescue and praying that someone could reach me before the night got even colder.
“I can’t drive,” the old farmer replied, “I walked here after my son phoned me about everything.” Despite my astonishment at how he braved the storm on foot, I felt an overwhelming relief knowing I wasn’t alone anymore. There were hundreds of people standing behind me and acting as my strongest bedrock. The farmer, with years of experience and expertise in dealing with blizzards, guided me to his home, where his family welcomed me with open arms and a warm meal. Wrapped in the kindness of these strangers (now friends), I waited out the tempest, snug within their farmhouse until the morning rescue crews could finally excavate my car from the grips of the snowdrifts.

After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum. If that’s what you think is best,” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.

I’ll get you to the shore.” “Easier said than done,” John thought to himself. “This man’s big.” He helped the man get on his board.
Fortunately, the sea was not rough and there was no wave. As John reached the shallow water, willing hands appeared to help carry the man ashore. John sat down and began to recover his breath. Seconds later, they spotted two people on the roof of a destroyed house. They looked desperate, shouting loudly to the helicopter, “Help, help!” Boyers flew over to them and carefully lowered the helicopter near the victims. The pitched roof offered no room for him to land, so he had to attempt a risky balancing act. Suddenly, there was a gust of wind, and the helicopter shifted. They held their breath. Fortunately, they managed to save the victims, transporting them to a safe place nearby.
Their mission ended 90 minutes after it began, when professional rescue teams showed up. It was good timing, too, since they were almost out of fuel after rescuing 17 people. As for the woman who originally contacted Boyers, she called back to say that, due to their efforts, her brother and his two daughters had also been saved. Though the experience was frightening, Boyers did make this confession to others afterward: “I don’t want to lie. It was almost a little fun, and I feel proud of what we did.”

Eventually, the fox left; the dog stopped growling but stayed aware. Minutes later, the dog eased and returned to Evan’s side, providing much-needed warmth. Evan felt safe and so thankful. When day broke, Evan continued walking to look for his group, and the dog accompanied him. At last, he heard his mom yelling out his name.
