(2023·福建南平·校联考模拟预测)Last year, I worked as a young marketing person in a company. The day was filled with tasks: preparing for meetings, answering sales calls and booking hotels. The list was endless. By the end of the day, I was not only tired but also angry with myself and everyone around me. It was at this time that Paul invited me to his house to chill out.
Although tired, I was excited to chat with Paul and learn from his rich experience in marketing. As I entered his house, Paul started singing a song: I have a dream, a song to sing, to help me cope with anything ... I didn’t want to listen to his singing. I wanted to hear about how he dealt with sales calls.
As I was ready to tell him about that, I was surprised at what I saw next. Two young girls walked over to Paul. They could neither walk steadily (稳步地) nor speak. Their faces were full of smiles when they heard the song.
I asked Paul who these girls were. Paul explained, “I also have a dream to make these girls happy. They are my daughters and they were born with special diseases.” And he further added, “Their mother died when they were very young.”
I was moved to tears. In the office, no one knew what Paul was going through in his personal life. He never wanted his friends to take pity on him. In fact, he always helped us and encouraged us to move forward in life. He was always positive. He was full of hope and energy all the time.

(2023·福建厦门·福建省同安第一中学校考模拟预测)I arrived at my mother’s home for our Saturday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. I knew they were all made herself. She was preparing for a quilt show on TV. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What’s this ” I asked.
“Oh ” Mom said. “That’s Mama’s quilt.”
I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had made the pieces together.
“Grandmother made this ” I asked in surprise. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.
“Yes, right before she died, I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” Mom said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made a line straight. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched a piece of cloth with these words, “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
“Oh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. I was sure now that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

There are many stories which show filial (孝顺的) respect in ancient China. Stories like “Taste Liquid (液体的) Medicine for Mother” of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty not only tell us the filial virtue (美德) but also reminds us the greatest love we get from our parents. The selfless love from a mother is also a popular theme in poetry. The poem Song of the Parting Son, written by Tang Dynasty poet Meng Jiao (751-814), is one example.
From the threads a mother’s hand weaves,
A gown for parting son is made.
Sewn stitch by stitch before he leaves,
For fear his return be delayed.
Such kindness as young grass receives,
From the warm sun can’t be repaid.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
The poem presents a scene from everyday life: A mother sewing clothes for her son. Here Meng uses two everyday items (物品), the thread and the needle, to compare the close relationship between mother and son. They are always bound to each other. When the son is traveling far away, the mother is afraid that his return will be delayed. So she carefully sews the gown stitch (一针) by stitch. In the last two lines, the poet uses a metaphor (暗喻). He compares mothers to the warm sun in spring while offspring (后代) are like grass. It is hard for a child’s love to equal that of a mother’s.
Although this poem is about a mother’s selfless love for her son, we hope you enjoy the flow of emotions behind the lines. Whatever changes take place in society and life, love from parents will never change. So always remember to show filial piety to your parents for their selfless love and make efforts to improve virtue in our families.

(2023·福建泉州·模拟预测)Plants don’t suffer in silence-they get noisy. Scientists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have recorded noises made by plants, and the team think this can help identify (识别) whether the plants are healthy or stressed.
The six-year study focused on several plants, including tomato plants. The researchers put the plants in a soundproof (隔音的) greenhouse, then set up microphones about 10 centimeters from each one. The team recorded the sounds made by the plants in different conditions.
The study found that when plants are healthy, they make regular clicking and popping noises. However, when they had their stems (茎) cut or hadn’t been watered, the noises came in very quick bursts. The sounds were very high-pitched (声调高的), so they couldn’t be heard by human ears. Professor Lilach Hadany, who worked on the study, told the Guardian newspaper, “When these plants are in good shape, they produce less than one sound per hour, but when stressed they make many more, sometimes 30 to 50 per hour.” On average, “thirsty” tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour.
Using the recordings, the researchers trained a computer program. The program could identify the plant and the reason that it had become stressed. The program recognized 70% of the sounds correctly. One day, perhaps it could be used to look after plants better on farms by finding out when they need more water.
If farmers could understand these sounds, they could give water to the plants that need it most. As climate change causes more droughts (干旱), this would be important information for farmers. The sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture (精准农业).

About a year ago, this old man began to appear on my way to Tali Department Store every Saturday at noon. My lunch break is not very long, the store is some distance from my office, and my Saturday lunch is fairly expensive, so at first I just walked past him or paid no attention to him.
