Teaching Objectives
By the end of the class, students are able to:
1. Language objectives:
(1) Get the main idea and some specific information of the passage.
(2) Introduce endangered animals in English.
2. Ability objectives:
(1)Practise some reading skills like skimming, scanning and summarizing.
(2) Learn to study cooperatively through groupworks.
3. Quality objectives:
(1) Develop logic thinking by analysing the structure of the passage and completing the mind-map;
(2) Develop further thinking by inferring btween the lines.
4. Cultural awareness objectives:
(1) Improve students’ knowledge about pandas and other endangered animals.
(2) Improve students’ awareness of animal protection.
Focal points:
1. Skim the passage for the main ideas.
2. Scan the passge for some specific information.
3. Make a poster to call on more people to save endangered animals.
Difficult points:
1. Get the information between the lines.
2. Make a poster to call on more people to save endangered animals.
Teaching procedures
Stage 1 Lead-in (2 minutes)
Play a video of Bing Dwen Dwen and ask the students what animal it is based on and why we choose it as the mascot of the Winter Olympics.
Purpose: to lead in the topic and motivate students’ learning interests.
Stage 2 Pre-reading (2 minutes)
Talk about pandas in class.
Purpose: to improve students’ knowledge about pandas so that they can have a better background knowledge of the passage.
Stage3 While-reading (20 minutes)
Step1: Read the passage quickly and match the main idea of each part.
Purpose: to use the reading skill “skimming” to grasp the main idea of each part of the passage.
Step2 :
Read part I (para.1-2) and answer the questions.
2. Ask students to think further and answer the question: 1. What do you think of pandas according to the verb phrases in this paragraph 2. What do you think of the life of pandas at Chengdu Research Base
Purpose:
to find out some specific information in part1.
to cultivate students’ ability of further reading.
Step3:Listen to para3 and find out the meaning of these numbers.
Purpose: to improve students’ reading ability by getting specific information using the reading skill “scanning”.
Step4: Read para3 again and finish the mind-map to find out the reasons why pandas are endangered.
Purpose: to learn to summarize the information from the passage with the mind-map.
Step 5: Read para.4 and fill in the table to find out the solutions.
Purpose: to practice students’ reading skill “scanning” and the thinking ability of classifying.
Stage 4 Post-reading (15minutes)
Step1: Discuss other ways we can do to save pandas.
Purpose: to open students’ mind and think of other ways to save pandas and let them get ready to make a poster to save pandas.
Step2: Work in groups and make a poster to call on more people to save pandas.
Purpose:
1.to consolidate the expressions and structure of the passage and improve students’ awareness of protecting pandas.
2. to train the students’ ability of working in a group.
Step3 watch a video about some other endangered animals and guide students to know the importance of animal protection.
Purpose: to improve students’ awareness of animal protection.
Stage5 Homework (1 minute)
Assign the homework to the students: Search for more information of endangered animals and choose one to introduce in class.
Purpose:
1.to lead students to know more about endangered animals and have a right attitude to animals and the nature.
2.to let students use what we learned in class to express their ideas.
