Most people have an experience that they will never forget. For pilots Dave McMahon and Sydnie Uemoto, it involved a plane crash, and an ocean, which made them realize the meaning of life and cooperation.
As the twin-engine Piper Apache flew 5,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old pilot Sydnie Uemoto and her co-pilot, 26-year-old Dave McMahon, heard the strange sound of the engines.
Then, without warning, the pilots lost power to the right engine. A moment later, the left one went.
At about 1,000 feet and falling quickly, Uemoto made their last call. “We’re 25 miles northwest of Kona,” she said to air traffic control. “We’re going down.”
Then everything flashed white as the plane struck the surface of the ocean. McMahon and Uemoto were thrown forward violently.
“Sydnie, get out !”McMahon called.
As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared beneath the surface.
As the waves broke around them, McMahon and Ulemoto had done the impossible by suriving a crash landing into the ocean. Now they just had to stay put, swimming in the warm sea.
“When will the Coast Guard get here ” Uemoto asked.
“They’re coming,” McMahon said.
After a couple of hours, McMahon’s prediction seemed to come true. A Navy plane appeared in the sky, circling the area. It flew directly overhead as McMahon waved his life preserver (救生用具) overjoyed at the sight. However, the plane continued on its way without spotting them.
As the sun grew dark, McMahon became scared. He thought they were going to have to spend the night on the water.
“Hey, Dave ” Uemoto said softly at one point.
“Hey, Sydnie,” he called back.
When the sun rose that morning, the two pilots were greeted by a beautiful sight.

After almost 20 hours, Uemoto’s body finally ran out of power. Then Uemoto heard the sound of the helicopter. “It’s coming!” she shouted. “This is it, Sydnie,” McMahon said. McMahon and Uemoto waved their hands crazily. To their disappointment, the helicopter flew overhead and then flew away. They had no choice but to hug in the water because of their strong desire to survive. Alone, either of them would have died. However, they believed that if they could help each other in danger and never give up, they would make it. Eyes up, they were looking forward to seeing another helicopter.
A second helicopter (直升机) arrived ten minutes later. Seeing it, Uemoto and McMahon burst into tears, waving their life preservers. After a few moments, a rescuer lowered himself into the ocean, followed by a metal rescue basket that was tied to the helicopter. The rescuer guided Uemoto into the basket and, with a lift, she rose into the air and toward the safety of the helicopter. Then it was McMahon’s turn. “This is a story we’re going to tell our children and grandchildren,” said Uemoto.

Every fall, my family and I would mark dead trees, cut them down, haul (拉拽)the wood and store it in the basement. On Christmas eve, the basement was half full of dry wood. As usual, my sister Shelly and I were home from school, and she did as either of us had done a thousand times before: checked the stove in the hall, tossed a few more logs and slammed the stove door shut.
At the time, I was upstairs having a sink full of dishes to wash, homework to tackle and my grandfather, who was mentally disordered and hated by our family, to care for. Stomping(跺脚)around the kitchen, I thought about how I couldn’t wait to finish washing. The house seemed a little smoky, but that wasn’t unusual since it often went that way after the stove had new logs to chew up. I simply waved the smoke away and continued my business, meanwhile daydreaming of getting away from my grandfather. Suddenly, my sister Shelly hurried in and said, “Don’t you think it’s a little too smoky in here ” I shrugged, uttering nothing, and kept washing. But after another minute, I knew something went wrong.
Without a word to each other, we shot through the kitchen and stared in disbelief as smoke and flames boiled out from the hall. A flush of panic sweeping over me, I hurried Shelly to lead our grandfather out before I was ready to call 911. Unfortunately, my phone was dead. I glanced out the window and saw Shelly, in a sweeter, jeans and slippers and my grandfather, in pants, a T-shirt and socks, shivering in the bone-biting snow, with no place to await help. With the only neighbor living far away, we were likely to die in the freezing cold outside. But if we stayed inside, smoke would surely choke us. However, if I could get my grandfathers phone in his room and probably, if the flames didn’t spread far, there would be a slim chance of survival.

Though overwhelmed by extreme panic, I decided to take a chance. The house was engulfed in an immense stream of flame, with roaring fire almost swallowing me. Fully aware as I was that a long and tough journey was ahead, I wasn’t defeated. Rather, I stooped and inched forward. After what seemed like a century, I reached the destination, alive. As the smoke thickened, I felt my throat and lungs burning. Glancing around the room, I located the phone and grabbed it immediately. Before I could celebrate, raging fire prepared to chew me up.
Fire sent me into despair before the familiar figure of my grandfather came into my sight. Fearless and swift, he shot through the flames, behaving like an iron man. With unwavering determination, he seized me and rushed out. Suddenly, house beams collapsed, striking him down. I summoned all my strength to lift him to his feet and supported him out. Finally, we made it. After that, my grandfather murmured unconsciously, “Fire consumed the Christmas gift for you.” I felt a lump in my throat and whispered, “You are the best Christmas gift!” This unforgettable experience forever reminds me to cherish those who shower us with boundless love.

One sunny Saturday morning, I got ready for a hike with my classmates. I was so excited about it since it was my first time to go hiking. I ate a light breakfast just a few slices of bread and an egg. After that I grabbed my backpack and hurriedly ran out of my house and then met my classmates at the school gate. At that time I didn’t think that there would be a terrible disaster ahead.
The jungle (丛林) that we are going to was far from our area. Its name was Salymbia Jungle. The drive was 3 hours long but it was not a dull ride as we were all eager about the hike and we bad each other’s company. We appointed a guide and his name was Thomas. He said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times, and he was familiar with the pathways. When we arrived, Thomas allowed us to begin. There were a wide variety of plants which I had never seen before. The smell of the jungle was so earthy. All of us were amazed by the beauty of the scenery and the sound of the creatures.
After a while we were walking and then I looked at my wrist (手腕) to check the time but then I realized my watch had fallen off. Then I walked back without telling anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other persons behind and I thought I would have been able to catch up with my classmates. I went back searching the pathway and I lost track of time and lost sight of my classmates. I immediately realized that I was alone.
After I realized I was lost, the first thing I did was to check my phone to see how far away I was from my companions. However, I was having no luck because there was no network in my phone, which made my phone practically useless.

I decided to stay where I was, saving my energy until the rescue team arrived.
As I was falling asleep, I heard a human voice. I doubted my ears but then I heard someone else. I screamed, “Help!” There was a note of excitement in my voice. They were rescuers who had come searching for me because my classmates reported my loss. They took me back to the bus. The moment I saw my classmates, I couldn’t control my tears in my eyes. They kept asking if I was hurt and what had happened. When they learned I was safe, they were relieved. What an unforgettable experience!

Out of nowhere, Sophie appeared. “Let me help. I can easily crawl in and get Sam out,” she offered without a second thought. There was no time to waste. The policemen assisted Sophie to the window: “Jump! they told her in a determined tone.” We will drop you a rope ladder through the window." Without a moment’s hesitation, Sophie jumped through the window. Sam was sleeping soundly. Picking him up, Sophie put him on her back and tied him lightly to herself with a bed sheet. Slowly she scaled the ladder and peeped through the window
Then, Sophie carefully handed Sam to a policeman, and climbed out of the window. Loud cheers greeted Sophie. Seeing everyone clapping for her, Sophie was stunned to a halt and did not know what the fuss was all about. It was at this point that Gloria dragged Sophie to her and hugged her tightly. Feeling immensely grateful to Sophie, Gloria learned what mattered a lot was a person’s courage and humanity. Then she asked Sophie what reward she would like to have for her bravery. To her surprise, Sophie said in a low voice. “I want to have an opportunity to play with Sam.” Gloria told her that she could stay with her family as long as she wanted. On hearing this, Sophie gave a jump in the air, twirling round and round. At last she had a place to stay and play with little Sam.

The children’s journey began when they were flying with their mom from the village of Araracuara, to San Jose del Guaviare to visit their father. Their small plane had engine trouble, and crashed in the rainforest. Sadly, all three adults on the plane died, including the children’s mother.
This left the four children alone in the jungle. The oldest child was a 13-year-old girl. Next came a 9-year-old, a 4-year-old, and an 11-month-old baby. The children are members of the Indigenous Huitoto tribe The Huitotos live in the Amazon rainforest, so the children were familiar with some of the plants and fruits that could be found there.
At first, the children lived off flour made from plant roots. They had found the flour in the airplane ruins. When they ran out of flour, the children used their knowledge of the forest’s fruits and seeds to survive. Luckily, it was a time when many rainforest plants were producing fruits.
As soon as the plane went down, people started searching to see if anyone survived. After two weeks, the plane was found. The people searching found signs that the children might still be alive.
Rescue teams flew in helicopters and dropped boxes of food, hoping the children would find them. But they couldn’t see the ground because the forest was so thick. The helicopters even played a recorded message from the children’s grandmother, encouraging the kids to avoid moving around.
Over 150 soldiers were sent out with dogs to search on the ground. These teams left whistles around, hoping the children would find them and use them to make noise. Around 70 Indigenous volunteers also helped search. They saw all kinds of animals. However, what they didn’t spot were the kids, who were apparently scared by the soldiers and spent much of their time hiding from them.

At different points in time, the rescue teams found signs of the children. A bottle, a partly-eaten piece of fruit, and even a rough shelter made by the children. They called in more searchers, followed the trail left by the children, sped up the search and expanded the searching area. As the search progressed, more and more traces were found. All the searchers were excited and increasingly confident that the children were still alive. Despite the numerous searches, the children remained out of contact. However, the rescue teams never lost heart.
After more than a month, the searchers finally found the children. They were in a small clearing in the forest, about 15 kilometers from where the plane had crashed. The children were very weak, but they were alive. Everyone was extremely happy and relieved that the children were safe. The soldiers who found the children wrapped them in blankets and gave them drinks. A helicopter was used to lift the kids up and out of the rainforest. The story of the children’s survival has inspired many people. It has also shown how the knowledge and skills of Indigenous people can help in difficult times.

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No,” said Dad. “It’s too late: The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater. Let’s us leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do

Paragraph 1:
All of a sudden, the floodwater forced the door open. Shocked, frightened and extremely scared, Mary saw the floodwaters pouring into the room, leaving the dinner table upside down. She didn’t know what to do, trembling, and turned to her mum for help. An idea occurred to Mum that they had to go upstairs, because they had no choice but to save themselves at that moment, and it would be of great danger to stay in place before rescue came to them. Dad also rushed to the second floor without hesitation, not forgetting to take the bag containing important documents and disaster supplies.
Paragraph 2:
Being upstairs, they breathed a sigh of relief. However, the floodwater had flooded into the whole living room downstairs. They were all nervous and scared to see the floodwater rise further. Fortunately, what relieved them a little was that they prepared enough food and water supplies in advance. The rain was still raining non-stop. Mary and Mum became increasingly nervous while Dad kept giving them comfort and encouragement. Later, they learned from the radio that the government was organizing rescue groups to save people caught in their home by boat. Thinking they would be saved, they couldn’t be more excited. Until then, the easiness and warmth welled up in every corner of the room, seeming to make the floodwater outside less frightening outside. It doesn’t matter what you did when you were faced with tough situation, and what matters most is that you made a wise decision and well prepared.

It’s a beautiful sunny day. The Bonds boarded their boat for a carefree day trip to Dove Island for some fishing as a family custom. Thomas Bond, a 30-year-old construction worker, loved the sport, especially catching bass (鲈鱼) and had impressed on his oldest daughter, Lizzy, a love of the outdoors, teaching her how to bait (下诱饵) a hook and cast a line and brave the waves.
The family spent the day fishing in the vast ocean, and then left the island in the early evening. Upon setting off from the shore, they found thick fog rolling in. Lizzy fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Molly, at a table on the boat’s lower deck (甲板). Their father’s sharp orders woke her up: “Get out of the boat. The boat’s sinking!” Lizzy pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. Both girls wore life jackets. The adults did not. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Bond, who was expecting a baby at that time. Within seconds, the boat was damaged and was left just the tip of its bow in the air.
Looking into the faces of her father, mother, and sister, Lizzy wasn’t frightened. After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. “I’ll be back,” he said before disappearing into the darkness.
“Dad is like the superhero to me. I believe he will get help to rescue us,” Lizzy said to herself. After some time, her mother became quiet and stopped swimming. Lizzy wrapped a rope around her mother’s chest and tied her to the boat so she wouldn’t float away. Then her sister fell quiet too and she stayed beside her.
To keep herself awake, Lizzy daydreamed about what they would do after they were rescued. They would stay in a hotel, order room service, and lie comfortably under the blankets in bed, cozy and warm.

Grady and his family go camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination --- the Great National Forest. With food, necessity and cookers loaded onto the car, the family squeezed into the car. The car door closed, heat was shut outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady's younger brother was playing with a toy dinosaur, making great noise. Grady's mother talked excitedly with his father. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphone and turned on the music. He neither wanted to join his brother nor joined any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the car door.
“This will be a lengthy week,“ he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground. Hundreds of tall and green fir trees, some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet. The sun would be setting soon. Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn't be unbearable. But actually now in the mountain, the hot stickiness of July was closely attached to him.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking over an open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of bug pictures that he had pinned to the walls in his half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp - two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.

Turning around, he saw an angry bear moving swiftly towards him.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Grady got close to the stream, an adorable bear cub caught his eye. Though Grady didn’t like animals, he couldn’t resist such a lovely bear cub measuring no more than two feet tall with a cute face. It was playing pretty joyfully at the edge of the stream. So absorbed was the bear cub in playing that it wasn’t aware that someone was approaching. Driven by curiosity, Grady walked on tiptoe, moving closer to have a look at it. Suddenly he heard a sound behind him.
Turning around, he saw an angry bear moving swiftly towards him. Shocked and dumb, Grady was rooted onto the ground for seconds, and then dashed to their camp desperately, shouting for help in the meantime. Fortunately, Grady’s father heard the shout in time to come to his assistance. To their surprise, realizing the danger was away, the furry giant stopped chasing and returned to the stream, picking up her baby, and holding it in arms tightly. In the distance, attracted by the noise, Jared and his mother were trying to take a photo of the bear cub and its mother.

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling (树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough ”
Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings,” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field.
“You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie (草原).”
“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.
Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.
“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare,” said Rebecca.
“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, and then stopped. “Look! That’s the dugout (防空洞) we had lived in before we moved here last year,” he said, pointing to a hole on the grassy riverbank.
“Come on, let’s go inside.”
“No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard to tell what’s in it.”
“Then you go back,” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca wrapped the seedlings in her long apron (围裙) and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.
A huge rattlesnake (响尾蛇) moved along the riverbank.
It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiling up on the warm sunny bank.
“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh ” William’s face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout.
Rebecca pointed at the rattler. William’s face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, and then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout ”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.
“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”
Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat (衬裙) from beneath her dress, and then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, and then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.
Paragraph 1:
“Get ready to run, William,” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake.

Paragraph 1:
“Get ready to run, William,” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake. Holding her breath, spread the wet petticoat with great caution, which was much heavier soaked with water. Her hands couldn’t help trembling because of great fear and concern for her twin brother as she leaned over the riverbank. “Come on, you can do it! ” she said to herself. Drawing a deep breath, she made a swift movement and cast the heavy petticoat on top of the rattlesnake. “NOW! ” she shouted to William as the snake began to move. Willian jumped over the covered snake and raced as fast as he could before he stopped and turned around. Rebecca was right behind him.
Paragraph 2:
“Are you OK ” he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded. Her heart almost missed a beat. She was so blessed that they managed to escape. Scooping up Rebecca in his arms, “Thanks, sister. I’d have done the same for you back there,” said William. Rebecca said with a grin, “You couldn’t have, for you don’t wear petticoat! ” Laughing, they headed for the woods, carrying the seedlings.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside "the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子)
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇),I took some pictures or the bear.
Eilt and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and. through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
Para 1.
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Roars and screams pierced the silence with needle-like shrillness. The noises turned Elli and I pale with horror. I feared that the giant would destroy our whole fence. He roared repeatedly, shattering what was left of the silence. Elli seized this opportunity to take some pictures of the bear. The animal’s noises echoed all around us. We betrayed our feelings by huddling together, shivering with fear. After thoroughly scrutinizing the area, he trotted forward a few steps.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. My heart leaped with joy as I knew we were likely to be saved. Elli used pepper spray again to buy us enough time. But this time the bear became more alert. He regarded us with the merciless necessity of hunger, so we throw all the food we have. He then turned away and started devouring. As we were climbing the rope ladder, Elli prayed like thousand times to show thankfulness of being safe and sound.

“Are you OK ” he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded.
