(2023·福建漳州·校联考模拟预测)Chinese people are eating too much salt. On general, people in China eat about 10.5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams advised by Chinese Dietary Guidelines (2016). To solve this, China issued(发布) the first salt reduction guide for its food industry on April 18. The government hopes that can help people have salt in a proper way.

A 100-gram bag of Kang Shi Fu instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt. Therefore, it’s necessary for the companies to reduce salt in their products.
A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes(中风), the Xinhua News Agency reported.
Less salt leads to better health. And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, you will get used to the new taste soon.

(2023·福建漳州·校联考模拟预测)Have you ever wondered what animals are talking about With the development of AI, we may be able to understand their languages!
All around the animal kingdom (王国), there are sounds that we can hardly pick up and understand. Elephants for example talk with each other using infrasound (次声波) that can’t be heard by humans. Coral in the ocean also sends sound waves to attract baby coral to safer areas to grow. This is surprising as coral doesn’t have any ears! Scientists have placed listening equipment into these environments to pick up the sounds humans cannot hear.
After the sounds are recorded, AI can study their meaning. For example, Israeli researchers used AI to translate bats’ 15,000 calls. They found that more than 60 percent were arguments about four things: food, sleep positions, invasion (侵犯) of personal space, and unwanted advances (求爱).
This technology can not only understand the animals but communicate back to them. For example, bees use dances to communicate. A research team in Germany, therefore, put the bee language AI system into a robot bee. They asked the robot to create a dance routine (路线) to tell the bees where the nectar (花蜜) was, Vox reported.

(2023·福建漳州·校联考模拟预测)Reading books brings with it many positive effects giving people the opportunity to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It improves our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
Setting aside a day to celebrate books traces its beginnings to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922 he suggested the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes’ birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay respect to authors and books world-wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a logical choice, besides being the date of Cervante’s death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, among other prominent authors. What’s more, several well-known authors were born on 23 April making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. China’s biggest solar-powered drone(太阳能无人机), Qimingxing-50 or Morning Star 50, finished its first test flight in September, 2022. The drone was built by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China(AVIC, 中国航空工业集团有限公司).
Drones have been used for quite a few years now. There are different ways of increasing the flying time. However, all these methods become less useful compared with the unlimited(无限的) power provided by the Sun. That’s why researchers have been working to make solar-powered drones that can not only stay in the air for longer but also perform more tasks while in the sky.
In 2018, China tested the first version(版本) of Morning Star, which was 91 feet wide. Made from a special kind of plastic, the drone was so light, weighing only 41 pared with it, the Morning Star 50 is much larger and has a wingspan(翼展) of 164 feet.
On September 3, Morning Star 50 took off from an airport in Yulin City in the Shaanxi province in northwest China and landed back 26 minutes later after a smooth flight. Staff told some local reporters that all flight systems worked normally. This is a good start for future flights of the solar-powered drone that could last for many days or even months at a time.
In the US, Airbus has been testing the Zephyr solar-powered drones for the past few years. Its latest version, the Zephyr S, came close to breaking the record for the longest flight. (2023·福建厦门·厦门市松柏中学校考模拟预测)Why do designers of fireworks like to put the biggest bang at the end Why does a gymnast often show her best skill at the end of her performance And why does the climax(高潮) of a movie usually come at the end instead of the beginning
To answer these questions, you need to understand a rule in psychology first. It’s called the “peak-end rule”.
Please think about this: How do we usually judge(判定) a past event Do we take an average of our happiness levels across the entire event No. In fact, our memories are affected by the “peak-end rule”. We don’t remember all parts of the event equally. Instead, we only think of how the event was at the end and how it was at its “peak”. That helps us decide whether we would like to experience the event again.
One of the most famous papers on the rule was published in 1993. Scientists asked a group of people to put their hand in freezing water. People had to keep their hand in the water for 60 seconds. Then, the same group of people was asked to do the same thing again. This time, however, they had to leave their hands in the water for 30 seconds longer while the temperature was raised a little bit. They were then asked which of the two experiences they would prefer to repeat.
You might think people would choose the first one. However, most people said they would like to repeat the second experience. They chose more pain over less, but with a happier ending.
So the next time you make a plan, plan for the best things to happen at the end. Don’t worry if things don’t go according to your plans. After all, you may not remember the bad bits!

(2023·福建厦门·福建省同安第一中学校考模拟预测)Chinese buyers used to prize foreign brands, thinking that products made by American or European companies are of higher quality(质量) than Chinese ones. Increasingly, that’s no longer the case.
Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign brands are better than Chinese ones, the billionaire William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV-9. But for those who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.
“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big,” Li said. “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big difference.”
The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China where western companies used to control. A study by Credit Suisse published in March found that young Chinese buyers are increasingly showing a “home brand bias”.
More than 90% of young Chinese buyers would prefer to buy home brands, according to the study. Meanwhile, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products increased their share of the market by 3.3% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.
“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all,” Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.
The Chinese smartphone market is controlled by home companies—Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to be down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.
