2. Do you love street food I'm sure you do! What makes the food sweet Sugar, of course! Do you know anything about sugar Most sugar comes from sugar cane(甘蔗). This kind of plant is very tall.
How do we make sugar from sugar cane
First, farmers cut the top of the plant and put part of the plant in the earth. This will grow into more sugar cane.
Next, workers make the sugar cane into big machines. One machine washes the cane. One machine cuts and turns the cane over and over. And one machine gets the sweet juice from the cane.
Then, workers make the juice hot and it becomes thick(浓稠的). The thick juice is called syrup(糖浆). Workers put the syrup into the crystallization tank(结晶罐). It turns to crystals(晶体). We need one more machine to dry the crystals. Now we have sugar.
Sugar can be brown or white. It can also be in different sizes. Then the sugar can go to the sweet factory(工厂). There workers use it to make sweets.
(1) Where do most sugar come from?______________________________________
(2) What is the thick juice called?______________________________

3. Giant pandas are China's treasure and are loved by people worldwide. In February, pandas including Xiang Xiang and Yong Ming have come back home. Before this, they were on loan(出借) to Japan.
Since the early 1980s, China has stopped sending pandas as gifts because of their falling numbers. In the 1990s, China started 10-year loans(出借) of pandas to other countries. Today about 60 pandas are living in other countries.
This may lead you to question: How do overseas(海外的) zoos make sure they can give the pandas a comfortable life
Wei Rongping, the head of the Wolong Shenshuping panda base in Sichuan, told that overseas zoos need to meet a few conditions(条件). For example, there must be a healthy and safe environment for pandas to live in. Take Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen, Netherlands as an example. In 2017, to welcome pandas Xing Ya and Wu Wen, the zoo built a Chinese-style panda house called Pandasia. It gives a panda couple a clinic (诊疗所), a cold bamboo storage room and a nursery for when they are ready to have babies.
Also, a giant panda may eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo in a day. The zoo must give pandas enough food. Pandas Si Hai and Jing Jing traveled to Al Khor Park in Qatar in 2022. Every week, the park buys 1,000 kg of fresh bamboo from their hometown, Sichuan. Breeders(饲养员) there even learn the Sichuan dialect(方言) to talk to the pandas.

(2) How many pandas are still living in other countries
(3) What conditions should oversee zoos meet to borrow pandas
(4) What is Pandasia according to the passage

My name is Daniel. I live in a small house in a town called Kingston.
I love to visit Highgrove Road. This road has a lot of big houses, and some even look like palaces. Highgrove Road is next to a beach. I love to sit on the beach and dream what these houses look like inside.
My favourite house is a pink house at the end of the road. In my dreams this house has at least four sitting rooms and two dining rooms, all on the ground floor. One dining room is for the family and the other one is for friends. It has a really big kitchen next to the dining rooms. The house has three bedrooms on the first floor and five bedrooms on the second floor. Each bedroom has a bathroom with a toilet, a sink, a bath and a shower. The house is very tidy and quiet. Sometimes you can hear the sound of the sea or the sound of the rain on the roof, if the weather is bad. In front of the house, there is a big garden with a swimming pool. It is the biggest swimming pool in the whole town. A friendly family lives in this house and they often invite friends over to use their swimming pool.
My dream is to live in a house just like this. My mother thinks I should stop dreaming and start studying for my exams!

8. "Chinese Dream" is a hot topic. Many Chinese young people are inspired by Chinese Dream. Everyone has his or her own dreams. They give us courage and confidence to keep us going through difficulties. Here is some advice on how to realize our beautiful dreams.
Never giving up is the key to making our dreams come true. We may fail from time to time, but we can learn from failure, correct our mistakes and try again until we achieve our goals. Our life is like a long journey which is not full of roses. It sometimes has wind and rain. We believe rainbows will appear(出现) after storms.
Cooperation is also necessary. Everyone likes a person who is good at cooperating with others. Besides, in our society most problems can't be solved(解决) by one person alone. Cooperation is becoming one of the most important ways for people living in the developing society.
At the same time, we should learn to examine our abilities because it helps us know our advantages (优点) and disadvantages. Then we may be confident enough to face challenges.
Follow the suggestions above, and our dreams are sure to come true.

9.
If you walk through a park in the morning or in the evening, you might see a lot of people doing these slow and beautiful movements. In fact, they are doing Tai Chi(太极).
Tai Chi is an ancient(古代的) martial art (武术). It is a common(常见的) kind of exercise in China. More than 100 million people in over 150 countries practise Tai Chi at present. Recently UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) has added Tai Chi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录). Many Tai Chi fans were happy to hear of it. "This will make Tai Chi more popular around the world. Hopefully, more people will become healthier by practising it." said Chen Bin. He is a Tai Chi master from the village of Chenjiagou, Henan Province. This village is the birthplace of Chen-style Tai Chi.
It's true that doing Tai Chi is good for our health. It can make us walk and move more freely, and it can also make us stronger. During slow movements, we can focus on (专注) our hands and feet. We can control them better.
Tai Chi also focuses on the harmony (和谐) between yin (阴) and yang (阳). It shows how the ancient Chinese people saw the world. The world is full of yin and yang, dark and light, soft and hard, female and male. But they don't oppose (对立) each other completely. As we see in the picture, a white spot is in the black area and a black spot is in the white area. After a dark night, the sun will rise. Leaves fall in autumn but grow in spring. Everything keeps changing—that is how we should see the world.
Tai Chi carries traditional Chinese philosophy(哲学), such as being in harmony with nature and using softness to beat hardness. It has become a symbol(象征) of Chinese culture.
(1) How many people practise Tai Chi in the world now?
(2) What are the movements of Tai Chi like?
(3) Would you like to try Tai Chi or not? Why?
10. Every year on March 5, China celebrates "Lei Feng Day". It's a day to encourage community service and volunteering.
Lei Feng was a soldier (士兵) in the People's Liberation Army. He died in 1962, aged 22. His short life was filled with "selfless (无私的) service for the people", reported China Daily.
As a non-Chinese person, I learned about Lei Feng once I came to China. The lesson was quite memorable (记忆深刻的).
One day, I was riding my bicycle down the street and a tire burst (车胎爆裂). A passer-by asked if I needed any help. He kindly guided me to a nearby bike stand for repair (修理). Once we got there, I thanked him and asked what his name was in Chinese. He said, "I'm Lei Feng." Not knowing who Lei Feng was, I replied, "Well, thank you, Lei Feng." He and the others at the bike repair stand burst out laughing. I stood there confused (困惑的). Why were they all laughing
A few months later, our Chinese teacher told us about Lei Feng, this hero of small acts of kindness and community spirit. I remembered the guy who helped me with my bicycle. Then it was my turn to laugh.
After this, I began to notice Lei Feng's image (形象) on cultural souvenirs (纪念品) in local tourist shops. Keeping yourself safe is very important. So when you are going to a bus stop or coming back from an underground station, please walk on the sidewalk(人行道).
You should walk across the street on the zebra crossing. Here is the safest place for you to walk across and then wait for the lights to turn green.
It is very important to look left, right and left again before you cross the street. Don t cross it with cars and buses running. If you must do so, stop and look carefully first.
Don t run across the street because the cars and buses are running quickly. They may hurt you. If you see a car, let it go first. It is a good idea to wear clothes in bright colours. 12. There is a rule in Hubei Province launched in 2022—people who abandon (遗弃) dogs or cats may face fines (罚款) of between 1, 000 yuan and 5, 000 yuan. It also required that local governments need to take care of them. Residents (居民) are also not allowed to keep "large and dangerous" dogs. People who are against the rule will be fined up to 10, 000 yuan, and their dogs will be taken away.
Du Fan, a director of the Small Animal Protection Association in Wuhan said that he supported the rule because it can help protect animals. In the course of their work, these things happen a lot, but there is no related laws or rules to stop it before. They saved more than 700 lost, abandoned and injured (伤害) dogs and cats one year.
He also pointed out that people abandon their pets for different reasons such as moving to other cities or their owners simply didn't want to keep them anymore. All these problems are never caused by the animals, but by people. To help solve that problem he has suggested the Wuhan legislature (立法机构) to give digital IDs to pets. It can help know how the animals live.
"Such rules could lead more people to be more careful before deciding to have a pet. And I hope it can help make abandoned cats and dogs become fewer and fewer," said Zhang Li, a pet owner.

We finished our work, took photos and talked with some people about their life. One old man said he remembered how students used to do helpful work in the street. An old lady told us that when they were young, she and her friends did a lot of simple things to help others. They helped people carry things or fix broken chairs at school. "But things changed then. The young students really don't understand the spirit(精神) of Lei Feng, " she continued. "They do good things because they are told to and they take photos to put on the school website. "Her words made me think that we were told to do things to help others on Lei Feng Memorial Day. But neither love nor care came from our own hearts. We should believe that they can make a difference. We don't need cameras or praise. We can do better if we keep the spirit of Lei Feng inside ourselves. "Learning from Lei Feng" shouldn't be a passing fad(一时的风尚). 15. Most children have wonderful toys to play with. Usually, their parents buy these toys for them, often as Christmas or birthday gifts. Some children buy small toys with their pocket money. But instead of buying toys, one fun way to get new toys is to make them.
The easiest toy to make is a kite. For a kite, all you need is a large piece of paper, two sticks, some string and some glue. Take the two sticks and use the string to join them together in the centre. Then take a string and tie it to the ends of the sticks to make a string square. Cut the paper to make it the same size as the square. Finally, stick the paper to the string square with glue. Now your kite is finished. All you need to do is to tie a long string to the kite so you can fly it.
In many countries, they have kite-building competitions. Hundreds of people come together to show off their kites. In one famous competition, some of the kites are more than three metres tall. They take many strong men to fly them and use rope instead of string.
