Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also be challenging and lead to culture shock and feelings of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany, Italy, right after college, I fell in love with the scenery. Who wouldn’t be The rolling hills, beautiful buildings and delicious food made the long flight worth every minute. I was excited about my new beginning. But then, I started to notice little things.
As an American, we are used to a bit of personal space. Where I’m from, knocking into someone or standing very closely is considered quite impolite. This is different from the truth in Italy.
Because there were no translation apps at that time, not knowing the language was also challenging. Sometimes, I would feel helpless. However, Italians like to speak with their hands—a habit I’ve carried over till this day. Gestures can express general ideas and feelings.
Of course, just because you’ve experienced culture shock in one country doesn’t mean you won’t do so in another.
Years later, when I moved to China, my experience was special. The culture there was something very foreign to me — down to how to buy things. Before moving there, I had never heard of WeChat or Alipay. I wasn’t
prepared at all for how important these things would be.
Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I am travelling around the world and that I should appreciate what I’m taking in.
American-British writer Bill Bryson said that “…the greatest reward of travel is…to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted (被认为是理所当然的).”

A language is a living thing. A language needs to be used; otherwise it gets forgotten. There are about 7,000 languages still in use in the world. But about every fourteen days, one of these languages is no longer spoken and dies. Experts believe that by 2100, more than half of today’s languages will extinct.
There are many reasons why a language starts to disappear. Often it’s because the need for the language disappears. Or because fewer people communicate with it.
In Bolivia, more than 30 languages are spoken today. One is a secret language called Kallawaya. The reason it’s known as a secret language is because it’s only taught by a father to his son or a grandfather to his grandson. Girls almost never learn to speak it. The Kallawaya people use their language for healing and in their family. They don’t really use it anywhere else. These days, there are only about twenty people who can speak Kallawaya. With each new generation, fewer males will speak the language and pass it on to their children. Kallawaya is disappearing because of cultural and social changes in people’s behavior.
The eastern group of the Cherokee Indian tribe (部落) lives in the state of North Carolina, the USA.Today, there are fewer than 200 fluent (流利的) speakers of Cherokee living in North Carolina. Cherokee people in North Carolina are trying to change that. They set up an elementary school to teach the Cherokee language and culture. Now, more children can speak Cherokee. Many people are trying to help their language grow. In fact, you can find smartphone apps and computer software (软件) in Cherokee.

There is great excitement and argument over Artificial Intelligence (AI). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting, but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing for their lessons. Just imagine how happy they will be if they don't have to correct hundreds of papers, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence (情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction, and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But no research shows that robots can imitate this well.
I also believe we need to develop our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also
make the right decision. To achieve this, relying only on AI is impossible.
In short, AI has both its advantages and disadvantages. To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes You can have all the information you want with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

In November 1911, a team led by Robert Falcon Scott began the journey to Antarctica, hoping to be the first to get to the South Pole (南极). However, Scott and his partners all lost their lives on the way back. Several months after their deaths, people found Scott’s diaries that described the whole journey.
Monday January 15th, 1912 It is wonderful to think it is only 27 miles from the Pole. We should waste no time. Tuesday January 16th, 1912 The flag! The Norwegians have beaten us and arrived first at the Pole. It is a terrible disappointment, and I am very sorry for my loyal partners. Tomorrow we must march (行进) on to the Pole, and then go back home with all the speed we can manage. Wednesday January 17th, 1912 We finally arrived at the Pole. Yes, but under very different situations from those expected. We had a bad day with a strong headwind and a temperature of -22°, and my partners worked on with cold feet and hands. This is an awful and terrible place. Now for the journey home, I wonder if we can do it. Sunday January 28th, 1912 We are getting hungrier and pretty thin, but none of us are feeling tired. Though we have to carry heavy rocks, we have gone further than we expected. Friday March 16th, 1912 Titus Oates was in worse condition. He worried he would get us into more trouble and suggested we leave him behind. We wouldn’t accept that offer. Yesterday morning, there was a snowstorm. He said, “I am just going outside and it may take some time.” He went out and we have not seen him since then. We knew that he was walking to his death, and we tried to stop him. But deep down we knew it was the act of a brave man. Thursday March 29th, 1912 It’s the worst snowstorm I’ve ever seen. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it to the end, but we are getting weaker. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more.
Scott’s diaries are kept in the British Museum. The scientific data (资料) his team collected as well as the twenty kilos of rocks they carried all the way proved that at one time in the ancient past, Antarctica was covered by plants.

I wasn’t prepared at all for how important these things would be.

C.How to search for a best place to visit. D.The value of experiencing culture shock.
(C)
9.Why will a language die
A.Because it is difficult to use.
B.Because fewer people use it.
C.Because it is too old to be alive.
D.Because it needs a change.
10.What does the underlined word “extinct” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Benefit. B.Spread. C.Cooperate. D.Disappear.
11.Who traditionally teaches Kallawaya to the younger generation
A.Mothers. B.Adult males. C.Grandmothers. D.School teachers.
12.What are people doing to help the Cherokee language
A.Working hard to improve it.
B.Asking more people to speak it.
C.Setting up a school to teach it.
D.Giving away apps and software.

I also believe we need to develop our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decision. To achieve this, relying only on AI is impossible.
In short, AI has both its advantages and disadvantages. To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes You can have all the information you want with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.
13.The writer starts the passage by ________.
A.telling a story B.comparing different views
C.pointing out his opinion D.giving some suggestions
14.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The successful usage of AI in many fields.
B.Teachers can help kids think more freely and creatively than AI.
C.AI helps teachers to correct hundreds of papers.
D.How helpful AI will be to both students and teachers.
15.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “imitate” in Paragraph 3
A.imagine B.produce C.control D.copy
16.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.What can AI Bring Students in the Classroom
B.Will AI Replace Teachers in the Classroom
C.Is AI a Good Way to Help with Children's Learning
D.How do Teachers Use AI in Their Classroom Teaching
