Before leaving school, the kids in Class 4 were told they were going to have football lessons next week.
“Wow!” shouted Omar. “Real football! I bet I score ten goals!”
Back home he begged his mum to buy him a real football strip(彩条球衣), but was turned down. Their teacher Mr Hart only wanted them to have new shorts. Omar was not happy. That night he lay awake thinking. He was going to make sure his mum bought football shorts. He wanted proper white football shorts. Then he knew he could score lots of goals.
After breakfast the next day they set out to buy the new shorts. On the way they saw Matt and Ben from Class 4, who also lived in Lyon Street. They were kicking a ball about beside the road. When they noticed Omar, they invited him to join in, but Omar refused. He shouted back, “I’m off with my mum to buy new football shorts.” “We’ve got ours already,” Matt shouted back.
The market was very crowded. There were shoes and clothes for sale. One man was selling shorts. He was wearing a huge pair of animal shorts over his trousers. They had big green trees on with monkeys smiling at the top. The man stopped them, trying to persuade him to drop in and try on some shorts. Omar paid no attention to him and continued to search for a pair of real football shorts.
He pulled at his mum’s hand. They struggled through the crowds trying to find real football shorts. They found lots of shorts that were too big and a little white pair that was too small. When they did find a pair in Omar’s size they cost far too much money.
“We’ll just have to get the animal shorts,” said Mum. They went slowly back to the man selling animal shorts. They found the shorts had almost been sold out. Omar’s mum opened her purse and paid for the shorts.
Omar pulled a face. “I wish they were real football shorts,” he murmured.
“What matters in football is how to play, whatever you wear.” Omar’s mum bent down and gave him a hug, gently whispering to him.
That day, desperate Omar, in his animal shorts, was surprised to find most of his classmates wearing the same animal shorts.

【答案】One possible version:
That day, desperate Omar, in his animal shorts, was surprised to find most of his classmates wearing the same animal shorts. What a relief! A smile crept onto his face. Seeing so many kids in the same animal shorts, Mr. Hart asked them to play for the same team and named them the Lyon Street Lions. They beat all the others. Omar scored five goals. His mum was right! What matters in football is how to play, whatever you wear. After school, Omar was the first to meet his mum at the gate. He told her about his five goals and the Lyon Street Lions. “We’d better go home quickly now,” said Omar. “I have to wash my shorts and tomorrow we’ll play again!”

Into the cave
Standing outside the cave entrance, Grandfather admired the green-carpeted hills of Guilin. “Next to heaven,” he said, “Guilin is most beautiful.”
“I would rather be anywhere else in China,” Lin thought.
Lin came here today only because of Grandfather, a stubborn and old-fashioned man, who insisted on using the guano, the waste matter of bats(蝙蝠), to fertilize(施肥) his crops. But he was too weak to do the whole job alone. Grandfather only had the ability to gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the basket, but he wanted to carry it home in the wooden cart, so he needed Lin a lot.
Lin hadn’t been in the cave since the 2-month-ago terrible day of the bats. On that day, as Lin had walked in the cave, a swarm of black bats had appeared out of nowhere, making him extremely terrified.
Grandfather took a shovel(铁铲) and flashlight(手电筒) from the cart. “Come inside with me ” he asked Lin. “Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather said. But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats.
“I dare not go in there now,” he told Grandfather.
“OK” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave with his own shovel and flashlight, he called over his shoulder to Lin, “I’ll be out in no time.”
Lin parked the cart and glanced at his shovel and flashlight inside it. He had used them back in the days when he always helped Grandfather. Now they only reminded him of his fear.
Time flew by very quickly before he came to know it. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “in no time” had turned into a long time. What happened Something had gone wrong Did he slip down and get hurt
Looking into the dark cave, he thought, “I can’t go in there”. Then he imagined Grandfather, hurt and alone.

【答案】One possible version:
Hesitantly, Lin reached for the flashlight and started into the cave. Taking a deep breath, he finally plucked up the courage to go inside. He used the flashlight in search of every corner, and in the meantime, he yelled, “Grandpa! Grandpa!” But there was no response. Looking at the black cave, he became more scared and didn’t dare to move on. The fear of meeting terrible black bats made him tremble.
Recalling Grandfather’s words, “Bats hurt no one.” Lin calmed down. He decided to walk further. He shouted for Grandfather again and again, and looked around carefully. Suddenly he saw a figure on the ground. He lit it by the flashlight and it turned out to be his grandfather. Grandfather fell over a stone by accident and hurt his ankle, so he was unable to walk. Grandfather was so happy to see Lin come to rescue him. Eventually, they carried the cart of guano to go home with Lin supporting Grandfather.

I’m a talker—I have a habit of talking to every person I see—but that afternoon in March 2015, I sat beside
my husband Andy on the 45-minute drive home from the Marcus Autism Center without saying a word. My two-and-a-half-year-old son Wesley had just been diagnosed(诊断) with autism spectrum disorder(自闭症谱系障碍).
I’d been given instructions and suggestions and told to sign up for classes, but I knew we could never afford any. Out of everything the specialists had said, the only word I could remember was socialization-key for Wesley to develop social skills. In the car, I tried hard to come up with ways to make his world more social. Then the strangest idea came to mind, so strange that I blurted(脱口而出) it out. “We need a dog!”
Andy looked at me as if I were crazy. “What are you talking about, Rachel You don’t ever really like dogs.” That was true. I had had bad experiences with dogs growing up. “And how are we going to afford a dog right now ” Yes, another big question. But somehow I couldn’t shake the idea.
A couple of weeks later, I was outside playing with Wesley, when a new neighbor walked over with a black curly-coated dog. When we were chatting, her medium-sized dog ran and jumped playfully between the boys. He was so gentle; he didn’t jump on people the way I’d seen a lot of dogs do. I watched, amazed. It was as if he knew exactly how careful to be with each of them.
“What breed(品种) is he ” I asked. “He’s an Aussiedoodle(贵宾澳牧),” She said proudly. Then she continued, “He was bred(培育) by a woman called Mary, who has three autistic(自闭症的) sons. She found that Aussiedoodles work perfectly as service dogs. I can give you her phone number if you want one.”

“Was this for real We need an Aussiedoodle!” I said. After getting Mary’s number, I flew into the house and caught her. On the phone, Mary shared with us how her dog had helped her kids while Andy and I listened with increasingly excitement and hope. Yet I had to ask Mary to keep one dog for us until we got enough money. To our great surprise, Mary offered to give us one for free, saying she knew exactly what the dog meant to us. Her generosity brought tears to our eyes,
Then Andy and I drove to Mary’s home and picked a dog called Berry. Berry run around Wesley like an energetic black ball. Wesley was obviously amused when Berry licked his hand friendly. And his eyes lit up when Berry didn’t reject his hug. From that day on, nobody could tear them apart. When they were outdoors, people often came to Wesley with questions about his cute companion. Slowly but surely, I witnessed my boy, who used to shut his door to others, becoming more social and more cheerful. Everyone knew it was Berry who helped open the door.

It was a warm spring morning. Five-year-old Mary was riding on a swing(秋千) outside the yard. When
swinging, Mary was angrily thinking about her eleven-year-old brother, David. “How could he be so mean ” she asked herself, remembering how David had made a face and called her a “big baby” at the breakfast table. The swing carried her up so high that she could see for miles.
Mary’s red sweater flashed brightly in the morning sunlight. She then stopped thinking about her brother and started to sing a swinging song.
On a distant hill behind the swing, a huge bull(公牛) with long, sharp horns(角) watched the red sweater swinging back and forth in the sunlight. The bull had broken out of his ranch(牧场). It became angry and ready to attack anything that was moving. It made deep sounds. Then it lowered its big head and began running across the field toward the red sweater.
Meanwhile, David was in the yard, feeding the chickens. He looked out and saw his little sister on the swing. Then suddenly he saw the bull running across the field, heading straight for his sister. Knowing Mary was in danger, David shouted, “Look out behind you, Mary! Get off the swing! Run!” Mary didn’t hear him; she just kept singing and swinging. 【答案】
David ran across the chicken yard, rushing toward his sister. He ran faster than he had ever run before. Catching one of the ropes, David made the swing stop, pulling his sister sideways to the ground only a second before the angry bull attacked the place where Mary had been. Realizing the danger, Mary let out of a terrified yell. The bull stopped, still making deep sounds. Then it faced the siblings and lowered its head to launch another attack.
Seeing this, David immediately pulled Mary’s red sweater off. Then he threw the sweater as far away as he could. The bull followed it, instead of continuing running towards them. Soon, the bull tore the red sweater into pieces. Meanwhile, David half pulled and half carried his frightened sister to safety. After Mary calmed down, she thanked her big brother for rescuing her. From that day on, Mary just laughed every time David called her a “big baby”.

Passage 1
(2023-2024学年安徽芜湖高一下学期期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mr. Ward couldn’t stand students cheating the most. Whenever there was an exam, he watched very closely, making sure no act of cheating was neglected, and any student who cheated would be seriously punished.
I remember many times after tests, Mr. Ward found that the students sitting around me had better scores than the others and the further away a student was from me, the worse his grade. Mr. Ward suspected that some of the juniors “accidentally” got some of my answers. So he and I had a very interesting talk about cheating.
Mr. Ward once told me of some of the ways students tried to cheat. Student A intentionally “dropped” his pencil an unusually far distance from his desk. Then he stood up and walked slowly across the room to take it back. On the way, he glanced at the papers. Student B got a piece of paper and wrote down all the formulas (公式) on a tiny bit of paper taped to the inside of the kid’s palm. These incidents weren’t very rare.
The last day of the entire school year, all I had left was my math exam and there seemed to be some definite tension in the air because this was the biggest test of the year. I saw some kids trying to do some last minute studying, some trying to calm themselves down by breathing slowly and some saying a silent prayer.
Mr. Ward went to the front and started handing out the tests by rows. After explaining the rules of the test, he said very clearly, “If you cheat, I will take your test and tear it up. You will get a 0 for the biggest grade of the year.” Mr. Ward moved very effortlessly and efficiently about the room and during every test he went into a sort of RADAR mode. He sat at the front and watched the room for anything that might look like cheating. During this RADAR mode, if you were cheating, you would be caught. Guaranteed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Our test started and we were sitting there busy working on our papers. Given the importance of the test, all students put in a lot of effort to write down their answers. I was relieved when I finished it easily. With 15 minutes left, I carefully checked my answers. Then I put down my pencil and looked around. At that time, I noticed something peculiar. I was surprised to see a kid stretching his neck to sneak a look at other students’ answers. He was cheating! I was unsure of what to do when I saw Mr. Ward looking at the kid with anger in his eyes.
Then Mr. Ward asked the kid he was watching to go to his office. The kid, feeling embarrassed and scared, slowly moved into the office. In front of the stern Mr. Ward, the kid stood still and silent, his head hanging low and his body shaking uncontrollably. Eventually, he was overwhelmed with guilt, tears of regret streaming down his face. In a tearful voice, he confessed to cheating in the test. Mr. Ward’s expression softened slightly. He gently patted the kid’s head and said seriously, “Honesty is the most important thing!” The kid nodded in understanding. Despite receiving a failing grade, the kid learned a valuable lesson about honesty.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family had only recently moved into a new neighborhood. All of my neighbors have been very friendly and helpful since we moved in.
However, Mrs Davis, an elderly lady living in the last house on the other side of the road, escaped associating with us, or anyone else. When I asked around the neighborhood why, they warned me not to go after her because they thought she was insane(精神失常的) and preferred staying alone after losing her husband and only daughter in an aircraft crash. After that, she stayed isolated(孤立的) from all the neighbors, refusing all the care and help.
I often saw her on the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted to help her, but after hearing what my neighbors had said about her, I wasn’t sure whether I should.
One day, when I was on my way to the supermarket, our paths crossed. I was walking past her and overheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attention because my parents used to sing the same song with me. I began to sing along with her, and she smiled at me for the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went home.
She seemed very different to me that day. I refused to trust my neighbors’ claims that she had cut herself off
from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door. Mrs Davis was home, and instead of letting me in, she just looked at me silently through the window. I noticed her staring at me and was about to walk to the window when she quickly closed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her house. “Hello, I brought you something,” I called out to her. “It’s the record of the music you were singing yesterday.”

【答案】
The door opened and Mrs Davis’ eyes widened in surprise at the sight of me standing there. I held out the record, “I thought you might enjoy this.” Mrs Davis slowly took it from my hands, staring at it. For a moment, she seemed lost in memories. “Thank you,” she whispered. Then I was invited into her house, feeling a sense of connection blossoming between us. “I used to listen to this song with my husband and daughter. It was their favorite,” she shared stories of her love for music, and the pain of her loss. When I left her house, I offered to hug her, and Mrs Davis’ eyes shone with newfound hope.
Several days later in the morning, the doorbell rang at my house. Surprising and delightful, it was Mrs Davis! She stood at our doorstep, holding a tray of freshly baked cookies, her eyes sparkling with warmth, “I wanted to thank you for bringing light to my life.” I replied excitedly, “I’m just more than glad to see you.” Gradually, Mrs Davis no longer cut herself from the world and she became a regular visitor to my house, also finding her way back to the community that cared for her. Sometimes, I realized that all it took was a small act of kindness to break down the barriers of loneliness.

When I was seven years old, I saw my mother sitting at her sewing machine making doll(玩具娃娃) clothes. When I asked her who the doll clothes were for, she told me that they were for the poor people, so I never gave it another thought. On the Christmas morning when I opened my present, there were those beautiful doll clothes. I said to her, “I thought the doll clothes were for the poor people.” My mother just smiled and said, “They are for the poor people. We’re poor.”
When I was nine years old, my greatest desire in life was to own a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷). I had recently learned to walk on a pair of sticks my dad had made for me, and I thought that if I had a pogo stick I surely would be proud of my unbelievable skills.
When Christmas season approached again, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted was a pogo stick. My mother told me they were too expensive and that we simply couldn’t buy one. On a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks before Christmas, my mom and dad told me we needed to go to Sears to pay our credit bill. While my mother and I were at the counter paying the bill, my dad said, “I’ll be right back. I need to see something in the tool department.” Soon my dad came walking out with a long box. I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo stick in that box.
When we arrived back at home, my dad put the box in the barn(谷仓). While my parents were busy with
their things, I walked out to the barn and found the box. I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box my bright shiny pogo stick would appear.
No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom(扫帚). And so Christmas morning was both great and disappointing. I got some nice gifts but I didn’t get the present that I really wanted.

【答案】
On Christmas morning, when I woke up, I found the box on my bed. I clearly knew that was the present that my dad gave me—a broom. I carelessly cleaned all the wrapping paper and then slowly opened the box in tears. Wow, I didn’t believe my eyes, in the box unexpectedly lay a shiny pogo stick, which was waving and smiling to me. I jumped up happily, and at that moment I felt I was the richest and luckiest person in the world.
I couldn’t believe how they were able to get the money for it and how they cheated me with the broom. I was so excited that I couldn’t let the pogo stick out of my sight. When I went to bed that night, I made sure that my pogo stick was on the floor next to me. My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on me, and I wondered if they were secretly watching me from the window as I slid into the barn to steal a glance at my Christmas present.

She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car’s cool air. “The aquarium(水族馆) won’t be crowded, I bet, and people are going to notice me. I hate wearing this prosthesis leg(假肢).” She felt tears coming from behind her eyes. “Not being normal is the worst,” she thought to herself.
Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a corner of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with a a prosthetic tail instead of a real tail ” she asked an aquarium staff member. He nodded and replied, “Yes, that’s Betty. She’s a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her ” “This girl dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail,” Alice caught her breath. “She’s just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail to help her swim like a dolphin’s supposed to swim,” the staff member continued. “Every day, Betty shows us anything is possible if we believe.”
Alice felt her heart was touched. She waved at Betty. Looking at Alice, Betty raised her flippers(鰭), came to her and lifted her head. “She’s swimming right into my arms,” Alice said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Alice: We’re the same.

Recently, I volunteered with Interact, my school's service group at Read 2 Me, an activity that gives volunteers the opportunity to read to little kids and interact with them.
I walked with other volunteers into a large room in which there was a large variety of books. Some were picture books, such as Cifford or The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Others were chapter books with pictures in them, such as the Berenstain Bears and The Wimpy Kid series. For the extremely talented kids who like to be challenged, we provided chapter books that required imagination to understand. Just after I had gathered some books together, someone announced that it was almost time for the activity to start. All at once, a burst of voices was heard. The doors opened, and the children rushed in, beginning to look for a reading buddy(伙伴). They all looked so eager to read, just like mice eager to taste a piece of cheese. I was sitting there waiting and glancing at the books that I had picked out for the lucky kid I would read them to.
Just then, a boy about six years old began to come my way, and I knew that I had found my reading buddy. "Hi, I'm Max. Would you like to be my reading buddy " "Sure," I responded. And then, I let him search for a book of his choice.
"I like this one," shouted Max. I looked at the book that he had chosen. It told an adventure story of a little girl with her dog, and it seemed that it would be a good one to read to him.

【答案】
"Can you tell me why you want this book " I asked. " I like adventure stories and I like dogs," he answered. I was delighted with his answer, and at once, I started to read to him. The story was so attractive to Max. He listened with great interest, totally lost in what was described in the story. He thanked me when I finished reading to him, looking so happy for having got the chance to listen to the story.
Then came the after-reading activities in which we interacted with each other. "I wish I were the dog. Then I could go on an adventure," said Max as we were talking about the story. I laughed and encouraged him to come up with some different endings of the story, which all sounded pretty funny. In the end, we acted out the story together. You can imagine how happy he was. A book opens a door to a whole new world. That day, I helped Max open one, and I'm convinced that he will be able to open many more for himself in the future.

Eric raised his daughter Riley alone. One day, Eric noticed a young teenage boy standing in front of a drugstore. He approached him, and found out that the boy, Jack, wanted to buy medicine for his sick mother, but had no money. Jack cried out, “If I don’t bring home medicine, my mom will die. But I won’t be able to handle it.”
Upon hearing this, Eric didn’t hesitate to pay for the medicine. “I’ll pay for the medicine on his behalf,” he said, handing the pharmacist (药剂师) a couple of bills from his pocket. The boy looked at Eric with grateful eyes, and cried, “Thank you so much. You are heaven-sent.”
“There will always be people willing to help you, son,” Eric told him before handing him two portions of food. “Here, take this to your mom and have a hot meal with her,” he said before letting the boy go.
His daughter Riley saw the whole scene and said, “Dad, we have barely enough money. Why did you pay for the medicine ” Riley, the good you put out into the world will eventually find its way back to you. Just keep doing good,” Eric told his daughter.
When Riley turned thirty, she needed an operation urgently after being told there was something wrong with her heart. With difficulty breathing, Eric rushed Riley to the hospital in an ambulance. “You’ll be alright, Riley.” he cried. “Don’t worry, Daddy is here. We’ll get through this together,” he promised her.
Eric did try his best to find the money for his daughter’s operation. He asked all of his friends, but it was still not enough. Therefore, Eric decided to sell their house. It was enough to pay for her operation, but they would be left with nothing, “It’s okay,” he told himself. I will be able to earn money again, but if I lose my daughter, nothing will ever bring her back.”
By the time Eric made it back to the hospital, Riley was in her hospital room, weak and pale. He sat beside her bed and held her hand. “You’ll be okay, my sweet daughter. We’ll soon have the money for the operation,” he promised her.

He opened it with curiosity and was surprised to find a check inside and a note that read: “You’d saved a boy’s mother years before. Thank you so much for the three packs of medicine, and two portions of food.” Immediately, the memory that he once extended a helping hand to the desperate boy in a long time ago occurred to him. He was touched and hurriedly rushed to the nurse station to confirm his assumption.

The school’s hall got very noisy with excitement as students, teachers, and parents filled the seats, eagerly awaiting the start of the annual school talent show. Backstage, the performers paced nervously, their hearts pounding with anticipation and their minds filled with a mixture of excitement and fear.
Among them was Sarah, a shy but talented singer whose passion for music burned brightly within her. Ever since she was a lonely young girl, Sarah had found comfort in music. With nothing but her voice to accompany her, she would sing for hours on end, pouring her heart and soul into each note, each lyric, each breath.
Sarah’s talent did not go unnoticed. One day, while she was singing softly to herself during a lunch break at school, Mrs Caroline, the choir director, happened to overhear her. Immediately, she saw something special in Sarah—a talent that deserved to rise and shine.
Over the following weeks and months, Mrs Caroline took Sarah under her wing, offering guidance, support, and encouragement every step of the way. She encouraged Sarah to step out of her comfort zone, to embrace her gift, and to share it with the world.
Under Mrs Caroline’s instruction, Sarah began to push herself harder than ever before. She spent hours each day practicing her singing, honing her skills, and perfecting her craft. She sought out opportunities to perform in front of others, gradually building up her confidence and overcoming her fears.
When the moment finally came, with a deep breath, Sarah stepped out onto the stage, the spotlight blazing down upon her like a thousand suns. For a moment, Sarah was frozen in place. But then, with a determined smile, she raised the microphone to her lips and began to sing.

【答案】One possible version:
Then a sudden technical failure caused her background music to cut out. The sudden silence echoed through the hall, and Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she remembered Mrs Caroline’s words: “The true power of your voice lies not in the accompaniment but in the emotions you convey.” Gathering all her courage, Sarah closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and continued singing. Her pure, unwavering voice resonated through the now silent auditorium, capturing everyone’s attention. Enchanted, the crowd began to clap, building into a rapturous applause.
When she stepped off the stage, Sarah recognized a familiar figure among the crowd. It was Mrs Caroline, her eyes glistening with tears of pride and joy. As they embraced, Sarah felt a surge of gratitude for the woman who had believed in her when she didn’t fully believe in herself. “You did it, Sarah,” Mrs Caroline whispered, her voice choked with emotion. Surrounded by her peers, teachers, and parents who were now beaming with admiration, Sarah knew she had discovered a strength within her that could conquer any fear. And as the applause continued, Sarah felt a sense of belonging and accomplishment that she would carry with her for a lifetime.

Amy loved to draw, and her hands, always dirty from the pencil lead, moved on the paper, showing the pictures in her mind. She would sit for hours, lost in art. Trees on her pages seemed to swing in an unseen wind, and the faces she drew wore lifelike expressions. But Amy didn’t look like the art she made. Her clothes were old and had many patches (补丁) that her mother made with care. Amy’s family did not have much money, but they loved each other very much. Her mother worked hard at many jobs to take care of them after Amy’s father got sick and died.
Amy had her good times and hard times in school. She loved different corners of the school which were sources of her inspiration and expected the art lesson. Yet other kids’ laughing at her dress made her sad. She wanted to change the situation, but didn’t know how to go about it. Despite this, she would quietly help someone with a hard math problem or pick up garbage on her way home. She always found comfort in her drawing. In the middle of the term, an art contest on the theme of “My Dream” was to be held, which would select the top three winners, and the head teacher would award them prizes. This news thrilled the children, Amy in particular. They enthusiastically registered for the contest and, after thoughtful consideration, finished their own art pieces. The contest organizers gathered all submissions one week later and set up an exhibit showcasing every participant’s work in the school gym.
The school gym was filled with viewers as the walls displayed the efforts of the young artists. There were paintings of colorful landscapes where the sun burst through thick clouds. Some students had created portraits (肖像) of their heroes. In this sea of creativity, one painting stood out. In the painting, a community garden was drawn, a place where people from all walks of life were planting seeds together. The heartfelt work drew the viewers into a world where every detail had meaning. The exhibition would last a week and all the students and teachers could vote their favorite work.

I’m a talker—I have a habit of talking to every person I see—but that afternoon in March 2015, I sat beside my husband Andy on the 45-minute drive home from the Marcus Autism Center without saying a word.

It was a warm spring morning. Five-year-old Mary was riding on a swing(秋千) outside the yard. When swinging, Mary was angrily thinking about her eleven-year-old brother, David.
Passage 1

Guaranteed.

I refused to trust my neighbors’ claims that she had cut herself off from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door.

While my parents were busy with their things, I walked out to the barn and found the box.

Alice sat in the car while palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Alice began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings.
Back home, all Alice talked about was Betty. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Alice. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Alice suffered the pain in her leg. After a through examination, the doctor explained bad news to them that she would need some surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell (地狱) came back to her.

Sirin frowned(皱眉) and decided to show it to her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice.

The school’s hall got very noisy with excitement as students, teachers, and parents filled the seats, eagerly
awaiting the start of the annual school talent show.

Amy loved to draw, and her hands, always dirty from the pencil lead, moved on the paper, showing the
pictures in her mind.

Mother’s Day was around the corner. Everyone in the class was discussing what gift they should give to their beloved moms. Their teacher, Ms. Jenkins, was instructing them to make pretty postcards with a soulful message.
On Monday morning, Ms. Jenkins entered the classroom. Before she could say something to greet the kids as usual, 8-year-old Simon raised his hand as quickly as possible.
“Yes, Simon ” asked the teacher with a questioning look and the big smile often hanging on her face.
“Excuse me, Ms. Jenkins. What did you get for Mother’s Day ” he inquired.
All his classmates looked at their teacher and Ms. Jenkins smiled again, struggling to hide her sadness, which flashed across her face. “Sadly, nothing. Simon, I don’t have kids.”
Simon felt sorry for his teacher. He could not figure why. It seemed unfair that she didn’t receive anything for Mother’s Day when she was surrounded by kids all the time. She should have received something. Suddenly a good idea hit him.
That afternoon, school over, Simon flew home like a rabbit. After having finished counting the few dollars in his piggy bank, he asked his mother to take him to the flower shop nearby.
When they got in the car, Simon explained to his mother what he would do. Having understood the whole story, his mother looked at him with a loving expression.
The following day, Simon arrived at his classroom with a bunch of flowers and presented it to Ms. Jenkins with a bright smile. “I know you’re not a mother, but you treat us with kindness, affection and patience. You surely deserve a Mother’s Day gift, too,” he said to his teacher, whose jaw dropped in shock. The other kids applauded as Simon hugged Ms. Jenkins.

Passage 11
(2023-2024学年安徽芜湖高一下学期期中)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day a friend invited me to join gymnastics class that she had belonged to for many years. My mom got
the needed information and within a few days I was ready to start!
When I got there, I was extremely nervous. The group wasn’t very welcoming so I was regretting signing up. It seemed they were comfortable with the team they had, and they didn’t want anyone to be added to it. But after working together for a few days, we all soon became friends. A month passed and I learned to do many things. I was excited and ready to learn back handsprings(手翻). Back handsprings are one of the main things you need to know for gymnastics because they are done so often. In my opinion, they are the hardest to do, but I was ready to try.
My friend was the queen of back handsprings, so she helped me understand each and every step. Our coach pulled out a handspring machine to help the kids who were learning how to do them for the first time. This machine is a block that has cushion(垫子) all around it. You basically sit in the mouth of the machine and push off with your feet and go backwards until you land on your hands, then feet.
Even with the handspring machine, I couldn’t get my feet right, so I had to try again and again. Impatient, some of the girls seemed to get angry. I was feeling like the new kid in the group again. The new kid that didn’t know what she was doing but everyone else knew it!

Passage 12

Ethan was a young man living in a small town. He was a bright soul with dreams, but he was also trapped by the chains of fear and doubt.
Ethan worked at a small bookshop, yet deep within, he had a strong desire to become a painter. Every evening, as the setting sun painted the sky in orange and pink, Ethan would sit by his window, a blank canvas(油画布) before him. Yet, no stroke(笔画) graced the canvas. The fear of failure and the whispers of doubt prevented him from painting. “What if I’m not good enough ” he often thought.
One cold autumn evening, an unexpected visitor came knocking at Ethan’s door-Mrs. Wilkins, an elderly well-known woman of wisdom. “Ethan,” she began gently, “I’ve noticed the light in your room night after night,
and yet, I’ve seen no color grace the world from your hands. Why is that ”
Ethan sighed, the weight of his unspoken dreams heavy on his shoulders. He whispered, “I’m afraid that I’ll never be good enough and that my work will never touch the hearts of others.”
Mrs. Wilkins smiled, a kind, understanding smile. “Ethan,” she said, drawing closer, “let me tell you a story of a young bird, much like yourself, afraid to leave its nest. The little bird was always scared at the thought of flight. Day after day, it watched other birds fly into the sky, while it remained where it was, full of fear. The bird feared the unknown, feared failure, and most of all, feared that its wings were not strong enough to carry it. But then, one day, a storm approached, and the little bird had no choice but to jump into the storm. It was not an easy journey; the winds were very strong, and the rain blinded its eyes. Yet, with each flap (拍打) of its wings, the bird realized that it was able to fly.”

Passage 13

When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the representative of our class.
However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was in Grade Three, a student named Amy came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my class and I heard that Amy was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought, I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.
There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson. When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked beautiful or not.
What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my teachers began to criticize (批评) me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Amy in front of me!
I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Amy. I was discouraged and no longer followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final examination result, and I still ranked No.1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.
At the beginning of the second term, our school organized an English Spelling Competition.

Passage 14

Sunlight flooded through the window when Tomas was sitting at the kitchen table, struggling with a literary classic. Not far away, the huge new tower blocks lined the road. The faint sound of cars was dimly heard.
His mother was chopping(切碎) tomatoes for their dinner as usual. Suddenly she said,
“You know, the thing I miss most is cooking a really hot salsa(辣番茄酱) with fresh peppers straight from the garden. That’s what I miss most about Mexico. But now I could only use this instead.” She sighed, waving a packet of chilli spice powder at him. Tomas looked up from his book in surprise. His mother had never talked like this about their old life before. He studied her now. She looked a little sad and swept the pile of chopped tomatoes into the cooking pot.
Watching his mother busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, Tomas thought about the insight his mother had given him into her feelings, and he realized that he felt the same way about leaving Mexico and coming to this new country now.
Tomas missed his old home and his mother missed Mexico, too. She had loved working in her market garden, selling the fresh vegetables that she had grown herself and then coming home to cook up huge, tasty meals for her family. Tomas’s stomach rumbled (饿得咕咕叫) at the memories.
He thought about how different things were for them now, living in this large, gray apartment where there was no garden and no friends visit to share their delicious meals.
He sighed. At least they were still able to speak regularly every night after dinner with his grandmother back in Mexico over the computer—Grandma! Rosa!

Passage 15
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would always end up with the last one among all the athletes. Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered into my first official running race—a 3,000-meter challenge in my city—at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or earn any prize.
I learned about the race from my friend Jim. He told me that the race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave. Since it was a heartwarming program, I showed up, paid the entrance fee and moved over to the starting line. Before long, someone spoke into a microphone. “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale(秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale: A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number and pinned(把……别在) it on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony(仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Then started the race. Not realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds, I gathered all my strength to run in my burning heat. Although other runners gradually passed me along the way, I kept moving forward as fast as I could and struggled to make it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied, for I could try my best to help those in need by running. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.

Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

Passage 16
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tripod’s story started one spring morning as I was finishing a morning surgery at the veterinary clinic(兽医诊所) I owned. I was writing up medical records of the surgery patients when my receptionist(接待员) stuck her head into my office. She told me there was a big cat lying outside with a seriously injured front leg. What’s worse, nobody knew whom it belonged to.
Then I sent two of my pre-vet students to pick up the poor cat while I went back to my record-keeping. But it wasn’t long before I heard the students returning with this newest patient who seemed to be in pretty bad condition.
I carefully checked up the injuries which seemed to be caused by the pressing of a heavy object. With the extremely horrible smell, I knew from years of experience this cat didn’t have an owner. “Well, then,” I sighed, “I’m not sure whether we are able to bring this cat back to life, but let’s give him our best shot anyway. Afterwards, let’s see if we can find a home for him. ”
Just then, when one of the students began touching the cat’s head gently, somewhere deep in the cat’s throat, a weak purr(呼噜声) began. As the student continued to pet the cat, I noticed the cat’s breathing became less laboured(缓慢而困难的).
When I performed the complicated operation, I whispered, “You’re a fighter, aren’t you, boy You deserve a chance to live.” However, after the surgery, he lost one leg, and still struggled with life and death. Over the next few weeks, Tripod, the cat, went through many ups and downs, but I was sure about his resilience (快速恢复的能力). News about Tripod spread. A number of customers stopped by regularly to check on the progress of his recovery, including Mrs Melson, a pet lover.
