Something strange has been happening to me lately: Women in the street have been telling me I'm brave.
My act of courage isn't much-I just stopped coloring my hair. I had brown hair that started going gray when I was 30. So, like a lot of women, I started dyeing (染)it. It was expensive and time-consuming. And my hair grows fast, so I needed to go back to the hair salon(美发厅) every 5 weeks.
Many people seem to enjoy holding onto their youth for as long as possible, giving off the impression that they don' t have much wisdom or many accomplishments. But our hair starts to turn gray and suddenly we start spending $500 or more a year to cover something our male colleagues don’t need to cover.
Of course, People should do what they want with their own body -my mother is 91 and still has "blond" hair, and why not I just wish more of us would feel that it was OK to be ourselves, because going gray has done more for me than saving me time and money.
I like my natural hair, just as it is. I like how it has got curly and full again. It is recovering after years of being damaged by chemicals. I also like that it has given me some needed attitude in a society that makes youth seem so important, while being against maturity. It reminds me that I'm not a kid anymore - and this isn't a bad thing. Not being a kid anymore means I read the books I want, and not the books i feel I should read. It means not wasting my time at events I don' t need to attend when I’d rather be with my family and friends.
When I see my hair in the mirror, it's a reminder that my time is limited, and I should spend it doing what matters. There's nothing shameful about growing older And pretending it's not happening is a way of giving up our power.
I see my gray hair as a little act of rebellion(反叛)against the idea that people lose value as they age, instead of gaining it. I see gray hair as my "flag" and I'm letting it fly proudly.
4. How does the author feel about coloring hair
A. It shows people’s great courage.
B. It is a good way to hold onto youth.
C. It shows wisdom and accomplishments.
D. It is not worth the time and money spent on it.
5. What should we do when we grow old according to the author
A. Give up our power.
B. Pretend to be still young.
C. Accept it and act positively.
D. Read as many books as possible.
6. What is the authors main purpose in writing this passage
A. To explain why youth is valued.
B. To share her opinion on growing older.
C. To stress the importance of different attitudes.
D. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of aging.
7. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. Holding Onto Youth
B. Dyeing Your Hair
C. Gaining Value With Age
D. Valuing Wisdom Of Age
D 5. C 6. B 7. D
I just wish more of us would feel that it was OK to be ourselves, because going gray has done more for me than saving me time and money.
There's nothing shameful about growing older. And pretending it’s not happening is a way of giving up our power.
I see my gray hair as a little act of rebellion(反叛)against the idea that people lose value as they age, instead of gaining it.
C
Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing — shopping. And that can be a big problem.
“In a way, over-consumption (过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems,” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It’s held on the day, which is known as Black Friday — a famous shopping day in the US and Canada.
You can see the irony (讽刺) here.
Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 26 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of pollution in our lives today — bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean — seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.
The latest example is the Singles’ Day shopping craze of Nov 11, which saw a new sales record. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters, “Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste.” And it was reported that last year the Singles’ Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins Dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that there’re too many things we tow out after only using them once.
So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it’s not just to remind us to the a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun “with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.
8. What’s the authors purpose of writing the first paragraph
A. To express the people’s love for all festivals.
B. To talk about the meaning of the festivals.
C. To appreciate the value of the festivals.
D. To bring out the topic of the passage.
9. Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day
A. To help people save money. B. To cut the cost for daily life.
C. To prevent over-consumption. D. To set up a new sales record.
10. What’s Nie Li’s attitude towards the shopping craze
A. Opposed (反对的). B. Supportive.
C. Unknown. D. Neutral (中立的).
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Creating a New Lifestyle B. Buy Nothing Day
C. Festivals Around the World D. A Change in People’s Life
D 9. C 10. A 11. B
由第一段“Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing — shopping. And that can be a big problem.(每个节日都有自己的意义。
由第二段中的“‘In a way, over-consumption (过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems,’ Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event.(‘从某种意义上说,过度消费是我们所有环境问题的根源,’Kalle Lasn曾告诉CNN。Lasn是‘无需购买日’的组织者,该日于1992年在加拿大设立,旨在打击不健康的消费习惯,现在已成为一项国际活动)”可知,Lasn认为过度消费是所有环境问题的根源,Lasn成立Buy Nothing Day,旨在与不健康的消费习惯作斗争,所以Lasn成立此节日的目的是防止过度消费。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。由第五段中的“But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters, ‘Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste.’(但正如Greenpeace组织的活动家Nie Li对路透社所说,‘创纪录的消费意味着创纪录的浪费”)”可知,Greenpeace组织的活动家Nie Li认为创纪录的过度消费意味着创纪录的浪费,可知Nie Li对购物狂潮(the shopping craze)持反对态度。故选A项。
由文章第一段“Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing — shopping. And that can be a big problem.(每个节日都有它自己的意义。
D
I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable and friendly.
However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand. On a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence, sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was scolded in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat ---- it had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine (真诚的) mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to interrupt someone else’s privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.
12. What do we know about the occupants when the author was travelling in Italy
A. They were all on the side of the gentleman.
B. They all laughed at the author for his mistake.
C. They would not bear a mistake like the author’s in public
D. They all showed their understanding of the author’s mistake.
13. How does the author finally believe the Italian people are
A. Cold. B. Rude C. Helpful. D. Hospitable.
14. Why did English passengers sit in near silence according to the last paragraph
A. They were too tired to speak to anyone.
B. They were all strangers to each other.
C. Privacy was a valued tradition in England.
D. Everybody was deeply lost in though.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Different Ways of Hospitality and Politeness
B. Co-understanding Each Other
C. My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad
D. The Importance of Privacy
D 13. D 14. C 15. A
由第三段“The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome among them”可知,车厢里所有的人都对作者点头微笑,说明他们理解作者的错误,对作者的错误很宽容。
由第三段“He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey”可知,老人自己站着,让作者坐着,其他的人也都友好地微笑。
由最后一段“We sat together in near silence.Nobody spoke to me nor,as I expected,to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else's privacy”可知,英国乘客都不说话,因为他们国家的传统认为探究别人的隐私是很不礼貌的。
故选A项。

Eight-year-old Evan stood by the sidewalk watching as Mrs. Carter opened her flower shop. He felt relieved that the shop hadn’t closed forever. Two days ago, when he passed by, there was a closed sign on the door and a note saying Mrs. Carter was sick. Evan was worried that he would never be able to get his “dream job” if the shop remained closed for too long.
Mrs. Carter, an 85-year-old woman, spotted Evan looking in her shop’s direction and waved hello to him. Excitedly, Evan ran up to her and expressed his desire to work at the shop. Mrs.Carter laughed quietly, finding it amusing that an eight-year-old wanted a job. Evan confidently explained that since his dad passed away, he had learned how to do various tasks, like taking out the rubbish, making sandwiches, and assisting his mom, Stacey, with groceries. He didn’t want any payment for his work; instead, he simply wanted a bouquet (花束) for his mom’ s upcoming birthday. He believed in working hard for what he wanted, just as his mom had taught him.
Impressed by Evan’s determination, Mrs. Carter agreed to hire him. She asked if he knew how to tie ribbons around flowers, and when she heard Evan’s affirmative(肯定的) response, they got down to making bouquets. Evan was excited to assist Mrs. Carter every evening for a whole week, and his presence brought joy to her boring work.Customers found Evan adorable and entertaining, which resulted in increased flower purchases and booming business for Mrs. Carter.
On Evan’s last day, Mrs.Carter felt emotional. Their bond had grown strong, and she saw him as a grandchild. As she prepared a splendid bouquet for Evan’s mother, tears welled up in her eyes. She invited him to visit her shop in the future, and Evan promised to tell his mom about her.

With the bouquet in hand, Evan rushed home to celebrate Mom’s birthday. On seeing the gift, his mom was astonished. The bouquet was huge and looked expensive. Rather than being happy about it, she wondered where Evan had gotten it. “Evan Where did you get the money for this ” she asked, worried. With a big smile on his face, Evan told her the whole story and explained that he had once overheard Stacey’s conversations, learning she didn’t buy herself things to save money for him, so he made up his mind to give Mom a special gift for her birthday. Hearing the heartfelt words, mom was moved. She embraced him tightly, expressing her love and gratitude.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside. Worried that Mrs. Carter had made a mistake, Evan suggested returning the money. They went to the flower shop immediately and handed the envelope back to Mrs. Carter. Smiling warmly, Mrs. Carter explained that it wasn’t a mistake but a birthday gift for Evan’s mother. She insisted they keep it, saying it was Evan’s affection for his mom that touched her and that she decided to lend a hand. Moved by Mrs. Carter’s kindness, mom invited her for dinner that night and they celebrated Stacey’s birthday together.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside. They hurriedly returned to the flower shop to let Mrs. Carter know how they appreciated her kindness but couldn’t accept the money because of mom’s firm belief-one should stand on his own feet. Mrs. Carter’s eyes were filled with admiration for the Stacey’s independence. She proposed a solution: Stacey could work at the flower shop whenever it was convenient. Mom’s face lit up with joy as she gladly accepted the offer. Stacey invited Mrs. Carter to dinner, not just as a birthday celebration but also as a way to express her gratitude to Mrs. Carter for everything she had done.

A. Opposed (反对的). B. Supportive.
C. Unknown. D. Neutral (中立的).

C. Festivals Around the World D. A Change in People’s Life

Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know.
B. Co-understanding Each Other
C My Unforgettable Travelling Experience Abroad
D. The Importance of Privacy
