18 years ago, a 14-year-old boy from Kasungu district in Malawi was forced to drop out of school for lack of fees. At the same time, a severe famine was destroying his village, claiming people’s lives and leaving desperation in its wake.
This was a situation to break the strongest of minds but William Kamkwamba did not give up. Young as he was, he knew that education was where his future lay. He found hope in the library and feasted on the knowledge that he harvested from its books. It was there that he came, across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that, if mastered, this power could help his village in exceptional ways.
Armed with determination and an iron will, the teenager set out to build a windmill out of random materials from a scrapyard (垃圾场). Though his outside world was collapsing to dust, the youngster did not hesitate about his purpose. He defended himself from all doubt and criticism. He worked tirelessly until his dream of bringing electricity to his village became reality. Soon, he was caught in the center of media attention that took him to new places that he would never have stepped on without his invention.
In his village, the dust has not settled yet and the winds of change continue to blow across the land. Windmills pump water to irrigate crops, sweeping away another period of hunger. William’s former primary school boasts new and stronger buildings, thanks to the help of well-wishers and the villagers’ united efforts.
What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune is set in stone. William refused to be a school drop-out forever. He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got tough. He was able to rise above poverty to become a graduate from one of America’s best universities, Dartmouth College.
24. What inspired William to bring electricity to his village
A. His realization of the impact of electricity.
B. The science textbook entitled Using Energy.
C. His awareness of the role of education.
D. The severe famine destroying his village.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. All people didn’t support William’s dream at first.
B. The public had little interest in William’s invention.
C. The invention enabled William to make a big fortune.
D. The windmill is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
26. What does the underlined words “set in stone” in the last paragraph mean
A. Visible. B. Avoidable. C. Unpredictable. D. Unchangeable.
27. What message does the author want to convey in this story
A. Knowledge feasts mind and education promises wealth.
B. Necessity inspires invention and hardship makes heroes.
C. Criticism promotes success and doubt facilitates creation.
D. Adversity motivates inspiration and support pushes solutions.

Scientists have found a way to decode (解码) a stream of words in the brain using MRI scans and artificial intelligence. The system reconstructs the main point of what a person hears or imagines, rather than trying to copy each word, a team reports. “It’s getting at the ideas behind the words, the meaning.” says Alexander Huth, an author of the study.
Previous efforts to decode language have relied on sensors placed directly on the surface of the brain. The sensors detect signals in areas involved in expressing words. But the Texas team’s approach is an attempt to “decode more freeform thought,” says Marcel Just, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.
The new study came about as part of an effort to understand how the brain processes language. Researchers had three people spend up to 16 hours each in a functional MRI scanner which detects signs of activity across the brain. Participants wore headphones that streamed audio from the Internet. Those streams of words produced activity all over the brain, not just in areas associated with speech and language. After participants listened to hours of stories in the scanner, the MRI data was sent to a computer. It learned to match specific patterns of brain activity with certain streams of words. Then came a paraphrased version of what a participant heard.
The MRI approach is currently slower and less accurate than an experimental communication system being developed for paralyzed people, where people get a sheet of electrical sensors implanted directly on the surface of the brain. With an MRI-based system, no one has to get surgery.
But future versions of MRI scans could raise moral questions. “What if you can read out the word that somebody is just thinking in their head That’s potentially a harmful thing.” Huth says. This technology can’t really read minds uncontrollably, though. It only works when a participant is actively cooperating with scientists. Still, systems that decode language could someday support people who are unable to speak because of a brain injury or disease. They are also assisting scientists in understanding how the brain processes words and thoughts.
28. What is special about the Texas team’s study
A. Brain can be reconstructed. B. Expression can be perfected.
C. Sensor signals can be improved. D. Meanings can be comprehended.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Steps of word matching. B. Patterns of brain activity.
C. The process of an experiment. D. The way of speech decoding.
30. What can be implied about MRI scans from the last paragraph
A. They are a double-edged sword.
B. They are well worth researching.
C. They are helpful to treat brain disease.
D. They are potentially harmful to life.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Decoder That Can Convey Meaning.
B. MRI Scanner: Bridge Message Gap.
C. A Decoder That Can Read Your Mind.
D. MRI Scanner: Still a Long Way to Go.
D
An increase in a country’s working-age population is a blessing. Lots of workers support relatively few children and retired people. So long as the labor market can absorb an increasing number of job-seekers, output per head will rise. That can boost savings and investment (投资), leading to higher economic growth, more productivity gains and developmental speed-up. Yet for countries that fail to seize this opportunity, the results can be tough.
Consider Thailand. It is rapidly aging. In 2021, the share of Thais aged 65 or over hit 14%, a figure that is often used to define an aged society. Soon Thailand will, like Japan, South Korea and most Western countries, see a decreasing supply of workers and declining productivity and growth without extraordinary measures. Yet unlike Japan and the rest, Thailand is not a developed country. It has got old before it has got rich.
This is a big barrier to Thailand’s future development. To protect its aging citizens, many of whom are poor, Thailand’s government will have to spend more on health care and pensions (养老金). This will make it harder to invest in productivity-boosting skills and infrastructure. And where Thailand goes, many developing countries will follow.
One conclusion is that countries with a working-age burst (爆发) need seeking more economic growth out of it. India may never have a better chance than the present. It is widely accepted that privatization and looser foreign-investment rules could raise its growth rate.
Another conclusion is that developing countries need to start planning for old age earlier. They should reform their pension systems, including by raising retirement ages. They should encourage financial markets, providing options for long-term saving and health insurance. And they should try harder to increase female participation in the labor force. Getting more women into jobs would help deal with the fact that women live longer than men, but tend to have less savings and pensions, leaving them in different situations in old age.
32. What does “opportunity” in the first paragraph refer to
A. Reducing support for children and the elderly.
B. Providing more jobs for working-age laborers.
C. Encouraging investment for economic growth.
D. Increasing economic output and labor productivity.
33. Why is aging considered a barrier to Thailand’s future development
A. It causes a shortage of young workers.
B. It forces the country to invest in infrastructure.
C. It leads to less investment in economic development.
D. It increases the burden on the working-age population.
34. Why is it important for developing countries to involve more women in labor force
A. To extend women’s retirement ages.
B. To encourage women to be included in health insurance.
C. To equalize the number of men and women in the workplace.
D. To settle the conflict between women’s long lifespan and small pension.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Planning ahead for aging societies.
B. Aging problems in developing countries.
C. Challenges and opportunities of aging societies.
D. The role of female labors in addressing the aging issue.

Scientists have discovered many uses for peppers. Called capsaicin (辣椒素), it’s the main ingredient in pepper spray. 36 In smaller quantities, capsaicin can relieve pain, help with weight loss and possibly affect microbes in the gut (肠道) to keep people healthier. Now how cool is that
Capsaicin triggers a rush of stress hormones. 37 It can also make someone feel energized. Some people enjoy this feeling. But there is another reason why peppers show up on dinner plates around the world. When food sits out in warm weather, microbes on the food start to multiply. If people eat food with too many of these germs, they risk getting very sick. The cold temperature inside a refrigerator stops most microbes from growing. 38 But long ago, those appliances weren’t available. Peppers were. Their capsaicin and other chemicals, it turns out, can slow or stop microbial growth.
39 However, a person can’t simply eat hot, spicy food and expect to lose pounds. A drug is being created to make the body burn through fat more quickly than usual. A primary ingredient: Capsaicin. A study showed that mice that ate a high-fat diet containing capsaicin did not gain extra weight. 40
A. Peppers also may help people lose weight.
B. These will make the skin redden and sweat.
C. Some people use this weapon for self-defense.
D. Peppers do much more than burn people’s mouths.
E. But a group of mice that ate only the high-fat diet became obese.
F. That’s why most people today rely on refrigerators to keep their food fresh.
G. Next time you see a pepper on a plate, take a deep breath, and then take a bite.
